Coffee Tax: Great Moments in Foreign Government
by Dan Mitchell
German politicians apparently have been hot on the trail of evil evaders who did not pay tax on coffee ordered over the Internet. To address this terrible crisis, the government spent 800,000 euro and tracked down 4000 dangerous criminals. Shockingly, a few cynics, including the folks at Reuters, are trying to diminish this triumph by pointing out that the government spent 30 times more than it collected:
Germany spent more than 30 times as much collecting taxes on coffee beans ordered online from abroad than it received in the tax revenues, the accounting office said on Tuesday. Some 4,000 Germans who bought coffee over the Internet from other EU countries but failed to pay the coffee tax have been charged between a few cents to 10 euros ($14.81) in taxes and fees, said Dieter Engels, head of Germany’s Federal Accounting Office. Tax collectors ended up with just 25,000 euros, way below the 800,000 euros in the costs of staff charged with collecting the payments, Engels said.
But look at the bright side. The Obama people doubtlessly will be much more efficient as they administer a government-run health care system. Even if you throw in the cost of jail time for people who refuse to buy health insurance and the cost of foregone economic growth because of bigger government, my guess is that America will only lose $5 for every $1 of tax the government collects.

A perfect example of a federal program doing what it does best. Look away from the cost & results, concentrate on the intent. There you go, all makes sense now doesn't it?
Unfortunately, I am not surprised in the least.
Idiots.
It's the power, stupid.
The kamikaze tactics of totalitarian governments in collecting taxes is beyond common sense but it's no surprise, I suppose, to us small government conservatives. Talk about spending good money after bad.

Is Andy Stern & Co. going to get the enforcement contracts? Who! Are they going to drive around like little parking meter maids in Santa Monica issuing tickets – valid or not – only to leave you to sort out their mess? Are they going to apply the methods of enforcement fairly?
Or are they going to play politics with enforcement? Mr. Gladney. Any thoughts?

I volunteer to be the first person sentenced to jail for not exercising my right to buy Government Health Care.
BREAKING UPDATE: Apparently in return for Senator Ben Nelson's appearance on CNN today, the State of Nebraska will receive free cable for a year.
And the stupid power!
the enforcement will be thru the IRS, heath reform is nothing but a ruse to raise taxes, just like the stimulous, nothing more than a reason to raise taxes and increase the revenue for the political class
Can somebody read this and tell me if it's a hoax?
http://www.worldreports.org/news/252_treasury_sec...
it is uncivilized for the govt. to FORCE us to do this, the political class is anti-social. free markets and free people and freedom of choice are the marks of a civil society
Our current government at work, and how many of Obama's people will be making over $100,000 per year just for sitting around and pushing papers?
Way funny on the one hand, but it's scenarios like this that Will have govts controlling internet interactions in the future. Give the kids "free broadband" someday and they will sign on to anything as long as their iphones can download endlessly at no recognizable cost to them. The Post Office went after emails initially. Tax authorities, which enable those in power to greater power, will one day be handed the keys to the Internet, including all the political interference with commerce we've come to know and luv in the brick&mortar world.
I miss the good ol' days when we could laugh at European stupidity without having to say, "we'll be doing that here soon…"
Now, they are looking at us and laughing because we are following them!
I'm willing to be your "cell mate"…ah, mate.
I welcome the opportunity to "test" the Gubmit's powers with the millions of other independent, free Americans who just say NO to their tyranny in court.
(I’m leaving now to drive my SUV to the range…I have a new scope on my newly built AR10 .308 that needs sighting in.)
Beware the “Zombie Apocalypse” in the near future my friends.
TA TA.
Not Over.
Let me know when you're ready so we can coordinate. I'll need time to cancel the insurance that I have so I can qualify.
A great possible solution? http://dancingczars.wordpress.com/2009/12/20/the-...

it's obvious that they never took Biz 101…what a bunch of power hungry fools….
And the stupid in power.
The money doesn't matter. What matters is making an example of these ruffians so as to maintain control.
And lawzy, they sure are powerfully stupid.
That damned Bawney Fwank will cancel his government-bought insurance, just so he can go to prison.
Each day he wakes up in prison, he'll ask the nearest guard, "Is this really prison? Are you sure this isn't heaven? Where do I apply for a larger cell-mate?"
Wake up and smell the coffee. . .America.
Not only will Fed Govt lose money but also, the state govts will go further into deficits. The
solution coming in 2009?. . .taxes and more taxes.
We may only be able to afford a whiff of coffee aroma in the morning with what is coming.
How will we recover control? . . .get out the vote — like never before — to overcome the liberal safety ballots stuffed in car trunks, the discarding of military ballots, and the Chicago style voters whose motto is — "Vote early, vote often."

I don't know but I'm gonna find out.
But I'm gonna find out , know what I mean?
Can you imagine how much faster that will happen when the non producers are locking up the producers.
Just wait till they want to tax our tea!
You got it right. We need to throw the rascals out starting in 2010.
Being a former Federal employee in the debt collection business for a few years, collecting 1 in 5 debts is a pretty good standard. But, we weren't under Marxist rule at the time. That will change soon.
Just wait until Boris Obunghole's "Health Police" kick into high gear. You will witness Government at its finest. Who would have ever believed that Amerika would degenerate into the fetid cesspool that it currently is, complete with its Czars, Politburo and Proleteriat………..

almost sounds like one of those fantasy games that have popped up around the net lately…like the one where odumbo has tried a coup and glenn beck and rush are found dead in a government camp….I don't know…I'd think if these people had been detained we'd hear it all over the commie news networks….
I can't wait.
I am going to get FREE 3 square meals a day, Housing and FREEEEEEEEEEEEE Healthcare while I get to sit in jail.
FREE GYM, FREE CABLE, FREE Laundry, AND on top of it all, I'LL PROBABLY GET A BIG CHANCE TO SUE THE GOVERNMENT FOR UNCONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOMS TAKEN AWAY FROM ME, when common sense INDEPENDENTS TAKE POWER BACK IN WASHINGTON
yaaaaaaaaaaa hooooooooooooooooo,, can't wait
that is what they do. if you get a bicycle stolen they don't send anyone out to take a report. please.
i'm thinking a little more, shall we say… active, resistance will be in order. maybe it's time the gun owners show the limp-wristed weenies on the left how this 'civil disobedience' thing should REALLY be done….
LOL!
just the lower paid functionaries…
yes, i believe we should only investigate robbery if the costs related are less than the value stolen
They don't your area? Shame – in mine they do.
The state of FL back in the 1990's spent between two and four million dollars chasing on-line sales taxes.
About half was spent on tax payer awareness advertising.
In the ads they explained – you were a criminal if you didn't track your on-line out of state sales for the year – calculate your taxes due and mail the amount in a check made to some obscure department and all properly coded, blah, blah, blah.
After two years they got just under $1,400 dollars for their effort.
Awesome – just freakin awesome!
Ok, so now were all criminals – yawn.
Makes me think of the 67,000 lines of federal tax nobody read before they enacted it BS.
We've got a whole federal system so ridiculously run amok in reg's none of it's worth bothering with.
Like Charlie & Tim do for instance. . . "What, I pushed the Turbo-tax button?" "Really, well not really, but you know. . ."
