My Country ‘Tis of Thee, Sweet Land of Dependency
by Dan MitchellIf you want to get depressed or angry, the New York Times has an article celebrating the effort by politicians at all levels of government to lure more people into the food stamp program. New York City is running ads in foreign languagues asking people to stick their snouts in the public trough. The City is even signing up prisoners when they get out of jail. The state of New York, meanwhile, actually set up quotas for enrolling new recipients. And on the federal level, there apparently is a program that gives states “bonuses” for putting more people on the dole. No wonder one out of every eight Americans is receiving food stamps.

By the way, this is not just the fault of Democrats. The ranking Republican on the Agriculture Committee is a big defender of the program, in part because of the sordid pact among urban and rural politicians to support each other’s handouts. And President George W. Bush’s food stamp administrator actually had the gall to assert “food stamps is not welfare.” No wonder the burden of federal spending skyrocketed during the reign of so-called compassionate conservatism.
The correct policy, of course, is to get the federal government out of the welfare business. If Mayor Bloomberg thinks it is a “civic duty” to expand food stamps, he should see whether New York City voters agree with him – and want to foot the bill.
A decade ago, New York City officials were so reluctant to give out food stamps, they made people register one day and return the next just to get an application. The welfare commissioner said the program caused dependency and the poor were “better off” without it. Now the city urges the needy to seek aid (in languages from Albanian to Yiddish). Neighborhood groups recruit clients at churches and grocery stores, with materials that all but proclaim a civic duty to apply — to “help New York farmers, grocers, and businesses.”
There is even a program on Rikers Island to enroll inmates leaving the jail. “Applying for food stamps is easier than ever,” city posters say. …These changes, combined with soaring unemployment, have pushed enrollment to record highs, with one in eight Americans now getting aid. “I’ve seen a remarkable shift,” said Senator Richard G. Lugar, an Indiana Republican and prominent food stamp supporter. “People now see that it’s necessary to have a strong food stamp program.” …The program has commercial allies, in farmers and grocery stores, and it got an unexpected boost from President George W. Bush, whose food stamp administrator, Eric Bost, proved an ardent supporter. “I assure you, food stamps is not welfare,” Mr. Bost said in a recent interview. Still, some critics see it as welfare in disguise and advocate more restraints. …The federal government now gives bonuses to states that enroll the most eligible people.
…In 2008, the program got an upbeat new name: the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — SNAP.
…Since Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg took office eight years ago, the rolls have doubled, to 1.6 million people…
Albany made a parallel push to enroll the working poor, setting an explicit goal for caseload growth. “This is all federal money — it drives dollars to local economies,” said Russell Sykes, a senior program official. But Mr. Turner, now a consultant in Milwaukee, warns that the aid encourages the poor to work less and therefore remain in need. “It’s going to be very difficult with large swaths of the lower middle class tasting the fruits of dependency to be weaned from this,” he said.

Of course get more people on welfare only the "elites" in government know whats good for you…the more on the public dole the more they can justify in spending and growing government..Will the people ever learn these people are not looking out for your best interest just growing their power over us stupid people.
In our grassroots movement, we need to revive the shame for able bodied people to be on welfare programs. I'm starting with the young in my family.
My VOTE is NOT FOR SALE!!!
Jefferson on a food stamp is one of the most insulting things I have ever seen. Had he been alive to see it, I am sure the Jefferson would have challenged the bureaucrat who made that decision to duel and sued the government for defamation of character.
Bloomberg is the ultimate liberal male Nanny. Put a bonnet on his head and you've got Shirley Booth in "Hazel".
I have an idea: every recipient of food stamps, public housing, Section 8 or AFDC has their name put into a weekly lottery. Those whose names are drawn must report to have their organs harvested for transplant.
I realize that 90% will be too raddled with drugs or disease to be usable, but even the 10% remaining will generate decent revenue, and they can die in the knowledge that for once they're actually being productive.
"Food stamps is not welfare". More doublespeak. We need to double our efforts to expel the efflunt from our midst.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
I remember living in a poorer part of Erie, PA about 34 years ago. We were on a limited budget and bought the equivalent of beans and rice. Those pushing carts piled high with steaks and other high end items paid with food stamps. They reserved their cash for liquor because it wasn't covered.
I suspect people have not changed in the mean time.
Thomas Jefferson, “The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
I don't have a problem with those who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in unfortunate positions, and reluctantly seek available help. But gaming the system, particularly with the encouragement of government itself is disgusting.
I feel proud to be able to say, as I become eligible for 'senior discount', that not one time in my life have I received any type of government assistance, be it local, state, federal, workers comp., unemployment or other.
It's not pleasant to stand in a grocery line and watch someone use food stamps for potato chips, ice cream, and frozen corn dogs.
Bloomberg = Soros : they are close Kommaraden
If we went back to the old system of giving out commodities there wouldn't be near as many people using the system. We need to give the surplus food out that way instead of giving it to the rest of the world. I think basic food needs should be met if they are really in need but paying for candy, cokes, bottled water and all types of food is crazy.
I was inline behind a woman once that had canned dog food and when she learned her stamps wouldn't pay for it she sent her kid to the meat dept for hambuger instead.
Wow, I mean wow…. This boggles the mind. Sadly , the families who are actually working but not quite making ends meet, and who most people wouldn't begrudge the help, are most likely too proud to ask for it. All the while we're handing out free meals to paroled felons and welfare moms. Mayor Bloomberg best be careful, that sack of money he's dipping into is rapidly disapearing. What will he do when the money runs out and there is no one left to tax…
Not only is the city pushing food stamps like crazy, there Chile Health Plan (Basically Medicaid for kids up to 25) is also pushed. Not only for the poor, I have seen kids who parents work at good jobs get it. NYC is already socialized, and starting to resemble the city before Giulliani. Everyone tied to the government in one way or another.
I'm with you 100%. But also, if the government would move itself out of the way of business and manufacturing in America, welfare programs would become increasingly irrelevant in American life, as most people would become so busy with work they wouldn't have time to pursue a government "handout."
Politically it is easier to limit what food stamps can be used to purchase and be aggressive about stricter means testing recipients.
Perhaps the cities should get to keep 25% of what they fail to hand out – so it serves their interests to be stingy.
Bloomberg considers NYC to be just another one of his possessions, so his attitude is "if you're gonna live in my house, you live by my rules."
Elitism is a real curse in leadership. We must vote out all elitists.
Nope. They haven't. Look back to last September when NY gave out stimulus cash to assist students returning to school. There was an "unprecedented" rise in the purchase of beer and plasma TVs.
We're fixin' to find out…not only in NY but California, Oregon, and Michigan.
I keep looking at this program in my state. A big part of this issue, and a matter I'm sure someone at BG will end up covering over the course of time, is that they are continuously moving the poverty line up, always. I qualify for food stamps in my state where I make quite a bit more than a living wage as a union hack would put it. The key? My kids. Since I have five kids I qualify for all this crap government graft. All my life I've busted my arse to feed kids, pay the mortgage, yada yada, you know the drill. I buy my food with DOLLARS, this seems to shock people I know, even people with no kids. They don't understand how I can do that. They ask why I wouldn't get food stamps if I qualify? WHY? I don't want them, that's all. I don't want them to buy my food.
It's the difference between freedom and it's counterfeit. As long as I stay off the doll, no one can tell me what items are approved for purchase, no one gets to ask me for income statements, or bug me for any info, or corral me into any other programs for that matter. This shocks people, they think I'm a fool, which is sad because the fact that they can't understand the principle that is at stake makes them the fools. They cry poverty to a bureaucrat and the next thing you know CPS is doing a welfare check on their kids. THEN they howl!!! HOW DARE THEY!?!
It's just sad, that's all. I don't know what to do about it.
What are you trying to do, ween folks off of Uncle Sugar Daddy? How mean spirited of you
Who says Obama is not winning
All journeys begin with one step.
Obama's USA begins with one more person signing up for food stamps.
Step by step… dependent by dependent….. Obamanation is marching on.
VOTE AMERICA… VOTE.
Simple…If you don't pass a drug screening (not a piss test, but a blood or hair analysis), you don't get welfare.
That, and there needs to be a time constraint on how long an individual is eligible for welfare. It's supposed to help in times of need, not be a source of constant income.
We have a bill on deck right now in the state of Alaska to do exactly that. Anyone on the doll must submit to a urinalysis exam and you could lose your benefits if you prove out to be a doper while you take money off the state. Not an entirely bad idea, I wonder what practical application will bring…..less people on the doll maybe?
I know, let's have an election and see is Americans are willing to watch American children starve.
Food stamps/welfare/SECTION 8 Housing ends in 90 days, never to appear again. Deal with that, commie lib Dems!
pfft ridiculous
No one is going to watch a kid starve, anyone who would/could isn't anything close to an American. You are a real douche bag mika, I envision the pond what spawned you, and I am filling it with rocks.
This is just crazy!! How about a jobs program that requires able bodied welfare recepients to earn those food coupons and monthly checks by performing some kind of community service work. Welfare was not meant to be a way of life but a hand up when you are down not strictly a hand out.
My wife and I work hard every week just to make ends meet and I am sick and tired of supporting some fat lazy a$$ who just doesn't want to work.
I agree with you that anyone who would let an American child go hungry is not a good American.
I agree but…A urinalysis is way to easy to cheat on. Believe me…I have guys at my place of employment that carry clean piss on them, and other things, all the time. Just in case they get hurt and have to go to work med, or if we spring a random. It's just not a reliable way of testing. Besides, other than marijuana, most drugs (like meth, cocaine, crack, the big H) are all out of your system in no more than three days any way. If your token on refer, you can't piss clean for about a month. If you're burning up the glass pecker, you can pass a piss test damn near the next day.
I know it's a touchy topic, and people's privacy can potentially be at risk with doing blood work, but what other alternative is there?
Welfare and food stamps are the currency of personal, individual failure and damnable laziness paid for by those who find these traits abhorrant. It must end. The pity party is over.
Libs gotta do something to get people to vote for them
Michelle Obama said obesity is the biggest threat to our children, taking food away might be the answer. But i do agree no American child should ever go hungry
I was floored by this one. Free cell phones for food stamp recipients in Illinois. If you have a LINK card (food stamps) you get a free cell phone with 60 free minutes loaded every month.
Most food stamp recipients already have a phone, but who cares.
And all the while Illinois is $12 BILLION in debt. Vendors are waiting 6 months to get paid by the state. School districts are waiting for past due checks from the state.
And these goofs are giving away cell phones.
Read it and weep:
"You qualify for Lifeline Service in your area if…
1.You already participate in one of the following assistance programs:
•Federal Public Housing Assistance / Section 8
•Food Stamps
•Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
•Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
•National School Lunch (free program only)
•Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
•Medicaid
30 years ago, I actually applied for food stamps. as I was not able to put enough food on the table…I had one young son..I was turned down and told I was capable of working two jobs, this, as I watched overweight black women get out of shiney new Caddillac's with diamonds everywhere…did I say I had to take the bus? I never went back!
I didn't hear Michelle Obama advocate taking away food assistance to fight child obesity. Two different problems with different solutions. One demands action and the other demands awareness.
It is and it stinks.
how do you make a kid less fat? take away some of his food, thats all. how many kids on food assistance are obese?
Ben Franklin: "“Make people comfortable in poverty and then tell them that they’ll never get out and you are going to be the king of the world.”
“I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” – Ben Franklin
There are tooooo many able bodied men (and women) not working because they are tooooooooo lazy.
They can collect a crazy check, food stamps, housing, on and on.
There should be work requirements.
This produces votes for Dems and no use of birth control.
Oh yes, and time to run around and sell dope.
Ironically, the foods that are highest in fat and sugar calories are also the cheapest. It is not going to be easy to get parents to ween the kids off of McDs.
A work program requirement sounds good OR make them get up and go to school like a child since they want to behave like brats. We are rewarding bad, bad, bad behavior.
Children in my state are fed breakfast and lunch at school! This does not leave a big burden on parents.
Some schools continue this program during summer months.
There are many fat grown-ups here too.
Wre you kidding. A cell phone for everyone on food stamps. It's outrages. My kids use to ask me for cell phones and would tell them go get a job and pay for it yourself. Mean Dad, right? Is it any wonder why this country is going to hell in a hand basket. Illinois, I use to feel sorry for all of you up there that had to put up with the Chicago gangland politicians, but I don't anymore. You get what you vote for. How's that working for you?
Get it? Just wait, you haven't seen anything at all yet! Now, this is a world wide politically correct movement!
Maybe there is some hope for the NY Times after all. I guess they finnally realize if you can't beat em join em. You can't ignore stupid for too long. Rather a surprise that they would actully write this article.
This is what the progressive/marxist takeover is all about! Cause a crisis through a manufactured economic collapse (This one is again world-wide!) and create a cashless society as described in the bible! "Jacob's troubles" are soon coming as prophesied and right here in our own country!!!
Just wait until we're all tied to the "beast" to worship or die!!!
Old Ben was quite the guy! Invented the Post Office, Fire Department, on and on! He even got kicked out of the house by his own son as an old man like 85 years old or something for being to controversial! I have read many times that America would have never made past go if it didn't have Ben Franklin being around to make it work for all the blue bloods that became future presidents, etc. Also read that his basement in his home in England had thousands of human bones in his basement. Apparently, he also was a grave robber so they he could discover things about the human body to use in medicine.
New York City, the most glaring home of clueless dependency politics. I remember when a member of the Wu-Tang Clan right after becoming a millionaire with their first CD managed to get Food Stamps from the Welfare Department of New York.
"It has been estimated (due to rent control) that there are at least four times as many abandoned housing units in NYC as there are homeless people living there." – Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics
The dept of agriculture needs to be abolished as well as a dozen other agencies.
Didn't they start giving Food Stamps and School Lunches to
the middle class some time ago?….I'm all for helping those
that can't help themselves for medical reasons, or for a short
time if they hit hard times…but this welfare crap is getting out
of hand….They even advertise to go and get food stamps…at
least they used to….All I can think to say is, unbelievable!!
This is exactly what this socialist bunch in Washington want. The more you depend on them the more they can control you. And the more votes they get. That's not the kind of freedom I'm looking for. Food stamps are for people who really need them. Most americans are able to work and take care of themselves, but if you're going to give them food. housing, medical and everything else for free, where's the incentive to go to work. There isn't any.
We all need to start talking more about this huge problem and get it out in the open. I think people are afraid to say anything, but I think there are far more people opposed to this welfare than there are for it. Let's start talking more about it. Speak your mind! That's your right!
Keep speeking out Mr. Mitchell. You're right-on.
What good will food stamps be when the produce is rotting at the farms like it did in the last depression? Can we rely on the government to force the farmers to give up their produce even though they can not sell it for a profit?Russia did get the grain from the Ukraine in 1932-33, but killed 7-10 million in the process….it is a slippery slope.
Call 'em and ask!
25! I thought once you were 18 that was it….
not a bad idea… hey, why not make them blood donors also… Obozo says everybody has to share and share alike…
How about no right to vote while on well fare?
Think of it as no representation without taxation.
Think about this…. now that Mrs Obozo is the new obesity czar maybe she will start dictating what food stamp recipients can and cannot buy.
Sounds just like when they gave out credit cards for victoms of Katrina in New Orleans. After they handed them out, season tickets for the Saints and liquor store sales went through the roof.
" …an unexpected boost from President George W. Bush, whose food stamp administrator, Eric Bost, proved an ardent supporter. “I assure you, food stamps is not welfare…"
The real test of this nascent movement of fiscal conservatism will be whether we return to an activist, progressivist, socialism a la GW Bush. Sorry Repubs, but you guys own the legacy of Bush and now you need to polish your consevative cajones on Obama. I with you guys on this, but it seems like you're more interested party control (power) than statesmanship.
While this indirect form of bribery will win re-election for some, the Scott Brown victory shows that those tactics aren't foolproof. Hopefully, there will be a reverse of course soon after this November.
Not at all. We take the kids and put them in orphanages where they can be trained in useful trades.
Let their deadbeat *parents* starve.
The worst part of these giveaway programs is that the receivers do not appreciate the gifts they are given at the expense of the labor others. Most are angry, sullen, and have their hands out for more.
I concur. But you know, for about 170 years the poor and those in dire straits were helped by benevolent individuals, charities, and most of all, by churches and the community. It's the sense of entitlement that has catapulted welfare into the stratosphere. How did Americans get along without welfare for so long? We've been a nation for about 234 years and we got along without welfare for 3/4 of that time.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
This is just more Clabbered & FoxPiven excrement.
Saw this quote somewhere and I wish I could take credit for it…
The best way to prevent poverty is to prevent people from becoming comfortable in it.
I want that on a bumper sticker.
You're right Hanzo, and I can't see anyway out of it…This welfare
state is a different country then I knew growing up…I remember a time
when it was an embarassment to go on welfare, now they wear
it as a badge of honor….(Case in point, Obumble bragging about
his mother being on food stamps.)…I would have asked him if I
had the opportunity why his "upper middle class" grandparents
didn't help their daughter out..People no longer know how to turn
to family….The welfare state has ruined families….It didn't help to
get loads of immigrants that felt entitled too….
Well said Paul.
"My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food prepared for
him. He can eat whenever he wants, 24/7/365. His meals are provided
at no cost to him. He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup,
and again during the year if any medical needs arise. For this He
pays nothing, and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice
neighborhood in a house that is much larger than He needs, but He is
not required to do any upkeep. If He makes a mess, someone else
cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He
receives these accommodations absolutely free. He is living like a
king, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs
are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day. I
was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick
in the head, Holy S#!t, my dog is a democrat!"
Some of you have probably had this funny story emailed to you, below is my reply to it……….
Cats and dogs are not quite as bad as democrats because they at least show appreciation for what you have given them and they don't demand that you give them what they need by acting like they are entitled to what you have earned. For those reasons I would take a dog or cat over a demo-crap any day.
I guess that would work if we lived in a third world country. But not in the United States.
I knew it was someone important. I tried looking for it online but only got close quotes from Mark Twain. Again, a major +1 for the founders. Sure wish we had more of them today.
That same photo of the currency was in Post Secrets as a postcard this past Sunday –
"I am a social liberal, but when I see people using food stamps to buy junk food and soda, it makes me think the program does more harm than good."
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_a7jkcMVp5Vg/S27vycROb9I...
Just heard a news announcement that our California betters are demanding that there be at least one kiosk at all farmers markets so that people with the food stamp credit card be able to buy fresh vegetables like those people with, you know, cash. Those who worked for their money. Those people.
And why not in the United States? Lifetime subsidization of spongers is an inherently European vice, an invasive import like kudzu.
McDs is NOT cheap. Since the government is so hell bent on dictating our lives, why not limit those living OFF the government on what foods can/can not be purchased? i.e. no ice cream, chips, soda, frozen corn dogs, etc.
Testing to see if censorship exist at Big Government.
"The worst thing you could ever do to a person is to put them on the government dole".
Bobby Kennedy
the wait to check out would be too long
Great article! Keep up the good work!
I am on food stamps. Through no fault of my own I flipped a car 6 times, end over end on the interstate. I was on the job in a company car. The State Police did not take me to the hospital, no ambulance showed up. Work fired me when I asked about Workman Comp, I asked so I could go to a doctor. I have been through hell, fractured pelvis and brain injury. (All several years delayed in diagnosis) I fell through the cracks. Family, friends, neighbors and community all passed judgment on me. I look fine. The government saved me. I see all your points as I see the abuses too. Please don't judge so harshly. You are hurting innocent people. Some people are getting help because they need it and you don't know everyone's personal story. Society does bully and pick on the weak. I have lived it. I am grateful for the help I get and I pray you self righteous people never find yourself in need. Peace. Love one another. When society condemned me, the government had compassion.
This issue was extremely enlightening and properly created. I prepare to do some far more exploration on this. With thanks for discussing this timely information. We will need a lot more similar to this.
