The ‘Rahn Curve’ Shows Government Is Far too Big
by Dan MitchellPresident Bush was a big spender, but President Obama is taking profligacy to the next level. In his first year in office, Obama pushed through a pork-filled “stimulus” that was supposed to increase jobs and prosperity (at least according to the discredited Keynesian theory). Instead, the economy has been weak and unemployment increased. In his second year in office, Obama rammed through a giant new healthcare entitlement, in part based on the absurd claim that bigger government would reduce red ink (the Congressional Budget Office should be abolished for aiding and abetting that fraud). Now we just witnessed the amazing spectacle of Obama actually getting to the left of Europe’s socialist leaders and arguing with them at the G-20 summit that government spending should be even higher.
Unfortunately for taxpayers, government already is too big, and that is true on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This new Center for Freedom and Prosperity video explains that there is a spending version of the Laffer Curve, and that it shows that government is much larger than the “growth-maximizing” level. As shown in the mini-documentary, academic research reveals that government spending should consume only 20 percent of gross domestic product. Thanks to the Bush-Obama spending spree, however, total government spending in America now amounts to about 40 percent of economic output.
It is quite likely, by the way, that the real growth-maximizing level of government spending is much lower than 20 percent of GDP. As noted in the video, the academic research is constrained by a lack of data for nations with small government. Free-market jurisdictions such as Hong Kong and Singapore enjoy the fastest growth, and they both have public sectors that consume about 20 percent of economic output, so it should come as no surprise that scholars conclude that growth is maximized when government is about that size.
But what if there were nations with smaller levels of government? Indeed, the video shows that most nations in North America and Western Europe did have very small governments in the 1800s and early 1900s – often amounting to less than 10 percent of GDP. Does anyone actually think that the United States would have grown faster 100 years ago if the burden of government spending was doubled?
We’ll never know the answer to that rhetorical question, but one thing we surely know is that government today if far too large. It doesn’t really matter whether the growth-maximizing level of government is 10 percent of GDP or 20 percent of GDP. We have a bloated public sector today that is consuming 40 percent of GDP and the long-run projections indicate that the problem will get much worse because of entitlements and demographic changes.

"We have a bloated public sector today that is consuming 40 percent of GDP and the long-run projections indicate that the problem will get much worse because of entitlements and demographic changes."
It is simply unsustainable.
It defies all applicable laws: finance, economics, physics, and gravity.
The Laffer Curve – So easy to understand, even a caveman could "get it".
I'm confused.
Obama says things are better: http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.8adc6...
The market tanked today, and closed below 10,000. There is a crisis of confidence. Somebody needs to get their story straight.
Hey all you have to do is watch the gigantic cluster-you-know-what going on in the Gulf of Mexico. If it weren't for the destruction being done, it would be downright silly.
The latest is the ship "A Whale" cannot operate to suck oil up. The ship could only suck up about 500,000 barrels a day. The problem, the EPA requires the discharge to be less than 15 parts per million oil. OK, so let's see, you are sitting on the beach watching the oil float up, and you ask yourself, wouldn't we be a lot better off if 99% of the oil was sucked up already. The EPA says no you can't.
Big Government cluster-you-know-what in action.
The incompetence would be laughable if it wasn't so dangerous. When the president stands up and says everythig is getting better and if we spend more and let government control more, we'll have a paradise! Yeah, right. A "worker's" paradise.
How can any thinking person not see this idiot for what he really is?
WHAT!?
You mean to tell US that hole isn't plugged yet? This is day 71. The last I heard, Barry was a gonna unleash a can of whoop ass on it, and scare it into plugging itself………….
Protect the country from internal and external enemies, keep the states from becoming fiefdoms, protect the rights of the indivudal.
Thats about it from a broad perspective, how much would we save by reducing the federal government to it's defined role, 70%?
It might seem like a pipe dream but with all that is happening it's possible that the people will give out a mandate to allow something along these lines.
The corrupticians and their handlers will do everything they can to avoid this, even and up to suiciding the country.
This is interesting: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-06-29/citigrou...
Perhaps Prince Alaweel Bin Sultan is dumping shares…………..
No offense to the fella giving these marginally entertaining but absolutely necessary dissertations as to the why's and how's of the free economic system. But is there any way to spice them up a bit? I know. We need Ben Stein and a super model – ok we can't afford a super model – how about an out of work stripper? In the Obama economy they should be easy to find. Borrow Glenn Beck's chalk board, and lets do some economics baby!
it's not just the almost trillion dollar stimulus, what about the almost one trillion added onto the annual budget. and this year thier calculators broke, so now they won't even give us a budget, they will just keep writing checks until we vote the lot out. they plan on spending every dime they can, until banks stop taking thier checks.
Government think in action, they have a check list, if a box isnt ticked then they stop thinking and just stand around waiting for someone to tick the box or write a new set of rules.
LOL
Worse than that, one minute he is saying how great it is, the next how terrible, and off camera rubbing his hands togther with glee like a little shcool girl, inbetween the rounds of golf anyway.
These people are dangerously arrogant, incompetent and corrupt, that combination always seems to get people killed, or in this case a nation destroyed.
"I know. We need Ben Stein and a super model – ok we can't afford a super model – how about an out of work stripper? "
Cool!
Great idea.
I'll chip in $5.00.
In quarters if you don't mind the change.
Don't forget the trillion just announced today to bail out Fannie and Freddie.
It's not so confusing if Obama's definition of "better" is the same as Cloward and Pivens.
We obviously haven't spent enough!
"Punch another hole in the bottom of the boat! The water keeps coming in faster!"
I saw the subject line and just wanted to shout "DUH!" at the top of my lungs. We need more people in the private sector, not the public one, but we can't hire them with this out-of-control tax-and-spend spree by the goons in office. Continuing to bloat the government isn't going to fix it!
I do believe you just hit on Obama's cryptonite….. the thinking person.
It's not just the size of Government on an economic scale that is scary. It's the scope and centralization of the power that is far scarier. Our country is already in uncharted territory here. Never before have the scales been tipped so far and so much authority granted to a single branch of office. My greatest fear and one I pray for every night is we can come out of this peacefully and restore our republic via vote come November. But history is not on our side. I can't find any historical precedent where any governement gave up power peacefully. If there are any historians out there, I could sure use some incouragement and correct me, but I can't find a single instance where this occurred.
Obama lives in his own fantasy world…he thinks that because HE says something that it automatically becomes true…he just doesn't have the brains to understand that WE aren't listening!!
A little off topic but I was reading the Chicago Sun Times (which endorsed Obama) and it reports how Obama was pushing Valerie Jarrett for his seat via the union. Blago's trial is more interesting than Wiegel and if you choose to read the blogs at the bottom, there is a LOT of buyers remorse……mmm..mmm..mmm.
http://blogs.suntimes.com/blago/2010/06/tom_balan...
The rest of the 'socialists' world finally sees that socialism DOES NOT work, yet Obama is going full steam ahead!
Well, the EPA was always one step below God….until they promoted themselves.
Or…."Punch another hole in the bottom of the Gulf. The oil keeps coming out faster."
As long as we are talking economics and deficits here, does anyone know the actual number, the cost svaed by US, if the 20 plus million illegals alien Mexicans all vacated America and went home today?
$583 Billion.
That is BILLION with a Capital B.
That is per annum.
Why can't we balance the budget? We are being Cloward and Pivined to death…………
He's like one of those greyhounds ( sighthounds). They have no concept of boundaries and have to kept on a leash at all times.
problem is, there does not seem to be any cavemen in dc.
Small Government, Big Oil.
no, they said it will total one trillion, its at 148, expected to soon hit 340, and possibly max out at one trillion. but what about the 110 trillion in unfunded liabilities of social security?
I don't need a stinking curve to know this. Now, what can we do about it?
was it moe or curly who said, punch another hole in the bottom to let the water out?
Bring on the freaking rapture…..we are so screwed…
the rest of the world is folding, and obama is doubling down?
It was Biden.
There is a much easier way to judge big vs small or optimum size of government. Review the economic law of Diminishing Returns. It simplifies the rather complex idea of where best to be. With diminishing returns, it is the point where excessive numbers of people, etc, impede the productivity. Currently with the spill and the number of federal agencies tripping over each we have a perfect example of this law – little is accomplished but costs are high.
This might help.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminishing_returns
They don't want to fix it, they want to 'Change' it, and before you build a new structure, you need to demolish the old one.
Big Government, Small dick.
meanwhile, obama was giving speeches saying he "was determined to unplug any holes and wouldn't rest until there were enough holes". After which, he played a round of golf.
That was my idea for a political cartoon: All of the socialist democracies' leaders scrambling to keep from going over the edge of a cliff labeled "economic disaster" and in the background here comes Obama at a charge yelling, "Keep going, it'll be fine!"
Interview with a Zombie. Today's topic – Nullification:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrcM5exDxcc&fe...
Excellent analogy.
That's much better than large government and no oil.
This Federal Government's diminishing returns begins after passing about .05% of its current size.
That zombie looked and talked a lot like Baghdad Bob Gibbs
At least the zombie has more personality than Harry Reid.
That was a pretty stupid line.
Some words to live by with credit due to Chris Muller/CouleeConservatives.com
The Ten Cannots of Modern Conservatism
#1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
#2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
#3. You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
#4. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
#5. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
#6. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
#7. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
#8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
#9. You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence.
#10. And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.
Our elected clowns (I'm trying to be charitable here) in Washington have exactly the opposite values for the most part and it's about time they had there feet held to the fire. http://www.couleeconservatives.com/content/ten-ca...

bwahahahahaahaha!
Yes, they are twins. Love the new word.
Thanks, Deuse….
My thoughts exactly. Don't even need a blackboard. That debt clock pretty much has me convinced, lolol! And if it doesn't do it for you……
phone ANY GOV'T AGENCY YOU LIKE, AND ASK THEM A QUESTION.
You will grow old and die on hold!
Yeah, the general quality of trolls is on the decline. Must be a lack of something in their diet.
You mean a zombie on Quaaludes has more personality than Harry Reid. Did we ever have such dim bulbs wielding big sticks as we do with our leadership in the House, Senate and Oval Office?
The quality of the trolls Soros is pulling out of his ass may be due to the lack of fiber in his diet.
That's for sure. I wonder how many corpses are tangled in their phone trees?
Why do you have to be a smartass?
These sort of sound economic principles are topics that ,…………
are not discussed at cabinet / czar meetings at the White House,…..
the agenda of the Obama administration could not give two shits about this or any other curve,…….
that provides insight as to how we can improve our capitalist economy,……….
Sorry but this site needs more Glen Beck type discussions.
Great post. Thank you, for your work.
We do not even have a budget for this year. They are hiding this from the under class of this country, the ones that do not know the process. This is part of their responsibility to do. Where o where is the MSM?
The MSM for all intents and purposes has ceased to exist.
It occurred somewhere way back when; while we were sleeping. Sometime between the end of WW II and Vietnam. Back in the day when Walter Cronlite became the most trusted name in America.
I think they need more roughage. Or a high colonic.
CHOICES: Believe in comfortable feel good lies, or believe in the cold hard truth, both options are/can be harsh once reality strikes!!! The easy/depender life comes at someone Else's hardship/expense!!!!!
Government at it's current level is unsustainable.
Simply put, there don't exist enough firearms to compel a decreasing minority to work for a minority of the fruits of their labor to support an increasing majority of parasites.
At some point, I will quit working for anything but food directly. There won't BE any wealth to confiscate. At that point, they might as well shoot me, I won't work for the welfare state when it gets more than my family does from my skills.
I really doubt it. Ideologues like the ones we have in office are close minded and refuse to admit any new info into their brains for fear that they will have to rethink their narrow view of the world. This is especially true of Obama; Reid and Pelosi may be, to some small degree, driven also by greed. And not the good kind of 'work hard to get ahead' greed, but the bad 'I want what's your's' kind.

That is a very astute observation.
Margaret Thatcher stated that socialism works until it runs out of other people's money.
Considering that the United States is already technically bankrupt, the Obama expansion of the system has a lifetime measured in months to a couple years AT MOST… It's totally unsustainable and based on formulas that are so fantastic that they wouldn't be believable in a sci fi movie.
Once labor becomes unprofitable (ie the government gets more than you do from it), which we are DAMN close to right now, it will cease to happen. The middle class will either become parasites or go Galt. Neither of which will do anything but collapse the whole damn thing.
If the government went to a 10% national sales tax and did away with ALL other taxes, it would have more money than it knew how to spend, and the economy would go into an unprecedented boom.
With the left though, they are more concerned with control and social engineering than they are with revenue.
Joe!!! Is that You??? Great…now, lower our taxes, you jerk.

The Government would become smaller if Elena Kagan gets a FILIBUSTER! FILIBUSTER! FILIBUSTER!
Ya know – I'm am fed up with this crop of Socialist/Marxist/Idiots – period. November 2nd can't come fast enough – even though by then the evil global warming will probably force me to start firing up the wood burners & being in Ohio – I get maybe 3 months of great warm weather. This insanity has to STOP. I'm busting my hump – yeah actually working for a living – for what? I'm mad as hell and not taking it anymore. The libtards in charge need to be kicked to the curb – preferably jailed. I'm not ever going to wear a gray jumpsuit to kiss their 'collective' a$$es. Thanks, Blammer voters. Seriously, thanks – you morons. I just hope we can survive this regime. I'm starting to think we can't. I'm bummed. I need a beer & another smoke and I'm gonna shut this nightmare off for a few hours before I have to earn a living again. Cripes. Blammers Amerika – I don't like it – and dammit – I'm going to do my part to stop it. Friggin Marxist idiots pi$$ me off.
Keep the faith – I'm trying my best.
"There is a crisis of confidence."
That pretty much says it in a nutshell. People are unhappy with the way the government is handling things and it shows. I believe this is why the democrats went to such great lengths to bash Bush and the economy or at least a pleasant side effect from their point of view. When the people believe the economy sucks naturally they spend less and as a result the economy suffers.
On the up side polls show people expect the economy to improve next year and if they truly believe this then the economy will naturally improve. One major factor that will affect confidence will be the loss of the democrat majority in the congress. They will no longer be able to run rough shod over the taxpayers and the taxpayers may begin to loosen up.
In the mean time we have health care "reform" to look forward to as well as any other last minute changes they shove through in the next few months. It will take time to undo these unwanted changes that have been thrust upon us. But in time it will happen and the people will return to spending their "disposable" income once again.
I don't believe they ever planned on plugging the hole. They prefer that the oil keep flowing into their tanks. The downside is that a portion of it inevitably will continue to flow into the gulf. I think they are playing the "acceptable losses" angle here. If they think they will make more money than they will have to spend then naturally they will continue to try and "contain" and "capture" as much oil as they can.
Oh how they love changing the rules.
Biden would make an excellent Shemp.
Well put. This was my point throughout the presidential election. Change for the sake of it is not what we needed. People during the election continued to parrot the talking points about change and all we thinkers could ask about this so called "change" is whether it's good change or bad change. Obviously none of the parrots had a clue.
Like Reagan said. Some of the scariest words are to hear the government say "trust us, we are here to help".
I think they need a double tap, center mass.
OILY Obama is bringing the U.S.A. down to the level of other nations, leveling the playing field, and reducing our influence in the World.
He is increasing the size of Govt so as he has a huge voting block. If the candidate is liked by govt workers and immigrants and minorities,, too, then he has captured I'll guess 40% of the voting block. As a result, he then only has to capture about 11% of the remaining public sectors' votes. This brings his totals to 51% of the voting block.!
I forgot to include the Union Workers, so that would have to be calculated into the statistics, too, right?
Our votes don't count with that type of dynamics…
It doesn't look like us conservatives don't have a chance! But, Our TEA Party has influence and we will keep up the pressure.
Ask or tell your local school boards and govt officials to issue our kids copies of our Founding Documents, ASAP.
Things are going to get a lot worse and I believe that is what they want. They have to collapse the system before they replace it with their Neofeudalist New World Order.
A 7.62echtomy would cure that.
yup……
especially since they abhor big guns………..
Just sayin'.
Don't be discouraged JinOH, we are on the WinningTeam! Get ready to enjoy the bloodbath coming up. He's already crying about being blocked on things he wants. Ha. We are winning!
Government will be Bigger and more Imposing if Kagan gets confirmed. She is for Government Control. FILIBUSTER!
Sad, but true. Keep up the good fight. I am a believer in the people of this country. The ones that do not drink the kool-aid, and can see, and know reality. God Bless Cowboy.
Yeah – I know – but I'm concerned about what these people can get done to screw the country up before we kick 'em to the curb. I'll never give up fighting these socialists!

Yes, gov't is bloated. In regards to all the chatter about the average gov't salary being $123,000 a year. This "statistic" as a base makes the majority of gov employees GS-15 Step 8 on the General Pay Schedule. This is quite a bloated, impossible in fact as there are not that many GS-15's in the system to create such a statistic. Yes, gov't is bloated. The statistic created probably "threw in" the following, 1) We have an enormous number of gov't workers/contractors working overseas, especially in the CZ (combat zones). This fact alone, gov't employees make additional Hazerdous duty pay, foreign duty pay, overtime, night hours, holiday pay, Sunday graded pay…ALL taxed my friends unless they serve from Jan 1-Dec31 of any year, the whole year and even then I believe they start taxing AFTER $90K or so, FICA comes out regardless along with Medicare/Medicade.more..
2) The recession of 2008 caused a lot of folks everywhere investment problems/loses. So, many, many of the higher-ranking govy people did not retire, even they were already at the highest grades, they couldn't afford it…so they were left in the system to suck on the teet some more. 3) Ah Yes, yes Obama….and all his little Czars and ALL their staffs….Comrades, each staff of every Czar runs 15-30 or more people. Now here is the kicker. These are Presidential Appointees to the govy system, 4-yr max term unless Prez gets re-elected or if the new one keeps them on. So, do the math here. Every Czar is at least a GS-15, probably Step 10 ($129,517) BASE, and if they are in Barry's yard (DC) that's ($160084) MMMmmm and their staff? Whatever Czar man/woman wants I suppose. more.
4) Law Enforcement, Base Salary Yx25% so $75K base = $100K total salary. FBI, DEA, your 1811/1812's and so on. I think we need cops. 5) There is no time 1/2 for GS/GG being awarded, at least not in my command (US Navy). Straight time is it. 6) As a GG-0132 a new pay system was created in 2008 (thanks Don Rumsfeld you JackWagon) called DCIPS. Under this so-called pay for performance system we have NOT received payraises, except for the 2.0% standard in 2 years. No matter if you were a super-troop, you got a bonus of $1500 maybe but NO advancement in career, no payraise. What a great way to save money….you are welcome. So, statistically, this may be right taking into account all these factors…however, there are plenty, plenty of govy people not making bank, healthcare (BC/BS, Aetna whatever) is not that great.
I pay my fair share on dental and vision trust me. Retirement, 30% plus TSP(that loses money all the time) and social security….HAHAHAHA like any of us will see that. Anyways, don't believe ALL the hype, do research, quit believing everything you hear. Like Paul H sez, Here's the rest of the story. Yes, Gov't is bloated
