Why Is Obama Trying to Make America More Like Sweden when Swedes Are Trying to Be Less Like Sweden?

1. Sweden became a rich nation in the late 1800s and first half of the 1900s by relying a free markets and small government.
2. Growth deteriorated beginning in the 1970s after the imposition of high tax rates and a big increase in the burden of government spending.
3. For the last 20 years, Swedish lawmakers have been trying to restore prosperity by lowering tax rates and adopting pro-market policies.
So if Swedes have learned from their mistakes and are now trying to reduce the size and scope of government, why are American politicians determined to repeat those mistakes?
This is something to keep in mind with a looming vote on a giant expansion of the welfare state.

We know the Free market system works. Sweden of all places is going to have to explain the system back to American politicians. They have forgot. They have denied. China adopted plenty of free market strategies to their Communism & it has worked for a time. Much to my delight it will be over for them soon. Why we want to be like Europe is beyond me. The sites are nice and good portion of the people are jerks. If other countries are trying to aspire to become a market like America there must be something there that works. The reason why Obama and Pelosi want to do this is because it's bad for the U.S. The credo is "whatever is bad is good." They loathe this country, and want to take it down. It's that simple. Don't look for anything more sophisticated than that.

In fact, why not bring up the UK horror show? Just in the last week, they have reported 1500 dead at *one* NHS hospital due to third-world lack of sanitation and lazy uncaring nurses, and 10-20,000 cancer patients dead because the NHS wouldn't authorize paying for drugs which are standard in the US.

Garrett, no doubt we need reform, but more gov't control will just lead to a more corrupt system. Most of the stories the politicians use to push reform are from failures within the gov't run medicare and medicaid. Those need to be fixed before anything else can happen, since a basic expansion will just lead to a worst system, then on top of that, both of those are in the red and are full of fraud. So, what makes a you think an other gov't run system will be any better, since its other systems are falures and should be either fixed or drop, and let the private network fix everything and not at cost of tax payers.
I have a question for you Garrett, have you ever been outside the country and seen other systems, and why many people come here from other countries to get our medical care instead of their own?

Yes, some of the founders owned slaves. However, they also recognized the evils of slavery and slave trading and began the process of ending slavery with the US Constitution. With hind site, it is easy to criticize slave owners for not freeing their slaves. However, we see today the difficulty that drug addicts have quitting or the unwillingness of the recipients of government benefits (corporations and individuals) to give up their welfare checks. I find it odd that the advocates of big government policies like to criticize the founders for slavery. History has clearly shown how large, powerful governments enslave their populations. Key examples are Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany, Communist China, Cuba under the Castro brothers, Venezuela, etc. The founders clearly articulated the need freedom and limited government. They chose unity with a path to eliminate slavery over anarchy and the eventual defeat by a European power of the day (which would not have helped end slavery).
You need to read more history and be honest with yourself about your findings. Simply repeating the talking points of "your side" just contributes to the partisan divide.

You do realize that Obamacare is not universal health care or nationalized healthcare or "free" healthcare, right? Have you read the bill??? Which other country has similar legislation — which country would you be joining if this version passes? I would hope that you are aware of the large number of people in those countries with taxpayer paid "free" health care that have private health insurance to by-pass the "free" healthcare. Be careful what you wish for. You may join the countries where you not only pay a lot more taxes to pay for non-medically necessary services, under the guise of healthcare, for everyone else but you will pay a bunch for your private insurance if you want access to the treatment you are used to.

Medicare is so efficient that we should expand coverage to everyone.
