Depend On The Government For Your Health Care? Good Luck…

Under the guise of coverage for pre-existing conditions and the security of knowing that you can’t be kicked off your insurance when you really need it, the democrats have pushed through a bill which will lead to the end of health care as we know it.
Besides taxing us from everything from our unearned income, to payroll taxes to medical devices we can look forward to paying into a pot for the next four years. I only hope the money will be available for health care. As it stands now, it will be used to set up yet another government bureaucracy run by various task forces and yet another Czar to oversee the entire mess. If we’re lucky they will actually use the money for the intended purpose, but I have visions of the social security lock box. It is hard to believe that this will end up any better than Medicare, The Post Office or Social Security – big, bloated and bankrupt.
The bill sets up committees to study ways to deliver care. A committee to study what another committee is supposed to do? Sounds like bureaucracy at its finest. It is hard to believe that that money used to ‘study’ things will be used for patient care. By the time 2014 rolls around what money will be left to implement medical care?
The government sold health care reform with 5 basic talking points:
1. You won’t be able to be kicked off of your insurance when you really need it
- Turns out that the insurance companies CAN kick you off if they pay a fine. It is not hard to imagine that an insurance company will figure out pretty quickly that it would be cheaper to pay the fine than to pay for coverage of a long term chronic illness.
2. You won’t be denied medical care for pre-existing conditions.
- If the insurance company deems that you have lied on the application you will be denied coverage.
- Sick children are no longer considered to have pre-existing conditions, but what about women who are pregnant?
3. You can keep the doctor you have if you are already covered.
- With the cuts in Medicare reimbursements that have already happened (no more consultation fees) and the looming 21% cut at the end of October. Many more physicians than the current 30% are looking to opt out of Medicare. When the commercial insurance reimbursement rates drop (as they invariably will since they pay at a percentage of Medicare) there will be more doctors looking to leave commercial insurance as well.
4. Health care reform will lead to increased access
- There is no way that there will be an increase in access when you take into account; 1) the physician shortage, 2) Those physicians who will leave medicine after the passage of this monstrosity (a recent poll of physicians states that 35% would leave the profession), and 3) those who will stop taking insurance all together because they are simply fed up.
- Expanding Medicaid to those who are currently uninsured is not going to help since most doctors are not taking Medicaid now. Currently access to specialists is pretty poor, it will decline further.
5. Health care reform will cover 30 million more uninsured people
- The bill will cover approximately 7 million more people over the next nine years and leave over 100 million people under insured.
6. The health care reform bill will decrease the deficit
- The CBO numbers do not take into account the “doctor fix” and the government takeover of student loans was added to pad the numbers.
- If you do real world accounting by adding in the “doctor fix” (over 230 million dollars) you actually wipe out the cost savings and you increase the deficit (anywhere from 400-700 million dollars.)
- It is likely that the estimated costs will likely be much higher. How can anyone really know what is going to happen in the next 10 years. To say that these numbers are optimistic is being kind.
- The Health care reform bill has done absolutely NOTHING that would really lower the cost of health care.
The pharmaceutical companies got three major cost raising concessions
- the government cannot go out of the country to shop for cheaper drugs
- the patent for biologics was extended to 12 years from 7 thereby locking out cheaper generic drugs. (For example a patient can continue to pay over $1000 a month for a drug like Embrel instead of getting some relief.
- patients will not be able to buy cheaper over the counter medications with their health savings account only more expensive prescription medication.
The health insurance companies may whine about their profit margin, but they get millions more people to add to their roles. Most of those people will only see a doctor 1-2 times a year for routine things, but will pay 14% higher premiums for the privilege.
The hospitals which account for the biggest piece of the Healthcare pie (31%) got a pass. Surgeons have had to deal with bundling of charges for over a decade. What about applying that to hospitals? That would have certainly lowered the cost. Since bankruptcy caused by medical costs are largely due to the hospital charges.
- There has been no legislation to change their habit of itemized billing where they stand to make a profit on everything from the single pill of Tylenol to the box of Kleenex in your hospital room.
I got a call from a fellow physician today who talked about picking up stakes and doing medical work overseas. I have a feeling I am going to get a lot more of those types of calls from fellow physicians in private practice. There are only so many physicians that the hospitals can employ and only so many more patients a physician can see.
It seems that the ultimate goal of this exercise is to eventually make all physicians government employees under a single payer system. As it stands the system created by health care reform is a give away to the pharmaceutical industry and the health insurance industry (you just need to look at the rise in their stocks today). It certainly can be seen as the first step on a slippery slope towards single payer. The powers that be are banking on physicians going along like lemmings, but I have no doubt that if we don’t they will institute some sort of draconian policy to make us do it like they have in Massachusetts (medical licensure is tied to taking the state insurance plan). If that happens, good luck finding a physician who will want to deal with this.

I have never known of anyone in America, who has gone to the emergency room that was thrown out because of no insurance! It is unconstitutional to FORCE Americans to BUY something that the government has total control of! Are we going to be forced to buy GM vehicles next, because the government owns it!!???

Here is what really frightens me – This horrible president was elected SOLELY & COMPLETELY on the efforts of the media in this country. The media exerts more control over the citizens of this country than anything or anyone else – the media is corrupt and in the socialist pocket of the Obama Administration. It makes my head want to explode when I think of the power the media exerts in this country. Obama COULD NOT have been elected without them. The next step for the media will be to convince the American people that this health care bill is utopia. Congress and the Administration have helped in that area by making some of the worst parts of the bill kick in later. And then the next government takeover (whatever that is going to be) will be praised and pushed by the media until one day busy citizens who haven't been paying careful attention and have been working hard to provide for and raise their families will wake up to find our country destroyed and that we have very little freedom left. People are slowly waking up but I hope it is not too late!!
Thank you Dr. George for your common sense review of this fiasco. It is a sure thing that the money piped into this devastating piece of law will not go for the purposes for which it was intended. Sheeple will continue to believe it will, however. Those are the same sheeple who believe that health comes from having access to insurance.
Health is yours to have or to lose. Anyone who thinks it comes from having insurance and access to a doctor is deluded and they are about to get a rude awakening.
Is the time coming when people will choose to pay the government fines into the cauldron-of-no-return but seek out and pay for their own care, to self insure themselves, and go to doctors they choose to and pay cash for their care?
I have always understood that drugs, surgery and pharmaceuticals are not my first choice, they are my absolute last. I am solely responsible for maintaining my health. The idea of relying on a complete stranger to tell me to stop eating potato chips or stop smoking is as foolish as believing that they should fix me when I don't take care of myself. Accidents happen, and doctors and hospitals should be there for that. Why we, as a nation, bought into an insurance structure that pays for for every sniffle, sneeze, cramp, twinge and minor mishap will forever be a mystery to me.

What the drug companies haven't gotten wise to, is the fact that Obama will stab them in the backs with mandates for 'free' drugs and increased taxes. Oh, he gave them a deal; one which is now null and void since he got what he wanted and the drugs companies have no way to hold him to it. They made their bed and eventually those profits will be devoured by the government, who will now turn them into 'enemies' unless they do what the 'Won' says.

That is not allowed in any state now with current Insurance Regulations. There are examples of people losiing coverage, and they get resolved. It is usually from non-payment of high premiums, and sometimes by fault of Insurance companies, but the Insurance companies are not the Big Bad Wolf. There are Hundreds of millions of claims paid to save people from financial problems!
Credit Card debt is the #1 cause of bankruptcy…and people living above their means. Then when something medically happens, it exacerbates the poor choices already made.
Hi Jim. As a Canuck working in the U.S., I can tell you that an Insurance Co. canceling a policy as soon as a person gets sick is a myth. Rare as hen's teeth. Only times I've heard of it happening, is if the policy holder has lied on their application, or tried to file a fraudulent claim.. My wife is just finishing almost a year of treatments and surgeries for three different types of cancer, and we are on an HMO plan (supposedly the worst kind of plan to be on because of how many restrictizctions the insurance company puts on them). Insurance Company has paid out almost half a mill on her claims to date without a peep. Our cost out-of-pocket so far is $350 bucks in co-pays. The only calls we get from our insurance co. are to ask if we are happy with their service, and are we being treated well by our medical care providers.
On that bogus Dem bankruptcy claim, they used the Govt data base to look for bankruptcies that had ANY medical bills as part of the settlement. So someone going bankrupt for having $40K in credit card debt, and a house mortgage under water, after getting laid off, with ten bucks owed for that flu shot charged to Visa, gets counted as a "Bankruptcy related to Medical Bills". Gotta love those Dems and their statistics.

People all over the world come to the US for important medical procedures because we have great doctors. Is our system perfect? No. Could it have been improved without all the government mandates and government intrusion. Yes. How would you rate your system? Are you satisfied? Would you like to see it improve?
If you were unhappy with the way that your insurance company treated you, you could always complain to the government.
Have you figured out yet who you will complain to when you are dissatisfied with the way that the government treats you?

Half the people drank the kool-aid and drink it daily, it comes from msm-movies- TV shows- print media-educational facilities and yes the internet, some of it is subliminal, some is obvious and blatant. They drink the kool-aid because they are conditioned to receive it, they are addicted to it and totally accept it. This country has been dumbed down by progs since the 1950's. Yesterday morning I decided to visit my NPRN, who is also a friend of mine and see how she was doing with the passage of the monstrosity on Sunday. Monday's are her days off from her small rural clinic…she had had about five hours sleep the night before from dealing with an emergency till two in the morning. I could see she was somewhat distraught from the passage of the Health Care…I think she thought it would not pass like many of us did. I have been in conversation off and on with her through out this whole process. She has no idea how she is going to be able to keep her practice open. Small rural areas in our country will begin to loose the ability to have good Doc's and Nurses on staff for emergency care and the simple day to day health issues. How is this a better system? How is it addressing the true issues CONgress was suppose to address? I understand very clearly that it had nothing to do with Health Care, it is only about controlling "We the people"….and the ultimate decline of our nation….
Jim one thing I have found is there are a LOT of Canadians living in America and Mexico. I have to wonder if everything is so great in Canada why are they moving to Mexico? A small Mexican village 60 miles south of Arizona is 55% Canadian. They are not even entitled to free healthcare there but American doctors have clinics set up there and Canadians go there. The scary thing is the indoctrination of our educational system was not in full gear in the 70's. It was just starting to go into full swing. I don't mean to sound doubtful, but some of these kids will not come out of it. That is why our Public Educational System needs to be trashed and revamped. I hope he comes out of it too.

You also have to take into account that a large portion of the American uninsured are young, healthy people who could afford insurance if they were responsible, but they choose not to. As a result, when they do get sick and need help with bills, getting any insurance company to take them to cover that illness is problematic. The bills you rack up without any insurance can be bad enough to bankrupt you. However, for those people, I have little sympathy. They didn't buy in before they got sick even though they could have.
The New York Times, Newsweek and various other left-wing media outlets are on the verge of bankruptcy. MSNBC has the most dismal ratings of any cable news outlets. Americans are awake, they have risen from their complacency and they will prevail. The progressives in media have always white washed genocide, infanticide, and human rights violations. They view terrorists as freedom fighters and eugenics as positive social avenues. We know how the media will continue to view the dismantling of our Country and Americans will ignore them, you'll see, the gross over reaching of the Democratic party has detailed how heinous and egregious the people in power are, it has brought to light the radical agenda and Americans will not stand for it. It is not too late, our freedom will be restored.
I work in detroit, and have occasion to provide care for Canukians who get sick over here. Your Ontatrio health care system will not pay us for the care we provide, ever. We are obligated to provide the emergency care, however. All of the Canukian nurses who work here in the US (and there are many) all want US health insurance, and seem to prefer to get their care on this side of the border, especially for operations.
Maybe it's just coincidence, but my eye doctor's office called to announce his retirement yesterday.
I hope you are right but not everyone is tuned into more than headlines and sound bites. Obama got elected because of the media whitewashing his record and fawning over him. The media DECIDED Obama would be our next president and made it happen!! Many people have woken up since then but I hope it is enough.

My concern is, where are new doctors going to come from? Among kids in high school today, who may have the calling to become a doctor or at least may have thought about it, what are they thinking of their prospects now? What can this new system offer them as an incentive to go into clinical medicine? Will Congress need to raise taxes to pay for medical education? I've heard it takes several years to repay school loans for med school — it's definitely not a cheap degree. There is a shortage of physicians now. Tell me how a socialized system will alleviate the shortage…

The new Doctors will be coming from foreign medical schools or will be FMGs (foreign medical graduates) who enter our residency programs. I saw the residency list for family practice for a program in New York state and all the residents were from various countries. There has been an explosion in the number of Medical sschools in the Caribbean – that only goes to show that there is a viable market. The US is the final destination.
If you aren't lucky enough to be treated by a doctor you can always be treated by a physician assistant or nurse practioner. If California is any example – this is what the future holds. They have extended the scope of practice of medicine to "health providers"

Fortunately I was aware of that happening. We home-schooled our children and when they went off to college, two of them messed around with leftist ideals for about two years and the youngest never did…she is a tried and true conservative. They are all three conservatives now thankfully. Hopefully your son will reemerge to his foundation. ;^) Hang in there and gently ask questions that poke holes in his arguments…

That was the Premier of Newfoundland. He apparently made out like a bandit when his small cable company was bought out by one of the majors, so he has the means to be able to afford to pay cash for his treatment.
What is sickening about that is that, as a political leader, he presides over a system that prevents his constituents from doing what he just did.

I, too am in Canada. My wife is currently undergoing tests to determine if she has cancer. The three-four week delays between doctor/specialist consultations is killing us. We would rather know quickly one way or the other so we can get on with our lives (or treatment.)

Kind of like how the statistics for smoking related illnesses are compiled; if you fall asleep with a smoke and your house burns down and you are burned to a crisp, apparently it is listed as a smoking related death (on par with lung cancer, emphasema, etc).
As a Canadian down there, perhaps you can tell me how my story compares with the experience one would have in the USA. A friend of mine was feeling out of sorts recently and her doctor told her that she might have cancer (that would have been late Feb). She was given another appointment for last week, and apparently it isn't as bad as first thought; she now has another appointment in a couple weeks to see how things are going.
I have no idea whether this qualifies as normal treatment or whether it constitutes the dreaded waiting list phenomenon.

Also, if someone dies in a car wreck, suicide, any death and they don't have health insurance, they count that as someone died BECAUSE they didn't have health insurance.
Your final sentence is what I am most concerned about, not only medically but also economically in general. As the Canadian health care system has only been able to survive thanks the the US being a safety valve, so does the Canadian economy owe its well being to having the largest market in the world right next door (which is why Trudeau switched us to metric–why use the same system of measurement as your largest trading partner when you can use the system used by socialist Europe….)..
I have long thought that if it weren't for the US being right next door, Canada would be a lot more like Europe, with a lot fewer of the consumer products available, products that seem like they are just normal thanks to the existence and innovation of the US.
With BO in the WH, if the US economy continues to tank, we Canadians can't help but be dragged down, too. There are not enough expletives to adequately express my thoughts about that scumbag.

Those of us who researched him and came up against wall after wall of silence knew what he was about. All you had to do was look at his affiliations. The info was always out there. I even had a doctor friend in Canada call and ask why Americans would even think about voting for this person that our MSM had already elected president, back in mid-2008.
I see nothing wrong in his intent. I see it as the free market at work. Also, there is nothing stopping his constituents from doing the same thing.

That is the point always made by my second favorite radio host, Jason Lewis from Minneapolis. He says that if young people would be able to buy a cafeteria style policy, one which covers catastrophic bills but leaves the small things (physicals, etc) to the individual to pay for, and if they kept paying the premiums, there is no way that they could end up without coverage.
I don't know the exact dollar figures of US health care insurance premiums now, but Jason says that if the market was opened up so that the individual owned the policy and could buy across state lines and was allowed to buy a cafeteria style plan, you would be able to buy insurance for $150 or $200 a month.
He has had a few callers to his show complain about "the high cost of health insurance," at which point he asks them how much they spend on cell phones, or movies, or video games, or their big screen tv, etc etc. People have enough money to buy those things but don't think that they should have to pay for health insurance…..
His proposal also seems to take care of the pre existing condition problem: the point of insurance is to buy it when you are young and don't need it, so that you are covered if you ever do get diabetes or are hit by a car. You can't go get insurance after the car accident (which could be considered to be your car's pre existing condition, lol), so why should you be able to get covered after never buying their product before the condition happened?

third world country? I don't know if you have ever visited a third world country, but developing nations usually lack strong institutions like we have in America – of which they are striving to get. You realize that nearly all advanced nations have universal coverage and they pay less for healthcare while receiving better quality . (America is rated 37th of quality of healthcare by World Health Organization).
I believe those deficit figures you cite should read "billion" instead of million. A 230 million dollar increase in the defecit – that's like breaking even by government counting.

Not sure where you get your information about 'paying less'. We lived in England for 8 years. The people there do have nationalized health care. For the everyday things its not bad. Any thing serious, or out of the norm, you wait YEARS to see a specialist. Then years for necessary surgery. Their paychecks lose about 50% for taxes and health care weekly. There isn't a choice, people who work pay BIG taxes. These people PRAY for private health insurance benefits because the government run stuff is so bad. Don't be so quick to trash what we 'had'. Regardless, we still had freedom to choose.
the reason Pres Obama worked on getting the healthcare bill passed before working on a jobs bill was so he could get as many Americans on government healthcare before they got a job and could afford their own healthcare…all in a design for single-payer healthcare.

Thank you for your article Dr. George! I know it looks bad now but if you and we keep shining the light on the truth of this bill AND telling our friends and family, this will not stand! Facebook, Twitter, dinner table, soccer field, whatever don't shy away. Especially the college age crowd. Out of love, seriously, we can't let this disaster happen to them so we've got to talk to them right now. Just have them read Dr. George's article for starters – they'll believe her! Keep the information flowing, that's our mission, moms!
America is rated low by the idiotic WHO because they actually give better scores to countries who have more people die then less. They think it is better to have both a rice person and a poor person die from a disease than for just one of them. That way everything is "equalized" which is better, in their opinion. They also let other countries underreport the infant mortality rate by not recognizing infants as born alive if they die within the first week – the US counts them ALL. And the US is better able to deliver babies that would die in utero in other countires. If third world health care is so great, why do those in other countries, who have the means, ALWAYS come to the US for their health care instead of using their own country's? Why did one of Canada's PMs come here recently for a procedure instead of staying in his own country? Because third world health care SUCKS!
