The Real Climategate Scandal

Revelations over the last few weeks show that many important assertions in the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change were based on misquotes and false claims from environmental groups, not on published academic research as originally claimed. This is on top of the recent mess regarding data, where the three most relied-on data series used by the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 assessment report still not been released. Other information indicates that data have been systematically biased to produce a rise in measured temperatures when actual temperatures were falling or flat.
Take some of the false claims in the 2007 IPCC report.
– The IPCC claims that the Himalayan glaciers could melt away as soon as 2035. The forecast was based on a media interview with a single Indian glaciologist in 1999, and the Indian glaciologist who was interviewed, Syed Hasnain, says that he was misquoted, indeed he had provide no date. Professor Hasnain discovered the mistake in 2008 when he read the IPCC’s published report, but he said: “There are many mistakes in it. It is a very poorly made report. . . . My job is not to point out mistakes. And you know the might of the IPCC. What about all the other glaciologists around the world who did not speak out?”
Even more disturbingly, Rajendra Pachauri, the U.N.’s climate chief, first denied that he knew about the error before the Copenhagen global warming conference. He only admitted that he knew about it before the conference when a writer for the journal Science, Pallava Bagla, pointed to email correspondence that he had with Pachauri last fall.
– The IPCC warned that because of global warming the world had “suffered rapidly rising costs due to extreme weather-related events since the 1970s.” They cited one study to support their claim, but when the research was published in 2008, after the IPCC report was released, the study noted: “We find insufficient evidence to claim a statistical relationship between global temperature increase and catastrophe losses.”
– The IPCC warned that up to 40 percent of the Amazon rain forest might be wiped out by global warming, but the sole source for that claim was a non-refereed report authored by two people who the Sunday Times of London referred to as “two green activists,” one of them with the World Wildlife Fund.
– The IPCC even got wrong the percentage of the Netherlands that is below sea level. The report claims that the percent is 55 percent, when the right number is 26 percent.
On February 3rd, Mr. Pachauri however defended the UN’s IPCC report by saying that the critics “are people who deny the link between smoking and cancer; they are people who say that asbestos is as good as talcum powder. I hope that they apply [asbestos] to their faces every day.” While Pachauri admits that the IPCC was inaccurate about the Himalayan glaciers melting, he claimed that the attacks were motivated by “business interests” who “spread a lot of disinformation.”
Finally, it should be noted that Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office, which enforces that country’s freedom of information act regulations, has come to some conclusions regarding Climategate. The ICO found that the University of East Anglia breached violated British law by refusing to comply with requests for data concerning claims by its scientists that man-made emissions were causing global warming. The UK Daily Mail reports that “the scientists will escape prosecution because the offences took place more than six months ago.” Out of 105 freedom of information requests, Professor Phil Jones, who headed the university’s Climate Research Unit, only complied with 10 requests.
For too long global warming proponents have claimed that their claims can’t be questioned. Science should be more transparent than this. But relying on misreported news stories and white papers put out by non-scientists from advocacy cases isn’t science. Why these climate temperature data has been hidden and why researchers won’t answer questions on adjustments that they have made has become quite troubling. In this age of computers and website, there is no excuse for hiding data.

Uh… what science would that be, Mikatollah? Most articles reference the 2007 report which is now shown to be utterly flawed. Do you have some other sources we don't know about? Something that is based on actual science, not computer models or the opinions of activists?

It can't happen with the current DOJ line-up, but I'd think that the use of false and misleading data to apply for (and accept) federal grant money would add up to fraud. I'd sure like to see a serious investigation and a Grand Jury impaneled (even if applicable only to those within the US who scammed some of the billions).

Mr. Gore, MIA lately. Hmmmm, a bit fearful of being seen in public with all of the Climategate stuff hitting the news(of not the MSM). My guess is he is somewhere in DC right now. The Gore Effect is a dead give away.
The lack of debate on this issue, because it was declared by Gore that it was over, gives us a glimpse of his idea of global governance. I wish this despot wanna be would redirect himself and try to conquer malaria. It is something that can actually change the world and make it a better place. But unfortunately it goes against the progressive mindset of actually bringing people out of desperation. Gotta keep them down, otherwise they might not need the progressive to pretend to save them. I am all for bringing back DDT for the African nation. I have seen people suffering from malaria and it is not a pretty site. Gore is despicable along with all his minions through out the world.

They want the world to trust them, and believe that what they say is the absolute truth, then they go and lose the very data that supports their claims.

Now deniers don't work that way. When new evidence is presented they go into disinformation mode. It is easier because you don't have to go to college or do research.

But they never pointed out the flaws, lied about them and tried to cover them up. Plus, they only used the "science" that backed up their claims and disregarded the data that was outside their claims.
It was never "climate change", but global warming. When the data didn't support the warming part, the tagline was revised to "climate change" to make us think they weren't part of the agenda to force a redistribution of wealth from those that have to those that don't.

Pretty obvious you have gotten your info off of right wing blogs. Read the IPCC AR1 report and you will find it was called climate change… even back in 1990.
The Progressives have to lie about their agenda. Then they have to lie to cover up the lies. This process is repeated until a too big of a whopper is told, investigations begin and then the house of cards comes crashing down. But don't expect them to mea culpa, they will double down and plow forward. How can the European Socialist countries governments continue without these global warming taxes? Not only that but if they admitted global warming is a hoax, the citizens there would demand all monies paid into the hoax for years be returned. Yes I am afraid they have to continue with the agenda no matter how much a farce it is proven to be.
So when other scientists (not deniers, actual scientists) look at the data and see the flaws, point them out, but are rebuffed and ostracized, I guess we're all to believe the original data as correct, just because thay say so. Just like when the glacier story was published, and repeated by the president of the IPCC. It fit into the nice little package us Global Warming supporting data.

Science is composed of peer reviewed theories. Theories are the basis for our understanding for many different categories. From space travel, to computers, to Climate Change. They are, however, never proven. They are reviewed by peers trying to disprove. If you can't disprove, then the theory holds up. But it is still a theory. When you here someone say "its proven, the science is settled", You know they are full of it, becuase science is never settled. The only people who say these things are people trying to hide something, or someone who doesn't understand the scientific method.
I've not seen any climate scientists doing that. I did see Dr. Nye, the science guy on Rachel last night, but he isn't exactly a climate scientist. Sorry if I offended you with the high school dropout thing.

You want to follow the money, start with the $50 trillion in fossil fuels still in the ground that the energy companies want to burn. Now that's real money, and it is also what is at stake for oil and coal companies. So they are glad to spread a few billion around here or there to try and keep the public confused about warming.

Actually it does. The problem for scientists is they work in a world that is often so complicated that most of us don't have the background to begin to understand what they are talking about.
So when a scientist comes up with an idea he submits it for peer review where it will either be accepted or rejected by others who do have the technical background to understand it. If enough of them agree then the media will take an interest and science reporters will disseminate it to the public.
If you can't convince your fellow scientists, the public is not going to care what you come up with.

It was called Climate Change in 1990 because the climate, once again, wasn't cooperating with the then Global Cooling fanatics. You see, Mika, back in those days it was settled science that the world was going to end by Global Cooling. We were all going to freeze to death if we didn't do something NOW.
Then, lo and behold, the climate started to get warmer and Global Warming became the buzz phrase. The world then spent the better part of the 90s and 00s lamenting how we were all going to die NOW if we didn't do something about Global Warming.
Then, by golly, the climate started cooling and now we are back onto Climate Change again. Give it time. we'll be back to calling it Global Cooling and the fear mongers will be making photoshpped pictures of little babies freezing to death somewhere where a desert used to be.
Even you have to see how patently ridiculous that is, surely?

You're right, but "the science" is invalid without the unmodified raw data that supports the claim. This is “unavailable” to the public or other scientists, hence indisputable. If the pharmaceutical companies tried to pull this type of stunt, they would be justifiably buried under thousands of lawsuits. The Impact of the “Global Warming Crises” is as bad, or worse than anything a pharmaceutical company could ever pull.
What most critics of global warming want to see is the proof! Without the raw data and the parameters that were used to gather the raw data, advocates of global warming are the equivalent of the classic Snake Oil Salesman. Any rational supporter of global warming should be able to fall back on the raw data, not some arbitrary Graph, or summary.
If I would have access to the unmodified raw data and data acquisition parameters, and they supported the claims of global warming, I could probably support it along with a huge number of other people. But until that time, I’m not interested in snake oil!
