In the Bowels of Baltimore’s ACORN
by Hannah GilesThe Baltimore adventure with ACORN started off as a silly idea, both absurd and incredible by all accounts. But it stuck, and quickly escalated into a full blown operation with scripts, method acting, undercover gear, scandalous outfits, fast minds, good hearts, plenty of humor and healthy homemade blueberry muffins.
When I pitched the “prostitute goes into ACORN seeking housing” idea to James O’Keefe at the beginning of the summer, I had absolutely no idea how he would respond. He came back with, “Would you be willing to portray the prostitute? And if so, when can you do this?”
Needless to say, the project had officially begun.
An idea conceived on an afternoon jog would soon birth material evidence.
Most people come up with ridiculous ideas, things that graze against societal norms. However, not all are capable of action because not all are comfortable with action. Many lack the desire for truth and justice, most don’t even know to want it. But on occasion, the previous join forces. The right people with the appropriate calling unite against a common enemy, then the sky is the limit and hell is the target. There will be no compromises, only adaptation and infiltration.
The socially unacceptable became our mode of visual operation. When visuals match content, the system will fall.
The staff we dealt with in Baltimore had no problem offering their time to James and me, not because we were two white kids undercover looking for a big story, but because of the mess we claimed to be in and wished to create.
We connected with these people on a level they were comfortable with. We came off as troubled, torn, innovative and devoted individuals who couldn’t skirt the system unless the system helped us along our journey.
Our presence screamed, as James puts it, “unique situation.” And so when we sought council in regards to tax evasion, obtaining a house for use as an underage brothel, the avoidance of an abusive pimp, and establishing illegitimate congressional campaign funds, they were ready and unfazed by the direction our conversation took.
James and I saw the ACORN Housing location in Baltimore as a target–the den of a giant corrupt lion. We wanted to get a reaction and gauge the corruption. We came armed with the things necessary to cause a reaction; we came equipped with the things necessary to capture the reaction. We expected to be successful. We weren’t overly confident but we had tested methods at our disposal and were able to calculate the lines along which the staffers would react. We didn’t go in expecting major results; we also didn’t limit what could happen seated behind closed doors. We went in knowing that if we were meant to succeed, we would. It is not as if we went in carefree and lah-dee-dah. But we were confident in our mission.

Highly impressed with your desire to expose the corruption that frustrates the citizens paying taxes for this garbage. The interest of the people at the top of this food chain is power and money. Those two women will be thrown out of the organization because they are just pawns. Bravo on one of the first undercover journalist operations I've seen in years. Today's media are lapdogs that do nothing but report the garbage fed to them. This was terrific!
It's bad enough to have a corrupt organization pretending to help America only for their own gains, but to have taxpayers support this organization is a scandal. Acorn should be shut down.

I wonder if anyone will investigate the whole of acorn, or if it will end with the firing of these two crummy individuals. The two Acorn employees have been 'fired', which is probably a code word for transferred to another division. The story from Acorn is that these reporters were thrown out of two or three other offices before they found this one. Either way, I'd like a response from the reporters. The fellow who covered this for CNN said they have no reason not to believe Acorn's explanation. I can think of a few, but then I'm probably a 'conservative activist' as he labeled the two reporters. Pretty tough when you get caught in the act.

Yes, there was corruption on Wall Street and some Enron folks went to jail. Acorn and it's many subsidiaries however are pretty much directly supported by tax payer dollars. ACORN activism is as responsible as any other single factor for the mortgage crisis which is directly responsible for bank failures and the recession. Let's eliminate the corruption we know about. Because this organization was so directly involved in Obama's election, that alone should disqualify them for federal funding. You cannot support a candidate or party and receive tax payer money. That's an abuse that should be investigated.
I don't know what surprises me the most – the fact that they were stupid enough to fall for your story, or the fact they were so decadent that they never even hesitated to 'help'! I am beginning to see we are facing an enemy so vile, and so morally corrupt, that there is no level to which they'll stoop to accomplish their ends. And just as Glenn Beck predicted, the two were quickly discarded today after the story broke.

Glenn Beck made an astute observation: The real culprits are the leadership and founders of ACORN who are, as Beck pointed out, running a plantation. The dirty little secret is that the "social justice" movement is about CONTROL of the uneducated underclass. By doling out a few favors, "brand loyality" is created. The slaves are indebted to the massa. Same as it ever it was. This is the same game played by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the white racists who run it. So it's now 4:20 a.m., and I check the local tv websites to see what they have to say about thie ACORN ordeal. I know I'm way up in the Twin Cities, but the news must have gotten here by now. I know the FOX affiliate will have it, and the NBC won't, so I didn't check those. I went to the ABC and CBS sites in hopes they might have something to say. Nuttin what so ever. If this was tried at other locations how stupid are the leaders of the organization not to send out a memo to all the offices to watch out for people posing in this manner. Hannah, this has potential to be good work, but now the people have too little information about how you went about the sting operation. Methods matter because it helps us understand, if we are serious about determining widespread corruption or just the matter of entrapping a few dumb people (one can always find dumb individuals to entrap), what the cause is. Is it organizational and procedural flaw, in the nature of the national institution (part of a broad left wing ideology), or just a few bad apples? Right now it seems that you are trying to show that it is the culture of The Left in America that caused these individuals to behave in the way they did. But this 'thesis' is not well developed (you said to Beck that you "just don't like them"). If you are serious about a Pulitzer or, simply, being taken serious by those who see things differently than you do or, god forbid, people with their PhDs in journalism, communication, and so on, you will need to take a moment and really ask yourself in a deep way, "what caused these ACORN workers to do what they did?" And, ask yourself also, what causes those on the right wing end of the spectrum, also, to do immoral and unethical things? For that matter, why does anyone do despicable things like these ACORN workers?
One place you may get started: CNN is reporting that you had also attempted this at at least five other locations. What occurred at those other locations? How did ACORN deal with your unique situation when they saw it as problematic? You should go on CNN and talk to them. It will be difficult but the more people you talk to about this the closer to a powerful answer you'll get.

I agree that more needs to come out if they had actually gone to other ACORN offices and what occurred at those offices. The only one that is saying that they went to other offices is Levenson from ACORN. If they did go to other offices and the other offices "kicked them out on their rear ends" then this is an isolated occurrance. However, if this is the only office they attempted this at, then this opens things up to a whole different perspective. These 2 ACORN workers acted like this was not that unusual of an event — educating shady people on tax evasion techniques. Another problem for ACORN is that Hannah and James were told that if they wanted to attend a home loan meeting then they would have to join ACORN at $120. That, in and of itself, would be enough cause to pull any and all federal funding away from ACORN.

Was laughing at many parts of the ACORN episode but the aspect of child prostitution is the angle that really smoked this story out and forced ACORN to fire these people quickly and change their stance.

Frank, Dodd, Schumer and the likes along with Obama are the responsible parties that forced banks to loan money for housing to speculators and millions of people who should never have been allowed anywhere near a mortgage. They are the parties that allowed Fannie and Freddie to back loans to those people. They are the parties that put us in this mess.

Our president didn't work for acorn. He taught them. The most dangerous thing about a democracy is when a small group of people find out they can take all the money they want simply by voting it to themselves. When 51% of the population isn't paying taxes they don't care what the tax rates are they can just vote themselves more money. Pretty soon one of two things will happen. Either the workers stop working (or just become tax cheats like Tim G., or there will be a bloody revolt and states will dissolve the union.

Fantastic job! The firing of these two women should have been expected and should not stop there. As Glenn Beck has pointed out numerous times on his show, the people of the front lines for groups like ACORN are pawns. They are nothing more than political collateral damage. A question to be asked, did their supervisors or manager know or should have known of the behavior of these two women.
Who trained these women? From where or whom did they receive this information? I mean for as disgusting and off-base as it was, they were clever in how to circumvent the system. Now that could have been just common sense these women were relying on (No, not a page from Glenn Beck's book), years of experience of having practiced what they preached, or it could have been "seminars" and in-house training from management that provided these women with their basic knowledge of how to get people into houses. Now if we can put aside the outrage of the child prostitution script and look at this in the sub-prime debacle, how much of the sub-prime lending what actually orchestrated by ACORN by obviously leading people, whom they knew were not "fit" to own a house, down this path?

I agree with you, jcwl, to the extent that we should all open our eyes to see how this country is changing. However, as much as there are some complacent folks that really don't contribute much either way, you can't ignore the fact that the Howard Dean media machine that evolved into the Obama Presidential Election had to overcome some pretty well entrenched conservative power structures to defeat the McCain/Palin crusade. As the increasingly scary rhetoric by some of our brothers and sisters on the right gains more attention, that netroots liberal/progressive media machine may wake up and make all of the doomsayers and fear-mongers on the right look like silly fanatics, however righteous their cause may be.

I'm with you lacleg — it's hard to be a member of either party nowadays because it seems that there is plenty of corruption at all levels of government, but that is also true of the private sector. The problem with fixing it is that the educational system has been gutted and is no longer capable of producing true leaders. The American people can be very forgiving in some ways. Maybe it's time to hold our government to a higher standard, but that means we have to hold the highest standards for our own and set a good example. This is why a lot of the hateful and distorted speech that pervades so many of the comments on this site is troubling, because to most rational people it comes across as rabid and hysterical. Look at how Obama was elected, how persuasive and smooth his delivery is. Same with Clinton, or even George Bush for that matter. Maybe it's time to look for some serious leaders and start building.

I disagree somewhat (if I understand the comment correctly) with "Many lack the desire for truth and justice, most don’t even know to want it.". I believe there is growing HUNGER for truth and justice/true equality in this country from the majority…but I also believe that the majority who are working hard and raising families are too busy to really 'grasp' everything going on around them…and a bigger problem I believe is they don't know HOW to think and process what they do see in the little time they have or who to trust and on what basis to make that judgment. Most learn the lessons of life the hard way…not in the classroom…but they eventually do learn sound principles via life experience whether the behavior changes or not.
People need to know HOW to think and trust their conclusions (the 'what does this mean to me' part) based in that simplicity which hopefully motivates to sustained action and watchfulness. What you have 'found' has great meaning and I'm very proud.

The following was my response to a Judicial Watch email touting their great "Victory Against ACORN" with regard to the Census Bureau's severing of ties with the organization:
While I can assume that Judicial Watch’s (and others) efforts may have had some effect on the Census Bureau’s decision to disassociate themselves from ACORN, I think you must concede that the efforts of Fox News had the greatest impact. In particular Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly working with Andrew Breitbart and amateur television journalists Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe. The latter two actually deserve the greatest credit for their brave and possibly dangerous work exposing ACORN’s almost subhuman support of nefarious activities… work that should be worthy of a Pulitzer prize … highly unlikely, considering the leftist nature of the Pulitzer sponsors.
