Blank-Check Bailout for Fannie and Freddie Means Taxpayers Get a Lump of Coal from Obama
by Dan MitchellEven though politicians already have flushed $400 billion down the rathole, the Obama Administration has announced that it will now give unlimited amounts of our money to prop up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two government-created mortgage companies.
While President Obama should be castigated for this decision, let’s not forget that this latest boondoggle is only possible because President Bush did not do the right thing and liquidate Fannie and Freddie when they collapsed last year. And, to add insult to injury, Obama’s pay czar played Santa Claus and announced that that a dozen top “executives” could divvy up $42 million of bonuses financed by you and me. Not a bad deal for a group of people that more properly should be classified as government bureaucrats.
Here’s an excerpt from the Washington Post about the Administration’s latest punch in the gut for taxpayers:
The Obama administration pledged Thursday to provide unlimited financial assistance to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, an eleventh-hour move that allows the government to exceed the current $400 billion cap on emergency aid without seeking permission from a bailout-weary Congress. The Christmas Eve announcement by the Treasury Department means that it can continue to run the companies, which were seized last year, as arms of the government for the rest of President Obama’s current term. But even as the administration was making this open-ended financial commitment, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac disclosed that they had received approval from their federal regulator to pay $42 million in Wall Street-style compensation packages to 12 top executives for 2009. The compensation packages, including up to $6 million each to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s chief executives, come amid an ongoing public debate about lavish payments to executives at banks and other financial firms that have received taxpayer aid. But while many firms on Wall Street have repaid the assistance, there is no prospect that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will do so.

I think most of us have seen the videos of the Franks, Water, Rains and other Dems/Libs talking about how Fannie and Freddie didn't need the same level of regulation as banks, how they didn't need the same level of capitalization. How there is nothing safer than a mortgage. Why the McCain camp didn't focus more on this when Bush and the Republicans were being blamed for the mortgage crisis, I still don't understand.
Now, after the President slamming the bank CEO's as fat cats, the Fannie and Freddie CEO's are going to get millions in salary, deferred comp and bonuses.
Lump of coal if we are lucky for us and slush funds for them. Get rid of them.
President Bush tried, at least TWICE, to get Congress to do something about Fannie & Freddie, when he was president. The Congress rebuffed him, the Dems ridiculed him, and made grandiose speeches about how "honest" and "wonderful" and "needed" and "corrupt free" Freddie and Fannie were, all the while people such as Raines, Gorelick et all were, whilst those who were running it were getting many millions for the lousy job they were doing.
There NEVER would have been a housing bubble nor a "crash", had the racists and uber lefties, starting with Carter and being pushed farther by Clinton, hadn't forced through loans made to people who everyone knew would never been repaid.
Something is still wrong with this story. Obama cannot unilaterally raise the US debt ceiling by executive order. I have read several versions of this story, but I have not found anything explaining this contradiction.

1redcent, your excuses for President Bush don't hold water. While he was presiden, Bush bragged about how more people owned homes than at any point in U.S. history. He and the republicans made a half hearted attempt attempt at correcting the FM and FM problems. Then, last year, Bush exacerbated the problem with TARP.
Why doesn't Obama and his ilk do these dirty deeds on a Monday morning during business hours instead of at 1:00 in the morning, or just before a 3-day weekend. Yes, that is a rhetorical question.

Tell me what you all think of this. Yahoo has a link to CNN Money about the top states that are losing residents. The top seven in order of rank are: California, New York, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, and New Jersey. Those are all states that went to Obama. In my opinion, there are two ways to look at this.
First, you could say that those states are losing population and if they continue to do so they will lose members of the House, but that will happen over a very long period of time.
Secondly, you could say that the infection is spreading and that will happen at much higher rate of speed.
How do you see it?

Our current financial crisis is the result of government control and management of the mortgage lending industry. Only the government could be so stupid and blind as to lose $2 trillion outright ($2,000 billion) lending money to build houses, the safest and most analyzed type of asset existing.
They set standards for the industry to follow, lowered those standards to follow socialist ideology, bought the bad loans that resulted, guaranteed repayment to the institutional lenders if anything went wrong, and pressured ratings agencies to stamp AAA on new and poorly understood mortgage securities.

Obama received 4 times more money from Fannie Mae than most other politicians. He worked at a law firm called – Miner, Barnhill & Galland, that sued banks for not issuing enough Sub-prime loans. In 1994 he sued Citibank charging that the bank systematically denied morgages to African-Americans applicants from minority neighborhoods. Obama got his wish, lots of "affordable" housing for the poor, who couldn't afford it. He helped his Fannie Mae friends, at the expense of stupid gullible or sharp money-grabbing ACORN who entices the poor to Fannie Mae, Obama makes his friends richer, not only at their expense, but also ours. This man is pure evil!
And to be fair, GW tried to stop it 6yrs ago but the Dems blocked it. John McCain also tried but again the bill was also blocked by the Dems.

This is the 3rd time in several months where my comment about Louisiana and New Orleans being under Dem control for decades where they ran it into the ground has been rejected as a post. I'm befuddled as to why.

Emanuel was at Freddie earning $375,000 for attending 6 meetings as a board member, including one where it was discussed how to pull the wool over the eyes of taxpayers (paraphrasing). After that, he went to Wall St. and without any banking experience, made $16+ million on one deal in less than 2 years. The guy who did the deal with him is now in charge of GM. Coincidence, I'm sure. /s BTW, that guy has no car experience, but what the heck.

This could also be owed to his extreme narcissism, because for a man of few accomplishments, he's been able to fool most people for years. But I agree. Oh, you missed the videos of Barney Frank, Maxine Waters and Dodds loudly and angrily proclaimed that there was nothing wrong with Fannie and Freddie and that they were both financially sound? Incredible!
As for the TARP that Bush pushed through, it was the wrong thing to do, but it was done on the behalf of Obama. It was Obama who exacerbated the problem — especially when he bailed out GM to supposedly keep them from going bankrupt and instead turned the company over to the unions and closed numerous profitable dealerships. In the end, GM declared bankruptcy – which they should have done in the beginning.
Why don't you wake up to the real world where the majority of people don't rely on the government for paychecks and jobs?

And on shore. California has both fantastic oil reserves on land that couldn't be economically drilled at $30 a barrel but at $70 there is a bunch of oil on land. Not to mention the mining that has been stopped for 40 years. California has tin, copper, gold, silver, vermiculite and uranium that have not been mined for years. Believe me, if they had something other than an insane environmental position on mining they would not know what to do with all the jobs and revenue.
Remember what created CA, in 1849 they learned about mining and created the gold rush. Not to mention the oil boom. CA is almost as good as Alaska with minerals but they are totally untouchable.
I think they are a well oiled Democrat machine. I think they know exactly what they are doing and I think they are as crooked as a dog's hind leg. I also see the group in Miami called the "Homeless Voice" that too is an offshoot of ACORN. They collect money at the busy intersections in Miami.

There is no independent auditor overseeing the federal agency responsible for some $6 trillion in home mortgages, because the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel ruled that the agency's inspector general didn't have authority to operate, according to internal memos obtained by the Huffington Post.
The ruling came in response to a request from the Federal Housing Finance Agency itself — which means that a federal agency essentially succeeded in getting rid of its own inspector general.

jamie gorlick didn't take "as much" as did jim jones and the chairman/president of fanniemae, but all told, these three crooks cooked the books at fanniemae so that the "share" "purchase price" would double. this was being investigated by the dept of justice at the same time that enron was unfolding, so that is why we did not know about it. these criminals aggrandized themselves not in increases in their already 6-figure incomes, but gave themselves perks that amounted to the tens of millions of dollars. i'm a real estate professional, so i know quite a bit about this. it IS criminal! fanniemae buys up portfolios of mortgages at a discount so that they, the shareholders, make a profit. anyhow, reported in this same newspaper there is a current article about obama awarding, without congressional approval (they got too tired working on the obamacare bill and had to go home to celebrate christmas), the now executives (of fanniemae and freddiemac) with another $42 million! in perks! and congress didn't vote on it! where will this money come from? another bailout? but the dough/perks will be in their greedy little hands before anyone figures out that obama himself called for it! you think the media will cover it? ha! btw: the head of fanniemae at the time clinton was in office was franklin raines. look him up. he still hangs over at the oval office. he probably is an "advisor" on mortgages, therefore, a "czar!"
