New Poll: American Jews Are Moving Away From Obama
by Jeff DunetzAmerican Jews, 78% of whom voted to make Barack Obama president are continuing to move away from Obama and his policies. According to a survey conducted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) , 51% of Jews approve of the way Obama is doing his job. While that number may seem high keep in mind that the AJC poll conducted in March 2010, showed the president with a 58% approval.
As expected, there is an uncomfortableness with Obama based on his Middle East Policies (although they still support his efforts), but surprisingly, many of the President’s economics policies are not popular with the Jewish community.
Approve of the way Obama is handling:
- The Economy 45% approve (51% disapprove)
- Health Care 51% approve (46% disapprove)
- Homeland Security 62% approve (33% disapprove)
- Gulf oil spill 53% approve (42% disapprove)
- The Iran nuclear issue 43% approve (46% disapprove)
Also surprising is the fact that American Jews support the controversial Arizona law to curb illegal immigration:
- A new law in Arizona gives police the power to ask people they’ve stopped to verify their residency status. Supporters say this will help crack down on illegal immigration. Opponents say it could violate civil rights and lead to racial profiling. On balance, do you support or oppose this law? Support 52% Oppose 46%
- Do you approve or disapprove of the Obama Administration’s handling of U.S. -Israel relations? The last poll conducted in March reported a 55% approval, that number today has slipped to 49%. During that same period support of the way Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is handling US-Israel relations has grown from 57% to 62%.
- Not that Jews are ready to leap into the laps of the GOP, when asked if they think the country would be better off if the Republicans controlled Congress, or if the Democrats controlled Congress? Republican 33%, Democrat 57%
The Most Important Issues to the Jewish Community are the same as those of the general population the economy.
Health care comes up a bit higher than the general population which reflects the strong Democratic Party affiliation of Jews. Thinking ahead to the November 2010 congressional elections, how important will each of the following issues be to your vote?: Very important, somewhat important, or not important (only very important % are shown below).
Iran is a major issue in the Jewish community given the Iranian President’s anti-Semitic and threat of genocide.
- There is a general agreement that the combination of diplomacy and sanctions can stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons? 72% said there was little or no chance of it succeeding.
- 59% of respondents answered that they would support the United States taking military action against Iran to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons? 70% said they would support Israel taking military action.
- There also doesn’t seem much confidence in the President’s handling of Iraq and Iran. 64 percent say the U.S. is losing the war in Afghanistan, while 25 percent disagree, and 47 percent say it is losing the war in Iraq, while 41 percent disagree.
This poll is interesting mostly because of the trends and the possible snapshot of the Jewish pulse. This AJC survey was conducted by Synovate, 800 respondents were interviewed by telephone between August 31 and October 5, 2010. This is the political breakdown of the respondents, Republican 17%, Democrats 48%, Independents 34% and Not sure 1% . It would be interesting to see those numbers confirmed by a second source.
Putting it all together, we see that American Jews are growing more uncomfortable every day with President Obama and his policies. He was elected to fix the economy and Jewish Americans feel that he is not doing a good job. They also disapprove of two of his major foreign policy initiatives, Iranian Nukes and the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unless the President’s policies meet with some success (and there is still lots of time for that to happen), Barack Obama may be the first Democrat since Jimmy Carter’s re-election bid not to gain a majority of the Jewish vote.

I am pleasantly surprised by the poll result, regarding the Arizona law which allows Arizona cops to enforce the law. There is still a high-level of "immigrant-consciousness" (sounds leftish I know, but I can't think of a better way to put it) among the American Jewish community. I am glad to see the majority's minds are not distracted by this, such that they ignore the illegality of the immigrants (I'm becoming more inclined to use the word invaders) in question.

What has amazed me over many years is the Jewish support for the liberals anyway. They have been anti-Israel for many years, but NoBama flaunts his bias so the Jewish now see whats been in plain sight for a long time.

I have been amazed that the Jewish people of this country have given obama any support. From the beginning he has been anti-Israel. The extreme liberalism of the Jewish populace of this country have given obama cover to do much of what he has done to Israel. If I were an Israeli I would see American Jews as traitors of the Jewish faith.
I never understood why Jews backed liberal-progressives; the very people who would have absolutely no problem whatsoever with exterminating them. There must be something intrinsically broken in the Jewish culture. They turned a blind eye to every major dictator that has victimized them in the last 2,500 years. They have always tried to cooperate with these dictatorial regimes and they have always been made to suffer as a result.
Yet they keep on doing it. For people who are supposed to be more educated than the norm, they sure are stupid on that score. Amazing…

Here is one counter-example to your assertion. I think your, and several other posters, perspective is somewhat distorted by the left-liberal bias of American Jewry. Israeli Jews span the whole gambit of the political spectrum, but with the exception of the Neturei Karta, Jews are not suicidal.
For the life of me I do not understand why the Jews vote for Dimocraps. The Republicans have always supported Israel but the Dimocraps just dumpo on them. If they value their homeland so damn much they should be staying away from the Dims. If they value their wealth, they should avoid the Dims and their extensive spending/taxing programs. But they do not.

No one really has a solid, conclusive answer to that question, but I'm in the Michael Medved camp. He argues that American Jews have an at-odds relationship with the Christian majority, and see the Republican party as a further empower-er of that majority.
As a child, I myself have been the target of aggressive attempts at conversion, and I can see where this life experience can lead to a siege mentality. There is also identification with other minority groups, blacks in particular, which leads to an "all sizzle and no steak" mental equivalence of the dims with their welfare. (This ground has, of course, be well-covered.)

I am the only conservative in my family. Except for my father, all the others have completely drunk the Kool-Aid. I have been sending story after story, data after data desperately trying to convince my father that the Bamster is absolutely NO friend of the Jews. I think I actually may be getting through to him. The other day, he sent me an email where he actually wrote, "Obama and his cronies."

Here's a newsflash for people who want to be "tolerant": tolerance does not mean automatically taking a position that is contrary to the interests of your country.
Obama is anti-Israel, but i do not believe he is anti-Semitic. They are different but related. Anti-Semites hold the view that Jewish people are racially inferior and inherently evil. It's what the Nazis and a good part of the radical Muslim world believes (and a few crackpots here like Smedly).
Obama views Israel as an oppressive nation and the Palestinians as the oppressed people This is the common view among academia and media elites so it's no surprise that Obama holds these views.
Those who are anti-Israel are usually anti-America as well and Obama certainly fits the bill here. He views America as the historical oppressor against undeveloped nations. This underlies his support of global warming (i.e. global wealth redistribution).

It appears you have misinterpreted by words. The issue I describe is not necessarily one one disagreement of religious dogma, but a general distrust of religiosity, in general, with a particular fear of the majority religion.
My experience resemble yours. Most of my family is Reform, and among most of these family members, dim support is the norm.

Many of the Leftist (Reformed) ones are essentially Atheists, so they matter little to the black-suited braided ones (Conservative variety)..
Leftism has distorted many faiths. Some Jews buy into the myth of social justice, but the most heated arguments I've had on that very topic have been with a Catholic. However, I don't make generalizations WRT Catholics based upon this experience. I would caution people against making similar generalization about Jews. It's especially easy, yet unproductive, to compartmentalize Jews on the political spectrum, due to the existence of Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Judaism. It's unproductive because such generalizations are often precursors to prejudice, and expression of the prejudice is only going to make it self-fulfilling. As a Jew, I am more put-off by these well-meaning but ill-informed generalizations made about Jewish political sentiments, then by the blatant anti-Semites. For goodness sake, this report is documenting the rightward shift of American Jewry, and yet there are so many posters clucking their tongues about how lefty American Jews are.

Since the policies of the Democrats and the policies of the KKK have had the same effect (the utter ruin of blacks), I'd say it's the exact opposite – this poll indicates that American Jews are moving away from the KKK.
The concept of welfare could have been invented by the KKK – it's had the effect of destroying vast numbers of black families (white families too – but welfare is pushed mainly to blacks), and left them without the pride of being self-reliant adults.

This is not an exclusively Jewish phenomenon, as the "theocracy" rhetoric coming from some quarters of the irreligious, if not anti-religious, left demonstrates.
But presuming to tell Jews what their faith is, and what their faith is not, is a surefire way to alienate them, and I assume that your goal is to convince them to vote for conservative candidates. Consequently, may I close by saying such rhetoric is not particularly productive.

Though Christians feel a deep kindred spirit with the Jewish faith, I don't believe that feeling is reciprocated. Faithful Jews are very distrustful of faithful Christians (though I have no proof of this generally, only anecdotal evidence).

I have to agree it is a mystery why the Jews lean left. Perhaps wealth guilt or white guilt – it has to have something to do with guilt.
What is clear though, there are not a lot of Jews flying into buildings or strapping on bomb vests. We should be clear about who our friends are.

I wouldn't expect that to be an issue with the conservative Jew. But, as this article mentions, Jews in the majority are Democrats and the issue brought up in the comments was – why? My comment reflects the reasoning given to me by the Jews I know. I am not putting anyone down. I believe that this is a longstanding miscommunication problem that can be changed and I try to do that in every instance provided to me.
I'm hoping they start voting like Cubans (i.e. the ones in the US, the only ones who have a vote)!

Seems like we could have applied this to the Iran situation. We should have helped them build a nuclear power plant. Would have helped our own decaying skill-set at the same time. Would have helped create bridges. But, you see, that evil cabal in Israel doesn't want that. Our own interests were sacrificed, once again, for the tiny cult that has hijacked this country.

I'm a conservative Jew myself. I grew up in the '70's in New york City. I went to school w/ Blacks and Hispanics and had to fight every day to defend myself from anti-semites. As a result I grew up strong, tough and proud! And there are MANY like me. Jews are a lot of things; Stubborn and proud to say the least. But victims we are NOT! I know you're talking about American liberal Jews, but that's the problem. We are not all liberal and we are not a monolith. EVen the most liberal Jews in many cases are staunch defenders of Israel.
