The thing is, I learned from my one mistake. I went out and got a job with health insurance. While on that job, I used its education assistance program to advance my education. Working 10 pm to 8 am, leaving work to go straight to class, and then coming home to babysit my newborn so my wife could go to work--it wasn't fun at all. But you know what? One year after that started, I got a new job, with what amounts to a 300% raise, with 9-5 hours, and an even better health plan. And I did that myself. The government did not help me, and I think that if they had, I'd have been content to take my handout, rather than pull myself up by my bootstraps. Pride. Self-worth. Teachable moments. The government can't provide that.

We've had lots of "medical tragedies" since then. And they've been paid for, up front, by my year of sleepless nights and sleepless days, 50 hour workweeks, and full time studies.

Unfortunate the best verb this writer could develop was "whining" while regarding the oped. Hands down Janet Trautwein knows more about the consumers and professionals in the health care mix than any reporter, preceded drug company affiliate, sans real life experience: Have you always had a health insurance policy?

Someone from another post referred me to a site called www.Dearpolitician.org to write my politicians. The site is really cool in the fact that it automates everything and you can write your President, Vice President, Senators, and Congressman. The really interesting parts are that you can write complete Senate and Congressional committees. After you write what you want to say in the body of the template, you can print them off and mail them yourself or you can have Dearpolitician.org fax them to their offices instantly for FREE. If you want your letters delivered today, go to that site! Just passing along a cool site!
