Honoring SSG Sal Giunta, Likely First Living Medal of Honor Recipient Since the Vietnam War
by Jim Hanson**Post updated since publication.
SSG Sal Giunta, a paratrooper w/ the 173rd Airborne, is likely to be the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War. He earned this by charging a group of Taliban who were trying to make off with a wounded comrade in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan. His actions broke the Taliban’s attack and allowed him to regain control of SGT Josh Brennan. He also saved the lives of the many other members of his unit who had been caught in a near ambush by the Taliban. Giunta didn’t hesitate one second before advancing on his own to ensure the enemy would never take one of ours, but sadly Josh Brennan was too badly wounded too survive. His cousin PVT Joe Brennan recently graduated airborne school and has joined the same unit proudly carrying on Josh’s memory.
The 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 503rd Infantry Regiment “The Rock” deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 for 15 months of the most intense combat any US unit has faced in this war. During the time they spent on the border with Pakistan, this one battalion averaged three troops in contact incidents every day. They were right in the path of the Taliban’s major push back into Afghanistan after years of resting, recruiting and retraining in their safe havens in Pakistan. The Rock proudly upheld the tradition of our airborne forces in some of the most inhospitable terrain on Earth. SSG Giunta was a member of Battle Company and the exploits of some of his compatriots in that unit are vividly chronicled in Sebastian Junger’s book “War” and the documentary “Restrepo” (in theaters now) he made with Tim Hetherington. The two spent a total of five months with a platoon from Battle Company and the book and film show the tremendous challenges these men faced and overcame.
Giunta was a Specialist when the action occurred and his squad was hit with a well-planned ambush at extremely close range. He was the trail team leader and Josh Brennan was the lead. When the fighting started Brennan was severely wounded, their squad leader was knocked to the ground, their medic was killed and several others were wounded. Giunta immediately began maneuvering toward the enemy throwing grenades and eventually charging them when he saw two of them hauling Josh away. He emptied a magazine killing one and wounding the other and grabbed Brennan telling Josh to stay with him so that he would get a chance to tell heroic stories. They did get Brennan on a medevac chopper, but unfortunately his wounds were too severe and he didn’t survive. But Giunta’s actions stopped the Taliban from taking him and by running headlong at the enemy he disrupted the ambush. SSG Giunta’s story can be read in Junger’s book “War” starting on page 115.
It has been far too long since we have awarded the Medal of Honor to someone who survived, and SSG Giunta is a wonderful addition to the ranks of those who have earned our country’s highest honor. There are a number of others under consideration for this decoration and hopefully this is a sign that more of these brave warriors will be recognized. We have heard this was approved by the White House and they are only waiting to set a date for the ceremony.
We salute SSG Giunta and all who serve or have served our country. We are also proud to announce that Andrew Breitbart will be launching a new site called Big Peace on July 4th to focus on the efforts of our troops to spread freedom and liberty and all of those who work to ensure our national security.

Awesome brave young men like SSG Salvatore Giunta renew my faith in America. If we are still good enough to bring one up like him, maybe we will make it. God bless you Sergeant and thank you for your service.
With the well deserved cynicism about our political leaders, patriotic and heroic men and women like Sal Giunta give REAL hope that a change for the good will come to our great nation. SSG Giunta's bravery in the face of death makes him well deserving of the Medal of Honor. God bless our troops and God bless America.
the truth is our military has always had the tremendous advantage of soldiers like SSG Giunta. American soldiers are the best in the world and always have been since 1775.
Sadly, I read earlier in the Wash Post that the white house was considering this decoration based on what the awarding of it could do to mend fences with the military.
To any who would paint themselves into the portrait of those who have served with honer in harms way………….may a paux be visited upon you. When one reads of the deeds of Medal of Honor recipients it brings tears to the eyes, a lump in the throat and mostl, a swelling of pride in the Heart! Heros' designated by documented citation of those who witness their action are the last to claim valor, they always state the opposite of what is reality………….anyone would have done the same! Anyone would not have, only those committed to freedom and understand it true price are willing to lay down lifes' blood to insure that freedom is preserved. To all the wanna-be "I served" politicians who in fact turn out to be frauds………….hang you heads in shame, for we, those who served either in "Theater" or in supporting roles stateside of some other area beside combat, we know the difference, we stand in AWE of men like SSG Giunta, we thank God men like him exist, but we would never equate what we did as equal. Again, those who embellish their resume to include service they did not accomplish…………….hang you heads, skulk into the muck you deserve to inhabit.
There were a couple of medals I never wanted when I was serving, The Purple Heart, and the Medal of Honor, as my pain threshhold hovers somewhere around that of a 6 year old girls usually these medals mean some pretty bad things have happened. It gladens my heart to see a smiling face associated with this honor – to SSG Giunt – thank you for what you do for our counrty, God bless, and stay safe.
porter, you left out thanks to SSG Giunta, who puts his life on the line so you can glibly make a disparaging remark about your country's laws.
My comment constituted thanks.
Obviously the man is in the military. Obviously he is not an illegal. Obviously you are an asshole.
God Bless you Sir and thank you ……….
Still waiting for you to thank the SSG for putting his life on the line so a disgrace like you can speak freely. What a pathetic, little person you are. Oh, and you're a douche bag.
" Better have your papers ready boy! " — sounds like we have a racist here, doesn't it?
And an unusually ignorant one. "Giunta" is Italian.
Sal: From your friends in the 504PIR…thanks bud….
"boy" ?
This MAN has put his life on the line for "boys" like you .

city neighborhoods and rural communities used to be loaded with guys like Sal,………..
now most of the "bad asses" do their thing in front of a screen.
To the diminishing few and the proud,…….thanks.
well… most racists are ignorant, so not too surprising. Just look at our Justice Dept.
Then why would it be deleted by the administrator?
SSG Sal Guinta should ask for Gen. McCrystal to give him the well deserved Medal of Honor.
DittO, Chi Ralph……..very well said
Here we are paying tribute to a very brave Soldier and you decide to show up with your typical racist rant to besmirch this man's time in the spotlight.
A true American. Thank you for your service, Sir.
Whether or not he gets the Medal of Honor this man is a great soldier and a great American.
One thing that is great about living in West Virginia is that around these parts, we have tremendous respect for the military. It is not uncommon for ordinary people around here to let them ahead in line, hold doors open, always convey respect, and even buy drinks and meals. Almost everyone around here has family and friends who have been in this war.
I'd say 'thank you" to SSG Giunta, but there's a lump in my throat
Thank you for your service…It's young men and women like this that make this
a wonderful country!!…They are a source of great pride!! God Bless You All.
Very impressive young men.
Things like this make me feel really old.
Thanks to SSG Giunta and the men and women that have served our country, your sacrifices allow us to be able to enjoy this weekend celebrating Independence Day. As we enjoy our weekend here in the States with our family and friends, watching our children riding their bicycles in the parades, while we are Bar-B-Queuing our food. We need to gather all around together for a moment of silence to remember all those that have given so much for our freedom like SSG Giunta.
Big Peace out to you Jim Hanson and may Victory come our way, your going to love us civilians
Thank you my brother. From the bottom of my heart and God bless you.
CL
you said the exact thing i was thinking as i read this
Thank you SSG Giunta
Salvatore is a popular Italian name also.
My grandfather Luigi came to America in 1912 legally through Ellis Island. He signed up to fight for the UNITED STATES in WW I. That is how he got his American citizenship, of which he was very proud of. He and my grandmother raised 4 Americans, two of which fought for the UNITED STATES in WW II. One gave his life.
Congratulations to this soldier. God bless him. I just feel sad for him to come home and see the mess that Obama has made of this country. Its guys like him who will lead us into the future and preserve this country.
God bless the US military and keep them safe. Oh, and–Let them fight!
Asshat
Amazing person, amazing soldier-

What would we do without them ?
Dio Bless Lei Sgt. Salvatore Giunta.

It is humbling in the extreme to read about such bravery.
We're blessed to have such wonderful people out there between us and those who would do us harm.
God bless 'em all.
Look at that smile, and at those sparkling brown eyes, Sal and guys just like him are our future.
If he can risk his life in this way, the least we can do is get off our asses, work hard enough to give
them the country they deserve when their fight for US all is finished.
GOD BLESS the UNITED STATES of AMERICA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SSG Salvatore Giunta is a true American hero. Thank you, SSG Giunta.

God bless you Sir.
If only the so-called leadership in Washington were worthy of these brave and patriotic men and women in uniform.
I watched RP….I have not liked this Afghan War for a long time now for the exact reasons RP stated….
It's take the gloves off or leave…
The entire friggin' country of "Afstanigan" is NOT worth the live of ONE US Marine or soldier….
How is it possible Sal Giunta and Barack Obama are from the same Country…
Something weird here…
Tahnks for your service, Sal..
A true hero who deserves our countries greatest honor……No Obama I'm not talking about your stupid Pacifist medal of restraint, I'm referring about the Medal of Honor.
SSG Giunta, I am humbled by your love for your fellow soldiers, and your gallantry in protecting them. Thank you for protecting all of us here, as well. You are a shining example, and an American hero.
Right on, HPD.
HPjr
I find that so amazing…….The bravest, most loyal troops ever known to man,
being led by the worst bunch of sissified pansies ever to darken the hallways of the Capitol…
SSG Giunta probably has enough hair on his ass to weave an indian blanket, so dickporter can cover his "boy" up with it.
They're not. Sal is an American, with a birth certificate to prove it.
You sure he's not Italian?
Someone said Obama's birth place/certificate are "academic" at this point…
I'm inclined to agree…
We need to stop this guy from the mess he's causing and worry about the
other items later..
Plus he (Obama) seems to relish the controversy…Making Conservatives look deranged….
So instead of honoring SSG Giunta's bravery, the WH sees this Medal of Honor as a throwaway to make nice-nice with the military. Unlike Obama's Nobel Prize, SSG Giunta deserves his Medal.
God bless SSG Giunta and the US military and keep them safe. Let them fight!
SSG Giunt good job soldier
Thank You for keeping me and mine safe.
I hope to one day welcome you and all of your fellows home in victory over those who would destroy US.
No words. Standing at attention and saluting this man – period. Holding salute for SSgt. Giunta.
H.P.D.;
Let's say that indeed that Obama is "natural born" and that it's academic – I still think Obama is WORLDS AWAY from the kind of American this SSgt is, when compared to Obama.
The press and people KILLED Bush Sr. when he had never seen a scanner at a gorcery store before – the things America that would baffle this Mulatto clown are most likely mariad – he seem like he floated in from Mars.
Obama seems so …foreign – so "out-of-sorts" when confronted with all things "American". That baseball throw while weaing Mom jeans will haunt me forever (ehhh – horrible!). My little brother threw better as a 7 y.o.
Thank you SSG Giunta!
You are a GREAT AMERICAN.
May God bless you and your family. Your Mom and Dad deserve some praise as well.
Godspeed to SSG Giunta, and here's hoping his nomination doesn't become a political football.
Angels & Saints my friend, angels & saints…
Standing in formation with Jamesb "PRE-sent ARMS" [Salute]
SSG Guinta,
Thank you for acting without hesitation to save your comrade in arms. America needs men of ACTION such as you.
God Bless you sir.
PS – If I am in the room, you will never pay for a drink again for the rest of your life…

Why was my post deleted? All I said was: To paraphrase James Mitchener from his novel "The Bridges of Toko-Ri," where do we find such men? They come from quiet towns or large, inhospitable, cities and they fight our wars for us. They are usually sent to places no sane human being would want to live in, yet they fight (and some die) to protect this great nation from our enemies, people who would think nothing of killing us all. We owe them more than anyone can say, and certainly nobody on the liberal left would admit. They have battled in places with strange names, like Iwo Jima, Khe Sanh, Hue, Tarawa, Guadalcanal, the Chosin Reservoir, and the Pusan Perimeter, Fallujah, to name but a few. Thank you never seems to be enough, but know that, from at least one citizen, you have his undying appreciation and respect.
Hooah SSG Salvatore Giunta! Thank you for your service to our country and her people.
Wait, I thought this administration handed out medals only to those who refrained from fighting or defending themselves.
What an amazing young man. May the Lord bless him and his comrades as they go into danger each day.
It boggles my mind (as so many things do).
I can't think of these incredible people, these warriors who do what I cannot, without at least a few tears escaping these tired old eyes.
It's not right that my appreciation must be tempered with anything at all, much less suspicion of their civilian command, the holders of the reins of power in this beautiful country. How mundane is Obama? He is so persistently ordinary that he is our top executive official, and uses his high office to defraud us, and, worse yet, to divide us.
Thank you hero, these are the types of people that the last administration let down. By not communicating and giving the american people the heros that we love to honor, all we saw was the negitive soldiers doing bad things. God bless the USA and save its brave soldiers.
I have had the honor of shaking the hand and having a great conversation with a Medal of Honor recipient. He never mentioned the Medal but talked of his faith in God, how fortunate he was to have lived in this great country, and being able to serve. One of the proudest times of my life.
Desmond T Doss – R I P
Thank you to another great American SSG Giunta.
If we had politicians with half as much courage as our military there would be no wars more than a week old.
Immigrants that worked for their own benefit AND the benefit of the nation. THANK YOU!

Lift one to you this weekend!
Jb
Yep…
Hard to see Obama as the kind of "American" we think of when we think of "an American".
You know, the kind that has worked with his hands, done a myriad of different jobs, gone to regular schools,(not madrasas) played baseball and football, and most of all appreciates the military volunteers who make the sacrifaces, sometimess the ultimate one, that keep this country safe….
And potentially, in the future, a great nation again…
As Obama presides over our palpitable downward spiral, the one everyone feels, except the politicially tone deaf tin horn politicians in Washington…

If you get a chance, read "SEAL Of Honor" (by Gary Williams)…
A bio of a Navy SEAL, Mike Murphy, who sacrificed himself so his men might live …
Eventhough one one survived, his bravery will make you shake your head proudly and more then one tear will fall….
Thank you, sir, for your heroism, and God bless you and the rest of our military!
I'll try my best, HPD. Thanks much for the recommendation!
What an amazing act of courage and bravery. Thank you, SSG Giunta. And thank you to all men and women brave enough to don a uniform of the United States military.

How nice of you to take time from jacking off in your mama's basement just to come on here and leave stupid remarks.
Congrats Sal! So proud to know a man like you! Can't wait to see you at the ceremony!
Sal is a good friend of mine and a soldier that I served with in the same platoon in the Korengal. I have researched this plenty as I am very interested in the outcome and besides a blog saying he will be awarded it there is no concrete evidence of approval and for that matter I just asked him and (not uncommon that everyone else knows before you in the Army) he hasn't heard anything… so don't get too bent out of shape that the upper ups who have no concept of soldiers shoot it down. Sal is very uncommon to americans in general and is even uncommon in the service in that he is not a glory hog, honestly doesn't want a medal for doing the only thing he could do, and never wanted anything more than to be fighting shoulder to shoulder with his brothers.
But, i honestly agree with him that what he did was what any one of us who were there fighting that day would have done if the circumstances allowed. We all loved, admired and looked up to josh and would have instantly without hesitation braved the fires of hell to save him. Specialist Hugo Mendoza died trying to do precisely that. Yes Sal is a super soldier that absolutely deserves the Blue Max but the real heroes that horrific day were SPC Hugo Mendoza and one of my best friends in the whole world SGT Joshua Brennan who gave everything in the hopes of helping those oppresed people in that horible Valley of death. I hope you get it Sal that after party in DC will be LEGENDARY!

Lots of Italians came to the United States over the years in a legal fashion. This one is from Iowa, you can't get any closer to the Heart of America than Iowa, Drive along I-80 thew that State, Endless Corn Fields. SSG Sal Giunta, this is long over due, the Acton took place in October of 2007 its almost three years. There is the other thing now, You are the youngest member of a very small group of living Americans, And Col Gordon R. Roberts will have some company for a while. Well done!!
