ACORN Document Dump: Citibank Jeopardizes Customers for ACORN

When brokers and traders returned to work after the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average went on a wild rollercoaster ride dropping as much as 233 points during the trading session due to an announcement that Dubai would be rescheduling the repayment of $3.5 billion in bonds. This unexpected announcement was not what Wall Street wanted to hear on Black Friday when retail sales were already down by 8% compared to the prior year and Cyber Monday sales were less than robust with individual online purchases being 2% less than they were last year. All of this at a time when brokers, traders and economists across the country are watching to see if cash strapped consumers are going to bailout retailers from what is shaping up to be a dismal retail Christmas season.
It is understandable why Wall Street would be concerned about Dubai. Why would they be concerned about ACORN? On October 24, 2009, Biggovernment.com revealed that the San Diego office of ACORN dumped thousands of documents into a dumpster in advance of an investigation into the organizations activities by California Attorney General Jerry Brown. I retrieved the documents from a shared public dumpster located behind the local ACORN office. The documents that were retrieved filled the back of my Suburban. Much of what was retrieved was truly trash, items such as banana peels, coffee grounds and marketing materials. After sorting through the documents, though, the 20,000 documents that were retained included sensitive personal information, financial records and documents outlining the internal and political workings of ACORN. One of the documents obtained by Biggovernment.com shows that ACORN had business relationships with 28 major financial institutions for the purpose of assisting homeowners whose mortgages were in foreclosure.

Citigroup was one of the 28 financial institutions with which ACORN had a business relationship. ACORN operated a Citi Outreach program where employees of ACORN were provided personal information for Citigroup’s customers and would make contact with borrowers who fell behind on their mortgage payments. The objective of the program was to get homeowners to contact ACORN Housing Corporation (AHC). Testimony provided to members of two congressional committees, the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee and the House Judiciary Committee, revealed that ACORN used the Citi Outreach program, as well as a program operated on behalf of Bank of America, as a membership recruiting tool where homeowners where expected to pay monthly membership dues to ACORN prior to receiving assistance. Testimony provided by Anita MonCrief, a former ACORN employee turned whistle-blower, sated that ACORN had quotas for membership recruitment. Documents provided to Biggovernment.com show that regardless of whether the homeowner was assisted or not, ACORN was paid by Citigroup as long as a current phone number was obtained. The document also shows that ACORN employees were well aware of the need to keep these documents and records private due to state and federal privacy laws. The document reads, “People on this list have their privacy protected. Keep the lists private.”

The reason Wall Street lawyers and board rooms are concerned about ACORN beyond the current political and public relations drawbacks, ACORN’s actions of throwing sensitive private information into a public dumpster containing bank customer records begs the question, is a class action lawsuit in the offing? One document obtained by Biggovernment.com shows Citibank customers names, addresses and mortgage loan numbers were illegally disclosed, not to mention the very fact that these individuals are on this list reveals their credit worthiness since they are in a default status with regards to paying their mortgage loans.

Wall Street certainly has enough to worry about with a weak U.S. economy and uncertainty in global financial markets. But thanks to ACORN, there is now more to worry about. Citibank’s cavalier treatment of its customers sensitive, personal and financial information is potentially a serious breach of state and federal law. As the depth of the San Diego ACORN office data breach becomes more clear, Citigroup and possibly more banks, will have to prepare for the inevitable onslaught of low-income homeowners lining up to take advantage of what is truly to be a cash bonanza for the poor. Be assured that there will be many law firms willing to help “spread the wealth” to these economically disadvantaged individuals whose personal information was treated with careless disregard.

It's amazing to me that no one has jumped on this. With a full team of investigators, this entire treasure trove of illegally dumped information could have already been processed and lawsuits could be underway to do some serious damage to ACORN.
This will be the end of the ACORN/Citigroup relationship. All downstream handlers of the info are required to implement the same privacy policies that the original record holder has in place. Citigroup faces potential liability from this incident and will react quickly.

With Obama giving out ACORN designed cookies at the Congressional Whitehouse Christmas party, I think he sent the message that his administration not only supports ACORN but will be increasing its funding.
If the people whose information was dumped were made aware of this, they could file suit for their home loan to be paid off in a settlement. See how ACORN could be made to help!

So much was made of Obama's fundraising acumen, via small internet donations which required little disclosure. Interesting, also, is how high a priority the Obama administration has placed on paying Federal taxpayer funds to ACORN, even after Congress passed legislation barring same. Makes you wonder, then, if Federal funds, via ACORN, are being channelled to Obama's campaign over the internet, by ACORN minions using the names of people pilfered from their financial records and from their voter registration drives.

What are the chances this information will be widely spread to the public – other than those who watch Fox News and/or listen to conservative talk radio? Unless more Americans are made aware, the Dems will just avoid the situation. There still hasn't been a Congressional investigation into ACORN. Even if it does get out, Republicans will just be accused of frightening people – doesn't matter if what is happen IS frightening.
Perhaps Big Government could begin contacting these people, using these addresses and maybe the phone numbers, informing them of this breach of privacy, their rights, and how to proceed to seek damages from ACORN. We could set up a fund on this site to help defray the costs. We should do it as a true not-for-profit public service.

There was a great article yesterday about how the Democrats are fighting to get their palls in ACORN funded again. They don't care about ethics they just care about their agenda. This is why they were suppose to be under investigation and in court and those responsible should be in jail.

At a recent public event in NY, ACORN handed out crudely printed membership application forms to the attendees which included spaces for them to put in their bank account info, so ACORN could tap the accounts for membership fees. We just got a reply postcard from Wells Fargo asking us to vote on which CHARITY we prefer they give their money to, including: several County food banks, an Affordable Housing Developer (sounds a lot like ACORN, doesn’t it?), Junior Achievement, and Clinica de la raza.
WF says it will donate $25,000 to first place winner; $15,000 to 2nd place; $10,000 to third place; and all runner-ups will receive $5,000.
WHY are banks supporting “charities” such as these? Don’t they all more or less equate to ACORN???? Wouldn’t America fare better if the banks would, instead of HANDOUTS to these Acorn-affiliates, provide lower-cost loans to CREDIT-WORTHY APPLICANTS and provide a DECENT RETURN ON OUR MONEY INSTEAD OF LESS THAN ONE PERCENT ON OUR TERM CD ACCOUNTS????
Maybe Americans should start to pressure BANKS the way ACORN has done, so successfully, the past several decades ever since Carter days! Honest, hard-working bank customers deserve AT LEAST as much consideration as the FREELOADER/ACORNERS, don’t we?

Ideas that will work without violence will be NOT GOING TO WORK! Having enough supplies ahead to last atleast 2 weeks. No with holding from your paychecks to start out with. DO NOT send your children to school! I have no idea what the amount now is-BUT the states used to get atleast $6 a day per student. This is FEDERAL money these school districts depend on. No students=no need for teachers(NEA). It would take about 2 weeks before they would really be hurting. Stock market would drop. No products being made. Preferably started on a Holiday weekend, when people take trips out of town. It would affect airlines, bus stations, and gas stations. All of this done without VIOLENCE! Just passive resistance. I highly doubt the lazy democrats that depend on freebies would get off their fannie and work.

Politicians gave legitimacy to Acorn, which banks relied on in their dealings with Acorn. What could go wrong?
