Five Things We Should Worry about in 2011
by Dan MitchellThe mid-term elections were a rejection of President Obama’s big-government agenda, but those results don’t necessarily mean better policy. We should not forget, after all, that Democrats rammed through Obamacare even after losing the special election to replace Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts (much to my dismay, my prediction from last January was correct).
Similarly, GOP control of the House of Representatives does not automatically mean less government and more freedom. Heck, it doesn’t even guarantee that things won’t continue to move in the wrong direction. Here are five possible bad policies for 2011, most of which the Obama White House can implement by using executive power.
1. A back-door bailout of the states from the Federal Reserve – The new GOP Congress presumably wouldn’t be foolish enough to bail out profligate states such as California and Illinois, but that does not mean the battle is won. Ben Bernanke already has demonstrated that he is willing to curry favor with the White House by debasing the value of the dollar, so what’s to stop him from engineering a back-door bailout by having the Federal Reserve buy state bonds? The European Central Bank already is using this tactic to bail out Europe’s welfare states, so a precedent already exists for this type of misguided policy. To make matters worse, there’s nothing Congress can do – barring legislation that Obama presumably would veto – to stop the Fed from this awful policy.
2. A front-door bailout of Europe by the United States – Welfare states in Europe are teetering on the edge of insolvency. Decades of big government have crippled economic growth and generated mountains of debt. Ireland and Greece already have been bailed out, and Portugal and Spain are probably next on the list, to be followed by countries such as Italy and Belgium. So why should American taxpayers worry about European bailouts? The unfortunate answer is that American taxpayers will pick up a big chunk of the tab if the International Monetary Fund is involved. Indeed, this horse already has escaped the barn. The United States provides the largest amount of subsidies to the International Monetary Fund, and the IMF took part in the bailouts of Greece and Ireland. The Senate did vote against having American taxpayers take part in the bailout of Greece, but that turned out to be a symbolic exercise. Sadly, that’s probably what we can expect if and when there are bailouts of the bigger European welfare states.
3. Republicans getting duped by Obama and supporting a VAT – The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Obama Administration is contemplating a reduction in the corporate income tax. This sounds like a great idea, particularly since America’s punitive corporate tax rate is undermining competitiveness and hindering job creation. But what happens if Obama demands that Congress approve a value-added tax to “pay for” the lower corporate tax rate? This would be a terrible deal, sort of like a football team trading a great young quarterback for a 35-year old lineman. The VAT would give statists a money machine that they need to turn the United States into a French-style welfare state. This type of national sales tax would only be acceptable if the personal and corporate income taxes were abolished – and the Constitution was amended to make sure the federal government never again could tax what we earn and produce. But that’s not the deal Obama would offer. My fingers are crossed that Obama doesn’t offer to swap a lower corporate income tax for a VAT, particularly since we already know that some Republicans are susceptible to the VAT.
4. Regulatory imposition of global warming policy – This actually is an issue we needed to start worrying about before this year. The Obama Administration already is in the process of trying to use regulatory edicts to impose Kyoto-style restrictions on energy use, and 2011 may be a pivotal year for this issue. This issue is troubling because of the potential impact on economic growth, but it also represents an assault on the rule of law since the White House and the Environmental Protection Agency are engaging in regulatory overreach because they did not have enough support to get so-called climate change legislation through Congress. The new GOP majority presumably will try to use the “power of the purse” to limit the EPA’s power grab, and the outcome of that fight could have dramatic implications for job creation and competitiveness.
5. U.N. control of the Internet – The Federal Communications Commission just engaged in an unprecedented power grab as part of its “Net Neutrality” initiative, so we already have bad news for both Internet consumers and America’s telecommunications industry. But it may get worse. The bureaucrats at the United Nations, conspiring with autocratic governments, have created an Internet Governance Forum in hopes of grabbing power over the online world. This has caused considerable angst, leading Vint Cerf, one of inventors of the Internet (sorry, Al Gore) to warn: “We don’t believe governments should be allowed to grant themselves a monopoly on Internet governance. The current bottoms-up, open approach works — protecting users from vested interests and enabling rapid innovation. Let’s fight to keep it that way.” International bureaucracies are very skilled at incrementally increasing their authority, so this won’t be a one-year fight. Stopping this power grab will require persistent oversight and a willingness to reject compromises that inevitably give bureaucracies more power and simply set the stage for further demands.

All of the above are un-Constitutional (with the exception of the VAT, maybe) and whom ever treads there best be careful of the wrath of the American people!
If the Republicans vote for a VAT, there will be consequences.
I don't know why a bunch of these companies don't just tell the USGov (and the UN next) – NO we aren't going to follow your Un-Constitutional edict. Let Holder "try" and take them to court – and then we can get all the nasty, dirty behind the scenes bribes and payoffs out in the OPEN and show the Koolaid drinkers what's really happening (that they NEVER believe because there is no "proof").
All they have to do is whip out the Constitution and say where is it in there that says the Gubment can do that. And whe Holder tries to bring up this or that "precedent", SLAM them with the Constitution AGAIN saying – no, that's NOT in the Constitution, it doesn't MATTER what some "other" judge ruled, the Constitution IS the top law of the land – not a judge.
It would also even more-so expose the LameStreamMedia and show even the Koolaid drinkers their bias. Teaching the Sheeple is much better than just "presenting" facts that they won't believe.
If the GOP supports a VAT, then they're OUT.
We are so screwed.
The republican's are Charlie Brown and here comes Lucy (dem's) with a football to kick…..
Expect them to get duped into doing something stupid.
all of these are sage concerns…
And the Progressives intend to inact ALL of them no matter how, or what, they need to twist, bend, or outright deceive in order to achieve desired outcome. The GOP House can do some harm to this- funding problems, mostly-
but, for example, the EPA is funded THROUGH 2012; they saw this coming and took care of Carol Browner and co.
already.
The Fed is the stooge of the International Concerns. If they want the states bailed out, Bernancke will sing and dance to their tune. Considering their desire for One World Government it seems the bailouts a fait accompli'.
The citizens of California seem confident that THEY will not have to pay for their very comfortable lifestyles. The elections of the Progressives indicate their selfishness. Same with New York, and Illinois.
They KNOW help is coming. The question is can we stop it? Our take: unlikely at best…
I would only be for a VAT if it completely replaced the current income tax system. VAT+income taxes? The only thing THAT would achieve, especially in this climate, ESPECIALLY IF REPUBLICANS supported it would be armed rebellion.
If it becomes clear that the will of the people will be ignored no matter WHO you vote for what else would be left?
The new TEA Party House needs to start reigning in the Fed. No more blank checks. No more printing funny money.
Can Congress impeach the Fed chair?
A bail out of Europe would result in politicians hanging from lamposts soon there after.
We can overcome these concerns one by one. We have a new Congress. We have new oversignt committees, and even with their shortcomings they will cause change for the better!
We have clear targets and culprits. Ready, aim………This will be our BEST year yet!
Ultimately, Dave, that is EXACTLY what will have to happen. Add to that wave We the People, when we can, and we may regain control of this great country. The Constitution we be ultimately be our savior. Very well said Dave!
No we're not Mono! Have faith. We are stronger than ever! Yes it will be a fight in D.C. but we have amazing warriors there now!
As long as we are armed with the United States Constitution!
The UN is now one of the most dangerous entities on earth. It is Soros's shadow government and will backdoor everything here in the USA completely and totally with Obama's support.
They desperately need to control the information flow……………net neuter will be their priority. If we allow this, we are done.
I fear we have gone beyond the tipping point now. Unfortunately, there is no reset button we can push.
If all of that agenda is even ATTEMPTED much less actually achieved the National Socialist Democrat Party can forget EVER winning majorities (except in the Northeast and California) in their lifetimes again.
The problem is that the Dems know this and are setting in place an infrastructure where they retain power even when they LOSE elections…
As for the UN, I'd love to see Congress refuse to fund our dues.
Those items are probably on every progressive wish-list, hoping obama-clause will deliver.
*gag*
This reminds me of the old adage. "Know thy enemy and he is thine" – We did not have a clue how bad obama and his communist connections were. BUT now we do!
So our goals are clearer now. Our eyes are opened and now we can fight in broad daylight! We have our new Army of Congressional Constitutionalists!
Another way to think of this is- How much worse things would have been today if we didn't have the Internet, TV, and talk radio. Keep fighting the FCC and Obama in their attempt squash our 1st Amendment rights!
And the number one thing to worry about in 2011 is;
The MaoBama DC machine that will circumvent congress and use regulations and executive orders to move their radical socialistic agenda along at breakneck speed.
It wouldn't hurt to try…
The president can remove anyone on the board, but don't hold your breathe with BHO running the show.
The federal growth momentum cannot be stopped, it must be overthrown by the states. Biggs needs a big government red state governor site.
Have you seen what the UN has said about giving land back to indigenous people? It's just plain insane.
And we are stuck supporting the UN too Gary.
I fear this rollercoaster ride we have been on just went over the last big uphill climb. Down to the bottom we go………….
Funny that there is no mention of the BAILOUT of Israel EVERY year for decades! No, it is only allowed to speak about SOME bailouts. Bailing out Europe is bad – there are White people there! Oh no!
It makes more sense than the never-ending bailout of Israel.
Whatever Obama cannot accomplish through legislative means he will go end-around through regulatory regimes. This is exactly why the new Congress needs to give serious consideration to de-funding the EPA, DoED, FCC, UN and probably many other extra-constitutional agencies, divorce our currency from the Fed and get us back on the gold standard or it's equivalent. Many here have correctly said that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, but Obama and his minions care no more about the law than they do about the survival of this country – they are patently in favor of and earnestly working to destroy it. They must be stopped.
oh, they will most CERTAINLY attempt all of this, if not more…
And continue to use the stooge media to split the electorate into ugly little factions at war with each other.
Why do we know this?
Because it is WHAT they do. They are predictable as the day is long. And will DARE you to stop them…
We all know the GOP's history, so I don't blame you for thinking this way. But the one difference is that there has NEVER been such a large, organized, internet-connected group of Constitutional Patriots to watch over and prevent GOP stupidity before.
This is the age of instantaneous information, so you can expect the grassroots organizations to instantly swamp the Republicans if they even approach stupidity.
I thought the #1 thing to worry about was salt and kids meal toys… silly me.
That is exactly why I fear much and have little faith in efficiency coming back to our government right now after the mid-terms. There is a tremendous amount of work the American people need to do in returning our government to Constitutional principles. Next election with serious meanings is two years away. Newly elected candidates have this time to either prove they meant what they said in shrinking government or become infected with the disease known as “self-serving”. A lot can happen in two years time….ie: lame duck session.
We the People have more work ahead of us than we are prepared to do….
"If they want the states bailed out, Bernancke will sing and dance to their tune."
The one thing that might throw a monkey wrench into the Fed's plans is that Ron Paul now heads the committee that overseas them. Paul HATES the Fed, so I can't believe he won't expose everything they try to do. Unlike the dems who did everything they could to protect their "independence."
ditto to what you said.
Our Nation's existence has rarely been calm and uncluttered by problems and difficulties.
if we are willing to roll with the current array of problems before us, we should stop and ask ourselves: what if our grandfathers refused to defeat the darkness of the nazi's?
no, we fight and push and we bend but do not break.
the insolvency of the states is the most dangerous of the points listed above.
And while they are defunding them – also make it clear these agencies (until they close) aren't allowed to "make" rules (laws). ONLY Congress has that Authority, and that Businesses and Individuals do not have to follow any "new" rule they pull out of their….I mean…create.
This way it doesn't matter what BoBo tells them to pass, the American People will start to learn that – by the Constitution – only Congress can actually make laws, rules and regulations, not "agencies".
Even amongst all the great things suggested, one thing we SHOULD make sure happens this time around…
Scott Brown must lose in his primary to an even more conservative candidate…
Despite incumbency, despite bluest of blue state, despite "the People's seat", despite anything and everything, IF Brown gets tossed on his manly ass to a more conservative candidate, it will frighten the Congress into a more conservative mode, just to save their jobs…
I'm getting a little concerned with Darrel Issa's approach after seeing him on the Sunday shows. Apparently he's going to avoid the appearance of "attacking the White House," by focusing on "government waste" issues.
He doesn't want to be seen sending a bunch of subpoenas to administration officials. But I think that will be the only way to stop the systemic abuse we KNOW will be coming from obama.
Constitution? Constitution? We don't need no stinkin' constitution.
The only answer is to provide an alternative to the central banking systems currently used that also provides a system of commercial banking and credit allocation that is self-regulating and self-sustaining in nature so that the practice of gluttonous banking and self-dealing comes to an end and without us having to support the greed of the banking industry. This requires a completely different approach that you can learn about by downloading and reading the FREE white paper on this proposal at: http://www.capitalismbookstore.com/The-Consumptio....
We also have to face the fact that this year we will have to deal with the complete failure of our public education system and find a way to privatize it so we can inject competition, get real accountability and return our country to greatness. This will require a comprehensive reformation process and plan that you can learn about by downloading the FREE white paper on the Education Plus Universal Education Entitlement Program at: http://www.thefixbookstore.com/Universal-Educatio....
We also have to repeal Obamacare and true conservatives will have to proffer a truly affordable universal health care benefit program that covers every American, adds not one dime to our national debt, is fiscally-responsible and truly affordable. You can learn about a whole new way of delivering truly universal health care that doesn't include socialism, communism, feudalism or death panels by downloading the FREE white paper on this subject at: http://www.rainmakermarketing.com/Affordable-Univ....
Now when liberals tell you that conservatives have nothing to offer, you can say we have solid proposals to reduce the federal budget by more than a trillion dollars, increase entitlement services and eliminate the need for anyone to ever pay taxes again. No VAT, no more Federal Reserve funny money and no more deficits or corruption.
One would think (Yes. I know. Dangerous when dealing with Washington) that if he violated the constitution he would be subject to charges.
One would think.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going!
I think that was Knute Rockne.
Get organized, we may need to visit our elected Representatives, SOON!!!
.
I said in a previous thread to Mr. Issa that "actions speak louder than words". I have to believe Mr. Issa has friends and acquaintances in government that could themselves be exposed for corruption. Suddenly one can realize they are being seen as the local "narc". Either Mr. Issa doesn't want to telegraph his moves or he's had "conversations"……
Remember, we are still being governed by "Chicago Thugs". They can only do what they are best at. And when you alert criminals of your moves, they respond in criminal kind….
#6 is that we are NO LONGER DRILLING in ALASKA and that means LESS OIL for America. THANK YOU OBAMA!

I agree. Lets stop bailing out Israel.
"I have to believe Mr. Issa has friends and acquaintances in government that could themselves be exposed for corruption."
One specific comment he made this weekend is that he will NOT be investigating the Sestak affair, where Joe Sestak was offered a job with the administration if he dropped out of the PA Senate primary. Even though he said that this was clearly a criminal act, he wouldn't be investigating because a Bush official had come out to say that the Bush administration had done the same thing.
That response blew me away. I still expect some good things from Issa, but this decision gives me serious pause.
Blah….blah, blah, blah blah blah………….blah. Blah, blah, blah………..blah blah blah.
Blah, blah, ba-ba-blah…………….blah………
JOOOOOOOSSSSSS!!! .
Blah, blah blah.
Sorry to make you wait. I still have the following ones pending that I need to get done:
1. The Social Security entitlement program workout plan.
2. The housing market and entitlement funding program workout plan.
3. The commercial real estate finance industry workout plan.
4. The criminal justice system reform and workout plan.
I will get to these as time allows in the next few weeks and then you will have the component plans of The Fix completely laid out without having to have bought the book!
there is NO reason for you to have any 'faith'…
That is why everyone must 'double down' and hold their elected representative responsible. AND hope that the inevitable 'crisis' doesn't swing the pendulum so far we cannot retrieve it. These are perilous times- and they require dramatic action…
Amen!

Forget it. Scott Brown is the best you, we can hope for.

A defining characteristic of failing or collapsing government is stepped-up aggressiveness, especially toward its own citizens.
Few Americans know that American finance is nothing less than a double Ponzi. It is already widely known that the U.S. is creating debt and “financing” this debt with newly created debt.
Can you believe that debtors (government) are now simultaneously creditors with so-called “intergovernmental bonds?” This is the extreme opposite of intrinsic value. It is without value and is only pretense or Ponzi. This is no joke, folks. It is the world in which Americans now live.
A Ponzi scheme goes on as long as its growing fragility does not prick public trust. As we know, Bernie Madoff’s scheme only collapsed when individual creditors had liquidity problems and needed to withdraw funds.
Of course, Madoff didn’t have a printing press to keep the Ponzi scam going. But the printing press makes the U.S. financial system at far greater risk and deception because economic collapse may be extended into a later holocaust of Biblical proportions.
Is the U.S. an international gangster? No doubt the U.S. is one of the most aggressive nations in the world. The U.S. has fought by far the largest number of wars based on propaganda pretenses. It has broken the international laws of war, maintained secret prisons and fought an absurd war against drugs in Colombia and Afghanistan and at home where the tentacles of the narcotics mafia now reach into political circles. With no shame for hypocrisy, the U.S. is itself a tax haven for foreigners.
Cables released by WikiLeaks show the U.S. government for what it is: A duplicitous, evil empire that forces its will on other governments while doing the bidding of its corporate masters. The so-called Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) also reveals this. As Mike Adams of NaturalNews.com reports, the FSMA gives the Food and Drug Administration the authority to establish offices in foreign countries to “dictate the food safety plans of foreign governments.” (See page 217 of the bill.)
The global “food safety” plan is to be developed under the consultation to the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Treasury and adopts a globalist food plan — Codex Alimentarius — that was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) under United Nations auspices.
As Adams writes, after submitting to the codex “the FDA will ‘harmonize’ the U.S. food and dietary supplement industries with global Codex requirements which outlaw virtually all healthy doses of vitamins and minerals. Under full Codex ‘harmonization,’ America will be left with a dead food supply and the health food stores will be virtually stripped bare of dietary supplements. Selling vitamin D at a reasonable dose such as 4,000 IU per capsule will be criminalized and products will be seized and destroyed by FDA agents who recruit local law enforcement to bring in the firepower.
“All this will, of course, ensure a diseased, nutritionally-deficient U.S. population. This actually seems to be the goal the FDA has been trying to achieve all along because the more diseased the population, the more money gets collected by Big Pharma for ‘treating’ sick people with medication and chemotherapy.”
The U.S. legal non-system is a lawyer’s paradise, with lawyers enriching themselves on the misfortunes of their clients. It is common knowledge how exorbitant are verdicts of liability, which make business activity extremely risky in the U.S. And the non-system is stacked against the individual or business that doesn’t have the unlimited pocketbook of the Federal government that files endless legal motions and perpetual appeals.
A warning here: As far as U.S. persons are concerned, America aims to abolish cross-border business and investment.
Warren Buffett and Bill Gross both spoke against investments in U.S. government securities. Gross, of PIMCO, the biggest bond fund in the world, advises investors to sell dollar investments, “before central banks and sovereign wealth funds do.”
Has anyone noticed that the U.S. is now generally anti-entrepreneurial and anti-small business with stepped up regulations on small business? This small business administrative burden is nothing less than government harassment.

Nice little jump in rep you got there my good friend.
While true, there are more people with hunting licenses in just two states than there are military, coordination is the problem. Lack of leadership to accomplish what is looking more and more like the only option left, is the key that issue is missing. While I stand for peace, waiting, watching and hoping our newly elected officials will "save us" from this death star circling our planet, hope is not the word which instills confidence. Is it time to prepare for one's self survival? Sadly…………….
Isn't that what happened to about half of the TARP money, unfortunately?
and the ever tolerant PhuckStick speaks again
If the gop goes along with obama-period, there will be consequences.
It ain't over until it's over !
A VAT would make legalized theft by the government as easy to accomplish as the theft already being perpetrated by The Fed's "quantitative easing." Forcing our representatives to vote on taxes is far better than giving a dial to some bureaucrat who will turn it on command.
Here's something else that makes me uncofortable: The Fed is supposed to be supporting stock prices by buying stocks.
What happens if the Fed stops buying?
What happens when the Fed sells the stocks?
Will the Fed start selective buying to "guide" the economy?
Will the Fed start voting the shares to implement a command economy?
We just need to start using methods of communication they cannot control. As far as I am concerned , we are at war with a government that has openly declared us their enemy. WWII was won without the net. We have become too dependent on the internet. Other methods must be developed before the net is completely under the fuhrer's control.
Yes, prices for goods and services will go through the roof since no other tax structures in place will be changed. It sure seems BO wants us to regress 20 years to the socialist status of Europe. Let's hope congress will wake up and not raise the debt ceiling or let a VAT rear its ugly head.
The correct answer in a nut shell is to cut federal spending, especially in the area of all subsidies and foreign aid, grants, and gifts both foreign and domestic. That alone would cut over 500 billion from the budget. Just gotta wait and see what the brat and his understanding of finance, economics, and money flow will be like in his new budget. I forecast little if any change. I also doubt wheather there will be any move to clean up the waste a, fraud, and corruption within existing fed agencies or programs.
Oh, yes. Yes, there will be.
63 conservatives in the house and 5 more in the senate against the rest of the establishment crowd(dims, rinos, and repubs) does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

BO will definitely try to bailout those three failed states on the taxpayer dime or through the fed buying up their junk bonds which will cause further inflation. He need those votes for his 2012 run for the golden ring along with free room, board, travel, and golf.
Tolerant? You think this is the Huffington post?
It's a private company. Most likely the immediate answer is no.
The fed has already been involved in that little intl banking scheme in addition to buying US bonds with monopoly money..
In a blueblood state? Not very likely. However, this rino could lose to another dim.
it is, most definitely, their plan- and they intend to execute it…
Seems as though we could kill multiple birds with one stone if we used the pursestring approach on the UN.
So much of what is wrong in the world comes from THAT unchecked ever-growing big one-world government.

I'm not looking for the best for a general election in Massachusetts…you are entirely correct that those voters will pick a "Taxachusetts" type representative eventually…they're too inured currently to even try…
I am looking for "pour encourager les autres"…
I do think Massachusetts in general is a lost cause, until they start paying for their statism out of their own pockets fully…but it is a PERFECT example to make the TEA Movement the 900 lb. gorilla in the room…without really damaging our real prospects in 2012…
Since Scotty won by outside support, if we throw that support to a better candidate and they won the primary, the word would get around fast that the TEA Movement CAN FORCE Constitutionalist choices in primaries, regularly and routinely without any outside assistance, "on their own hook"…
Play by OUR rules and THE Constitution…or you are ALL THE WAY OUT…either back it, or never see the general election…EVER…ignore it after getting in, and we WILL THROW YOU OUT…
That is a power that would be very useful to wield…
Stupid is what stupid does….
The republicans in the lame session, as we all know, "negotiated" with obama where they came up with an agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts BUT obama got more stimulus money….. The republicans were all excited about getting the tax cuts extended… never mind obama got the extension of more insanity spending heaped upon the American taxpayer.
I'm sorry, in my opinion that showed "stupid".
The Fed targets stock prices and housing prices and bond prices. So much for free markets.

How many hours must each of us work to earn one THOUSAND dollars to spend on a living?
Now, how many nano-seconds does it take for the Fed to electronically generate one BILLION dollars out of thin air, and dole it out to failures by foolish risk takers, and thereby reduce the value of all other dollars earned honestly by labor.
The Fed is not just misguided in its policies. It is amoral.
If some other private institution regularly did this on a such a massive scale, it would be recognized as counterfeit money of organized crime.
Dangerous and imminent. A huge dilemma will be thrown in the laps of the new Congress. Obama will have his preferred socialist remedies, and hel'll be trash talking his usual game: class warfare and race.
I was hopeful Congress would simply turn the states away, have them declare bankruptcy and renegotiate the outrageous union pension obligations. Hadn't thought about the possibility of the Fed butting in, uninvited, to ensure bailouts with fiat money.
God speed Ron Paul.
Fed Likely to Stop Easing Early, Housing and Jobs to Stay Dismal
Friday, 31 Dec 2010 01:10 PM
By Greg Brown and Kathleen Walter
A strengthening recovery is likely to lead the Federal Reserve to abandon its vaunted second round of quantitative easing earlier than most expect, says David Frazier, editor of The ETF Strategist newsletter, published by Newsmax Media.
In an interview with Moneynews.com, Frazier explained that he believes that the Fed will do exactly what it promised in its initial pledge to spend hundreds of billions buying Treasurys through the middle of 2011 — which was to base continued purchases on developments in the economy.
The Fed began the second round of debt purchases in November after telegraphing the move in August. It said then that the buying would last until June 2011 if conditions warranted and would consist of up to $600 billion in new purchases and $300 billion in extra purchases as previous debt rolled over.
“The Fed never said — never said — that it is definitively going to purchase $600 billion, $900 billion, whatever number you want to use, they never said that," he said. "What the Fed did say is that they would continue to monitor economic data, and that they might purchase up to that amount of Treasury securities based on the economic situation,” he said.
Frazier says that data just a month after the purchases began suggest that the U.S. economy will grow at a faster rate in 2011 compared to 2010, and that the employment rate subsequently will improve.
By March, Frazier estimates, the Fed is likely to review the latest data and, soon after, conclude that it doesn't need to keep buying Treasurys.
Once the central bank sees the data, “the Fed’s going to stop purchasing,” Frazier says.
Don’t expect the jobless rate to drop immediately, though, he says.
Historically, by the time the job market improves enough for most people to notice the recovery is already well under way, Frazier says.
“We’ve never had, ever, a ‘jobs-driven’ recovery . . . Going back to at least 1920, economic data shows that economies begin to recover three to six months before you see meaningful improvements in the employment market,” Frazier said.
Instead, as the recovery takes hold, employers likely will increase hours on underemployed current staff, add overtime as needed, and look for productivity gains. Expect the jobs number to improve only after it is evident that hiring is absolutely necessary, Frazier says.
Frazier doesn't expect the housing market to improve during the coming months, yet he says investors have already factored in a weak housing market.
“I think the housing market will have a minimal effect on stocks,” Frazier says.
Meanwhile, corporate earnings in the aggregate should continue to rise in 2011.
Unemployment will remain relatively high, Frazier predicts. That means, however, that the currently employed will probably work harder and wages will remain flat.
Since labor is a large part of corporate expenses, stagnant wages should boost corporate profitability, he predicts.
Meanwhile, economies around the world will improve, he says, and the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts will support a recovery already on the way.
Many Americans have spent much of the last few years paying down household debt, now at the lowest level since March 1998, Frazier points out.
People who have a job will get a “raise” this year of $1,500 to $2,500 on the tax break, he says.
“Given that you’ve already paid down a lot of that debt, you’re probably going to go out and spend some of that money,” Frazier says.
“I’m quite sure Americans overall will go out and spend some of this money they are getting through the tax cut. That’s a big positive” for the economy, he says.
"The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves."George Washington
VAT is a terrible idea no matter how you put it.
I support taxation. I also feel a flat income tax is the only way to be fair about it. Direct taxation is a good thing for our country if for no other reason than when you tax directly you are also asking for greater involvement and participation in government.
VAT is a slippery slope of increasing poverty and ambivalence that no representative should support.
The Fed sometimes tries to fine tune its money printing, and calibrate market reactions to it, by talking hawkish.
Like anything else, watch what they do, not what they say.
This Fed is a one-trick pony. Print, print, print. It's the only thing left in their bag of tricks. It's all they can do, and all they ever will do. This will not change until the Fed finally damages things bad enough that their authority to print unlimited amounts of money arbitrarily is stripped from them.
I totally agree. I am from the Ron Paul camp, and I want the FED audited, then it should be eliminated. Sound money should be a mandate of the United States.
The left has always wanted that VAT from back in the Clinton era. That is why he got the boot from the American public back in the day.
Agreed. In history, money printing always, inevitably leads to the "not a good idea" part. Reorganization of debt would be preferable to more fiat money.
Yes, bankruptcy is an option IMHO. What the Fed decides to do, or not do, is not an option — for anyone but the Fed it seems.
it's….WE'S SKREWED!!!
the initial trouble with any of the options is the debasement of the currency.
think Weimar Republic.
the other trouble is the domino effect when it becomes apparent that the paper we're spreading around is only worth half of what it was.
arable land would become very valuable during that time period.
The rep points are an interesting thing to watch. For instance, sometimes you notice the TD leavings for everyone after a troll has meandered through. I was pegged solidly at 79 for a long time. Then on a recent holiday weekend, I made the usual posts, and lo-and-behold, the rep points jumped to 84. The day after the holiday weekend…retribution, lol! The rep points inexplicably nose-dived to 67, and remained pegged there. A few weeks later, they inexplicably jumped back to 84, and have been pegged there ever since. Don't know what to make of all that except they seem to stay pegged at whatever level; broke free during a holiday weekend, then got slammed afterwards; later restored, but in all cases — pegged. Wierd. In the end, who cares with everything else that's going on?
If you do your own research on who runs ID, you will find your answers tld. The one I researched is a flaming lib.
Comparing WWII to now is difficult, we didn't have the net, but neither did the enemy. Maybe "we" would have to come up with another source of communication, which would be very slow………all the while "they" would have instantaneous coms.
E N O U G H ! We can't take anymore of this cr*p !
