Once Again, James O’Keefe Strips Away the MSM’s Mask of Neutrality, Revealing the Bias Below
by Hannah GilesThis past week marked one of the strangest periods of my life. And yes, the arrest of my friend and colleague James O’Keefe had a lot to do with it. James found himself, once again, in the middle of a raging media battle all because he wanted to shine a little light on public corruption. Let me tell you something, he certainly rang in the New Year with this one. As James said:
My goal is to expose corruption and lack of concern for citizens by government and other institutions…
Target: Mary Landrieu. Why: she’s been taking legal “bribes” in the form of the “Louisiana Purchase” in exchange for her vote on Sen. Harry Reid’s healthcare bill, and ignoring phone calls from her outraged constituents. Bold, dirty, rude politics at its finest.
Putting his head down, and plowing ahead, James was off to New Orleans working on a new project. A project that would hopefully raise questions, demand answers, and spur people to action.
The complication: James and three of his colleagues were arrested in the process. (Although now the U.S. Attorney in charge of the case has recused himself, a sure sign that the case is rapidly crumbling.)
For 48 hours, rampant rumors of phone taps, possible felonies, rash behavior and the phrase “Watergate Jr.” spread like wildfire. No one knew the reality of the situation. Even I was very concerned by the initial reports. I had no inkling of this project and once again found myself a victim of the MSM’s filthy, desperate and fact-free drive-by reporting. As Galileo famously said:
All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.
The truth eventually began trickling out and it appears Mary Landrieu’s office vastly exaggerated the situation, and yet the MSM ran with it. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC could barely contain her glee:
Note to everyone: throwing out words like “wiretapping” in regards to a federal phone system is the equivalent to screaming “bomb” on an airplane….Don’t say it unless you mean it. Or else, all the attention will zero in on you and things will quickly get complicated.
In fact, Landrieu’s overreaction to O’Keefe’s video project ought make the public wonder what the heck is actually going on in the office that her constituents are permitting her to occupy for at least a little while longer. But instead we had ACORN’s CEO, Bertha Lewis, using the incident as an opportunity to, once again, excuse her employees’s behavior in our “ACORN Housing helps underage sex slave” videos. We saw inappropriate and vicious attacks from the MSM, and watched some members of a movement turn its back on a man they considered a hero less than a week ago.
What I’ve learned is this: the MSM is the primary force of the Democratic Party. If the MSM is lying to you, guess who else is? Someone has to feed them stories. Time and time again the MSM has been caught in a self-created web of lies, and the vast majority of these reports do one thing, and that is mask the true, ugly face of liberalism.
Listen, the MSM is officially beyond biased and slanted reporting. Right now, it is on the “bold dishonesty” level. They are essentially pelting the public with hot, stinky manure, and it is completely insulting.
Fortunately, there are ways around the MSM’s nonsense. Andrew Breitbart has made the new media trendy, and after the ACORN videos everyone and their conservative dog was on the new-media campaign bandwagon. “Yay, yay we are back to save the day. Glory and victory all the way!” But then, the second things got a little spicy, POOF, they’re gone.
For instance, Michelle Malkin, a once avid supporter/defender of James and all his work, called for an example to be made out of him, and instructing other young journalists to not follow in his footsteps. Again, this was before she knew his side of the story.
The bottom line is, conservative elites are afraid of the MSM. They are constantly two-steppin’ to stay in their good graces while secretly cursing them beneath their breath. It is no wonder they’ve had their rear ends handed to them so badly in past elections. I’m telling you, if conservatives don’t put on their game faces and strap on their big-boy boots, our nation’s demise is imminent.

Why do I think the MSM and the Liberals were so perversely obsessed with the possibility of James being a wannabe “Watergate Jr.?” They lie, because despite all their money and power, they are scared. Not of the Republicans or Conservative movement, but of citizen journalists who hold truth in the highest regard. These people are at large, and on the rise. Which means some major power players have a lot to be afraid of.

Good article. You and James have certainly done a great service to this Country, by shaking up the entrenched "Powers that Be" and challenging the status quo. Thank you for your efforts.
I'd like to comment further, but for fear of having my post deleted by someone at biggovernment, I'll stop.
The fringe media should have waited until they actually had facts or had actually seen the charges in a press release from the feds. Yes they would be somewhat obligated to cover a "arrest" story but with the caveat of we do not have all the facts and will keep you informed of information as it is released….end of story…but as usual anything for the dim controlled media to push a point and actually find out if her office really was ignoring her constituents.
Looks like the MSM stepped in their own big smelly one again. They haven't heard the old adage, "don't crap on your own doorstep".
I will enjoy how this unwinds. Looks like James is owed an apology and someone's head down at the LA US Attorney's office for depriving him of his constitutional rights.

I still don't know if what James did was the brightest thing (especially considering the limited payoff even if he proved his point), but a lot of us never bought the hysterical rantings of the MSM and blogger trolls.

I can sum it up with another quote. This one from Ben Stien in his American Spectator article, entitled "Free James O'Keefe":
"The behavior of the feds here is not just worrisome. It is something beyond that. But, Mr. Holder, here is a line from the civil rights struggle I worked in before you were born: We are not afraid. And we're not going away."
That should be our mantra: "WE ARE NOT AFRAID. AND WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY."

As tragic as it is, there are now two Americas. Us and Them and never the two shall meet. Personally, I'm not interested in convincing anyone any more, you either get it or you don't. With Obama in office, exacerbating things daily, I don't see this ending happily. Rachel comes off as a partisan hack here and MSNBC's ratings reflect the publics revulsion for this type of "reporting" I have the gut feeling that Andrew and gang are setting these dunces up for a major bitch slap.

If the MSM was truly unbiased, Olberman, Chris Matthews, Rachel MadCow, and all of the others that are responsible for the demise of the MSM as it was once known, would have been fired, without severance pay, last year.
Conan got screwed by NBC ( ObamaTV) Olberman and others of his ilk are screwing NBC by collecting a paycheck while orchestrating the DEMISE of their employers. MSM employees are worse than the Bankers receiving Bonuses while their companies go TU. Oh wait ObamaControl saved them.
Hannity kept asking James if he or any of his friends had devices that could be used to bug phones in their posession. No matter how mnay times James answered the Q, Hannity just asked it again. Shawn reminded me of Charles Gibson asking Sarah Palin about her support ( she did not support it, it was NEVER built) for the "Bridge to Nowhere". Then he asked again, and again, & again.
Michelle Malkin was a Big dissapointment. She of all people should know better. I sometimes feel that even Fox hosts are jealous of Sara Palin, & Hannah & James. Sometimes a BIG EGO is all that stands in the way of the Truth being Told.

I am ashamed of Michelle Malkin's words. I was just starting to read her site, amazing how quickly she was willing to slap him down. In reality who is worse? Mary Landrieu who accepts a 300K million bribe to vote for something 60% of the nation does not want or James O'Keefe entering, not breaking and entering, entering into a Publicly funded building looking for reasons why the phones were jammed. I prayed for this boy when I first heard he was arrested, seems many were just ready to throw him to the wolves. What people forget is that a FEDERAL building is A PUBLIC BUILDING. Hello? Mary Landrieu doesn't own that building, she doesn't even own the chair she sits in (unless she personally bought and didn't expense it) WE THE PEOPLE own that building, that chair, that freakin phone system. If James was able to document, through his investigation, that Senator Landrieu's phones were disabled from receiving calls from her constituents, then I think the Senator has a lot of explaining to do.
Did the Senator, or anyone in her staff, authorize the phones to be disabled from receiving calls? If that occured, someone, and not James, should be charged under 18 U.S.C. 1362.

The travesty of this whole situation is that the MSM reporting of the "rumors" is so widespread that the sheer pervasiveness of it gives them cover. The only people who would know that O'Keefe's case didn't involve actual wiretapping are those familiar with the "new media" or Retracto. To pick out the error for correction in individual publications is like plucking sand from the ocean. There can never be a rollback of the "wiretapping" smear. It was everywhere, they were all saying it, how can it not be true?
There are those in the MSM who are bottom dwellers who muddied the water. Now, that the dirt is settling, we’ll see right to the bottom, and it’s not going to look too pretty for them, let alone Mary Landrieu.

James O’Keefe is proof that one man can make a difference. He has committed himself to exposing corruption wherever he may find it, even at his own peril. All self respecting media should stand and salute this man for his bravery in journalism, and seek to follow his example. There are only two ways to keep our country free and the first is something not many want to think about. The second is by dragging vampireous blood sucking corruption from it's back room hiding spot out into the sunlight where it can reduced to ashes by the truth seeking public.
On a further thought: I think we should have a bill that requires all phone calls, e-mails and other correspondence to and from public officials to be posted to the internet in real time for all to see and hear. They are after all, conducting the peoples business. The technology is readily available and relatively inexpensive.
I'm not liking the potential catfight brewing between Hannah and Michelle Malkin…

I have noticed of late, that many of the regular posters and contributors here, are gone. There are alot of new ones showing up, with generic names, but they aren't the regulars. I sure hope this hasn't run its course and become passe'.
I believed from the beginnin that this was a good thing, a good idea. I still do. Time will tell.

I have every right to walk into my representatives office and ask if the phones work.
If the phones don't work, I can volunteer to fix them.

Even CNN on Sunday morning, one of those weekly news programs. The host read only part of James statement which I found to be very troubling especially when his statement wasn't that long. He was cherry picking the statement.

Excellent point! I, too, was tired of seeing the MSM describe what James did as "breaking and entering." He went to a PUBLIC OFFICIAL'S public office, during business hours and spoke with her staff. The only thing he did that was a little iffy is recording his visit. I, too, am anxious to see the video, because it didn't sound to me as though his friends did anything illegal either. Not sure about the legality of posing as telephone repairmen. (God knows, half the time I think the AT&T guys are just posing…)
Because Senator Landrieu's constituents are mostly only interested in how much Federal money she brings back to New Orleans. That said, I know some of her constituents from other parts of the state, and they are anxious for the next election to they can vote her OUT!!!
Point taken, but those are the words that exactly supposed to be partnered with "Journalist" only too many Journalists have completely disregarded them.
People are too quick to jump on the bandwagon. Information is being treated as fact. They’re not the same, and the confuse is all to common.
Malkin lost all of her credability when she decided to go after Ann Coulter years ago. Who cares what she says anymore, she is too concerned with looking like she is on the "respectable side" instead of being on the side of truth.

If the big boys and girls in the conservative party are quick to even think anything less than "Innocent till proven guilty" is appropriate…well then we are screwed. I do hope they read your story and think about what transpired out of their mouths and the potential danger it brings to the American people if they are so quick to judge. It was definitely unsettling what we were being told, but we all knew James would not do something illegal… And something as blatant as wiretapping? Give me a break!
I saw James on Hannity last night and was glad to hear him say he was "rethinking some of his methods of undercover journalism." I think this is imperative in this present climate. We are not living in the America I grew up in and there are enemies out there just waiting to jump on anything they can to make their point. Citizen Journalism is one of the strong weapons we have against this invasion within our government. It could be the very key that keeps us from falling over into the abyss. I think it would behoove anyone considering an undercover investigation to consult an Lawyer that can be trusted to have a legal opinion on the situation, so nothing is overlooked. Youth and passion can blind our judgment at times….heck old age and passion can do the same.
New York Post and National Review Online reported that O'Keefe and crew were attempting to bug the Senator's phone. Are they part of the MSM? Or are you all just ignoring this fact? Most of the media outlets that charaterized this as a "bugging" have since corrected their stories. Have the Post and NRO?
Mary Landrieu will be exposed in due time and will eventually go to jail. One thing is for sure, she will lose her next election. As for O'Keefe, MSNBC will not get their laughs that they want because O'Keefe will be "cut loose".
No it's just that every time we have been choosing sides, nobody was picking them, so they just went home.

— Be judicious about naming criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges.
— Balance a criminal suspect’s fair trial rights with the public’s right to be informed.
Act Independently Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know. Journalists should:
—Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
— Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
— Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
— Disclose unavoidable conflicts.
— Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.
— Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.
— Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.
This is a great idea, but a costly one. We the People seem to have forgotten that everything they have, unless they purchased it with their own money belongs to us to We the People. I want someone to force Mary Landrieu to give an answer why the phones have been jammed. Why hasn't she set up a town hall meeting with all the people calling so they could voice their opinion without the hindrance of a phone system? She is dodging the people because what she did was CRIMINAL. How many people in LA are going to see any of that $300K. In California for every dollar our Babs Boxer (D) brings back it costs us more money to use. What a sham, that money goes to them.

…is out of touch with reality eveb beyond the usual right wing denial–the recusal is a sure sign that he is socially familiar with the son of a colleague, nothing more. A conservative prosecutor steps aside because he fears the case is shaky? I thought conservatives were supposed to have more grit. Shame on you, Hannah, for that slander.

Being from Louisiana, I can tell you, I do not trust Mary Landrieu, I am so glad James O Keefe did what he did and I can't wait to see the tapes. I will admit I was pulled in by the media at first, I should have known there was more to the story, but I held my breath and waited to hear what James had to say, never realizing he was being held in jail while the media had a feild day with this. Thanks so much for this article Hannah, you explained the liberal media to a T. Michele Malkin, I am so dissappointed in, but not only her, Glen Beck too. He talked like he belevied the media and didn't bother to explain that we did not have the whole story. He didn't totally knock James but he didn't come to his defense either, not even a little.

I am from Louisiana too. We have been incredibly frustrated by Mary Landrieu. We received an E-mail "explaining" to us simpletons how fabulous the health care bill is. We are absolutely and totally against this fiasco and power grab. Not everyone in Louisiana believes her lies. Of course, we had heard NOTHING at all from her until James shined the light on her stubborn ignoring of her constituents. Thank you, James. Still praying for you. Have good courage!
