Who Got to Chris Matthews?: ‘Hardball’ Defense of Breitbart Memory-Holed
by John NolteChris Matthews strayed from the liberal talking points today. But don’t worry, it only happened for a little while. Two hours, in fact, before he was back to his old self, lashing out irrationally at conservatives. We’re not sure where Matthews’ original bout of intellectual honesty came from, but we’re pretty sure that some sort of JournoListy Intervention occurred to get him back on message.

For those of you who don’t know (and according to the latest ratings, that’s most of you), Matthews does a 5pm “Hardball” on MSNBC that repeats at 7pm. Today, during the 5pm hour, Matthews had as his guests hardcore leftists Joan Walsh of Salon.com and former Governor Howard Dean. The issue at hand was Shirley Sherrod’s promise to sue Andrew Breitbart. Well, that wasn’t the real issue at hand. The idea was to beat holy hell out of Breitbart, but things didn’t exactly go according to the JournoListy Playbook.
Believe it or not, Matthews defended Breitbart.
In the early part of the 5pm segment with Walsh and Dean, there appears to be some confusion over whether or not Matthews was aware of the fact that Breitbart posted two excerpts of Sherrod’s speech as opposed to the whole 35-plus minutes. But later in the segment — and this is important — after this discrepancy is cleared up and the full excerpt in question has been aired for Matthews and the “Hardball” audience (this, according to Newsbusters), a fully informed Matthews still defends Breitbart making the crucial and oft-ignored point that…
Well, there you go. [Quoting Ms. Sherrod] “I opened my eyes. I realized it wasn’t about black and white. It was, but it was about other things, about poverty.” So, Joan, that part, that part in there about redemptive revelation was actually in the initial tape.
Watch this part of the exchange below, and remember that this occurs after Matthews has seen the full excerpt in question. Whatever confusion there might have been earlier, is completely cleared up by this time:
—–
Well, obviously this couldn’t have sat well with the left-wing Journolistas who are now in full Destroy Breitbart mode and therefore in no mood for independent thinkers not fully on board with today’s talking points.
So rather than accept the fact that a fully informed Matthews was still intellectually honest enough to make the point that the rest of the MSM is willfully ignoring — that Ms. Sherrod’s redemptive revelation was not cut from the excerpted video — something inexplicable happened between the 5pm and 7pm broadcast, and it’s not crazy to speculate that this something was probably a whole lot of angry phone calls, a flood of scathing emails, and a producer meeting or two that included any and all variations of the word apostate.
An international story that’s grabbed thousands of headlines over the last week, and Matthews did a 180… between shows? Someone got to him. The MSNBC Thought Police? The JournoList Thought Police? (Did I just repeat myself?)
What else could it have been? Something happened. Something so effectively transforming that it spun Matthews completely around enough that sometime before the 7pm “Hardball” rerun was set to air, he magically decided he wanted a redo. And so for what might have been the first time in the show’s history, Matthews re-taped an entirely new program for the 7pm hour — a program that would allow him to make up for his short but near fatal bout of intellectual honesty and put him safely back in line and on the record with his left-wing pals. See for yourself…
Remember, the video above represents Matthews’ 5pm opinion of the Sherrod excerpt Breitbart posted. The video below represents Matthews’ 7pm opinion of that very same excerpt:
—–
What a difference a couple of hours makes! And oh, yes, Joan Walsh was much, much happier with this Chris Matthews. And so was Mediaite. I’m sure a big teddy bear bouquet from Media Matters is already on the way.
As you can see from the 7pm clip, Governor Dean wasn’t able to return for the magic redo, so another hardcore left-winger, Politico “reporter” Ken Vogel, was brought in to complete the left-wing echo chamber.
My favorite part of Vogel’s reportering analysis is his having to finally face the unhappy fact that Ms. Sherrod’s redemptive moment was indeed included in the Breitbart excerpt. Grief-stricken that this fact is now out there for the world to see, Mr. Vogel enters the first stage of grief — denial — and writes this inconvenient fact off as a mistake, as though Breitbart would’ve removed the moment of redemption if only he had seen it.
Well, the one person who removed that moment of redemption was Vogel himself when he declined to mention its existence in this Politico piece (co-authored with Keach Hagey) from the 22nd:
[Breitbart posted] a video misleadingly edited to make it appear that a black Agriculture Department employee named Shirley Sherrod was boasting of discriminating against a white farmer.
Big Government’s Mike Flynn addressed this wildly incorrect statement later that very same day:
At the very end of one of the video excerpt’s, Ms. Sherrod begins to explain how she later realized her initial discrimination of the white farmer was wrong. In Andrew’s article about the speech he noted
Eventually, her basic humanity informs that this white man is poor and needs help.
If we were trying to show that Ms. Sherrod was “boasting” of discrimination and were prone to editing the tape as evidence, wouldn’t we have cut that part out?
And yet this “journalist” has yet to correct the record.
Or should I call him a “JournoListo“?

The thing about discrimination is, to me anyway, it doesn't make any difference if you are white/black/brown/asian/or from mars…her (Sherrod) bias' was the same white/rich., poor/black…that's how she saw things..these leftist can spin it any way they want…she was talking to a room FULL of ONLY blacks!
It was great watching Dean and Walsh "promise" Chris they were right on the timing of the tapes. Yelling how Fox " was ready to show the clip" hours before Shilrleys " resignation". These people just don't give a sh*$ about honesty at all! I wonder if Chris is beginning to see what kind of craziness he is involved in. I doubt it.
Is it cold out? Is it freezing, you would think hell froze over for him to do that! Maybe for a microsecond in time the useful idiot sees the light and sees he is playing a direct hand/role in the destruction of the US.
Dean is a liar, he has no credibility, it was NEVER on Fox until way after she was canned. Someone needs to send him the actual copy of file Bret Baier aired on his show that was the entire Fox broadcast on that day! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V14rXSmovs
Just devastating to watch, those fools have ZERO defense to this vid. It was total genius for Baier or whomever at Fox to do this. Maybe Mathews watched this and re watched what Breitbart posted and was like uh oh! The only guilty party is Sherrod she has been running her mouth digging a deeper hole for herself and the "left".
They got nothing!
Time to throw the old rule book out the window and engage these destructive 'animals'(politicians, MSM, spec interests) on a new battlefield with new out of the box tactics through http://www.savingtherepublic.com
Did he get a dead fish fedexed to him?
It's sad that "SOFTBALL" had to cling to the "it was implied that the video was in the present tense" defense. Anything to stay the course I guess…
John, Just refer to them as journolists now, as opposed to real investigative journalists like Nick Pileggi or Michael Yon. The one changed letter says it all, and I'm sure it will piss them off no end. You know. "Dave Weigel, a former journolist for the Washington Post, is now working as journolist for Slate." You could even say Chris Matthews was a journalist at 5:00 but a journolist at 7:00. See how it works
That is devastating. Mathews redid his show because he made the mistake of pointing out that the "redemptive" part of Sherrod's speech was included in Breitbart's original posting? Because Dean rightfully looked like the ignoramus and lying POS that he is?
Democrats are lying, conniving scumbags.
As someone who has voted for many Democrats, I will never, ever, EVER vote for one again. And I'm a union member (and female) who voted for Obama for the Senate.
As people become better informed, they will leave the lying, conniving, racist, and disastrous policies Democratic Party. It will eventually consist of only extreme leftist totalitarians and the profoundly ignorant.
Loyal viewers of ABCNBCMSNBCCBSCNN would be Shocked! to find out what we know through alternative media outlets. It's as if they've been in a coma and awake to find out Dewey really didn't beat Truman. The msm has done a very good job of spiking / lying to their audience for all these many years.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!
To use a sports metaphor, Little Chrissy Tingles heard footsteps. He saw what the White House is willing to let happen to Julian Asange.
I'd really like an honest "history" on MSM about the Sherrod family and multi-millions they have received from a few law suits. One included the Sherrods receiving a radio station which they use, according to Mr. Sherrod to, "…stop the white man and his Uncle Toms from stealing our elections." Sounds like a racial comment to me!
Chris should have stayed with the 5PM segment. I’m guessing that it was Howard Dean that demanded Chris redo the segment because he realized how stupid he looked for saying that he didn’t see the whole tape much in the same way that the Obama administration didn’t see the whole tape before they fired Sherrod.
By flip flopping on his opinion Chris looks like the bigger moron.
Don't worry about Tingles, he momentarily lapsed into truthful, non-biased journalism (I'll bet THAT gave him a tingle as well).
But Joan and Howard were there to guide Tingles back into the moonbattery that is the left's calling card.
Dean is the biggest effin' liar in politics — he was already assured by Chris Wallace that Fox News never aired the Sherrod piece until after she'd resigned, yet he sticks to his story like an 11-yr. old schoolgirl with some great gossip.
It would be incredible if Tingles began to see the light through those rose-colored liberal glasses and squinting eyes.
What would MSNBC do if some of their people actually reactivated the section of their brains that originally brought them into the business of journalism? They'd have to fire people for being honest and objective about the news.
And let's go back to circa '94-'96 and ABC News' segment on Newt Gingrich's letting Medicare whither on the vine.
In that segment ABC News spliced Newt's words to make it sound like he said the aforementioned. In actually Newt's words were that the bureaucracy of the Medicare would wither on the vine because Newt's plan to run it more efficiently.
Pot calling kettle black.
When I was a child Detroit was a super city, then the Democrats took over,
and in only 60 years they have turned Detroit into a parking lot in Africa.
This is downright scary! Thank God for the internet with this site and others like it! Where else could we see the downright distortion of information! Dean is a stooge….his intent was to blackball Fox News… over and over again. The Salon editor is doing the grovelling and sniveling that has become status quo for liberal pressers to appease minority groups and try to maintain a semblance of relevance.
Perhaps Chris has a chance at redemption and will have some sleepless nights when he realizes what a tool he has become.
I can't believe they retaped the show! That really is just proof of the true nature of our media. There is no journalistic credibility in the MSM… I am so glad I don't have cable, and the new "digital" tv won't come in in my house so I don't have to put up with this tripe!
They are so much like Pavlov's Dogs. Ring the bell.
Great fun watching Barry’s minions tie themselves into knots. Breitbart must be destroyed, he has the courage to use Alinsky tactics on the Alinskyites and it worked like a charm. Right on Andrew! …keep up the good work, the left is squirming.
It must be so hard for them to keep the lie up and running 24/7/365. How do they do it? Matthews slipped away from the talking points and just plainly stated the truth for once. How did it feel Chris? The truth is a wonderful thing. It's the best thing. It's really the only thing that matters.
Man alive…Dean's new hair color looks sweet! Unfortunately, he is still really, really dumb.
Looks like they had to up the dose of koolaid for Chris Tingle. They can't allow it to wear off in the middle of another one of his leftist rants, now can they?
"For those of you who don’t know (and according to the latest ratings, that’s most of you), Matthews does a 5pm “Hardball” on MSNBC that repeats at 7pm."
Haha, classic. Thanks for the laugh, its been a long week….
These people are doing the same thing here with the Fox coverage as they did with the N-word by the Tea Parties. Just keep say the lie, until it is viewed as the truth. Spin, spin, spin. Lie, lie, lie.
Amazing!!! This is getting ridiculous. Sherrod is a racist, she is a federal official, and she got busted with her own words. Her actions, and that of her husband, show she did not have that so called redifining moment. These Progressive/Socialist are downplaying the Black Panther incident, the racism and sexism against whites in the fianancial bill, the racism in the health care bill, and a return to blaming black crime on social circumstances clearly shows a clear trend towards discrimination against whites and men in particular. We ignore these incidences and signals because we dont want to be accused of racism, meanwhile they use racism to undermine the majority population's opinion and position.
Maybe the old tingler had a moment of sanity. Is it sweeps time? I do have to say though, mentioning intellectual and Chris Mathews in the same sentence is nearly heretic. Did I do that? LOL
I'm guessing the Journ-OBAMA-list folks must have some real dirt on Matthews.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Don't get too excited.
The only thing Mathews may have learned is
You disagree with the ruling class and you may find yourself on the outside looking in.
The mantra from the right when addressing members of the MSM should be, could you clarify for me, were you a member of the JournOlist? Oh, in that case I will talk slow so you can transmit my words exactly as I said them rather than slanting them to fit your view of the world. Could I please have a recorder turned on for this session? Put the light of public shame on them.
Where's our daily bigot race baiting troll? Guess crow doesn't taste too good.
Chris Matthews is afraid that when Comcast buys NBC that he will be unemployed.
You'll be back. A little time hanging out with the "family values" crowd will send you scurrying back home.
BG's reporting on this is so excellent. A really good job of showing the true character of these dirt bags. When I watched the video of the first show I knew there was something awry. Tingles just doesn't do the intellectually honest thing unless it matches his narrative. Watching these 3 apparatchiks lie their asses off in the 2nd edition of the show was oh, so creepy. They are such bad people. Never forget who they are. Keep up the good work BG.
If Matthews had a spine, he would realize the opportunity before him. He could single himself out by becoming an honest reporter/interview. It sure would freak out the libs and gain him some viewers. When will the liberal media pawns wake and see how they are manipulated and used by their radical masters.
The media has sold it's soul to the devil.
I never thought I would see the day when the MEDIA not only advocated censorship, but practiced it against their own!
Madazhell said:

Exactly – and of course Obama does it constantly. Notice how there's less noisy criticism about his almost daily blame game of the Bush admin for the economic crisis etc?
The juvenile idiots of JournoList, and even the conservative commentators, are so used to his playing the Bush card, it doesn't even bother them anymore.
The Maoist propagandists at the WH & Media Matters, OFA, CAP, etc. have done their insidious work very well.
Talking to Dean must be like talking to a ball of earwax….
Only MessNBC would find a blowhard moonbat like Dean credible at all.
I was surprised by Chris Matthews defending Breitbart at first on his show…only to back peddle and to rant about Breitbart's whiteness and alleged racism, you know, like a good progressive. The truth was too inconvenient.
Yet the left wants us to believe they are honest and transparent. Transparent, yes. We can see right through them. Honest, not a chance..
The takeaway here is that this all is about more than just the economy, or some set of policies, no matter how important. Look what happened here. Independent thinking and speech that departed even a little from the Grand Leftist Orthodoxy was quickly squelched in an extraordinary way.
There's a direct correlation between this type of thing and the amount of power accumulated in Washington, and particularly in the Obama administration. Liberty itself is threatened.
Who are these hacks and morons? The guy who implies that the redemptive comments at the end of the tape were the result of amateurishness doesn't also acknowledge that Breitbart himself point out those redemptive comments in his own original Big Government post. It's right there in black and white for anybody with two brain cells to rub together to see.
Mathews was made an offer he just couldn't refuse……………
By the time Fox had it on their website, she was already fired. That's why it was on their website, the headline was something like "USDA offical fired (or resigned) for remarks at NAACP event" or some such. Point is that she was already fired by the time it was on the Fox website. By that time, it WAS a news story that she WAS fired.
Sort of missing in the entire commentary is the overall dig at FOX NEWS which did not air anything about the affair until AFTER the Glenn beck Show and over thirty minutes after the President's office had announced she had been fired. Now we know that for all her penitent talk, her husband and her have been highly active in what would appear to most people to be extremely racist and discriminatory politics (See the New American Thinker Article available by link from this web-site).
Any contention that FOX is at fault for anything flies completely in the face of the time-line and any contention that AB is at fault has to rest completely on proof that he was in anyway attempting to put Ms. Sherrod in a negative light out of context – and proving that will be nigh unto impossible if he has electronic forensic proof (fairly easily obtained) otherwise. After reading about her recent past (last decade) and her husband and political activities during the last ten years, I would say she and he are guite eloquent in espousing quite racially divisive speech and apears not at all penitent. While she may have helped poor white farmers equally, her long standing activism says she is still fairly racially biased and that is sad.
To be honest, I can understand much of the internal disgust Black-Americans may have over their enslaved heritage. Who wouldn't be pissed off. But the other more imperative and present reality is, White, Latino, Asian and Native Americans all have their historical crosses to bear and I know of no one of any of those groups that now or ever did enslave anyone. Americans obsessed with the now distant past need to get out of the negative victim role. No white person today enslaved anyone. Nobody in my family ever enslaved anyone. While there are still people of all backgrounds with racially ugly views, they are truly few in numbers these days, especially among white America.
The fact is, we U.S. citizens and legal emigrants intending to stay are ALL Americans first and if we would stop allowing one particular political party (the party of the a$$) subdivide and Balkinize us, we could get back to being the greatest nation on earth like we were before the progressive left came along to divide us up and judge us for the colors of our skin and not the content of our character as the Great Dr. King wished. .
He's messing with their heads! Ha ha ha ! They don't like that Alinski crap played on them!
I just don't know how Matthews gets to sleep at night with his Catholic conscience.
Exceptionally well stated LD……….
Just more proof that the MSM is one big Journolist — they are all compromised. Why wouldn't they be? Wake up!
They are expecting $60 billion in media subsidies from the Obama regime to survive. They already ARE the regime. They are moving as fast as they can because time is not on any of their sides in this before they are totally outed.
.
Detroit is a sad tale of Utopian liberal failure that they all want to forget.
I saw the documentary on how it happened and it is shocking. It was the model Utopian social welfare city of Johnson's Great Society in America and it was purposefully given everything. Industrial base, money, housing, subsidies and yet Detroit degraded itself into oblivion through corruption sloth and greed.
.
A broken clock is still right twice a day. Until today, though, that was approximately two more times than Matthews.
I suspect it might be TV's Andy Levey who got to Matthews the way he go the few times this subject has come up on Red Eye.
Obviously, the Masters of MSNBC, the DNC, got to Matthews for going off the Democratic Plantation.
Okay, this is beyond creepy.
Also, it's interesting that there are no lefty trolls with anything to say.
I guess it will take them a few days to actually come up with a good story.
I only saw the 7pm version of this last night under the assumption that this was the same episode that ran two hours earlier. To learn today that Matthews ran two 'editions' of this story and that the first one included that blowhard Howard Dean blows my mind. He made Dean look like a bumbling imbecile in the first clip (not a difficult feat, I'll admit) with his confession that he never even saw the original clip here before spouting his idiotic opinions on the story. When I first learned about this story on Glenn Beck on July 20, I took the time to visit this site to view the video clip. I mean, it was less than three minutes long. Dean's bullshit excuse that all he saw was the truncated version on FOX makes him look like a total chump. 'You sound like Chris Wallace' he says as Matthews presses the point that the exculpatory evidence was included in the original clip. Walsh's claim that news outlets clipped the video further to support their aims is absolutely true. MSNBC did exactly that on all their evening shows. They cut out the 'redemptive moment' when airing the clip they claimed AB posted, then added in the redemptive moment with the claim that they received it from the NAACP. This all happened on 7/20 on The Ed Show, Hardball, and Countdown. Then on Wednesday or Thursday Chuck Todd, sitting in for Olbermann, even clipped the video to prove that the audience didn't laugh at her racist statements, in the attempt to invalidate AB's claim for originally posting the clip. He purposely didn't show the section where she mentions deciding just how much help she was going to offer where the audience guffaws are impossible to ignore, instead showing the portion right after that where she mentions how she had always been helping black farmers keep their land and was now faced with helping a white farmer keep his land.
Joan Walsh is a complete fool. Firstly, note in the second edition that she says Sherrod ultimately helped the 'black farmer'. Funny slip, that, and she says it twice. Then comes her brilliant reasoning as to why AB left in the 'redemptive moment'– that he and the folks here 'didn't understand what they saw'. What an arrogant ass she is. At least Vogel offers up the fact that AB posted the entirety of what he received from his anonymous source, even though he later suggests that AB and the BG staff didn't watch the whole clip. If they didn't, then who the hell put the text of her speech on the screen? Did it just magically appear? Please.
In the redux, notice how Matthews decides to emphasize the intro text to the clip and the erroneous statement that Sherrod had discriminated against the white farmer as a USDA official. Walsh mentions this in her first spiel and Matthews runs hard with it, as it's probably the only aspect that could work in Sherrod's favor. He calls this 'the most damning thing he did' ignoring, of course, the fact that a correction was placed above the original clip before I even got around to watching it on the evening of 7/20. News media make corrections to errors in their stories all the time– it's part of the journalistic process. Just look at page two of any New York Times. Furthermore, this original assumption only serves to support AB's claim that he didn't have access to any more of the original Sherrod speech than what he posted. He was working with what he had, and none of it indicates when or in what capacity she was working when she was confronted by the white farmer.
This whole episode only serves to emphasize the complete tool Matthews is and how wrapped up he is in the progressive agenda. He showed a hint of real journalistic skill in the first session, only to negate it all two hours later. Priceless stuff.
This explains why Matthews' mind was changed for him between 5pm and 7pm. MSNBC wants it to go unnoticed that they did exactly what they've wrongly accused Breitbart of doing. Under normal circumstances, they wouldn't care, but with Sherrod talking about suing Breitbart for doing what MSNBC actually did…well, the redux makes sense now.
Not journolists but journOlists. Emphasize that O for Oilbama, their Obamessiah, The Won.
Sorta hard to refute when BOTH versions are there, more or less side-by-side, for anyone to view. I suppose these morons can fall back on their "old faithful" excuse. "It was Bush's fault."
In an effort to find which way the top spins best… you are bound to find the "right thing" every once in a while. However… if you keep on spinning with the hopes of getting a better spin and intentionally ignoring the "right thing" you will make yourself (and others) very dizzy.
Sorry…. I think I will go throw up now.
This entire case is amazing. Lets say I sit around whining about having to talk to a black person, complaining that there are white people I could be helping – a room full of white people cheer me on. sometime later, 43 minutes later or something I decide that I learned a lesson.
There is no way at all that anyone would mention anything 'redemptive' I would be ran out of whatever position I held and taunted for eternity.
Now lets apply this same thing to any known conservative in recent history. There would be mobs protesting around the country.
So the lesson is: Oh no, something that makes the left look bad, a racist on the left – rationalize and scrub it as fast as possible, explain it away and attack whomever dared put it out.
Someone on the right disagrees? – smear them as a racist at all costs with little or no evidence and do so with complete impunity.
Well, that start was very short-lived, and I am sure they will not do the "right thing" again. I am still chortling at how big of an incompetent ass Howard Dean came out looking, though.
This is true, because before the Sherrod incident, I will admit I was only marginally aware of Breitbart and not very keen on following the political machine in general. Since then, as my presence here will attest, much has changed. And I am sure that I am not the only newcomer here as a result of Breitbart's efforts of late.
Exactly. Just to prove my point, here are links to the episodes from July 20, 2010 of Hardball, Countdown, and Rachel Maddow.
First comes Hardball where, to his credit, Chris Matthews includes Sherrod's redemptive moment yet then goes on to accuse Mr. Breitbart of lying and gets Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post and Michelle Bernard of whatever it is she’s from to do the same. 'You know, that‘s not journalism. I mean, it‘s lying, is what it is,' says Robinson, 'And I think we ought to call it for what it is.' Matthews jumps on the timeline issue, noting that Sherrod is recounting an incident from 24 years ago and before she was a USDA official. That a correction had by that point already been posted to the original clip and text intro here on BG, is seemingly irrelevant. He makes a big case out of this error, implying that it was an intentional misrepresentation by saying: 'And the dishonesty, the deceit, the evil of this Web site [BG] is to put this out as if it‘s something she did while she‘s on watch as a government official under the Obama administration so they can tag Obama with this.'
video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmOYl0_sz6o
transcript here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38343790/ns/msnbc_tv-...
Then on Countdown, Lawrence O'Donnell presents the video to first exclude the redemptive moment, interjects a quick run-through of the narrative in his own words, then adds the redemptive portion from Breitbart’s clip, in fact mentioning that it was from the 'same video that Breitbart posted'. Then comes a quote from Sherrod in which she explains the turning point moment we just saw from Breitbart’s clip. O'Donnell then presents a further excerpt of her redemption taken from 'the full speech' released that day by the NAACP, prefacing the clip with, 'Here is part of the video that Mr. Breitbart did not want you to see and did not post on his website.' Note that this extra bit adds nothing more substantially that the redemptive moment from the Breitbart clip didn’t already include. Rich versus poor not just black versus white, yadda yadda yadda.
video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXeHTLP8GLg
transcript here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38341971/ns/msnbc_tv-...
Finally, Rachel Maddow presents the video cut up just as O’Donnell did in the previous hour. She stops the clip at Sherrod’s confession ‘So, I didn‘t give him the full force of what I could do.’ Like Chris Matthews two hours earlier, Maddow corrects the already-by-then-corrected timeline to point out that Sherrod was describing an incident from 1986 when she was not an employee of the USDA. She then presents the Spooner family’s testimony and their defense of Sherrod before airing the redemptive moment. Since Maddow is focused primarily on criticizing Fox News’ handling of the story, Andrew Breitbart’s name never comes up. Yet the mainstream media has been characterizing Breitbart, Fox News, and BigGovernment as more or less the same entity in this incident since the get-go, so the effect is still the same. One gets the impression that Mrs. Sherrod’s turning point moment had been deliberately spliced out, at least on the Fox News programs.
video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptbuIme-iCc
transcript here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38343831/ns/msnbc_tv-...
To be honest, Maddow might have a point about the way Fox handled the story. I don’t watch any of their news programs and find it quite likely that they played up the racism aspect of Sherrod’s story and ran with that without paying any attention to the redemptive moment that was in Mr. Breitbart’s original clip. However, by this point the NAACP and USDA were guilty of exactly the same offense and both had offered their recriminations of Mrs. Sherrod’s seemingly racist attitudes. What would one expect Fox to do at that juncture?
Same here, Greasy. I'd been aware of Mr. Breitbart through those ACORN tapes but never visited this site until this latest incident. Once I started seeing how the left (especially MSNBC) was spinning the story, I've become a regular visitor.
It makes me wish I'd visited during the ACORN controversy because the same accusations ('heavily edited', 'selectively edited', 'doctored', etc.) were leveled against Mr. Breitbart back then. As if all those ACORN people were snookered into giving advice to a pimp and his prostitute on how to set up a house of ill-repute filled with underage foreign prostitutes. I didn't believe the claims of the mainstream media then, and after this Sherrod incident I sure as hell don't believe them now.
I love the way Walsh tries to squeeze in that NBPP story at every opportunity. At least Chris Matthews had the sense to shut her up about it and stick to the story at hand.
Imagine the field day that the left would have had if, instead of angry looking Black Panthers standing outside of polling places, it was a couple of angry looking rednecks with Aryan nation tattoos. See what sort of 'non-story' they would have made of it then.
Walsh is a joke. Just look at the way she excused Sherrod's racism on CNN's Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz to get an idea of the kind of crazy she is:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2010/0...
Better yet, follow the story from Matt Lewis' point of view:
http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/07/25/joan-wals...
I'm with you all the way, gerald. It seems to me that the more the Lamestream Media demonizes Breitbart, the more they continue to make people aware of his alternative to the deceptive (ahem) "journalism" the liberal media tries to force-feed the public. In trying to create a monster, they are creating a modern-day folk hero.
