Real-World Evidence Shows Big Government Undermines Economic Performance
by Dan MitchellOn Wednesday, a video was posted explaining the theoretical reasons why excessive government spending hurts growth. Just in time for the weekend, here is the second installment in the two-part series. Using cross-country data and citing scholarly research, the video reviews specific evidence on the negative impact of bloated government. Share it with your friends, of course, but especially send it any statists in your address book. Can’t hurt to expose them to the truth.

The Democrats are crying about the loss of donations from "Big Business" I could not imagine why business would be threatened by "Big Government"
haha, they aren't getting donations
Do you honestly think there are polititians that believe bigger government is the answer? I just cannot believe that we would elect anyone so stupid.
Big Government = An illegitimate system, an illegitimate government.
As for the "lack" of contributions all I have to say to them: How's that "Spread the wealth" thing going for ya ?
Big Government?
Let them eat cake!
Let Michelle trade in her kahle for collards.
How could any serious business support this current form of Fascist Government, unless the business was on the dole, on the take; getting Government bailouts or special favours.
What he fails to mention in his 'prosperity' analysis is that in Sweden health care is free, higher education up to PhD is free, better access to unemployment benefits, and they top the States in secondary education comparisons.. sorry, GDP says only little about 'prosperity'..
"What he fails to mention in his 'prosperity' analysis is that in Sweden health care is free, higher education up to PhD is free"
Free. You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
What you fail to mention is Sweden will probably be one of the first western countries to fall to Islam.
Well, that, and he fails to mention is Sweden's confiscatory tax rates. He thinks that government can provide something for "free," when all a government can do is move money around from one person to another. That health care, those PhDs, those unemployment benefits, they're ALL paid for by someone's money.
that's not a very good argument against the state of Swedish prosperity.. social freedom and prosperity and be distinguished to an extent..
Well, no tuition fees at all.. that's what it means.. everyone can study for 'free' up to PhD
Well, that's then distributive justice, and any government does not, even the U.S government. The question is, to whom what should be distributed. And a government that distributes a full equal possibility for all its citizens, and even to what you might call 'aliens' to study up to PhD for free take its citizens into equal consideration as well as proves more freedom to its citizens that any one who charges.. true liberty means access for all qualified, regardless of your background..
The scary Islamists.. congrats.. you have been well indoctrinated by those who are on 'a crusade' against a single religion.. I wonder whether we should actually be scared of actually falling to fundamentalist Christianity more.. with the resources western democracies have in terms of military, it is highly unlikely that a single one of them 'will fall to Islam'.. See Turkey for example.. in which the military protects the secular constitution..
the argument that less government logically equates to more prosperity is founded on a false premise, as it does not take in any way into consideration how the prosperity is distributed. For example, the U.S. health care is about twice as much of GDP compared to that of the British system, which provides access to all. When prosperity is measures, also the distribution of prosperity needs to be taken into consideration. Cost effectiveness and other related issues need to be taken also into consideration. If prosperity is simply measured in terms of GDP, it also leaves out the environmental aspect of prosperity, and the access and quality of education. Prosperity is more than GDP, and no, that is in no way directly related to who is first to fall under Islam.
"Well, that's then distributive justice"
…DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE?
(rolling eyes)
No, that is called socialism. Call it what it is, cherrypicking. It is taking from one person to give to another, using the threat of governmental force. It has nothing to do with liberty, nothing to do with freedom, because true freedom includes the right to say "no." to keep the products of one's own work and not have it confiscated on the whims of others.
That's not free. It is simply paid for by someone else.
Look, socialist, let me explain this to you: there are very, very few things in life that are "free." Medical care and college education are not on that list. Someone else pays for it, and the Swedish people pay for it in other ways, through high tax rates, limited service, wait times, and most importantly, through the other things that money could have bought.
Now, if Sweden wants to do that, it's their business. WE ARE NOT SWEDEN. You want health care? Get a job and get it. You want a PhD? Get a job and pay for it, or borrow money and pay for it and pay that money back. Often, it is the struggle to earn something that makes that thing worthwhile.
"See Turkey for example.. in which the military protects the secular constitution.."
Is that what you want? A military enforcing your constitution? That is the future of many European countries. And if you want to see the future of many others, look at Bosnia.
"Is that what you want? A military enforcing your constitution?"
That is what the military is doing currently in every country, it's purpose is to protect citizens against foreign and domestic threats.. and Milosevic started the war, and started slaughtering Muslims, not the other way around. Yugoslavia was already crumbing, because it was an enforced state instead that did not share a common identity.. even a general one which would consist of the respect to the constitution and the values it represents.
"That is what the military is doing currently in every country,"
No. You don't understand how the United States works. The military does NOT enforce our constitution. That is a very dangerous path, and always leads to the same end: military dictatorship.
And my point about Bosnia stands, because I wasn't talking about a war started by Muslims, I was talking about WAR. In decades to come, some European nations will begin to shatter. Some will revert to fascism, others to civil war.
No. You don't understand how the United States works. The military does NOT enforce our constitution. That is a very dangerous path, and always leads to the same end: military dictatorship.
Then how threats against the democratic institutions are managed? Gun ownership was one solution to this, if I understand correctly. However, I believe this does not suffice. Regardless whether written in the constitution or not, de facto the military does exactly this, secures the preservation of democratic institutions.
"In decades to come, some European nations will begin to shatter. Some will revert to fascism, others to civil war."
what is the evidence for this?
Also, the same argument could be said about US, where the divisions between liberals and conservatives is getting wider by the day..
there's a huge problem with this video. its saying because u.s. consumers borrowed and spent more than other countries, thats proof we are more prosperous. its what bankrupted us. fail.
"No. You don't understand how the United States works. The military does NOT enforce our constitution. That is a very dangerous path"
I guess the key difference here is between enforcing and securing it. What I meant to say in reference to Turkey was that it secures, protects, the preservation of the constitutional order, i.e., the security of democratic institutions, but does not actively engage in its enforcement (although I concede that in Turkey it engages a bit too actively to politics)..
Move along moron, it's you who has been indoctrinated. Try reading the European press. Better yet, listen to the Islamists OWN WORDS. Islam is a complete system of morality, justice, and governance whose Sharia laws and principles should be the sole basis of governance and everything else in life. Their stated goal is Islam and Sharia law to rule the world. They blatantly state that immigration along with reproducing will achieve this. You're utterly clueless.
There is no pure Nozickian state, and this non-interference what you are advocating is as utopian as the Soviet Communism.. the state does not work like that in the real world..
This is not a very good argument against european society model. And the reference to european press.. well, when the news outlets in the States are MSNBC and FOX, there seems to be no objectivity there either, on either side..
and if some islamists claim for revolution through reproduction, this is what the fundamentals are advocating, similarly as some Christians – for example the previous president – are advocating crusades. That is not true liberty, with freedom of religion, speech, conscience..
Now, if Sweden wants to do that, it's their business. You want health care? Get a job and get it. You want a PhD? Get a job and pay for it, or borrow money and pay for it and pay that money back.
that is not a very good philosophical defence of the justice of the system itself.
"WE ARE NOT SWEDEN"
yes, and that is what will bring the states down fast, gap between rich and poor is growing, the division between dems and rebs is crowing, the public discourse is getting more hostile by the day.. where as Europeans are getting more united,, (see a project called European Union).. and the states give less equal concern to each individual's liberty and equal opportunity… non-interference does not suffice for equal opportunity.. the state interferes necessarily, and it provides an infrastructure, subsidises churches by tax exemptions, subsidises education, provides basic education for free, even in the States.. and no, it is not all about road to socialism.. it's about liberalism that considers the equal opportunity and liberty to pursue happiness regardless or your background.
You want health care? Get a job and get it. You want a PhD? Get a job and pay for it, or borrow money and pay for it and pay that money back. Often, it is the struggle to earn something that makes that thing worthwhile.
This is not a very good argument why the system should be as it is. The basis for the ownership argument is mixing labour with something previously unowned. However, the assumption here is that you have received your skills yourself, without any help from others. In the real world, all states subsidise universities and provides basic education, infrastructure, security etc. Therefore, a person does not acquire what she has completely independent from others. This Nozickian idea of absolute ownership is founded on a utopian idea as crazy as Marx's theory..
And as the Europeans are getting more integrated by the day (see a project called European Union), the States is getting more divided, gaps between rich and poor is growing fast, the divisions between dems and rebs, libs and conservatives, I would say that the States is more at the brink of collapse compared to European states. And yes, the Europeans can contain their Islamists.. you just give them a little bit that evil socialist good, and they become all benign.

A study suppressed for at least two years shows that regulations in California cost us $500 BILLION and 4 million jobs. This is without AB32 and without taxation. The government is strangling our economy!!
