Obama to California ‘Water, Its Not a Right its a Privilege’
by John LoudonOn the list of insane public policy moves we have come to expect from the current administration, Cap and Tax, Obamacare and Union Card Check, a fourth has garnered relatively little attention, although the implications for all Americans may be among the most far-reaching. The recurring theme is centralized control.
On Monday, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will host a rare Congressional “Field Hearing“. A Congressional delegation will venture out of the beltway and actually devote time to a problem in our country. Better yet, they will be listening to real citizens. Sort of.
At issue is what residents are calling a government-made drought in the Central and San Joaquin Valleys of California. Legal and environmental regulations in the Endangered Species Act has resulted in the diversion of 200 billion gallons of water from the agricultural heartland of California into the Ocean. According to California farmer Rose Corona,
“Potentially over $20 billion of California’s $43 billion of agricultural revenue could be decimated in America’s greatest breadbasket as farmers lose their farms and residents are forced to import food from China. While the solutions are not simple, local government officials are not even able to attempt them.”
Two thirds of California’s water is in Northern California, but two thirds of the people live in Southern California. Over the last generation, a series of aquaducts and canals was built to divert some of the plentiful water in the North so that instead of raising the sea level (as Al Gore warns us is imminent) the fresh water will irrigate incredibly productive land. The five counties effected provide tens of thousands of jobs and a stunning $20 billion of food output.
So why would politicians in California, a state that is already bankrupt, do anything other that mount a united battle to find a solution? That is hard to say. Instead there are deep and often ugly divisions and battle lines such as radical environmentalist on one side and farmers and migrant workers on the other.
Officials are perplexed to find an explanation for the declining population of the delta smelt, a small bait fish. It is also true that the salmon industry is concerned. So it is understandable that regulators would force action. What is not understandable is why the game of man vs beast is tilted at every turn toward the beast.
Consider that the judicial solution holds that if the fish population is declining, we will leave more water in the river and see if that works. No one knows if it will. Maybe there is a chemical or biological explanation, but we will take a chance because the lives of fish are at stake.
So when a compromise solution is proposed, called the “Two Gates” project, that would restore water and possibly protect fish, the Obama administration’s Interior Secretary, Ken Salzar put the brakes on it. So we will experiment to put fish over people, but we will not experiment to put people over fish. How is that Hope and Change working for you?
As for the rest of us, the implications are huge, not just for our food bills, but for establishing the precedent of allowing the Federal government this level of control over water. When government takes your water, they take the value of your land nay, they steal the value of your land.
Missouri lost this battle over the last several years and unlike California, we have to drive hundreds of miles to find anything that looks like a desert. Nevertheless, the Government used the same Act to withhold water from the State after which the river is named, favoring the pallid sturgeon over farmers. Get the pattern?
Now consider for a moment that we are not just talking about California farmers, nor just our food supply, we are talking about who controls the food supply.
This area of California is some of the most productive in the Country producing nearly half of America’s produce including 55% or our asparagus, 90% of our strawberries and 100% of our olives. When the 35,000 unemployed residents of the region look for help at the food pantries they drive past idle asparagus fields to get their canned asparagus from China. So we depend on Islamists for oil and now China not just for cash but for food!
So residents of California, and really the rest of us, have no other hope than Congressional action. They need Congress to immediately pass Congressman Devin Nunes‘ Bill, the aptly named “Turn the Pumps on Act“. Amazingly, the legislation to help California out of this crisis is bottled up in Committee by a Californian–Nancy Pelosi. Nunes is asking his colleagues to sign the discharge petition. Is your Congressman on the list?
Although Rose Corona and others are pleased with the leadership of Congressmen Nunes and McClintock who have pursued the “Field Hearing” that will take place Monday, they remain angry about several points including:
- Why the hearing is located in Los Angeles, over 200 miles from the effected area?
- Why Democrats get five witnesses and Republicans only one?
- Why was the “Two Gates” solution postponed indefinitely under the radar last week by the Obama administration?
- Whether California’s Congressional Democrats are willing to move the majority Party in Congress to act?
Because the travel distance is such a strain on both the farmers and the concerned citizens in that area, Corona and other Pro-water coalition groups are calling on all Patriots and Tea Party Activists to come and show their support for a solution in two locations. A Town Hall meeting with Representatives Nunes, McClintock, McCarthy and Bishop (R-Utah) will be held on Monday:

If you will be anywhere in Southern California on Monday, please make one of the meetings. If you cannot, please be sure your Congressman is on the discharge petition. The administration that wants to control your health care, your energy and your bank, now wants to control your water.

Hang on America. This is what this tyrannical government is going to do to every industry throughout this great nation. They are not getting it done in congress so they are going to use EPA, OSHA, DEP etc. We need to get everyone to stand together and stop this! We are the majority!
I have thought about this issue lately, especially after the Supreme Court's recent decision. Would it be possible for California farmers to create a web site to receive donations in order to send this message state-wide so that all American's can be made aware of this travesty? There is a world wide food shortage, and this water policy is just another way for government to control and perhaps destroy the lives of its citizens. Perhaps information that is made public would create support for a reversal of this dangerous policy.
Countless human lives affected by the protection of a "bait fish". This is typical LIBERAL thinking and policy at it's finest. Let's just put thousands of good hardworking Americans out of work and make them lose their homes over the protection of a fish we don't even use as a food source. This has been going on for a year now, I guess the restrictive California gun laws are working because if this was Georgia we would have already had a violent uprising to settle this B.S.
I despise the Delta Smelt and any person that wants to protect it.
How many possible ways can this administration lay blame to the human race, as the sole cause, for every single plight on the face of the Earth?

"They" want this land for the huge solar and wind power project. What better way is there to get the land cheaply than to "water starve" the farmers out of existence? What is shocking: The hearings are being held in Los Angeles. 200 miles away from the _people_ that will be effected by this. The fish do not pay taxes, and they do not vote. I don't advocate running roughshod over the environment, it is responsible to take care of the world in which we live. However, if we make it hard for humans to live in the name of protecting the world, we've kinda lost the plot. You cannot create jobs by ruining yet another industry.
Also noteworthy: 5 democrat witnesses, 1 republican. Seems like a less-than-symmetrical representation of ideologies.
I think this hearing is a sham. They're holding it 200 miles away from the folks who will be impacted by its outcome, and they've stacked the witnesses. They already know what decision they're going to make, this hearing is just a formality.
If Congressional action in favor of food producers does not occur, this would be further overreaching/arrogance by these feckless fanatical lunatics. Smelt v. hunger??!! This one could be real fodder for the anti-Dem video machines if the Dems hold true to their smelt-worshipping ways. Compassion for the farmers, the hungry, and the U.S. grocery shopper. Consideration of the national security implications of allowing some of the most productive agricultural land in the nation to be left a desert…by a SMELT??!! I so totally agree. Hunger and unemployment may focus them on something other than just the image and celebrity of their candidates. Substance matters…even in California. They are now just beginning to pay the piper for their celebrity-worship.

Ken Salazar is from Colorado—-my state—he is a statist in every sense of the word. This is a great opening. Their position is indefensible. I believe the Left's actions (inaction) in CA will lead to a great example with which to educate the NATION regarding the nature of the party governing them. I see video spots with starving children and pictures of bait fish; with dry, useless CA farmland vs. productive Chinese farms; with deserted roads in these water-starved counties vs. shots of the containers of imported food coming in off the docks needed to offset the lack of food production. The list is endless. The Dems can't help themselves. This is who they are. Your interesting suggestion could fund the effort nicely.

This kind of stuff has always bothered me, such as how some cities and municipalities actually ban people from collecting rain water that comes off of their roof. It seems like a slap in the face to the principals that this country was founded on.

Why not breed the delta smelt in captivity, restock the river and experiment with some of the captive fish to determine what can be done? Meanwhile, go with a solution that provides people with water. I know that the pallid sturgeon and paddlefish are being raised in a hatchery up at Gavin's Point Dam up in South Dakota. (Don't know about water use rules though.)

The problem isn't in the farm districts. Look at a county by county red/blue map and virtually all of the state is red. The blue areas of the SF bay area and the LA basin control the politics because they have the most voters. If legislative districts were issued on the basis of area the farming / rural areas would win.
I left California a few years ago for Texas. Traded one set of problems for another. Fortunately, Texas problems are smaller, for now…..

What I think should happen is that the local farmers and citizens just go down and turn on the water to the fields. Will the government use armed force to stop them? Surely Obama would but would love to see this on Fox News, as the MSM wouldn't report it.

If it makes me a troll to wish that the really good conservative who has worked hard for x number of terms can be reelected if we really want him or her, then so be it. What if that conservative has NOT become brain damaged. Do you want to throw him out too????
