“Cities Are Probably the Greenest Thing That Humans Do.”
by Gregory ConkoA few years ago, environmental guru, Merry Prankster, and Whole Earth Catalog author Stewart Brand caused a minor stir with an article he wrote in the MIT publication, Technology Review. Brand, who was an early advocate of the “back to the land” movement of the 1960s and 1970s, had done some re-thinking, and he concluded that environmentalist opposition to things like urbanization, population growth, biotechnology, and nuclear power generation, was wrong and needed to change.

Now, Brand has written a new book, called Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto, in which he takes on these environmental shibboleths in a more concerted fashion. On American Public Radio’s Marketplace program yesterday, host Kai Ryssdal discussed the new book with Brand. Asked what prompted him to write the book, Brand said that,
“My fellow environmentalists have been wrong about a couple of issues and were getting in the way of important things we should be doing, both with biotechnology and with nuclear technology, and in terms of how we think about cities, and in terms of how I know we’re going to think about geoengineering–that is, direct intervention in the climate.”
Ryssdal contrasted Brand’s earlier support for the back to the land movement with his current belief that big cities are better for the environment.
“Not only big cities, but big slums … that’s how [poor people in the developing world] are getting out of poverty. They’re emptying out a lot of the subsistence farms that have been tough on the landscape all over the world, moving into towns for opportunity, building jobs for each other. They’re also moving up what’s called the energy ladder, toward more and better grid electricity. By and large the cities are probably the greenest thing that humans do.”
On his support for biotech crops, Brand said,
“Already, the crops we have now, the herbicide-tolerant and the insect-resistant crops … [are] getting what amounts to higher yields. You can raise more food on less land, and all of that is good for ecology in general and the climate particularly.”
Challenged that critics call them Frankenfoods, Brand replied,
“The idea there was that Dr. Frankenstein was doing something against nature, and that somehow the genetically engineered food crops are against nature. And as a biologist, I’m just baffled by that line of argument because agriculture has been in that sense against nature for 10,000 years. That we’re finally able to do more precise tuning of the crops is a huge gain, not a loss.”

Is it possible for dyed in the wool, liberal enviroMENTAL cases to see the light? this guy must have gone off his lib-meds long enough to sober up and get a wee taste of reality. Thank God! There is still hope for others.
Stewart Brand has always been one of the more rational smart people around. You could tell that by browsing through the Whole Earth Catalog, which probably trained us for the Filsons and LL Beans a bit later. They didn't know it but they were the survivalist, hermetic precursors of so many of the fargone rightists today. Federal taxes and federal tax stamps both proved to be the anathema of so many of us browsers. The article praising cities and wondering where the nuke plants are just shows you what rational thought is.
In the same headline, you show some quote about not eating meat anymore. Trouble is : all this attention just gins up the controversy and the press has written the stories awhile ago and they just plug them in . And they are all the same and they are for the cap and trade. So beware, the storybaiting doesn't have to catch the fish, just draw attention to the shoreline and the people down there, "what are they doing ?".
There are two types of died in the wool liberal enviroMENTAL cases. Basically they break down between Gaia worshiping tree huggers and the Marxists that have hijacked their cause for the advancement of their own cause.
Currently the Marxists are in charge, not the environmentalists, so the environment is not actually their cause.
An interesting read on the subject from the guy that started (and then was eventually run out of) Greenpeace http://online.wsj.com/public/article_print/SB1208...
Wonder if the Tree Huggers will wake up and see they are being taken for a ride, probably not. You have a Great perspective on the issue!!!!
Same thing happened with all the other liberal sacred cows (unions, non-profits (ala ACORN)), the idealists who started them and who went to work for them were supplanted and then perverted.
It is comforting to know, that family and subsistence farms are being abandoned, in favor of creating ever increasing slums. Perhaps they could finance auto companies in these new slums, or start windmill factories.
Brand deserves credit for viewing Humans in a positive light, instead of the "pox" view of the fringier types. I used to shop at the Whole Earth store in Berkeley in the early 90s – and loved it. A great variety of wonderful merchandise. Capitalism and being environmentally responsible are not incompatible.
Capitalism and being environmentally responsible are not incompatible.
Indeed, one can see how the free markets can potentially reward the environmentally responsible.
The poor man. He's striding into the den of fanatic environmentalist believers armed with nothing except FACTS. Doesn't he realize that the Left is immune?.
This guy has just painted a huge bullseye on his back. He doesn't know what a ride he's in for. He'll get pies in the face, have his cars torched, be screamed down whenever he speaks, and so on.
Julian Simon had a similar concept in his "The Ultimate Resource"
The guy behind this is Maurice Strong – the enemy of Western Capitalism!
“What if a small group of these world leaders were to conclude that the principle risk to the earth comes from the actions of the rich countries? And if the world is to survive, those rich countries would have to sign an agreement reducing their impact on the environment? Will they do it? Will the rich countries agree to reduce their impact on the environment? Will they agree to save the earth?
“The group’s conclusions is ‘no.’ The rich countries won’t do it. They won’t change. So, in order to save the planet, the group decides: Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilization collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?”
Two years after making that statement, Strong laid the foundation, and helped in the creation of the Kyoto Protocol.

This site should be on every conservative's favorites list!
Guys come on *whiny voice* scientists don't yet know for certain if heartier lettuce that resists pesticides won't rise up someday and overthrow the pox on the earth that is the human race! We can't risk anything, we must put a stop to advancements in technology in agriculture and energy!
I don't see how the Green movement can use his ideas to extort money from the rest of us. So he is not a real environmentalist.
Makes sense!. These kind of things don't happen by accident and they do not happen in a vacuum. Not hard to line up a bunch of loser countries headed by petty dictators (aka the UN) and convince them to get behind an idea to take tons of money from the big bad USA, after all they have too much and it is right to share the wealth with others less fortunate. Trouble is that all the money in the world will not help the people of those countries but serve to only greatly enrich their pos leaders. I have an idea though, lets say it passes and we have to pay this extortion. I say we cut off whatever foreign aid we had been giving previously. I believe in most cases it would be a wash.
Stewart started seeing the light about 4 years ago and has been a target ever since. A few more Buckyballs and he might realize how badly he was really used.
