It Can’t Be True: More on that Missile Defense Agency logo
by Frank GaffneyIn a post here Wednesday, under the headline “Can This Possibly Be True?,” I called attention to a “new” logo being used by the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency (MDA) on the grounds that it bore a disconcerting resemblance to an amalgamation of the Obama campaign’s logo and the symbols of Islam, the crescent and a single star. It turns out the answer is “no,” it isn’t true that the MDA’s logo is exactly new or, apparently, that it reflects an Obama-directed redesign.
We have since learned that the logo has been used at the MDA website since at least October 2009. Matters are made more confusing by the fact that the agency continues to use its older shield-like logo for online and other purposes. The contract for a complete rebranding for MDA was let in 2007, during the Bush administration, although much of the work appears to have been done in 2008 in follow-on contracts during the presidential campaign in which the Obama logo was much in evidence.
It has also been observed that – rather than embracing the symbolic crescent and star, they could be interpreted as the targets of the intercepting swoosh in the MDA’s latest logo. If so, the 2009 design would presumably be offensive to Islamists, rather than evidence of submission to them.
For these reasons, I am content to have the question posed in the last post be answered in the negative, and I regret any confusion caused by my suggesting otherwise. The other criticisms I leveled at the Obama administration in connection with its serial and indisputable assaults on the Pentagon’s missile defense programs and capabilities – which the Missile Defense Agency is responsible for building – stand. Here’s an example:

It’s a real-life example of what the old MDA logo – and okay, yes, the new MDA logo – represent in our missile defense systems: in this case, our nation’s only program capable of providing a near-term ability to intercept ballistic missiles early in their flight (i.e., the boost-phase).
Yet in the proposed 2011 budget, the Airborne Laser Testbed will never see production. As SpaceNews reports, “The MDA at one time had plans to field operational versions of the ABL for boost-phase missile defense, but the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama has scaled back the program. Plans now call for using the experimental ABL platform as a test bed for research on directed energy weapons.”
After years of effort, the MDA achieved a breakthrough success two weeks ago. The administration should reverse their plans to defund the Airborne Laser Testbed. Build on success – don’t punish it.

Well of course he would defund the program as it would put the U.S. on higher ground then the rest of the world and make their nukes obsolete.. My understanding of this defence system is its limited to a 6 mile range and more for Sub lanched nukes ( mounted on ships and shore lines ), we have one airplane so far with this system that could be used for land based missiles but we would need fleets flying at all times for it to be effective.. At this point I wouldn't expect anything less from Obama then to cut the funding as I'm sure China doen't like it…

Not really. Chemical rockets are old technology, without much room left over the tech asymtote. Instantaneous boost-phase intercept is the Holy Grail of missile defense; quite the opposite of "wasteful", which is trying to intercept mulitple re-entry phase RV's.

I do find it perplexing that the Commander-in-Chief seems hell-bent on UNdefending the country. We pulled back plans for a missile defense base in Poland (not the first time we've sold the Poles up the river to make Russia happy…), and now canceling funding for the OTHER item that could have possible defended us from incoming ballistic missiles. They're MUCH harder to track after boost-phase, the heat signature is MUCH MUCH smaller.
i doubt we'll be seeing too many incomings from Russia, but remember that Iran has recently accomplished two things: 1. Put an object into orbit. 2. Enriched uranium.
What happens when you combine those two items? If you can put something in space, you can generally make it fall wherever you wish.
I just hope Kim Jong Il or Achmadinadingdong don't wake up feeling brave, before 2012.

The only comment I've made was to say that being concerned about reduction in the missile defense network is a valid issue. If anything, that's a statement agreeing with a strong defense. (Which I certainly think we should have.) So, what, pray tell, do you think I said about bombs or missiles that was "mordantly stupid?"
And the first priority of this nation is protecting the individual rights of it's citizens. It secures that from outside threats with a strong and capable military. I've never disparaged the military in this thread or any other because I have great respect for the military and know that it's one of the valid functions of government.
I believe that you may be confusing me with someone else, which, on its own, is a harmless mistake. However, your assumptions about me and what I believe, simply because I don't scream with indignation at every opportunity, cast you in the light of the ignorant and unthinking.
