The American Flag is Disrespectful on Cinco de Mayo?
by Greg Knapp
We’ve reached a new low. A high school disciplined students for wearing American flag t-shirts to school because they did so on Cinco de Mayo. As some of the students of Mexican descent explained – “That’s ‘our’ day.”
“We knew it was Cinco de Mayo. But we just came to show our flag,” said student Dominic Maciel. “We didn’t mean anything by it. We didn’t want to start anything. Nothing like that.”
We obviously aren’t teaching our kids well. They should know that the American flag is offensive in America! I blame the parents.
Student Anthony Caravalho was also sent home for not turning his shirt inside out. “They said we had to wear our t-shirts inside out and then we could go back to class and we said no,” said Caravalho. “It would be disrespectful to the flag by hiding it.”
It’s our flag that’s disrespectful. They could have avoided trouble and been hailed as tolerant if they’d burned the American flag t-shirts.
Some Mexican-American students KTVU spoke with said they thought wearing red, white and blue on Cinco de Mayo was disrespectful. “It’s just kinda disrespectful that they would do that on this day,” said student Victoria Wright. “I mean, we don’t go around on 4th of July wearing red white and green and saying ‘Viva Mexico,’ because that’s disrespectful.”
Sure they live in America, they’re getting a free education at taxpayers expense, and they have tremendous opportunities here they wouldn’t have in Mexico, but they want to celebrate the country their parents couldn’t wait to get out of. That makes perfect sense. Huh?
I am a first generation American. My mother came over from England after WWII. My grandfather died flying for the RAF. But I don’t see England as my country. I’m an American and proud of it. I like England and I respect my ancestry, but I LOVE America and never find flying her flag disrespectful. The vast majority of legal immigrants feel as I do. I don’t understand the ones who don’t.
Dominic Maciel said his father is of Mexican descent. “I have no problem with them wearing their Mexican stuff, their Mexican flags,” said Maciel. “I just thought I’d show my pride. American pride.”
Way to go, Dominic. I’m not easily shocked by how far we’ve gone in the PC game. But this one got me today.

I have been tracking this since early this morning. Here are the email addresses for the principal and vice principal involved:
Miguel.Rodriguez@mhu.k12.ca.us (Vice Principal)
Nick.Boden@mhu.k12.ca.us (Principal)
This is outrageous. This is a shiny example of political correctness gone just plain stupid.
I wonder how many of the people who complained about the American flag shirts were illegals or kids of illegals. The principal should be fired.
Truly illustrative of what we’re up against. Too hell with them, wear your American flags proudly!
Where were the parents? Letting their kids walk out of the house dressed like that. May not sound like a big deal, but showing pride in your counrty is only the beginning. Whats next? Respect for our founding Fathers and that will lead to these kids reading the constitution. Anarchy I tell you!
The principal is a RACIST.
ANY day is the day for wearing American colors.
Good to see there are still a FEW America loving kids that refuse the brain-washing of the public school systems.

RESIST.
Another day, another outrage…… when will the madness stop?
Where do public school teachers get off discriminating and trying to social engineer? They should be more tolerant and help Hispanics assimilate. They take away Christmas from Christians, and now they take away American flags from American school kids — what up?
Mexicans are having issues with Americans wearing the American flag in America on a Mexican holiday?
So, not only would the liberals (and you just know they're behind this) have us cow-tow to terrorists, but now we're to crumble before Mexicans too? My answer to that need not be written–but from now on, I'll make a point to purchase and wear OFTEN articles displaying the American flag. Thanks for the inspiration, Mexico.
I read that story to my two boys this morning before I drove them to school.
I spent the last hour creating the tea-shirt design in PhotoShop that they will be wearing tomorrow to their schools.
Iron on transfers are great for instant satisfaction.

I double dog dare the schools to try that BS with me.
Not Over.
One way tickets back to the country they love, all first class. I'll chip in. It would save how much over the long run? And once they get back to paradise they can tell their fellow citizens how terrible it is. Yep, we'll be seeing a real drop-off in the number of border-jumpers real soon…
Their dumb-sh!t parents should lose all of their federal assistance payments immediately. Tax remittances to Mexico. No more foreign aid. Close the border…
I just sent the principal and cc'd the vice principal the following:
Sir
You need to remind the vice-principal who sent students home yesterday for wearing the US flag apparel the country that your high school is located in the USA–not Mexico. Clearly he is rather confused about that fact, which must have been the reason for his remarkably offensive and oafish behavior towards the students who choose to wear the colors of the USA at school. The vice-principal should publicly apologize to the students for his ill-considered actions as well. I suggest that if the vice principal refuses to publicly apologize, he should be terminated.
As for being some students feeling that wearing the US flag on Cinco de Mayo is disrespectful, the vice-principal should remind those offended students that disrespectful is failure to be grateful for the privileges and liberties derived from legal residence in the USA. If he or those students do not appreciate the benefits of residing in the USA they are all more than welcome to depart this country for countries where their sentiments regarding Mexico are shared–such as Mexico.
Finally, this is the sort of thoughtlessly arrogant action that reinforces opposition to public schools as well as inflame popular opinion against both legal and illegal immigrants from Mexico.
Respectfully,
Beneath the ground in every American war cemetery, there is much spinning.
The American flag should be able to be worn 365 days a year, no ifs, ands, or buts……We are in the USA,
aren't we?…..Everyday there seems to be more BS, and an attempt to demoralize the American citizen….
Mexicans in Mexico don't even celebrate this holiday! This is such bull crap! Here it is just a reason to eat mexican food and drink margaritas! These teachers and hispanic children are or have been terribly misguided. Not to mention, the school is in America, funded by american dollars and if the american children want to wear a shirt with an american flag on it so be it! Quit whining and get over it!
The real kicker: Rush mentioned this morning Cinco de Mayo is not even celebrated in Mexico. They do not even get the day off of work.
Cinco de Mayo is the date of an important battle in the Mexican war against the French (La Batallia de Puebla).
However, the day was always in Mexico just an historical date and never a,………. "holiday" (i.e Sept. 16).
Some 25 years or so ago,…A Mexican beer ("Corona") started to be distributed here in the US.
A very successful Madison Ave. ad campaign started to push the "Cinco de Mayo" as a holiday,……
to be celebrated with the drinking of "Corona Beer".
This became such a popular yearly event that they even started to celebrate "Cinco de Mayo" in Mexico.
AND NOW THIS,………….Americans can not wear the colors of their nation because of OUR "Cinco de Mayo"
The students that were sent home,……no big deal,………….
I'm sure they enjoyed the day off.,……..but the tragedy of this farce,…………is
we see the legitimization of the proliferation of of Mexican insecurity.
Something I have fought and shunned all my life.
The vile, repulsive, and destructive behavior of Progessives is limitless.
Gosh, I was taught in public school that the Founding Fathers were a bunch of slave-owning WASPs who made their $$$ oppressing the poor underclass. Wait, that's not true?!?!?
Part of the strength of America is the diverse voting bloc provided by the Democratic Party.
Ensuring that we recognize those that make up the sub-groups of the bloc is a great way to fosters the strength of diversity.
If we simply tell everyone to wear American flags and have everyone simply celebrate holidays that commemorate significant days relative to American history; we miss a golden opportunity to strengthen, empower and embolden these sub-groups.
Without strong subgroups, how can we utilize the strength of diversity to make our country better. For everyone.
Viva Mehico!
Today, we are all Mexicans!
"Some Mexican-American students KTVU spoke with said they thought wearing red, white and blue on Cinco de Mayo was disrespectful. “It’s just kinda disrespectful that they would do that on this day,” said student Victoria Wright. “I mean, we don’t go around on 4th of July wearing red white and green and saying ‘Viva Mexico,’ because that’s disrespectful.”"
Because, little pinhead, the Stars and Stripes is the flag of THIS country. The Mexican flag is the flag of ANOTHER country. Get it?
The point is that some students who were celebrating/wearing the flag/colors of a foreign country said they were offended by other students showing our/their country's flag/colors in one of our country's schools, so our school's authority suspended the students showing our flag to avoid a fight with those showing one of another country.
We, the People only have one flag, Old Glory/The Stars and Stripes.
Don't like that, get out and go to the country where your loyalty lies.
????????
FACT ALERT…FACT ALERT…FACT ALERT!
Cinco de Mayo was created by Corona Beer in order to sell more suds. Mexico's real Independence Day (equivalent to our July 4) is sometime in September.
I would like to offer a support of this principal's principles – seeing as how the comments have pretty much all found fault with his actions – but I can't. His behavior is simply wrong. But he's not the only one. Everyday there is at least one story of what I consider to be outrageous behavior on the part of a school official/ teacher. Some days several. Those with kids should be the ones to act, however. I have no dog in the fight – just that constantly growing sense of loss as I watch America being turned into a heap of politically correct refried beans. Here in Arizona they – those Latino thugs who feel they still own this state – shaped those refried beans into swastikas and painted the windows on the Capitol building. And we care about how they FEEL? Nonsense.
Cinco de Mayo is commemorating the Battle of Puebla not the independence of Mexico, i.e. it is not their 4th of July.
Ah to be young and stupid again.
Maybe the assistant principal of the school has a secret identity as The Flag Smasher
I am getting out my flag pin and plan to wear it proudly from now on, as a proud American and as a proud Conservative. How about all of us Patriots wear this great country's colors to show support and solidarity for the Great Republic which is our USA.
Why, so taxpayers can pay for it? You can't make a public school go bankrupt. Patriotic Americans are screwed either way.
I’ve seen the future. You know what it is? It’s a 47-year-old virgin, sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing, “I’m an Oscar Meyer wiener.
Rush Limbaugh said that Cinco de Mayo isn't even a Mexican holiday. It is something started by a beer company to sell beer and hijacked by the Commies (remember the May Day parade in Moscow) and Marxists union folks.

Where is the ACLU on this story? Haven't heard a peep yet out of them.
Surely this student had his civil rights and his right to free speech violated. This student broke no rule about apparel.
Now Americans know how Germany felt when Hitler took over. It's like decades of Progressivism have come to a head and we are witnessing the absolute takeover.
That's the biggest bunch of BS I've ever heard. This country was founded and strengthened by immigrants (my grandparents came from Italy). They would be horrified to learn that in America, Americans were punished for wearing the American flag on a T-shirt. This is (was?) the greatest country on earth because we used to be a melting pot, all working together for a common good. Now, we're all divided into little sub-groups which has done great harm. Twenty years from now, none of these sub-groups – as advocated by liberals – will have a common ideal. United we stand, divided we fall. WE'RE FALLING!
I'm offended by the school's offensive actions! They should stop being offended so that I will not be offended!
(Nick and Miguel probably voted for NObama's hope & change… suckas)
The Mexicans were lucky they were fighting the French cause if they were fighting U.S.Marines. They wouldn't be celebrating Cinco de Mayo .They'd be Mourning It.
Did they lower Old Glory on the flagpole in front of the school and run up the flag of Mexico?
I'm sure glad the internet is around to expose this kind of nonsense. Now lets use it to take back America; including our schools and our government. THROW THSE KIND OF RAT BASTARDS OUT!!!
The kids that were sent home by the leftwing cockroaces should sue the school for violations of their constitutional rights. Play the lefts game and smash them.
Many of them illegally cross our border, live off our system and tax dollars, etc… That's disrespectful!
Am I to believe NOBODY in Mexico wears red, white and green on 4th of July? I find that doubtful…
I wonder if they complained in Spanish, or English…? Yeah, it's cruel to wonder that. Lo siento. Si. Hablo Espaniol…
Cinco De Mayo is NOT a holiday in the USA, it is recognized by non-Mexicans as a day to drink Coronas . I say, ENJOY your Cinco de Mayo celebration! But don't piss on us!
They really should drink Dos Equis instead, I mean if it's good enough for the Most Interesting Man In The World then it must be good enough for a bunch of third world leeching Invaders from that cesspool that keeps allowing it's stench to waft northward over our borders.
Why would an American Flag be disrespectful? A French flag maybe (Cinco de Mayo celebrates a battle victory of the Mexicans over the French), but not an American Flag.
What makes this even more disturbing is that Cinco de Mayo is primarily an American holiday; that's right, Cinco de Mayo is all but ignored in the country of Mexico. Americans can wear the flag on any day, and anywhere in the world. If people are upset by it, then that has more to do with their own problems. It is not our job to coddle every single group that might be offended by something. These days, people are hell-bent to be offended, and are just waiting to claim that they were somehow wronged. They should just grow a pair, and quit wasting everyone's time with these complete-waste-of-time-phoney issues.
I has become an excuse to party (as someone already said), in the same way St. Patrick's Day has lost any of its original real meaning and is also an excuse to drink and party. The Mexicans I heard commenting on the radio, said it isn't even a reason to celebrate.
. . . or liberals
No, they'd be American and our southern border would be with Guatemala.
This entire episode makes me want to ask everyone celebrating "Mexican Pride" one simple question: If your country is so great and you're so proud of it, why are you fighting so hard to stay in the United States? It only seems logical that if all of you celebrating Cinco de Mayo have such grand opinions of Mexico and think it's such a wonderful place, you would choose to live THERE instead of HERE. If anyone feels the Mexican flag and the colors of Mexico deserve more respect than the American flag–and indeed, are offended by our nation's colors, no matter when they are flown or worn–they are in the wrong country.
Perhaps Andrew will post the responses, if any are provided…on BG. My gut tells me these spineless parasites will have no response. Simply refer us to the ACLU or an attorney who is being funded by the tax payer.
Just like someone said earlier…another day, another outrage…when does it stop?
Only one questions needs to be answered. Was the American flag being flown on the Flagpole outside the school. If so then the suspension of the students with flags on their shirts was beyond stupid. The principal needs to resign for terminal stupidity.
I am of Irish, Scottish, Finn, and Polish descent. My great-grandparents would slap me silly if I flew any flag other than Old Glory.
When I'm cut, I bleed RED, WHITE, AND BLUE. I am 100% American!

Right. That refers to the flag. But images of the Flag? Are we to treat Old Glory as fundamentalist Muslims treat Mohammed?
Wearing the American flag on your clothing ANY day is disrespectful!!!!
From the American Flag Code::
The flag should not be used as "wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery",[1] or for covering a speaker's desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins). Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
hard to understand that people dont know this already!!
And then people dont undrstand about Abu Ghraib. Our code as American Soldiers was covered under the
Geneva Convention relative to the treatment of prisoners of war (Convention III of 12 August 1949)
Additional Protocol I, Part II
Reading the comments here scares me. From both sides.
I am assuming you are only referring to the people who have immigrated legally to our country. So by celebrating a holiday that only the US and one State in Mexico recognizes is a good way to get the people to assimilate to our ways and traditions. Here is the thing that fascinates me most about this so called Mexican Holiday is that is only about a battle that the Mexican govt won during the invasion by the French who only invaded due to the Mexican govt not paying back the loans they received from France.
How about we have a holiday for the Boston Tea Party, Washington Crossing the Delaware, Battle of Lexington and Concord, etc… These were all events that actually happened in the US. Why do we not celebrate the Canadian Independence Day. Heck why do we not commemorate Mexico's actual independence day.
I like it Brother Nathan. Sort of Manifest Destiny Southward. Still worth thinking about indeed.
Again, an image of the flag is allowed under the code; rearrangement of the components of the flag is not. That's why pins are ok, boxer shorts aren't.
I am of Mexican descent–according to their rules, I am a Mexican-American; but I feel 100% American and that itself dictates my behavior and attitudes. I love America; and it pisses me off when I see (and it is frighting how often this happens, especially in SoCal) people driving around in their cars with the name of their Mexican village of origin plastered on their rear window and a Mexican flag motif on their license plate frame–oh, and their charming claim 'viva Mexico'. I don't understand why they are even here if they are so proud of a country which treats its citizens like pieces of crap–which is fitting since Mexico (from top to bottom) can be compared to a toilet. God Bless America!
Argh. No one in this story showed proper respect for the American Flag. No one. The students who were sent home were violating the Flag Code, which says that the flag is not to be worn.
You are dead on about the hyphen theory. Introduce me to someone who identifies themselves with a hyphen-American and I will introduce you to someone who feels they are entitled.
.. EXCEPT from the back of Berkeley fire trucks.. wouldn't want to offend anyone.
It most certainly is disrespectful for a student to display an American flag purposely on Cinco de Mayo. But On the other hand it brings up other questions:
Isn't it a bit disrespectful to make American schools celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
Isn't celebrating other cultures all part of the purpose to bring us all together and unite us?
The act does not deserve consequences. Especially to the point of having to sent the student home!

I've been sayin' this for 4 months, we should just stampede MX. What would they do?
They don't have the infrastructure or law enforcement to control us. If we take our own

Exactly how is it disrespectful to display an American flag on Cinco de Mayo? It is NOT Mexican independence day. It is not even a national holiday in Mexico. It is only celebrated in the Mexican state of Pueblo. Is it disrespectful to display an American flag on St Patricks day?
Yesterday I called the Suns office and cancelled my season tickets of 35 years. I will never watch another NBA game again!!!
I agree with ShowME regarding wearing of the flag. The problem is that civics is not taught in our school any more. They are too busy indoctrinating our kids in progressive ideology.
Cinco de Mayo was promoted by beer companies in the USA (including Corona, Dox Equis, etc.) trying to cash in on another excuse to ramp up sales.
That's all.
Yeah. I'm always annoyed when I see the American flag on display in St. Patrick's Day parades! I mean, how rude!
NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF?? Estupido!! :-/
It's not really a Mexican holiday – they don't celebrate Cinco de MAyo in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo was invented in California, making Cinco de Mayo an American holiday, making the American flag doubly appropriate!
Per Comrade Prophet Obama, there are 59 states.
He said he visited 57 states but his staff said he didn't have time to visit Alaska and Hawaii.
Everyone should know that there are 59 states!
I feel bad because I can name only 50 of them.
When I'm interned at the Obama Re-Education Camp, I'll probably learn the names of the other 9.

@ Victoria Wright:
You said:
“I mean, we don’t go around on 4th of July wearing red white and green and saying ‘Viva Mexico,’ because that’s disrespectful.”
Excuse me, but your analogy is woefully flawed.
1) First, the 4th of July is an American holiday celebrated IN AMERICA.
2) Where do you get off feeling dis-respected by an American wearing an American flag IN AMERICA?!
The only way you could possibly feel disrespected, is if you think that this country actually belongs to you — that it's really Mexico. Here's a clue, young Lady. It doesn't belong to you — unless you are an American — and you AREN'T in Mexico.
If you ARE an American SHAME ON YOU for what you said. By all means celebrate your Mexican HERITAGE. But don't you DARE start putting down the flag of the country that feeds you, protects you, and educates you. You can be loyal to only one country, Miss Wright. Have you shown us your true colors, or did you simply not think this through?
Bill Smith
Why is it that the only "Mexican-American" they quoted as considering it disrespectful has an Anglo name? Just wondering.

Boycott Mexico and spend your next vacation in Arizona.
In Greeley, Co., at Greeley West H.S., there was a riot, and the school was locked down. This happened yesterday. Evidently several student displayed American flags in the back windows of their vehicles. (Some were new additions, some kids have had them for a while.) This sparked outrage among the Mexican students, who then rioted in the "commons" area, chanting, "F*%# Whitey, F*%# America." Several students were hurt, and several teachers were assaulted while trying to restore order.
Sometime, somehow, during all this, all of the flags that were in the vehicles were removed. But not by the students, themselves. Someone went into locked, private cars and trucks, without the owners' knowledge or permission, and removed them.

Look at your email addresses closely. What do they end with? .US is “America’s Internet Address". In other words, this is not Mexico. I don't care what day of the year it is, you are living in, working in, learning in and are a part of the UNITED States of AMERICA. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico, and even if it was, any American on American soil is allowed to wear whatever patriotic clothing or emblems they choose.
To confuse patriotism with hate speech, heritage disrespect or race baiting is juvenile and to display it publicly and with such eggregious actions is unacceptable for a person who has a role in setting the mind sets of our future generations. If Miguel Rodriquez (I smell a conflict of interest here) is responsible for this action (kicking kids out of school because they are being patriotic), he should be fired and banned from holding any office in school or government. If it is someone else, then the same judgement should be applied.
Nobody is trying to "strip" the Mexican Americans of their heritage, don't try and strip patriots of theirs.
CORONA BEER plied it in advertising and sheep ran with it.
