Fall of the Wall: The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance
by Gregory ConkoTwenty years ago today, a figurative and literal tear appeared in the once seemingly impenetrable Iron Curtain–the Berlin Wall came tumbling down. Soon after, millions of East Germans and others under Soviet domination would rise up and demand their freedom.
That day, November 9, 1989, will be remembered forever as one of the greatest in the history of human liberty. Throughout the East Bloc, communism would begin to fall. Millions would begin to experience political and social freedom for the first time. Families, separated for nearly 30 years would be reunited. And, throughout Eastern Europe, the fall of the Berlin Wall would create an opportunity to expose communism’s violent and merciless legacy.
In the United States, though, the anniversary will pass with barely a mention. With a few noteworthy exceptions (see here and here), the American media has treated the event as an opportunity to praise Mikhail Gorbachev, condemn the West, and lament the coming of crony capitalism in Russia.
Not wanting to let the opportunity pass, some of my colleagues at the Competitive Enterprise Institute have produced a short video commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall .
The fight for freedom is not over, of course. There remain in the world such tyrannies as China, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, and far too many others. Let us not forget this singular event, nor forget that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

Eternal vigilance?
"While America slept, Communism crept"……..
We were complacent. We were comfortable. We allowed these thugs to gain power. I sure hope they will leave without a bloodbath, but every thinking man and woman knows that won't be the case.
Obamas view of the fall of the wall- "those tea baggin, anti-govt. jerks!…trouble makers!"
Eternal vigilance. sounds very much like what this country needs from citizens. never again shall people like obama, reid and pelosi ever ever ever find themselves a job in our government. they are wrong for us now and will forever be wrong for us. Down with them all.
Great video! Wow.
If anyone is interested, here are some good movies about the Stasi and East Germany. I've seen all of these and loved them –
The Legend of Rita (2001) – Woman in Baader-Meinhof escapes to East Germany and is disillusioned with Socialism.
The Tunnel (2001) – Based on the true story of East Germans who dug a 145 yard tunnel under Berlin. Edge of yer seat!
The Lives of Others (2007) – The Stasi take surveillance to a whole new level. GREAT film.
I've rented Night Crossing (1982) several times but it always arrives broken. Very strange! (True story of family who tries to escape East Germany in hot air balloons).
Under Obamacare, there going to have to build alot of new jails. I have never seen so many people outright refuse to buy into this garbage. But, then again 3 meals a day, a free bed, cable tv, a free college education, access to free lawyers doesn’t sound that bad!
Twenty years ago I was watching with tears of joy. Today I watch again with tears in my eyes. Those behind the Iron Curtain are FREE AT LAST because of the power and success of the USA…..and out president is determined to duplicate every mistake made by the communists. The difference is simple : Reagan is gone and we have elected a president who openly admits that he "sought out the marxist teachers" at Columbia and Harvard and that many of his friends were communists. Americans…please wake up and think about the value of FREEDOM.
I grew evermore disgusted by this president, when he could not contemplate outside of HIS OWN EGO, the contributions of Reagan and Thatcher that truly brought down the Berlin Wall. Instead, he sends an enormous video feed of his mug while European leaders stand together to commemorate this anniversary. All these behaviors portray what a little man Obama must be to make even this anniversary more about him than anyone else.

Cuba? A tyranny? Are you mad? The only time the words 'Cuba' and 'tyranny' should appear in the same sentence is when discussing the illegal economic blockade of the the island by the real tyranny in the area the bullies of the good old U.S. of A.
