The Cost of Voting No on Ohio Issue 2: $1200 to $1500 Per School District Resident
by Jason HartOpponents of the reforms in Ohio Issue 2 blame busted local budgets on the way Governor Kasich handled the $8 billion deficit Ted Strickland left behind. In effect, government union bosses who thrive on a broken status quo insist the problem is too little spending. Like all leftists who decry spending cuts, union bosses want to raise Ohioans’ taxes.
For proof, consider Ohio school districts’ five-year forecasts from October 2010. Based on papered-over Strickland state figures – before Governor Kasich was even elected – districts projected major shortfalls by 2015. If Ohio votes down Issue 2, how will local leaders cover these deficits? Layoffs, higher taxes, program cuts? Choose any combination of the three.
Without Senate Bill 5, every resident of these Ohio school districts would have to pay between $1200 and $1500 in 2015 to cover the deficits forecast last fall. Check below the fold to see a chart of the tax burden for residents in several districts:
| Lakewood Local School District | $1,498 |
| Princeton City School District | $1,383 |
| Upper Scioto Valley Local School District | $1,376 |
| Hudson City School District | $1,368 |
| Avon Lake City School District | $1,345 |
| St. Marys City School District | $1,333 |
| Osnaburg Local School District | $1,314 |
| Maple Heights City School District | $1,293 |
| Berlin-Milan Local School District | $1,292 |
| Nordonia Hills City School District | $1,283 |
| Russia Local School District | $1,276 |
| Huber Heights City School District | $1,273 |
| Northmont City School District | $1,273 |
| Valley View Local School District | $1,266 |
| Bradford Exempted Village School District | $1,262 |
| Southwest Licking Local School District | $1,260 |
| Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District | $1,251 |
| Oakwood City School District | $1,249 |
| North Olmsted City School District | $1,242 |
| Medina City School District | $1,240 |
| Beachwood City School District | $1,213 |
In 2010, more than 450 Ohio school districts forecast deficits amounting to more than $100 per resident by 2015. These 21 districts aren’t even the worst examples! Unfortunately for Ohio union bosses, heated rhetoric won’t melt mathematical reality. With a Yes vote on Issue 2, Ohioans can make it easier for school districts throughout the state to address deficits without raising taxes, reducing services, or firing teachers.
Get the facts behind the anti-reform smear campaign, check out county-by-county school district forecasts, and then vote Yes on Issue 2!

Would more money make the kids smarter? Would more money make the teachers teach better? Would more money lead to higher test scores? NO. More money would make the unions, well, have more money.
Locality by locality, it would appear that this is another case of dumbocrats doing it to themselves.
If every Ohio residence wants to pay $1200 + in union dues let them. America is a wonderful place for the uniformed.
This is a huge issue for the Unions, like Wisconsin was. They know if they lose this, they are on their very last leg. They will pour millions of dollars into lying about what the real issue is, and that is extorting money from their members to support the Communist Democratic movement. FACT.
I think they call that "F'ing yourself".
Rush says something like, "stupidity is the most expensive commodity".
I'm counting on a number of school levies crashing and burning in this economic climate no matter which way issue 2 goes.
Agreed. The question is – "Are they winning"? The polls seem to show that, but there have been a lot of questions surrounding the reliability of the polls.
Ohio's rats lock arms with this and ruining non-union grocery stores. The amount of misleading commercials and attacks on local radio talk shows all to give the impression that the majority is against it, but they do point out one truth, why is not all of Columbus under this?
This is just craziness, but until the people of Ohio have enough of the union scare tactics it won't change. Sooner or later, though, even unions will find it tough to get blood from a turnip. Greece.
Just like when Rush asked "How many firemen do we hire in order to attain zero fires and how many police do we hire in order to arrive at zero crime?"
The teachers (and their unions) have become much more well compensated over the course of my lifetime and the students that they turn out have not reflected that trend one iota. In fact, it seems that they are worse than they were back when teachers were at the low end of compensation.
Let's save ourselves a whole lot of money and go back to the 1960's teacher salaries. If the students don't get any dumber than they are now, then we haven't lost a thing.
I will be voting yes on issue 2 Nov.8. Wish everyone on the Big sites lived in Ohio on that day.
PS…as a poll worker I will see the voting machine readouts when we close the polls on Tues at 7:30 . Have my fingers crossed.
I live in Ohio and I am afraid that the unions have been too effective in getting their message of fear out to the citizenry. Issue 2 is going to repeal SB5, Ohio is going to slip further into financial depression, and more and more jobs will flee to other states. I drive through Cleveland and Akron, formerly booming towns, not to mention Youngstown, and see nothing but boarded up shop windows and vacant homes in disrepair. As in most hard hit states the public sector continues to become more important and pensions, running huge deficits, are supported by the private workforce and Ohio suffers. I'm questioning how l much longer I stay in my beloved state before I move.
Exactly. My local school district in Northeast Ohio can expect a very long run of No votes from me. Renewals, too. Hey, I can lower my prop taxes by not perpetuating the misuse of the funds.
Well, I guess we'll find out something about the collective intelligence of Ohio, then.
These are the IDIOTS that are teaching your children…NOTHING, they are only in it for the money!!!
Defeat the public sector unions and America wins.
I think you meant uninformed. No biggie, though. I skip letters all the time. Your thought is correct. The Republicans in Ohio need to plaster the chart everywhere and talk it up big time.
The unions ARE the problem. They have millions to spend on campaigns, but not enough for the schools.
You are right I did mean uninformed, then again the way this country is going it may be lead by the uniformed
.
As an Ohio resident, all I can say is that if SB 5 is repealed I'll be heading for South Carolina sooner
rather than later. I'm not going to wait until the last minute to get off the Titanic.
Come to think of it, you could be correct to begin with if dictator Obama gets 4 more years.
In the last week the Ohio teachers union has charged each member of $50 to fight Issue 2, a political issue. This mandatory fee by the union, while the top union officials make 3 times the average salary then "the common worker" teacher they represent. Given recent history, where do you folks in Ohio really think the extra $1500 per year by 2015 will go? Suckers…..
Without lube.
Whether they win or lose may depend on how much bribing, intimidating, cheating the unions are able to do. There has to be MANY polls watchers to catch those dead people and multiple and illegal voters.
The vote count needs to be winning this issue with an ACORN proof margin.
'Kasich Hates Kids"…..Is that the only thing that moron could come up with!!…They have no good arguments, just play on the emotions all the time!!
I plan on voting "yes" but one thing left out of this story (unless I missed it) is how does SB 5 save that $1200/resident?
What a fine and thoughtful placard pictured above. Right up there with "Kachish Is A Big Doo-Doo Butt." My God these people are cognitively-challenged!
I look forward to any reports you will have for us after this vote. Good luck OH!
I find it scary that you don't know. If the public union folks don't help pay for their pensions and benefits, then the taxpayers must foot the whole bill. If you get a chance – read how the changes have helped the communities (taxpayers) of WI.
Clarification: I'm concerned that the public has not been educated as to the benefits and importance of this vote. This lack of understanding makes it easier for the emotional union campaign to be successful.
I didn't say I didn't know- I said it was left out of the story. I've worked with school districts for years and am fully aware of all the pitfalls of unionized public employees, especially teachers. In addition, many public employees do pay towards benefits, just not all. I think it's close to 30% that do. That's been one of the problems of the vote yes campaign-they're not clear on this. I also think it was a mistake adding police and fire fighters in with SB 5-they should have been handled separately, like in Wisconsin.
The hell with Ohio They are the ones who helped put us in this mess. That includes this foriegner we have as a President…
The problem is the rest of the state residents have to suffer because of the greed, corruption, and power grabs brought on by the union bosses with the help of the greedy politicians and some union members.
When the money runs out, so do the unions.
I wish you and all of Ohio the very best. Make sure you call everyone you know to go vote, then have them call everyone they know, etc.
Just make sure to get all your friends and family to vote yes on 2. Don't give up the ship yet as they want you to think they have it in the bag, they are desperate.
Why, what's the difference? Public sector means all of the public sector. When you leave Firefighters and police out of the equation just leaves another way for them to try again…after all if the police don't get a raise or better benefits there will be less police and more crime…ask Biden. The police and firefighters have very strong unions and try to make sure they put their bosses into office. Public sector unions have run their course and have been found to be a very bad and destructive practice.
You can't paint the whole state with such a broad brush. I'll bet the state surprises us all and votes yes on 2, if for no other reason than their own survival depends on it.
AZ, I agree. I think leaving them out is a good idea only because of the emotional side of things-their arguments here in their anti-Issue 2 ads have been very effective. Even though they are misleading, they have been very effective. Just guessing, but that could be why they were left out of the Wisconsin bill. Then again, I've been wrong before.
