As the Super Committee continues to meet (largely in secret), the lasting impact of its decisions on our national security is still unclear.
The Heritage Foundation recently sat down with Frances Fragos Townsend, former Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and former New Jersey Governor and 9/11 Comission Chairman Thomas Kean at the first ever Concordia Summit on global extremism to discuss the national security threats we face and the concerns they have for our national defense in light of these looming cuts.
On the issue of defense cuts, Governor Kean was clear:
I’m concerned because none of us have seen them yet. And it’s a question of priorities. I’m not saying we’re under spending in national security. I think there’s waste there. I think there’s things that can be cut. But there’s also bone and sinew and things that are important for keeping the American people safe. And I hope the committee is intelligent enough and knowledgeable enough to make those distinctions.

I do not worry about cuts as much as the bureaucrat who is making the cuts and does not have a very good mind. That is where it gets dicey.
Meeting in secret is likely a good thing-
Trick will be get the real cuts needed quickly rather the usual smoke , mirrors and other BS we are use to from the politicians.
Real cuts, no new taxes and less government.
Pretty simple -
Early in FDR's first term Army Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur and FDR had a monumental confrontation in the Oval Office. The budget being proposed by the commiecrates cut the legs and arms off the Army and the Navy (remember the pictures of draftees in early WWII training with wooden rifles because there were no real rifles left?). MacArthur attemtped to convince Comrade FDR to relent and have his commiecrate buddies in the House and Senate change the appropriations bill to allocate more money to the War Department. FDR refused. According to MacArthur's autobiography his last words to FDR as he left the room were:
"Mr. President, in the next war when the last GI is dying in the mud with an enemy bayonet in his belly I hope whis last curse will be Roosevelt and not MacArthur."
The General left active duty shortly after the confrontation. We need another MacArthur today to go public and tell the American people what is happening. The commiecrates are doing their best to destroy our military capability.
Lets say I have been going to the grocery store with my kids and spending $100 a week. Now I have to cut spending by 50% and only have $50 a week. If my kids went shopping we would get Jiff Peanut Butter and frozen pizza and chips and soda pop. If I went we would get some meat, a chicken, fruit and veggies in season and rice and beans as well as some eggs and milk.
In the Defense budget there is some fat to trim. The issue is making sure we have expert people wielding the red ink pen.
Does that make better sense now?

Very correct Connie, Nobody claims there is no waste in the Defense budget, but lets make sure we cut those things that do nothing to help the defense of the country, and leave the things that do alone.
Bureaucratic nonsense means the cuts will affect soldiers in the field, while the REMF's keep their cushy pentagon jobs, and I am afraid that is exactly what will happen.
Is this group supposed to be like the fantastic 5 and clean up all government waist? Aside from Jon Kyl there is not one up to the task.

But, put cuts on the backs of the troops themselves at your risk, Congress. Start eliminating the top heavy General Officer structure, cut the size of the Pentagon staff, relocate overseas assets stateside.
Do not mess with the snuffies pay.

Simple if you have at least 2 active brain cells bumping around between the earwax, sadly, that excludes most politicians.
I've seen those film clips. Pretty pathetic. To the best of my knowledge, those were Guard units federalized in 1940. They had 20 year old armoured cars running around with cardboard signs that said "Tank". Heh.
MacArthur, however, was the one who ran the bonus marchers out of DC in 1932. I have no love for Dugout Doug.
I can think of a lot of gov't spending that should be cut before Defense. Start with the hundreds of billions that Downgrade has added to the budget.

Personally I think the entire Government should go on a diet. Sell off fleets by 50% and stop all conference travel for 1 year. On bases run a few buses around and stop the jeeps and cars and sell them. How much non-training flight is going on? Cancel it. VIDEO-CONFERENCE! One million modest cuts adds up to big money. The Feds have some obscene number of vacant properties the maintain for nothing. It is about 10,000 buildings that we do not need. That alone is worth what? 100 BILLION Dollars? Cut the drivers and limos in DC to pre-Obama levels and get rid of hundreds of high-end rides.
There's *a lot* of waste in the "defense" department. The problem is what one person says is wasteful, another claims is necessary. I think eliminating the TSA and letting the airlines handle securing their planes would be a great start.
I will go for the ban on "conferences" cutting non training or mission oriented flight, selling off vacant, or unused property.
But I would really like to know what you mean by fleets, if you are talking about the seemingly endless amounts of Gov cars that every mid level paper pusher seems to have, OK I'm down with that, if you mean ships, then, no way, we need the hardware, cut the bureaucratic BS no problem, but I draw the line at cutting hardware and operators, especially if it is already bought and paid for.
Fleets of cars. Excess ships can mothball if needed. Not cutting troops or training. I want a strong military without the fat JD.
Liberals (all) have sought the complete destruction of the United Statres of America, and everything the United States has stood for, for as long as I can remember. So, i do not see how any one who believes him, or herself, an American ,can at ,any time, support or defend a Liberal.

This super committy has to go away with ObamaCare ASAP. The Congress wants to be TOO BIG TOO report to the American people, and have the electorate determine their job job security for their right or wrong decisions.
We got this because criminal politicians won't admit they are criminal and the honest ones say "that's OK. We'll work with you." And they find a way to do that.
Washington is DIRTY! We trusted them due to a war emergency which developed and look what happened! Government leaders better learn to work in the light of day, and the honest ones better decide to investigate and and accuse the criminals where ever they may be! Who ever they may be!

Strong defense starts at home. Stop funding terrorist, through the outsourcing of our petro-dollars, and stop borrowing .41 cents of every dollar the federal government spends. Secure the border, eliminate the TSA, allow Israel to deal with Iranian nuclear weapons and stop nation building.
Only if the right or should I say Right people at the table, but I think Hairy Reid will be there so it's nil.
