Wash Post Opposes Big Labor Bill, Sees Share Price Double
by Don LoosOn the morning of June 16, 2010, the Washington Post published a well reasoned editorial opposing federal mandated forced unionism on state and local public employees; specifically, first responders such as police officers and fire fighters. Could this moment of clarity by Washington Post editors have reassured investors, resulting in its stock doubling in one second as noted in the Drudge Report?
Probably not, but that’s no reason not to welcome the Post, even if momentarily, back to the real world. And, welcome its opposition to another Obama-Reid-Pelosi payback to Big Labor that attacks states rights and limits police officers’ and fire fighters’ freedom at work. Even, the Post rejects this power grab:
ALL ACROSS America, state and local governments are struggling with recession-induced budget crises … Many public employees have been promised pay, pensions and health benefits that tax bases cannot sustain even in good times. As a result, voters and political leaders of both parties are rethinking the costs and benefits of public-sector unionism.
Except in Congress, it seems. Senate Majority Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) is pushing to federalize labor relations between state and local governments and some public-sector unions. … the bill is supported not only by Mr. Reid but also by Republicans, including the soon-to-retire Sen. Judd Gregg (N.H.). It has a good chance of passing if the Senate can fit it on its busy calendar.
Advertised as vital to the dignity, health and safety of our nation’s first responders … But there’s no clear connection between public-safety employee unions and public safety. Indeed, Virginia’s violent crime rate is less than half that of next-door Maryland, where collective bargaining for police prevails.
What this bill would do is impose a permanent, one-size-fits-all federal solution in an area — public-sector labor relations — that has traditionally been left to the states, and …Colorado’s “fire protection districts,” special units of government dedicated to providing that service, would face costly collective bargaining even where firefighters and management are working harmoniously without it.
This bill is a bad idea whose time, we hope, has still not come.
So, this time I agree with the Washington Post and recommend that everyone contact their congressional representatives today demand that they vote no on Harry Reid’s Police Fire Forced Unionism Bill (S 1611 & S 3194 /HR 413). The U.S. House is preparing to vote on this Bill within in the next week, possibly as early as today. Click here to take action and contact your elected officials.

"Welcome to the revolution" !
Contact my rep?! You're joking right? They have not listened to me since Obama got elected and started pushing his socialist agenda down our throats, so why should they start now. My "reps" are Arlen "Buh Bye" Specter and Bob "Constituents? What are they?" Casey.
How many states rights can they forcefully take over in two years? Just another big F-U to the Constitution, and now even the lefty media is calling them out. Watch close for which republicans vote for this – the govt. employee unions likely already own them.
"Those people" have yet to get the impression that "US" People are geting tired of their bull feces. They will understand in November.
The Post is doing backflips again, but they'll never regain my trust. And PLEASE, would you fine folks living in Nevada vote out the Harry Reid monster.
I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE
They never answer the phones. They don't want to hear from us. We're just a bunch of stupid mobsters that are only good for our tax money.
Meanwhile you have these illegal groups that flock the streets with clubs, and throw bottles and they bow down to them. Rather than throw them all in jail where they belong. When does this madness end?
I'm from Oklahoma. I don't have to contact my representative to know they will vote against it.
You got that right! Sometimes I think they already ARE tired of us.
I know exactly where my representatives in Wisconsin stand. Diametrically opposed to whatever view I take.
Does this mean the fire dept. will picket a fire? Or that the cops will call off a high speed chase of a wanted felon? Break Time.
Unfortunatley it means those exact kinda of shennanigans. They will dictate to us what their job is, and how and when they will perform it.
And if you don't like it see the steward.
Too bad the American people won't get out there with their signs and say…. NO MORE MONEY!
All of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the States; the States created the Federal Government. –Ronald Reagan
I don't get why the federal government thinks it can do a better job than the State or local government regarding most issues. This bill will usurp the State's right to self-govern. In Texas and other the Right-To-Work states, people don't have to join a union. This bill will force the unionization of the police and firefighters. A shameless power grab by the feds.
Right there with you. Fortunately I have an outstanding House Rep in Joe Pitts! I gave up on the two "do what they want" Senators a long time ago.
At least they listened to you at one point (I'm jealous). Of course, I live in California.
“A well-known Harvard law professor turned to me with some exasperation and said, ‘Your notion that the Constitution is in some sense law must rest upon an obscure philosophic principle with which I am unfamiliar.’ That attitude is common among our constitutional philosophers. It is fair to say, as Gary McDowell has, that in the law schools, ‘The question today is not so much how to read the Constitution as whether to read the Constitution” (Robert Bork, The Tempting of America, The Political Seduction of the Law, 1990).
Sorry to hear that! ; )
i'm sorry i have dance lessons for my pig today, my senators are burris and durbin, i stand a better chance with the pig.
The states will rise up against the federal government! WE do NOT fear them like they think we do!!
LOL That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.
It happened in NYC in 2005 with a transit strike. It inconvienced so many people, esp. the ones who were paid hourly and couldn't afford or find a cab to take them to work. Reagan, 1981: When the air traffic controllers didn't go back to work in an illegal strike, Reagan fired most of them.
Ahhh yes, back in the good ol days when we had a real President. I miss him so much, he was my very first President I ever voted for!
The best that I can do here is to repeat the post I wrote just yesterday. It's incredible, but federal takeover stories have become a broken record. From yesterday:
Beyond repeal of obamacare, blocking cap and trade, defeating command and control "financial regulatory reform," and nationalization through bailouts, what we need to do is change one central mentality in this country. And that is, WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY MORE CENTRAL CONTROL FROM WASHINGTON D.C.
We don't want "better Washington policies." We don't need a "change in direction" in Washington. We need a dissolution of Washington's authority in every area of governance outside the enumerated powers. PERIOD. Individual freedom is anathema to central authority. They cannot co-exist.
Fight for our rights at all cost! The federal government has no rights not enumerated in the Constitution, period.
Stop the madness, now. The marxists in power in DC will be at their most dangerous from now to the election as they try to take over all of the government and gather as much power as possible before being voted out (or thrown out) of office next year. You are nothing but an insignificant serf standing in their way.
Be prepared, it's a very dangerous time for We the People!
"The marxists in power in DC will be at their most dangerous from now to the election"
Actually Mike, those same marxists will be the most dangerous, just AFTER the election. We need to focus like a laser on the lame duck session of Congress. They will all posture BEFORE the election, but once it's official that the American People have "thrown the bums out," all bets are off. And that period of time between November and January may just be the most threatening period of time in all of American history. Look for the marxist bastards to try to pass the worst of their legislation for the marxist president to sign. Once that happens, we will be saddled with the socialist state for another two years, since obama will veto any attempt to reverse the course of America's destruction.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. I wouldn't be breaking out the champagne just yet.

Since it seems the unions are heading in the direction of socialism, fascism, or statism at terminal velocity, the correct response is for all state legislatures to adopt the Right to Work laws. That just might put a twist in the unions' silk undies. My question is why we have public service unions in the first place? It takes nearly an act of God to remove incompetents from public service anyway.

It just gets worse and worse… keep unionizing these sectors that don't need unionizing… keep watching productivity go down and wages increase. There is no need for these unions anymore unless you think that protecting bad employees and forcing wage increases at the point of a gun are good ideas. You know who needs unions? China NEEDS unions. The USA does not.
I do! How've you been? I've been commenting but not as often as I used to. (Got tired of repeating the same stuff over and over I guess!) All is well here. We're stocked, locked and ready to rock! The November elections can't get here soon enough!
Too true! Thanks for pointing that out. We truly live in very dangerous times! Stay alert and keep your powder dry, we may need it.
I can just imagine that the debate in the White House now is whether the next false flag, or, I mean, "crisis" should be launched before the elections, to protect their majorities, or just after in order to justify the passage of more "America's Destruction Act" type legislation. Either way, we need to be prepared for the fact that we will be in this battle to save America for at least another decade, if not for the rest of our lives. Troubled times are ahead.
