Free Birth Control: One Small Step for Feminists; One Giant Attack on the Consumer’s Pocketbook
by Danielle SaulEarlier this week the Obama administration announced that health insurance plans must now be extended to include birth control without copay. These new guidelines for women’s health also include breast pumps, regular “well woman” visits, counseling about HIV and sexually transmitted infections, screening for gestational diabetes, domestic violence counseling and screening, in addition to several other services. For the most part, these new requirements will take effect Jan. 1, 2013.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said, “These historic guidelines are based on science and existing (medical) literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need”.
However a recent Fox News article states “generic versions of the pill are available for as little as $9 a month. Still, about half of all pregnancies are unplanned. Many are among women using some form of contraception, and forgetting to take the pill is a major reason.” This shows that even if we offer them free birth control, we have no guarantee they will not get pregnant.
Who will pay to offset the cost of these new “free” services? We all know that nothing is truly free. The rest of us will be forced to pay for these services and premiums all over will be increased. In a Bloomberg editorial they admitted, “The average yearly cost to an insurer of providing full coverage for the entire range of contraceptive methods and counseling services (with no copays or deductibles) is about $40”.
As a young woman I believe these services should not become subsidized especially when the generic brand is easily accessible. We are 14 trillion in debt; there is no more money in order to cover all of these services. It is not a lack of access or information; they already have birth control and choose not to use it. We have an accountability issue not accessibility issues. If you choose to be sexually active then you are responsible for preventing a pregnancy, not the rest of us. These are goods and services, not a civil right. Do we really want the government micromanaging something as personal and private as pregnancies?

I'd agree to pay their birth control as long as IF they happen to get pregnant and unmarried, they are on their own. ALL single women know if they are unmarried the government/taxpayers will foot the bill all the way up to college graduation, if that would happen. Most of them live with the "baby daddy" so they can collect benefits while the father spends his times impregnanting other, at taxpayer expense. I'll rather pay the pills than pay for a kid for 21-26 yrs.

The entire birth control program by China was essentially a eugenics program against females. IF you're going to forcibly control population you MUST reduce the number of females in the population, NOT the number of males. One male can sire literally hundreds of children over his lifetime so even a 90% decrease in males would still allow a population to grow. Women, on the other hand, can only sire a few children (maybe 3 or the 14 with octomom) over their lifetime. So a 90% reduction in the female population would most likely doom a population to extinction.
So to control population size you'd have to selectively abort females or kill off female children which is EXACTLY what China did. How's that for progressives being the champions of women's rights.

This new regulation is the epitome of gratuitous. Contraceptives are available at every Planned Parenthood Clinc and County Health. Both on a sliding scale. Usually, they are available at the clinic where your child goes to school. Generally free there. So this regulation is designed to put more pressure on the system while shoring up the soccer mom vote. It ain't for the poor.

First off, population growth isnt the issue and controlling population is inhumane, since that is what communist dictators do such as Mao, Hitler, and so on.
Second, its not the government jobs to give away anything for free at which a citizen can buy themselves. When the government does that, it ruins the market as it sets forth a major inbalance.
Third, cutting off funding to PP has absolutely no connection to the downgrade in the economy. The downgrade happened because the government has vastly overspent itself and the government is hurting our economy more and more as they continue to spend.

But the Tea Party sees themselves as guardians of the Consitutional Republic, the only ones who really understand the Constitution and want to take our country back….to the 1950s, I guess. For being such Constitution lovers, I don't hear all the uproar about war powers, the Patriot Act, Domestic surveillance activities, Immigration Policy, torture…..none of this seems to offend the Tea Party enough for them/you to become outraged….it's always about “me keeping as much of my money as I can.” It' the Republican party on steroids….nothing more.Of course, the inevitable “don't work if you don't want to,” line suggesting, if not stating, that liberals are just trying to steal your money.
