by J.C. ArenasSeveral weeks after the Senate rejected Barack Obama’s plan to create a bipartisan congressional panel charged with decreasing the deficit, the president will use his executive authority to create the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.
The less-powerful bipartisan commission, chaired by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, will be tasked with formulating a plan to decrease the federal budget deficit to 3% of GDP by 2015.
Yawn.
With the signing of this executive order, Obama will add fiscal responsibility to his growing library of political theater. Thus far, his other featured films have starred earmarks, lobbyists, Sonia Sotomayor, bipartisanship, etc. Unsurprisingly, they all share a common theme: disingenuousness. You’re welcome to grab some popcorn and take a seat, but as you watch the production of fiscal responsibility featuring Obama the deficit hawk, keep in mind you’re only being entertained.
In his first year in office, the president spent a record-breaking $3.52 trillion. At the end of the year, he used Christmas Eve to sneakily sign an executive order that provides an unlimited, perpetual bailout to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
At the beginning of this month, he released a $3.8 trillion budget proposal that will increase the deficit to a record-breaking $1.56 trillion, and just last week he signed a bill that increases the federal debt limit from $12.394 trillion to $14.294 trillion.
The president’s track record speaks for itself. He’s not a deficit hawk; he’s a big government ideologue. Unfortunately, big government costs big money, and the formation of Obama’s America will cost unprecedented amounts of money–to use the administration’s favorite word.
So what’s going on here?
As usual, Barack Obama believes he’s the smartest guy in the room, and he can trick the American people because they only pay attention to his words, not his actions.
That’s why he makes a pledge of no lobbyists, but allows waivers to sneak them in the back door. That’s why he makes a pledge of no earmarks, but signs unread legislation filled with thousands of them into law. That’s why he talks about bipartisanship, but behind closed doors proclaims to the GOP, he won, they lost, and they can either go along or get out of the way. And that’s why he creates a commission designed to create the appearance of a president who wants to get the nation’s financial house of cards in order even while he plots to spend it into oblivion.
Films often capture our imaginations, allowing us to believe in the unbelievable. Obama wants us to believe the unbelievable in him, but according to a recent CNN poll, 52% of the participants don’t believe he should be re-elected.
Translation?
The American people don’t believe he’s doing a great job directing, and they’re going to be the ones to say “cut!”

While I have always respected Alan Simpson, I can't say the same about Erskine Bowles. It is simply an attempt at window dressing. Mr. Simpson should enjoy his tetirement and not allow himself to be used as a tool by Obama, in the same way that Bush is being used as a tool, a prop.

Why have Glen Beck and Bill O'Reilly both recently tried to warn against the "fringe lunatics" in the Tea Party movement? Why have they both spoken very derisively about "birthers" completely ignoring the fact that a very large percentage of the American People have serious questions about Obama's past and his eligibility to be POTUS? Political cover for tax increases- which was the plan all along. Obama's base political conviction is governmental absorption of the private sector.
Step 1: spend up to potentially catastrophic debt levels.
Step 2: "solve" the debt crisis by raising taxes.
This sorry product of affirmative action, who has had smoke blown up his ass for 40-years, needs a commission to tell him that if you spend much more than you take-in, then you run deficits. Could you imagine if a white guy did anything that stupid? And now that he's being judged like a white guy (he ran as a black guy), he's proving not to be up to the job. In the real world, you have to do more than just show-up to earn an A–results matter.

I understand that the Secret Service, has a full length mirror at all times. Whenever Barry feels blue, they whip out the mirror, and he can admire himself for a while. Time and time again, the recurring theme with this bunch is the absolute belief that the American People are stupid. How this man can get in front of the cameras day in day out and tell one huge lie after another is his true "gift". The American People thirst for honesty and leadership, two qualities sorely lacking in Washington these days.
This process seems to come out of a script from Hollywood. I am sure Obama has received a few ideas from Mr.Moore in Hollywood. He is acting like an alcoholic on a twelve step program. The first step is to admit you have a problem, but is blaming everybody else without taking responsibility for this self destructive path. There is no acceptance or responsibility about the direction of this country where his party is taking this country.

If Obama and helicopter Ben did not drop trillions of dollars into the economy in the last year the current recession would currently be the Great Depression 2. Even with trillions dumped into the economy the unemployment rate is %10 without counting discouraged workers and a lot of part time work! If the trillions were not injected into the economy to replace the money not being lent out by banks, even though they have gained access to money far above the 2008 bailout, the unemployment rate could easily be double what it is now.
In a way I do agree with most posters that it would be better if the entire economy was allowed to collapse including the banks that were bailed out in 2008 and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. At least if economic collapse and the resulting detirioration of living standards had happened people would be shocked out of their complacency and apathy which is solely due to having a high standard of living courtesy of the chinese. Then at least people might start questioning some of their assumptions, especially the assumptions based on nothing other than a naive appeal to authority totally absent of any critical thought, so that some real innovative change that would increase prosperity for all could be formulated and attempted.
I always turn the channel whenever his face comes on, saves on my dental bills.
This way when we all get our taxes raised it will not be "THE CHOSEN ONE" who did it. Always watch the other hand! or as Mr. Rippley said "THERE IS ANOTHER SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE" No incumbents in 2010, make the term "Professional Politician" a thing of the past.
I have the solution to the help the debt problem and it will not require a committee or cost any money to implement. It is very simple.
Every liberal in this country who has a value over $250,000 a year must give all of their monies to the federal government. That is they have to cash in all their stocks and bonds, sell their homes and close out their back accounts. All their future earnings will go straight to the government. They can all then move into government housing, go on medicare and draw food stamps. Just think of the money to be made (John Travolta, Barbra Striesand, Bill Gates, George Soros, William Benette, Sean Penn, etc) the list is endless. This would generate billions in revenue every single year. Problem solved.

You want to cut the deficit, just cut spending. This is all NEW spending, not something created by other administration. I think he is overwhelmed by the responsibility and the only thing he does know how to do is give speeches and lie. He's trained for that all his life.
Nice try but your assumption about what our economy would now look like if we didn't have the Stimulus bill or the TARP bailout is no more than that. You may think you know but you don't and none of us does either. As for the TARP money, much of it has already been paid back and much of the money that hasn't been paid back went straight into the big wall st firms and foreign banks by way of AIG.
The stimulus bill was nothing more than a pork riddled Keynesian experiment that will undoubtedly have some impact simply by virtue of its sheer magnitude. As for it's effectiveness, that's a different story. The job creation promises have proven to be much less robust than what was advertised. That's mostly because the federal government does not create jobs any where nearly as efficiently as the private sector does. Borrowing $B900 from the Chinese is bound to create some jobs, but look at the collateral damage in our mounting debt.

What do you think executive orders are for? They allow a president to govern when the legislature is unwilling or unable to legislate. He did ask the congress for this commission and they refused. That didn't mean it can't be done. If they want to prohibit the commission they will have to come up with some specific legislation and a 2/3 majority to over ride a presidential veto.
Give the Republicans some credit for sticking together and blocking the president's agenda.

You have misread the post. He doesn't want to cut spending to 3% of GDP, just cut deficit spending to 3% of GDP. Deficit spending is currently about 9% of GDP.

The reason Bowles is on the committee is because he worked out the details of the 1997 Budget Deficit Reduction Act between the legislature and President Clinton. It led to three budget surpluses.

As for your insinuation that it was the Republican congress who was responsible for balancing the budget in the late 90s, well that just doesn't wash. The same Republicans were also in charge of the congress while Bush was the president from 2001-2007 and they couldn't get to a balanced budget with him. So it must have been Clinton…

the point that "snoooooozn" made is not a right vs left one. Let us assume that the committee put politics aside and actually look at the issue and solutions. When the real solutions are:
1)CUT SPENDING
or
2)RAISE TAXES
Our President can "with a straight teleprompter" blatantly break another campaign pledge, and somehow justify it to himself.
