Obama Should Apologize to Hoekstra
by Jed BabbinAt Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on the side of a new battery manufacturing plant being built in Holland, Michigan President Obama proved yet again that his smashmouth politics knows no limits.
Using $150 million of Obama’s “stimulus” bill money, Compact Power – a South Korean company – is building the plant in Holland and will eventually create 300 jobs there. The math indicates that’s about $500,000 a job.
The good folks of Holland wanted to celebrate the choice of their town by Compact Power, a South Korean company. They invited two political celebrities: President Obama and Republican Cong. Pete Hoekstra, who is running for Michigan governor this year. The town of Holland is in Hoekstra’s district (in fact, it’s his home town.)
Acknowledging Hoekstra – who was sitting within arm’s reach of the president – Obama first took a cut at him: “There are some folks who want to go back, who think that we should return to the policies that helped to lead to this recession,” he said. “Some of them made the political calculation that it’s better to obstruct than to lend a hand. They’ve said no to tax cuts; they’ve said no to small-business loans; they’ve said no to clean-energy projects.”
And then Obama’s backswing with the slash” “Now, that doesn’t stop them from being at ribbon cuttings, but that’s okay, you know.”
So, with the elegance he demonstrated in the 2008 campaign incidents when he flipped off Hillary Clinton (and, later, John McCain) Obama was calling Hoekstra a hypocrite and choosing to do so on in a time and place when Hoekstra couldn’t respond.
We can refuse to be shocked when Obama proves redundantly that he is a graceless boor. But we can also, and must, demand that he apologize when he does.
Political cheap shots, like the one Obama took at Hoekstra, are entirely inappropriate on neutral ground such as the battery plant opening. Hoekstra is a very solid conservative running in a state which is a model of liberal misgovernment. Though he gets more press attention in his position as ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, Hoekstra has been a consistent opponent of Obama’s spending spree.
If Obama wanted to go back to Holland, Michigan to debate Hoekstra, I’m sure the congressman would oblige. But Obama can’t be excused for the cheap shot. He should apologize to Hoekstra. Maybe invite him over to the White House for a beer.

I hope the good people of Holland, Michigan remember in November, what Obama did to their Congressman in front of them! A cheap shot from a little, cheap person…This is the progressive way…kick someone, when they have no way to kick back!

So Hoekstra shouldn't hold his breath for an apology on this issue.

At first I was put off by your impassioned response (probably the language – it's just something I don't use and I deplore hearing it) but the more I think about it, the more I agree. Hoekstra should have stood and walked out. I wouldn't have said anything, just walked. And, I'd be willing to bet there might have been some who would have walked with him.

Some people are born with a dignified classy outlook, some acquire it, and others, even if elected president can never achieve it because they are so filled with hate. Obama is the latter, and sadly we are stuck with him for awhile.

I'm sure Holland will, a college town (Christian college, Concordia) not far from
Grand Rapids. Take heart though, Obama is making it clear to all just who he is, as long as we can outlast him until he completely exposes himself, and with a ton of work to restore America, we will be fine.

What's another sucker punch? We continue to allow President Obama to denigrate our country with his mouth and his policies (sadly, his mouth is the lesser of the evils). Someone previously said that his grandmother should have taught him some manners. She probably did before he moved to Chicago. Look at who he surrounds himself with. His daughters appear to be cute girls but I can only wonder what hatred for freedom has been shoved down their throats.
During the campaign, he appeared to be eloquent. We now realize that he's just a good reader. He cannot think on his feet (except a sentence that begins with "I inherited a mess from the previous administration"). Personally, I'm tired of hearing that. As a teacher, I see too many students who mess up and want to blame the rest of the world for their shortcomings. Let me say to President Obama as I say to my students "Man up, accept responsibility for your own shortcomings, and do what you can to overcome those shortcomings."

Hoekstra said in an interview afterward, "I am not here to disrespect the office of the President." and then he continued, "This is my district and I was invited to this ribbon cutting event."
What should he have done? I think he did the right thing at the time.

Tightening up the voting polls and write-ins will help. They perpetuated a lot of voter fraud last election. If a Repub would pass Legislation to require Valid I.D. at voting booths we could eliminate a huge portion of their votes!

I don't know the answer to all of your concerns, but I do know that windmills, solar, & electric cars, etc.are good, BUT it will take time before America can become solely reliant on them.
In the meantime we need to use the most abundant, efficient source of Energy that we have so much of in America, Oil. So- Drill baby Drill ! so that we're not dependant upon Foreign Countries that hate U.S!
