And You Thought This Was All About Health Care…
by Doug O'BrienThe all-consuming debate over health care has effectively sucked all of the oxygen out of the policy world leaving little room for discussion, let alone action on other major elements of the progressive agenda—or so it would seem.
The mammoth bills winding their way through Congress will certainly upend our health care sector, if they are enacted. Little known, however, are several provisions that will provide an enormous pay-off to one of the Democrat parties most loyal constituency—Big Labor.

The Obama campaign spent much of 2008 writing checks to various left-leaning interest groups who saw the opportunity to cash in on long-standing priorities that would finally be achievable with a Democratic Congress and a liberal president. Now, these groups are finding that no one is available to cash these checks as long as the administration is laser focused on reconfiguring one sixth of the American economy.
But organized labor has sought to turn this situation into a new opportunity. By throwing themselves into the health care debate and mobilizing their resources behind passage of the Democrat proposal, labor has been rewarded with the ability to shape the content of the health care legislation and to begin to collect on its political debt.
Hot on the heels of the inauguration labor sought to cash its first big check and push the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) through Congress to eliminate the secret ballot for union organizing elections and allow strong arm tactics to “recruit” new members by putting a card in front of them and politely asking them to sign it. Poll numbers consistently showed strong opposition among the public to this idea and the administration quickly realized they couldn’t cover this check.
But there are always new ways to achieve your objectives when the President is your loyal supplicant. The Service Employees International Union provided an estimated $160 million to the Obama campaign and related political advocacy groups and put thousands of its paid organizers on the streets to stump for Democrats. SEIU’s top recruiting priority is unionizing hundreds of thousands of health care workers across the nation.
What better way to get a leg up on unionizing health care workers, (and further driving health care costs up in the process) than by sneaking a few precious policy advantages into federal law via the 1,000-page health care bill?
Among the SEIU sops in the bill are vast new funding mechanisms for home health care organizations. The union has focused on unionizing home health care workers and now the taxpayers will provide hundreds of millions each year to pay these new union members.
The bill also provides $10 billion in direct taxpayer subsidies to pay health care costs for retired union members. This foists the every increasing health care cost of no-longer productive members off on the treasury.
In addition, it sets up all sorts of government bodies to micro-manage the health care industry to the advantage of labor. These bodies will make regulations for the workplace, training and wage levels. They will also serve as “diversity panels” and will be empowered to seek appropriate participation in health care jobs for disadvantaged groups. Buried in Title II, Part 3, Subtitle D of the bill is the requirement that the HHS panel that will set standards for health care employment must have union (read SEIU, the biggest health industry union) representation.
The bill also ties big piles of grant money to unionization. In Title V, Subtitle D, which funds grants for nurse training, the bill limits eligibility for funding to employers that “provides wages and benefits to its nurses…that have been collectively bargain with a labor organization.”
These little set asides tucked away in the bill will strengthen SEIU’s hand by helping it unionize more of the health care workforce and provide billions in funding for those new union jobs. They also allow labor to infiltrate the regulatory process and push for further advantages.
So while health care “reform” is not the holy grail of labor legislation that EFCA is, it is certainly laden with abundant incentives for labor to promote its passage. And this doesn’t even consider the fact that SEIU and other unions also have supported the idea of a single-payer system which would magically transform legions of unionized health care workers into legions of unionized government health care workers—labor’s version of winning Powerball.
Then, after labor has rallied every resource it has—funded by member dues—to pass the President’s make-or-break initiative, how can he refuse it’s demand to make “card check” his next must-win proposal? In fact, incoming AFL-CIO chief Richard Trumka admitted as much on a blog where he wrote, “The President/and Emanuel have both said they dont (sic) intend to bring Employee Free Choice Act up until Health Insurance Reform is done. Which gives us an additional reason to do Health Insurance Reform now!”
The simple truth is that for the single biggest advocacy bloc pushing the health care bill, your health is the furthest thing from their mind. Their objective is to use the bill to make it easier to unionize health care workers, which certainly won’t enhance patient care, and to advance the larger goals of organized labor as a whole, and use the resulting debt from the administration to push through the noxious “card check” bill through despite public opposition.

The SEIU and unions-in-general connection with Obama, Obamacare and the overall socialization of the nation is no surprise. They have much to gain from this. There's a whole lotta power to be had.
There's a Marxist taproot feeding the whole cause, and this should concern any liberty loving American. There's a piece addressing this from a conservative Christian perspective entitled "Embrace the Marxist Rebellion? YES! WE! CAN!" Here's a link, for those who are interested: http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...
Congrats on the launch! Go get 'em!
Soli Deo gloria…and Let's Roll!
Rock on! Good to see this site up and running!
As a former member of a union (UFCW), I can tell you that if one of their rank and file were hurt on the job, they couldn't care less. When I got hurt on the job, I didn't hear from union leadership. But when my company orded me back to work, and I went to my union reps for help, their first question was "do you know you owe us three months back dues?"
"Oh, sorry! I was nursing a wreched back for the last three months. Waiting for you guys to help me out. Silly me!" Then the next day I quit the job and the union. That was in 1993. Then I realized that many unions aren't worth the paper their charters were founded on.
There are some good unions. The railworkers union supported my uncle when it was revealed that he had cancer, so there are some good ones. Just the good reside in the rank and file, generally not leadership.
Great site so far. I hope this article catches fire because it absolutely fired me up!!! How dare they use my tax dollars to bail out the unions insolvent insurance funds. I am so tired of this secret crap being thrown in. You never know what's being done with the Left hand when you're focused on other things. I am thoroughly convinced that Obama is a fraud 100%. This is disgusting. Keep up the good reporting.
Why do retired union members get health insurance benefits? Isn't the Medicare the rest of us peasants will receive good enough for them?
Oh yeah, lots of unions have deals where the members can retire long before they hit Medicare eligibility. And at the rate things are going, I may have to wait until 70 or later before I get Social Security? And I am the one who will make their retirement more comfortable? I think not!
YIPPEE! I wanted to do back flips when I read this!!!!! Finally, the connection to Big Labor is out there. The Dems have very successfully played the old game of smoke and mirrors, focusing the discussion on "the public option". They're really good at that – distracting the detractors. While everyone is focused on that one aspect, they are smugly tucking away all kinds of provisions to help their friends, the unions. As if the bailout of the UAW wasn't enough!
One more way that the proposed bill (I know, what bill?) will aid unions is – HOW MANY TENS OF THOUSAND OF NEW GOVERNMENT WORKERS WILL WE HAVE TO HIRE TO ADMINISTER THIS MESS?! Add up those legacy costs and you can triple/quadruple the cost of this bill!
Sorry to tell you this, but you already are the one who "makes their retirement more comfortable!" The auto bailout took care of the UAW health plan (for the moment). I believe there are plans for a lot more government "donations". I did a little checking on their plan. It isn't easy. I could not find out if the retiree pays part of the premium and, if so, how much? I could not find out anything about co-pays or deductibles. Anyone have information on this?
Did you know auto workers and their retirees get health care, dental, vision and hearing insurance FOR LIFE. That includes their dependents. There was no way Chrysler or GM could sustain those kinds of benefits. So, voila, the government had to do it for them! No way they would be expected to consider adjustments to the benefits.
If they had real reform in mind it would probably take 10 pages to spell it out. Instead it is 1000 pages of payoffs to unions, the affirmative action crowd, the immigration crowd and every other power-grabbing constituent of the left wing in this country.
Thank you 900 billion times! for bringing all this to light. When I read the bill a few weeks ago, that $10 billion union retiree bailout jumped out at me. I spend 3 weeks calling, writing, trying to get someone to "publicize" it. Now it's starting to get some traction. (We know the $10b is just the beginning…) Why should I pay for some 55 yr old former auto worker who's now retired to Florida with better health benefits than I'll ever get?!
As I read it, I also noted down the number of times agencies or task forces or other administrative bodies were required to have union representatives on their boards. And, lastly, I counted 47 NEW government agencies and wanted to know how many new gov't workers this would add to the bureaucratariat. I called all over Washington but NO ONE could tell me. Finally, someone admitted to me that they hadn't calculated that cost yet, so it's not even included in the bloated cost Obama cites.
I don't want to pay for union retirees. I don't want my health care workers unionized. I don't want union reps sitting on government boards. I don't want hundreds of thousands of new government (union) workers.
Great start. I look forward to checking in with your blog EVERY DAY!
Heard about this launch yesterday on Roger Hedgecock show. Thanks for being there. This first edition should light up Internet. Hopefully, your exposure of the EVIL union connection, may bring down Obama's house of cards.
I was in the Teamsters union 20 some years ago so things might have changed but at the time we paid nothing towards the medical or retirement benefits. It was all paid for by the employer as per the contract. The few times I used the medical plan I paid no co-pay. I didn't have enough time vested to qualify for the retirement, I think you needed at least 8 years, I only had 7. When you don't contribute to your pension fund, as in this case, I believe it is taxable when you retire. So they don't get off scott free at least.
In a number of countries, Richard Trumka would be on the Most Wanted List …and that wouldn't be the politicians' list for donations but the security forces' list for graft, embezzlement and coercion. America's press sticks a microphone in this guy's face where it's the other end of his torso that should be stuck in a jail cell.
Big unions have never made anything more efficient; just the opposite in fact. A great first post for Big Government!
Healthcare has nothing to do with healthcare, and everything to do with power. If we allow this monstrosity to get through our health will be the last thing on Washington’s mind. Barry, and big labor are like peas and carrots, you find one you’ll find the other. Contact your Reps. in congress regularly and often.
Doug,
If you're reading these comments, take a look at this little noticed item in Federal Times:
http://www.federaltimes.com/index.php?S=4265826
The Post Office is spending $1 million a WEEK paying workers NOT TO WORK. Just another great union benefit.
Most maddening…Obama plans to hire tens of thousands of NEW gov't workers while paying these to sit in a room napping or doing nothing.
Right up your alley.

What do Big Government and Big Union have in common? They both spend other peoples money, inefficiently.
"I don't want to pay for union retirees. I don't want my health care workers unionized. I don't want union reps sitting on government boards. I don't want hundreds of thousands of new government (union) workers."
England's NHS is the world's third largest employer. Obama and his fellow travelers will make them look like pikers.
I am an RN in California. There has been much written about the acrimony between SEIU and the California Nurses Association. What I find interesting (and distressing) is nurses at Kaiser rah-rah-ing the health care bill and not realizing what they are endorsing. What do they think will happen to their jobs/wages/benefits if this bill passes? Kaiser is a FOR PROFIT organization.

This is going to mean forced unionization of nurses and doctors. I'm a nurse and I will NOT join a union. I'll quit working first and that's a fact.

HR 3200 has a specific clause exempting 'collective bargaining units' from any requirement to participate in
any facet of the health reform package.
The problem is that five decades of leftist propaganda and deChristianizing America works better than all the logic, facts, and scary reality out there. They simple have made up their Kool-aid driven minds and talking is a waste of time. Only the actual taste of the poison the seek might alter their numbed condition. Hopefully we wont have to go through the slaughter of our own that the Soviet Union went through, before we take the left's presently erected wall apart.
You guys are going to make Nancy Botox Pelosi very mad and take that smile off her face. WAY TO GO!
Shine The Light Bright!
I’m afraid what is happening with the Senate Finance Committee bill is much more nefarious than anyone would be lead to believe. Republican politicians call it a “public-private partnership” between big insurance and the federal government. But what is the reality? It is an entity best described as a government maintained insurance cartel.
The Nightmare That Is The Senate Finance Committee Healthcare Proposal – RINOCare Gone Wild (http://tinyurl.com/ltf66q)
I can say with absolute conviction that what we are about to see coming out of the Senate is everything a public option would give you – rationing, loss of medical liberties, the whole nine yards. It now becomes a question of who is driving the bus – the government or government maintained insurance cartels. I would argue that neither option is desirable.
It all depends on whether you are talking about government controlled socialized medicine or government controlled fascist medicine. I do not use the word fascist in a demeaning way, but use it as a descriptive adjective that fits its definition – that of an authoritarian nationalist political ideology and a corporatist economic ideology.
Both extremes do nothing to address the real problems, but the fascist solution has a real chance of passing the Senate due to its bi-partisan appeal. As I state in the article, it was very telling that lobbyists received a copy of the committee bill before the administration.
Conservative, liberal, or independent – if you think you have a ally in Congress, chances are you are wrong. Your opinion counts last in the political calculus of politicians within the beltway. That is, until your voice is heard.
No to the government and no to big business. Does that not address the grievances of both sides? Time to scrap this bill and start over. There are real solutions that don’t drive the deficit to more dizzying heights, regulate big insurance, and drive down costs with free market competition and tort reform. Ideologues need not apply. It’s time for the pragmatic adults to step in and the children to nap.
The timing is great! Now make sure all the special interest groups (Labor unions, lawyers, teacher unions, etc) benefits are shown next to the President's speech.
Congratulations on your new site.
This involvement by SEIU in the Obama “healthcare plan” should be made more highly known to the public. The motive to get American taxpayers to fund increasing union early-retirees’ expenses weighs heavily on the Obama Administration and, unfortunately, the sneakiness of this motive has been suppressed among the American public by the Obama Administration.
Same way they LIE about “doctors and nurses supporting this plan” (Obama’s Plan) — utter lie — it’s ghastly to what extent the Obama Admin. IS lying.

your comment seems to have zero to do with my point, but hey, who cares?
Stan, our first useless troll. Looks like he has no intellect, though.
I can only think the good folks at Big Government have invented drizz just to give us an esy division 3 troll to laugh at the first day don't you?.
I'm a healthcare worker, too. And I'll also quit before I join a union. What if, somehow, we could get all healthcare workers to say they'll quit before they join a union/pass this healthcare act? How can we get unified and let the country know what we are standing for?
The Democrat Party is a criminal enterprise.
No worries Jed. You know you’re over the target when you receive flak.
Hear, hear!
No question!
You answered my Question!!! I kept wondering "why are Unions demanding single payer?" Afterall, most Union members have Cadillac Coverage negotiated by the Union Bosses on threat of strike or work slow-downs. I kept googling the issue and searching the web, but didn't see the connection… till this article! Now I know… Obamacare would swell Union membership, shove ballooning Union health care costs on the rest of us (via single payer), and give them more power to force private businesses into the union trap. Way to go Breitbart!

You are Right on! I hate unions and what they’ve done to this great country. I hate unions and the way they put some great corporations out of business. I hate unions, look what they did to Enron to put that great company out of business. The unions forced Ken Lay to lie and steal. Damn unions. I hate unions and what they did to Wall Street. The unions put Lehman Brothers and Merril Lynch out of business by forcing them to take part in dangerous business practices. And don’t get me started on the police and firemen’s unions. Do you know some of those firemen and cops husbands and wives from 9/11 are still receiving their spouse’s pensions because of damn unions. Something needs to be done to save the USA. I want my country back…………………………………
THANK YOU! Finally someone mentioning the incredible windfall about to be bestowed upon Big Labor by this "Health Care Reform."
UAW also stands to make out like a bandit. Remember how the union assumed retiree health benefits from GM? Then they got the bulk of the reconstituted company out of bankruptcy to make up for it. Now government will take care of that burden for them.
Great piece. Keep them coming.
I totally agree. Who knows how bad this economy would be without the huge growth in income taxes and employment from the steel industry, Big Three autos and the airline industry.
I can see you are a right wing nut, no one on the left would care about jobs on Wall Street. It is good to know that it is the "damn unions" that are paying cops pensions. So, what do you think Bloomberg is doing with the taxes he's collecting?
I DON'T WANT TO JOIN A UNION EVER!!!!
If the Lib's keep pushing, I feel there's a strong chance of us all witnessing a 21st century civil war. Citizens will take so much before they break. I feel that point is close at hand.
Great new place to read about what is really going on in Washington…like we didn't know already. Thanks for the outlet.
But yet they have seats at the table that will have oversight.
Looks like that "hope & change" thing is working out just fine for unions.
Dido…great start..keep up the good work!
Why did Rep. Wilson apologize? Doesn't he know that Obama is the apologiser in chief?
Great site!
The stupid is strong on the Right. Why, pray tell, is the Right so often wrong?
Ok I did watch Obama last night and If His Health Plan Is So Good!!! Why, why is Congress Exempt from it!!! And why don’t congress give up there health plan and make one that would be Good for All. If that was the case I Would bet all I have that the Health Plan Would Get Fixed.

glad to see this exposed somewhere. I know we won't see it out on the overair broadcast TV, but maybe we can get it out on cable and elsewhere. Would be nice if this is out front in Washingon at Saturday's protest.
As a physician, I've often joked that maybe we need to unionize if we have government run health care so we can be immune from lawsuits. Somehow though I don't think we'd get the same carve outs that SEIU and others will get out of HR3200. The level of graft in this administration is impressive. Obama was right when he said it wasn't going to be politics as usual in Washington. It is Chicago-style politics on steroids.
The whole health plan is nothing but a scam to build a a bigger plantation, the poor, the bureaucracy and the unions, from which to harvest democratic votes.
Doug O'Brien nailed it……good job and you have the experience to back you up. "Government RUN" Health Care is nothing more than a power grab. Medicare and Medicaid are going broke and have unrelenting waste and fraud…these are already government run…we don't need more of the same. What we do need is tort reform and state to state competition of health insurance which would go a long way to improving the cost of health care.
I fear you are right that we could be "witnessing a 21st century civil war." I think this is exactly what the current administration is moving us towards. God Help Us!!!!
BEWARE POSTERS! LIBERALS are deliberately posting thumbs down, go back and give a thumbs up…I DID
Karl Marxs' final entry in the Communist Manifesto is "Working men Unite"! Obongo Hussein wants the big payoff from union pensions should he get healthcare workers to start paying up a part of their check to thug like union bosses. Well, healthcare workers are not blue collar tradesmen or truckers. They are educated and well trained and get paid very well for their critical occupations. Obama has no right to force unionization. This is America, not AmeriKa….yet.
Thank you for being a complete asshole!
The funny thing is there is no "Title II, Part 3, Subtitle D" or "Title V, Subtitle D" that the author cites in support of his article. Did he make up those claims?
I am a physician in private practice (Hematology-Medical Oncology) and have grave concerns about how government managed health-care will negatively impact new drug and device developments. In fact, the FDA within the past year will no longer approve oncology drugs that are equally effective as existing drugs – the drugs have to be better than existing drugs….this eliminates options to physicians and patients regarding use of effective treatments while reducing side effects.
I invite all to read my essays regarding health reform (from a physician perspective) and to respond:

Work on the ecomony.
Get people working so they can afford health insurance and deport the illegals .Then there would be very few uninsured. Leave medicare alone.

The reason that there is a middle class in America is because of those stinking union commie bastards! Bah, poor people, next thing you know they will want to vote…wait…what?
Basic question. Why completely overhaul healthcare for 16% of the US population? 300 Million population 47 Million with no healthcare. I've had private healthcare insurance for 30 years, ever since I flipped burgers through college. It's available, it's affordable if you look for it instead of gimme gimme.
No! Do not fix Medicare, get rid of it!
The tactic I see is subversion to truth, as a cover to outright lying. The common thread in this thousand page monstrosity is what the voting elites ignore today since they obviously do not understand it, and didn't write it, and do not plan to read it before enacting it. Does this remind anyone in how they treat the likes of the Constitutions as a living-breathing document to be "interpreted" by the judicial branch? How can something be labeled misinformation and distortions if it has yet to be run though any litmus test for all scenarios? Illegal’s not covered? There is no provision to determine that status and some language preventing the intrusion. When the bipartisan debate is closed to the oppositions ideas and amendments declined, let the bickering begin LOUDER!
Part II
As part of the speech, I took notice of the line; “This is how large companies and government employees get affordable insurance. It's how everyone in this Congress gets affordable insurance. And it's time to give every American the same opportunity that we've given ourselves.”
Then why not throw out the thousand page bill and hand over your insurance policy options without all the free for all filler kicks back to your SEIU supporters that more than likely wrote this monstrosity? Someone thought it wise to make Government Elites exempt from this bills reach. More arrogant servings of Kobe Beef with a side of “Let them eat cake” mentality no doubt?
Our Constitution by its very nature does not permit a social democracy (socialism). If D.C. can selectively ignore certain parts of the Constitution, then the people can ignore the 16th Amendment. We either have the rule of law or no rules at all.
I hate unions too. That is why I am trying to have the name of this country changed from the United States ( which means a union of states), to the Confederate States of America ( a loosely aligned every man for himself type of country). I want my country back. Please support me in this cause, so we can all be divided as a country, and come together against these libs. A constitutional amendment to rename the country to the good old CSA. Long live conservatives. There’s no change like no change. I want my country back………………………………………………….
And when the hospitals start failing and clinics are closing because the government is not paying the bills with or for or via the new insurance plan, then who will run the hospitals and keep the staff of medical professionals around? The government? They could not run what should have been a straight forward program called “Cash for Clunkers”, how on earth will the run thousands of financially strapped medical facilities? More taxes, or course. The passing of some sort of health care plan is but one small element with un-intended consequences. Look down the road a little. Who would want to go into any medical profession? It is very difficult to not think that perhaps the desired end-state is a government run health provider strategy – end to end.
Congrats on a successful launch… adding to my frequent reads.

Where does the bill talk about "The bill also provides $10 billion in direct taxpayer subsidies to pay health care costs for retired union members." I couldn't find it.
Please note my comments as a retired surgeon written in Dec. 2008 on
http://www.davids-home-now.blogspot.com
I'm new to political involvement and I have a genuine question that maybe someone can help with: I seem to recall two government-sponsored (?) -funded (?) health care plans. One is Medicare for seniors and the other is Medicaid for those on government assistance. Right so far?
I also understand that many, many uninsured Americans don't qualify for either program, either because they're the wrong age or make "too much" money. My husband and I are self-employed and have been holding our breath for the past three months to see whether we can pay our $1000 for health insurance (no covered pre-existing conditions, see the dr maybe once every 1-2 years) or if this is the month we have to drop it entirely and go without.
It seems to me that Congress' time would be better spent focusing on reforming the already-existing programs and expanding them to include more folks in the working class and underemployed middle-class. Drop the whole campaign against tort reform, against insurance companies, against doctors, against unionizing the entire healthcare industry. Then if that works out, perhaps they can be trusted to do a little more. I, for one, want to have a choice whether to sign up for government healthcare, which would likely have "all the efficiency of the Post Office, all the cost-effectiveness of the Pentagon, and all the compassion of the IRS." Am I right?
Why does Obama need a thousand pages of new legislation to get rid of fraud and waste in Healthcare? Aren't there laws already on the books against fraud and waste? Does any rational thinking human being not see what is being done here?
thanx for posting this. i did not know about gov't agencies, unions, etc. where would i b able to find a copy of this bill, either online or a hard copy?
This site should start a category on government workplaces, corruption, violence, theft, for democrates, by democrates. All funded by tax $ generated by hard working citizens, stolen by big govt., redistributed to liberal politically correct democrates. I would venture to say about 80% of govt employees are democrats,if you look at the leadership I'm saying about 99%.
Prayers for the kids that did the video
Healthcare and distribution of hundreds of billions of taxpayer $$$$$$$ with verbage that says there will be no authority for administrative or judicial reveiws allowed. What ever happened to "checks and balances"? I learned this basic goverment organization in 8th grade goverment class. Secondly, what is the back up funding if the expected funding fails to materialize; if the administrationis not going to raise taxes on the middle class
Obama claims reducing increases in healthcare costs by 0.1% will "reduce the deficit by 4 trillion dollars in the long term". Fact is, this reduction, approximately $200 million/year, would reduce the deficit by that amount in about 2000 years!
Obama claims 30 million are without health insurance, down from recent prior claims of 47 million. At this rate, all will be insured by the end of the year without any healthcare legislation!
I appreciate all view points however something needs to be done with our healthcare system is all I know. People should all have the right to affordable healthcare and we need to do something to par back the love of greed in our society.
My head is spinning! Mama mia! Will it NEVER end!?

It is called "reinsurance". Now, the administration would say that it isn't just unions. It is for any company that qualifies. Now, tell me this, how many private sector workers retire between 55 and 65 and get to keep their company health care plan. You may find a few, but the bulk of those who fit the criteria would be union retirees.
First, we should give the private insurance companies a chance by opening up free enterprise across state lines. Let the market work. Adopt meaningful torte reform. Expand Medicare. But the most insulting part of this bill is its disguise as a health care bill. It is a union jobs bill. Why else would the unions all be backing it, when their members won't even be required to go on it. They keep their gold-plated plans and taxpayers pay for that too.
The question is…. what are the democrats pretending not to know? ( Their plan will give the government control and then proceed to wreck the economy. ..) I would be ashamed to do this to the american people who have placed their trust in me as president. Does Obama care about the american people enough to be honest??

Same thing, but for different reasons, is happening with school teachers in New York City because of union rules.
