Higher Corporate Taxes Undermine American Competitiveness and Hurt Workers, Consumers, and Shareholders
by Dan MitchellThe Democrats are trying to cram through another special-interest piece of legislation, which they are calling (depending on the audience) either a tax-extenders bill or a stimulus bill. But they’ve been having trouble getting enough votes for this motley collection of welfare-state provisions and special-interest tax breaks, in part because of the public’s growing hostility to wasteful and corrupt Washington spending. The proposal finally has been approved by the House, but only after the leadership made some (mostly cosmetic) changes to get the votes of a sufficient number of gullible “Blue Dog” Democrats.
The Blue Dogs claim to be fans of fiscal responsibility, but they look at the issue through a very distorted lens. As the Obamacare vote demonstrated, they will vote for big and bloated government so long as the new spending is “offset” – at least on paper – by big tax hikes. This is one of the reasons why Pelosi & Co included billions of dollars in corporate tax hikes in the tax-extenders/stimulus legislation.
What the Democrats (either the blue or pink variety) apparently don’t understand, though, is that corporations don’t pay taxes. Yes, companies often write checks to the IRS, but all corporate taxes are really a burden on workers, consumers, and shareholders. Moreover, in a world where jobs and investment can cross borders looking for better tax policy, a high corporate tax rate is a huge competitive liability for a nation. These are some of the main points in this video on corporate taxation.
Unfortunately, America’s corporate tax rate is among the highest in the world. The federal tax rate is 35 percent and state corporate tax systems push the overall tax rate up to about 40 percent. According to KPMG, this gives America the 3rd-highest corporate tax rate (out of 116 jurisdictions) in KPMG’s annual survey behind only the United Arab Emirates and Japan (and tied with Libya). We do “better” in the PWC/World Bank study of the total tax rate, scoring 118 out of 179 nations. But beating Argentina and the Central African Republic is hardly something to brag about. A new Cato Institute study looking at effective corporate tax rates, meanwhile, shows the United States with the highest burden of all developed nations.
With numbers like this, no wonder some American companies have decided to move to other nations, with some even choosing Canada. Yet rather than fix the problem with a lower corporate tax rate, Obama and the Democrats want to increase the company tax burden – particularly on American multinationals that are trying to compete in global markets. Fortunately, that proposal is temporarily stalled, but with deficits and debt at record levels and almost no appetite for genuine spending restraint on Capitol Hill, this almost certainly means that politicians will continue to look at companies as potential ATM machines to finance bigger government. That’s good news for China and India, but bad news for American workers.

Ever wonder why libs like Clinton always look for the obscure cases to further their views that high taxation is somehow better?
It is more than unusual that anybody with common sense (albeit libs excluded) cannot connect the dots that if you punish GOOD behavior you get LESS of it and vice versa. Europe has learned that their Democratic Socialist model is withering because they are running out of other people's money but we are, in the meantime, led by the left down the very path that has bankrupted the euro. Thank God we conservatives have the mental capacity to recognize that if you reward GOOD behavior you get MORE of it.
"What the Democrats (either the blue or pink variety) apparently don’t understand, though, is that corporations don’t pay taxes."
I think they do understand that point and it is why these politicians see the corporations as a cash cow; the corporations will get the money back by passing the cost on so the corporation can be taxed again. What these politicians don't understand are the consequences of using corporations as a cash cow.
Higher prices for the consumer and the loss of jobs are two of the big consequences of over-taxing a business. Eventually that business can move out of the country and suddenly that particular cash cow dries up taking with it additional tax revenue in the form of the taxes on the wages that its former workers once paid.
Sadly the political response to such an event isn't to make the business environment friendly to keep the businesses and workers in place but it is to punish the remaining businesses and workers.
How have we managed to elect a group of people who seemingly have no idea how to be competitive in the business world? High rates of taxation, stifling environmental regulations and the cronyism of unions and their incessant demands for ever-higher wages and benefits regardless of the fiscal health of the company they work for are counterproductive in the global economy. Add to that the coming increases in energy prices as a result of cap-n-trade legislation and you have a recipe for stagnation and slow growth, if we see any growth at all.
What is neede in Washingto is people with real-world experience who will work for less regulation and taxes and an increase in the standard of living for Americans.
As I have stated before and any sane person knows, the three biggest job and growth killers are taxes, regulation and unions. Look at what the government is doing to us right now. More taxes to support the insane government take over of health insurance (besides government, the only growth industry), support of unions through "stimulus" funds and if they can't legislate through the congress, they just regulate their will. For anything to change, these must be rolled back or eliminated. Its got to start in Nov. or we may well be doomed.
All corporate taxes gets passed onto the consumer in the cost of doing business. Polititians use the tax policy to control and intimidate–both dem's & republicans do it. Dem's just do it better.

The progressive left has been indoctrinating people for years through the educational system. Citizens no longer understand the foundations of this country, nor do they understand the basic principles of the free market and capitalism. In fact, citizens are now taught exactly the opposite of the original intent of the Founders. They have replaced God with Government (praise Gov from whom all blessings flow…). Right now we are in "Alice In Wonderland":
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean–nether more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be the master–that's all."
I fear we are now approaching Big Brother in "1984": Love is hate, war is peace, ignorance is strength.
We have a tough row to hoe in order to enlighten our fellow citizens.
Repeal the 16th Amendment and enact the “Fair Tax.” Anything that leaves the Federal Tax Code in place, are a playground for Washington politicians, right or left to plunder and terrorize it’s citizenry. Corporations do not pay taxes, they’re simply passed along to their customers.
The problem with the Fair Tax "discusion" is polititions want that on top of current tax system-BEWARW!

Mr. Mitchell is absolutely correct. Businesses do not pay taxes, they collect them. Taxes on business are purely a fiction invented by politicians to hide real levels of taxation from the citizenry, aka voters (see also: rubes, suckers, chumps, economic ignoramuses, etc.). ALL taxes are ultimately borne by end users. The shallow pretense of levying some of these governmental charges on the producers not only does NOT reduce taxes on the general public, it actually INCREASES them. As a hyper-simplified example, suppose there's a 10% tax on some business for some purported purpose. The company, if it is to stay afloat, must recoup not only that 10%, but also all internal costs associated with collecting it, accounting for it, and paying it. In short, 10% may well be 12%-15% when it is passed on, either to an end user or another company in the supply chain- where this process will be repeated. Everyone who buys anything from any business subject to this concealed taxation (which is ALL of of them) ultimately pays the accumulated totals. Multiply this by the thousands upon thousands of taxes at all levels in this country and it amounts to something I would have difficulty adequately characterizing without resorting to extremely foul language.
It's sad and shows the abject failure of our school systems when a subject point so obvious, as corporate taxes being a tax on the consumer , has to even be explained then fought over.
If we, as Conservatives, EVER want to see real change in this Country, the educational system needs to be bulldozed and rebuild after we tell the Progs to STFU…..
This Administration and Dems want to DECREASE our Standard of Living, permanantly.

That's why you have to repeal the 16th Amendment first. Very tall order I know, but what do you think Barry is hiring fourteen thousand new IRS agents for?
Very true; Businesses do pass on the costs but when the price to consumers gets too high and can no longer compete with other world wide businesses they will just leave the country along with lost jobs and revenue.
Amen HPD!

To make a long argument very short, consumers(taxpayers) pay both directly and indirectly all taxes to our beneficent government.
Poll the vast majority of the young people in this country and,……….
I would venture to say the result will be,………..
Corporations are bad,………
and in this atmosphere,…..we feel that we can convince Americans to lower corporate tax rates.
Watching this video only tells me just how totally clueless some of us are.

It is a certainty that we can not lift the rest of the world to our level of prosperity, so, if you desire equality there is no other choice but to drive us down to their level. That is the only possibility.
America is starving for leadership that will put her interests above the rest of the world.
Maybe the concept of businesses passing the cost of additional taxation on to the consumers is just too simple a concept for the 'intellectuals' to grasp…….
Frustrating – here’s how we compete’
US – cost to produce widget
Materials $10.00
Labor $20.00
Union requirements
Health care
401/K Social Security
Corporate Tax $30.00
Overhead $50.00
Freight
Energy
Advertising etc
Buying Cap and Tradepermission slips in order to produce $50.00
Total Cost of Widget $160.00 plus let’s say 10% for profit – Cost to consumer $176.00
Chinese Cost of production
Materials $10.00
Labor $00.25/ per hour child slave labor
Overhead $50.00
Selling Cap and Trade permission slips + $50.00 (Hey its all about redistributing wealth remember)
Total cost to produce widget $10.25 plus 10.00% for profit
Cost to consumer about $11.00
When a government favors the welfare of other coutries over its' own they have squandered the trust given to it by the people and must be replaced
Add to this the Clown Clinton, who officially worsk for this government, syays the wealthy are not paying fair share of taxes. She is inadvertently right. According to CBO top 20% of wage earners pay 90% of taxes. That is unfair! But watch this propaganda take hold. Remeber how we use to laugh at the whoppers told by Adminjehad, Chavez, Kim etc. Guess what? We have our own stream of dictatorial propoganda to deal with and it ain't real funny anymore. Nice assist to MSM and teacher's unions for F'n up our country.
that's right. another common, but extremely erroneous, belief is that businesses- especially big evil corporations have an infinitely elastic ability to dictate their costs & prices without negative consequences. something's gotta give.
come to think of it, labor unions are huge believers of this when it comes to their own compensation…
" the wealthy are not paying fair share of taxes." yep, she's the latest winner of the "Half right, Half wrong" award…
True, but they put more money in the pockets of liberals – at least initially – and that is all those pigs care about. Country be damned.

We can always use a few more good Conservatives!
I hope it doesn't come to secession.
But I never thought I'd see things come to what they are.
I never seriously thought it would get like this either. Hopefully enough people are waking up and we can get it back.
