Looming Government Shutdown Anarchy?
by James M. SimpsonAs the battle of the budget wages on, the March 4th D-Day moves inexorably closer, and with the Continuing Resolution passed in the House of Representatives early this morning, including two amendments by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to defund Obamacare, the media is increasingly raising the specter of a possible government shutdown. What every Republican, every patriot, every person conceivably affected needs to understand is how this will impact average Americans.
Will airports shut down because air traffic controllers have gone on leave? Will those mean Republicans throw granny out in the street when Social Security stops sending payments? Will everyone who receives checks in the mail see their income dry up because the Post Office shuts down?
The Democrats will tell you that and more. A Google search of “government shutdown” brings up pages describing dire consequences. But if you follow the links you will see that this is more a reflection of leftist web domination than anything else.
The greatest consequence of a government shutdown will be the Democrat-generated media hysteria we will have to put up with unless/until they get their way. They will demagogue at every opportunity, describing fantastic scenes of nationwide anarchy. They will do what they always do, about the only thing they do well, and in fact have already begun doing:
They will lie.
President Obama almost immediately threatened that Social Security checks would stop coming.
He lied.
Think Progress, the archetypical radical left propaganda rag, interviewed freshman Republican Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), who pooh poohed worries about a government shutdown. They didn’t ask him to qualify, but later attempted to discredit his message:
Kelly’s assertions are simply not true. One need look no further than the federal government shutdown of 1995 for proof. During the nearly four-week shutdown, Social Security checks were not mailed and Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements were disrupted.
They lie.
The whole article is a carefully constructed deception—an echo chamber for Democrat demagoguery. Follow the links. They’re hoping you won’t.
The first link goes to a Wikipedia entry that describes the 1995 shutdown. No mention of social security checks. The second goes to an article at Talking Points Memo, the hard left smear site. It simply quotes more Democrats, like Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Reich and Donna Shalala, then HHS Secretary. She said, “It was a mess, frankly, and devastating to the civil service… It seems to me it’s un-American…”
Devastating to the civil service…
I find that telling. Her biggest concern is the impact on… government. And what a joke. We are talking about two shutdowns here, one of five days and another of three weeks—merely a long vacation for most government bureaucrats.
Un-American? Well, she should know.
According to TPM, Shalala provided a list of payments that would stop: “Social Security checks, Medicare reimbursements…welfare checks to the state, Medicaid checks to the state.”
She lied.
Think Progress even absurdly cites a report by the Center for American Progress. The Center is run by far, far left, former Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta, and described by former Weather Underground Obama supporter Mark Rudd as “Obama’s government in waiting.” Yet another echo chamber.
The Think Progress article then cites some statistics from a 2004 Congressional Research Service report on government shutdowns, implying that the CRS concurred regarding all these ill effects of the shutdown.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The Congressional Research Service is one of the few remaining organizations within the U.S. government that produces serious, unbiased analysis. Part of the Library of Congress, it is the go to organization when members of Congress want the unvarnished truth. By citing CRS, Think Progress attempts to impute integrity to their fraudulent propaganda. Once again, they are hoping you don’t look up the actual report, which they did not link to.
Think Progress lied.
The CRS report is explicit regarding those government services that will not be disrupted. Cut and pasted directly from the report:
Essential Services and Personnel
A 1980 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memorandum defines “essential” government services and “essential” employees as those:
- providing for the national security, including the conduct of foreign relations essential to the national security or the safety of life and property;
- providing for benefit payments and the performance of contract obligations under no-year or multi-year or other funds remaining available for those purposes;
- conducting essential activities to the extent that they protect life and property, including:
- medical care of inpatients and emergency outpatient care;
- activities essential to ensure continued public health and safety, including safe use of food, drugs, and hazardous materials;
- continuance of air traffic control and other transportation safety functions and the protection of transport property;
- border and coastal protection and surveillance;
- protection of federal lands, buildings, waterways, equipment and other property owned by the United States;
- care of prisoners and other persons in the custody of the United States;
- law enforcement and criminal investigations;
- emergency and disaster assistance;
- activities that ensure production of power and maintenance of the power distribution system;
- activities essential to the preservation of the essential elements of the money and banking system of the United States, including borrowing and tax collection activities of the Treasury; and
- activities necessary to maintain protection of research property.
Let me be absolutely clear here. There will be no disruption in Social Security, welfare, civil service retirement, or any other kind of open-ended mandatory program payments. The mail will not stop because the Post Office is largely self-funding (with you know, those stamps you buy to mail things with). Air traffic controllers will not go on furlough, jets will keep flying, the Border Patrol will keep on attempting to secure the border that Janet Napolitano wants unsecured, and our military will stay in the fight, however poorly and treasonously led by the current Commander-in-Chief.
Will there be adverse effects? Absolutely. We are talking about a government shutdown. But they are not the dire consequences Democrats are hyping. The only people who will really notice the government shutdown are government workers themselves, and most importantly, Congressional Democrats.
Notice that the CRS Report link is directly from the Democrats’ House Rules Committee website. So the Democrats know all this, but they blatantly lie about it. They have an advantage in doing this because the media relentlessly echoes their message.
The Republicans’ job from here on in is to point out the facts. Every Republican in Congress should be pounding out this message. In 1995, they utterly failed at this, when Newt Gingrich reportedly made it all about him, suggesting he threatened a shutdown because Bill Clinton dissed him on Air Force One. Forget Newt for President.
Republicans also must pound the airwaves with reminders that a government shutdown would be due entirely to Democrat intransigence. Republicans are merely trying to keep their pledge to the American people, who in November of 2010 sent an unmistakable message to the Democrats: knock it off!
One possibility remains. Given his penchant for defying law and the Constitution through regulatory subterfuge, President Obama could possibly change the ground rules and crank up the pressure by actually ordering the Social Security Administration to stop sending checks. Once again, it will be incumbent on Republicans to explain that Democrats are choosing to do this.
This is a critical juncture in our Nation’s history. Republicans must demonstrate some intestinal fortitude for a change. A few days ago, I posted an article demanding that Speaker Boehner put up or shut up by allowing amendments to the Continuing Resolution that would defund Obamacare. Given that the bill passed the House with such provisions, it appears he decided to put up.
Speaker Boehner and House Republicans, you have the voters on your side, you have the facts on your side, and never in our history has it been more important for you to take a principled stand. Do not back down in the face of the Democrats’ government shutdown threats. We don’t want that, but if Democrats insist on continuing to trash our country, I say, “bring it on!”

Bring it on. There is nothing I'd like better than to see this irresponsible administration shut down.
NoBama and the Damnocrats lied?
How is that so? I thought they were for open and honest government./sarc
More than likely we'll prosper. Now if they could shut down AND stop spending money we'd be set.
Its like the fallacy of Lord of the Flies. If you leave people alone they don't kill each other, they merely go about their business. It would be Lord of the Prosperity. Like having a ball and chain taken off your ankle.
I wonder if Reid and/or Obummer will shut down the gov?
Well I did finally find one site that gave me some statistics: http://usgovinfo.about.com/library/weekly/aa10249...
"$700 – $800 million including $400 million to furloughed federal employees who were paid, but did not report to work. The Treasury Department reported another $400 million in lost revenue over the four days that the IRS enforcement divisions were closed."
Aren't we losing enough money?
And about SS:
"Social Security – claims from 112,000 applicants were not processed. 212,000 new or replacement Social Security cards were not issued. 360,000 office visits were denied. 800,000 toll-free calls for information were not answered."
I love how progressives will use the contract with society argument when they want us to obey THEIR elected officials without question yet toss contract with society in the garbage when some other team played by exactly the same rules.
Hey progressives? What about that contract with society argument you always hide behind? The people voted for the republicans… they are YOUR representatives… aren't you going to obey contract with society like you expect all of us to do?
Or are the rules going to magically change once more.
By all means post a strawman comment about something that has nothing to do with the conversation. That's all you seem to know what to do.
It,s all about money and power for the union. Something happens to the money they loose power. With out power the union will disperse like a fart in the wind.
If the governemnt DOES shut down, doesn't it stand to reason that it will be the teat suckers, leaches and parasites that will be the most effected? If so, BRING IT ON!!!!!
If the government elite class wants to strike and riot over necessary cuts that will require them to live in the new reality that they ARE NO LONGER going to have platinum salaries and benefits the people who are paying them can't have, let them.
We really don't need 90% of the government anyway to survive. If they were shut down it would affect productive people about as much as a worldwide Mime strike would.
To those fearing a government shutdown worried you won't have a place to live or food? Maybe you should take that as a HINT that you need to BECOME A PRODUCER because the parasite's life is about to become a LOT harder.
Think about this folks. Clinton ran the whole country on 2.3 tril with only 10% less population, half the size of gov and half the rules and regulations. Also half the size of medicaid and medicare. Simply put the entire gov could shut down and we would be far better off.
And in Wisconsin, your kids NOT going to school is probably better for them than going given the horrible results we're getting.
The new reality: The socialist welfare state IS coming to an end. The money to continue it doesn't exist. The parasites have already spent not only their money but the money of the next 2-3 generations.
The only way it continues is if there is an authoritarian coup and a Hugo Chavez like confiscation of wealth and property. But even that won't fuel it for long, the producers will rebel and cease producing, and the end result will be what always comes of such regimes: Zimbabwe.
Liberals had banked on the 2nd Amendment being repealed way before this point in time.
Now Liberals are screwed.
Liberals cannot move forward the way they wanted to because of the 2nd Amendment, and there is no going back to the way things were under the Liberals because the United States of America is broke.
Ahh, but the difference between Zimbabwe/Venezuela and US, is we have an active military that is loyal to our Constitution, and an armed citizenry.
No "coup" will be permitted.
If the federal government is shut down, the American people will flood into the streets egyptian style to celebrate.
If the Republicans stick to their guns (yes I said guns), and DO NOT BUCKLE, it will mean the end of obama, and the end of democrat party relevance for the next generation.
Hence why Barry Soetoro (aka Barak Hussein Obama jr) wanted to create a civilian defense "corpse" that is "as well funded" as the military.
Yes, I believe our military will side with the Constitution and thus, the People should the Regime choose to go the Chavez route, but Obama will be able to cobble together a respectable army of thugs made up of union operatives, especially SEIU union police officers. Not enough to defeat a properly disciplined and trained military, but plenty enough to terrorize and bully civilians.
If shutting down government were really that horrific, the Democrats in WI wouldn't be very publically doing just that.
This is all part of the Progressives plan to create enough chaos and make it last long enough to give the Criminal O time to setup the mechanisms to steal the 2012 elections. Mark my words! Chairman O means to steal the 2012 elections by any means possible. And, if Civil War starts all the better for him.
The National Socialist Democrat Party does nothing but lie. They have to because they can't be honest about what they desire to do, they'd never get more than 20% of the vote. And they generally get away with it because:
1. 99% of the increasingly inaccurately called "mainstream" media will WILLINGLY propagandize for them.
2. Most of their own constituency is made up of ill educated (or over educated) useful idiots.
However, the spending/deficit/entitlement crisis is one they CANNOT spin and hide, no more than they could hide the Sun going Supernova if it were to do so. During the Obama Regime our country has struck an iceberg due to the over spending and continued bad economy that is the result of over regulation. We're taking on water and doomed to sink if we keep doing what we are doing.
Bush and the Republicans had us headed toward that iceberg. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi cranked the engines up to flank speed .
And, more importantly……Liberals do NOT have the support of military leaders…or the military.
Funny, their decades long hostility towards servicemen and the military in general could well be the thing that ultimately prevents Obama's takeover of America.
I don't care if the government loses money. None of it is theirs anyway. It belongs to the people who PRODUCED IT, not Washington.
We have seen 2 years of anarchy from NoBama and his band of Socialist misfits.
Things will not change until we rid ourselves from these goons, hopefully they will be eliminated forever.
If BO shuts down any of the "essential" services, it will be his and the dims death knell in 2012. Go ahead and let the brat, his czars, and the regime do it. Repubs start telling the people the truth and spell it out that if there is a "shutdown" it's the fault of the current executive branch of the government. For once, show some backbone and big, brass ones. We, the voter, will support you in this endeavor.
King O won't have an election he'll just suspend the constitution and try to remain king for life.
Just imagine the anger of the lobbyists. Their rice bowls would be broken for several days or weeks. Also, if I read it correctly, monies to the useless nations and foreign aid would cease – another bonus. It just keeps getting better. Fondest wish is that all subsidies would also cease. Now that would be like a great glob of fresh whipped cream on top of a great slice of pumpkin pie. I do so like pumpkin pie.
"We don’t want that, but …"
Speak for yourself.
The last time government shutdown most in the country still got their news from the MSM and believed what they were hearing – not any more! If the progressives think a government shutdown will help them, they really don't have a clue as to what is going on!
Reid will, he needs to protect Obama for 2012.
I lived through the "horrors" of the government shutdowns in '95. Didn't notice any difference.
These government agencies are not know for being very fast in there processing anyway.
Same here. Didn't even seem to slow down the private sector.
I wish. When the government shut down in 1995, I didn't notice anything different. There was hysteria in the media, but nothing new about that.
Top Down, Bottom UP, Inside Out – The Top and the Bottom come together to SMASH the Middle Class. Their goal is to eliminate the Middle Class.

"The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves."
George Washington
"$400 million to furloughed federal employees who were paid, but did not report to work."
"Social Security – claims from 112,000 applicants were not processed."
"212,000 new or replacement Social Security cards were not issued."
"360,000 office visits were denied."
"800,000 toll-free calls for information were not answered."
Huh. So it really didn't make that much difference.
It was probably a big relief for the private sector.
I dare them to find me ONE person who would cry if the government DID shut down and that included Social Security. WHo wouldn't breathe a massive sigh of relief?
I can't remember the last time the SS office actually answered my call at all. And all of those numbers would be true on a normal week, just by the slow bureaucracy and people having to come back the next day.
It's always like that. They scream :"Democracy!" until it happens and they don't like it (ie Wisconson), and then it's perfectly fine to fight against democracy and the majority and fight until you get your way.
If they close the government down, will we finally see promised transparency in the government?
Just curious, how is the second amendment holding them back?
Oh, there are a few Generals and Admirals who support them. Wesley Clark comes to mind. There's several others in the Puzzle Palace.
You might recall that Eisenhower was the commanding officer in the Bonus Army massacre. Word the orders properly and the military will comply. At first. Once they are engaged, they will continue to fight due to the citizens' resistance and self defence activities.
I've been wondering why the Republicans are blamed for shutting down the government. After all, the Democrats were the majority in Congress when Congress failed to pass a Budget. Now it seems the Dems are refusing to work with the Republicans who are the majority in the House. Yeah, yeah, i realize it's the "liberal spin," the media talking points, but I'd wish more GOP folks would start turning around the blame. After all, they're representing the majority of "the people (yep, "we the people") who do want the major cuts, and do want much smaller government, and certain do want to defund…well, everything we can that extends the power of the Federal government into our lives!
SEIU and the unionized police will be the first to be taken out by the patriots if it comes to that. Be ever vigilant. obumba will try to cobble a army but it won't be respectable it will be dead in its tracks. Time for patriots to be prepared 24/7.
Bring it on. I think, with Dick Morris, that a government shutdown will hurt Obama and the Democrats more than the Republicans. After all, the great majority of folks want spending and deficit reductions.
In 1995 the National Parks did shut down (We were asked to leave Yosemite, as a result.), but that is certainly not a national emergency.
Let's hope the Republicans can grow and keep some Juevos on this.
Liberals fear an Armed American.
I don't think the majority of police, even unionized ones, would betray the people. However, many more of them will than would the military. Our military is programmed AGAINST firing on US civilians. Police do it all the time.
When I'm talking of traitor SEIU police, I'm talking about the ones such as in DC who escorted a SEUI bully gang to terrorize the family of a bank executive, etc. THOSE will be the types who will attack civilians on behalf of their union and the Regime.
MacArthur was ordered to cut the Bonus Marchers from World War I down, not Eisenhower.
Nothing wrong with General Clark, as a matter of fact if not for the Flamingly Liberal British Military General Clark would have taken out Russia back in the early days of Kosovo.
Admiral Mullen is a flaming liberal, but, the Navy would not do much on the ground here in the States.
Excellent and important post. Thank you. Hey they can stay out longer for all we care—the less harm they can do.
BUT you are right getting this message out is CRUCIAL!!!
The only weapon the socialists and communists have ever had is THE LIE! Oh, yes sometimes they use other weapons as during all out revolutions–but it is the lie that gets people to believe. It is the lie right now in Wisconsin that we are taking away their rights when in fact they are taking away the taxpayers' rights and the children's right to an education!!!
Read WITNESS by Chambers
Read Techniques of Communism by Budenz
Read all the media hype as you have here—–and it will lead to the same place—A LIE!!!!!
That would be an interesting story Obama and the lie.
Stimulus funds–unemployment
Obamacare–you like your medical coverage you can keep your medical coverage
etc etc etc
someone could get a Ph.D. researching this
Shut it down. Conservatives have been preparing for this scenario for quite some time.
If the Feds shut down there better not be one paycheck printed to the great Half-Black Hope
I agree completely. I'm just not sure the Republicans in Congress have the balls for this fight. One thing (two things?) our GOP reps on Congress have historically been deficient in in balls. Plus, they might get the Democrats mad at them and not get invited to all the cool parties.
Navy? No…..I said 'military'.
Shut it down! Who cares, and like any wildcat strike use the opportunity to thin the herd, 20-30%. Shut it down!
The Dems would be crazy to "call" the repubs bluff.
Americans will realize how little most of government is really needed.
Maybe I have a recollection problem, but the article mentions the government being shut down for four weeks. I was working as a contractor employee at a federal office when the shutdown came. I don't remember the civil service folks being gone for more than a week. We, on the other hand, being contractors, had to stay on duty (we were IT support).
Whatever.
Check.
Anarchy? We can only hope.
Obama and the DNC have declared war on America…so;
If shutting down government will bring back fiscal sanity, then so be it.
Umm, the govt shut down for snow days. Did we miss them?
During the Gubment shutdown in the Clintstone era , Slick himself said he would furlough two million non-essential gubment workers. He said it. Most of the gubment is there for the sake of growing government, nothing more. How many more non-essential gubment workers are there now ?
Anarchy is you and your girlfriend walking down the street . As I approach you , I pull a gun and shoot you in the head , killing you. Then I rape and murder your girlfriend and then steal all your valuables from your dead bodies. Then I casually walk off scot free. Do you really want anarchy ?
Actually anarchy is the concept that no person can exert their will over another person. Its usually associated with violence but its meaning is no man can rule another man.
BRING IT…………
I'M TIRED OF ALWAYS GIVING IN TO THE CRYING BABIES ON THE LEFT.
if obama wins in 2012 i am going to washington to protest egyptian style. who's in?
There is not a man among men in the rebuplican party who can deliver this message other than Christy. Mrs. Palin we need you NOW. 1st move should be for Sarah to have a copy of your points from the demoncrats own website…and then she should use obama words social security statement "as a threat message"
Message should be…1st he gives his union friends car companies on the taxpayers bill …then he shuts off domestic oil so you have to pay $3.25 per gallon at the pump and hands the taxpayers the bill…he goes after states trying to protect their taxpayers like AZ and WI and makes you pay to sue yourself…now he threatens to cut off your social security checks in retribution because the adults had to take his credit card away because he won't be responsable…Obama grow up…the public allowed you the opportunity to lead this great nation for all the American people…not just your friends and play pals. MAN UP BARACK!
The stock in trade of the left is deceit.
I lived in Mad-Town for five years. My tow girls started school there and the teaching was so bad, i.e. toughy-feely social engineering and fuzzy math, that I had to put them in our church's school. Even back then in the early 90s the teachers were whining about low pay. An expose was done on a teacher couple who were writing woe-is-me letters to the editor. Their combined income from teaching 9 months of the years was around 150,000. Nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you CRY.
It's time to put up or shut up! Shut it down and let Obama show us what a "leader" he is! You'll see him out there marching with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Little Dicky Trumpka, the Teamsters, SEIU and AFSCME and various other union scumbags because that's what a marxist "community organizer" does when the going gets tough. It's time for We the People to, once again, raise our voices as we have done in the past and bring these criminals to justice, once and for all. Peacefully but forcefully, we must take back OUR republic.
now let me axe you a kwestion…
if the gubmint shuts down how much of your dough will that save???? hands??? com'on show of hands!!!
here's the answer…
GA-FUGGIN'-ZILLIONS…that's bigger than buzillions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
heeeeeeeey wait a minute!!!!!!..
.they can't stop my socsec check it's in a locked box safe from scumsuckin' politicians…
WHAAAAAAT???? it ain't???? holy smokin'flat fish!!!!! WE'S SKREWED!!!!! they're tryin' to kill me!!!
Who is John Galt?
Our military is programmed AGAINST firing on US civilians.
I wouldn't be so sure. I'm sure you've heard of the "all enemies, foreign and domestic" part of their oath. Suppose they were convinced that we were the "domestic enemy".
This won't be too popular here and will probably get me a few thumbs down, but I do not trust any aspect of our government, even the military, to be on our side.
True, but Eisenhower was the man on site.
"Aren't we losing enough money? "
Yep. That's why I asked if anyone thought Reid or Obie would shut down the gov.
During the furloughs in 1995 congress decided to pay everybody even though they weren't obligated to. Remember those furloughs weren't done to save money, they were a side-effect of the fight between Clinton and Gingrich.
There is no indication that they would pay anybody this time except for "essential" personnel although, again, this shutdown would happen because yet again the Congress and the White House couldn't get their act together.
There were two shutdowns in 95 -95 – one for a few days and the second for a few weeks. It is possible that some agencies had budgets passed between the first and second furlough, but mine didn't. I had to come in for a few hours twice a week to keep a couple of instruments alive. so I remember it pretty well.
"Essential" personnel are people that have to be there to maintain safety, security or perform some core functions that have to happen (like nurses in VA hospitals or the people that are responsible for getting out Social Security checks). The so called "nonessential" personnel are the ones that do almost all of an agency's mission.
Wait till all those Old WHITE Senior Citizens that vote almost exclusively GOP do not get their Social Security Checks and cannot go see the Doctor because of the GOP shutdown.
Boehner’s district in Ohio is basically one big giant Old Folks Home. Boehner better get real hot on getting a budget passed through the Senate and White House are Republicans are going to have to answer to their very own voting base.
Boehner might want to ask Newt how well this stunt worked out for him.
FBI and CIA Shutdown and we get attacked, Boehner and the rest of the GOP should all be tried for treason.
Is Boehner and the GOP ready to defund Our Troops on the battle field?
Will the highways that are covered with snow not get plowed? If any one dies on those highways will Boehner and the GOP be tried for murder?
By the looks of this article, there are way too many "essential services" that will continue to run. Make sure people get their checks and we keep an eye on the prisoners under our care. Pay the military. Most of the rest can shut down for the good of all of us.
Here here. The sooner we face it, the better. Make it just long enough so they perhaps gain some appreciation for the people who work to feed their worthless carcasses
AND the fact that when the feces hits the fan most of them are not prepared at all to defend themselves. Their revolution is never going to succeed if the best they can come up with is a drum circle and a chorus of We Shall Overcome. Imagine the fun when they start making demands backed with threats of……nothing.
Because they are the ones who are mostly unarmed, by their own choice.
Never happen, he does not have the balls to cut off the welfare checks to his base. They will turn on him the day after the checks don't show up.
I would love to see a shut down. All of the leeches screaming "Where's my Obama money?!?!?!" Gonna hurt him more than anyone else.
Off Topic: The latest CPI number released this week shows that inflation is beginning to rear its ugly head.
Europe and China, as well as many emerging markets, are witnessing inflation now. And, if you have noticed, gas, food, and other commodity prices here in the United States have skyrocketed. Gee, thanks Uncle Ben of the Fed: All of that money printing is starting to pay off.
"The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves."
George Washington
Gotta wonder how much will be saved each day by freeloaders not getting their handouts. Most of us will get by just fine.
