The Tea Party Movement: How We Got Here
by Dana LoeschSomething curious happened during the summer of 2008. Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi,
shut down the House and C-SPAN cameras with a resolution that passed by just one vote, smack in the middle of an energy crisis. Afterwards, Madame Speaker jetted off on a week-long book tour while gas prices soared.
The Republicans stood in the dark and refused to leave. A few officials, including John Culberson, took out their phones and began Twittering the action to America, this spawning the #dontgo movement. It was the first nudge to the hibernating conservative constituency who were excited about having something over which to be excited in their party. Netroots activists seethed at the realization that Democrats left America in limbo rather than vote against reducing energy costs and drilling stateside – though the majority of the population approved of such. They rallied around the legislators that had the brass to stay and urged them to “Don’t go!”

Democrats shut down Republicans a second time promptly after the election by moving to bar them from amending legislation in the House.
Taxpayer fury over these offenses grew to a shriek in February when Rick Santelli delivered his famous diatribe on the floor of the Chicago exchange. The feelings of angry disenfranchisement felt by so many conservatives coalesced following Santelli’s speech. The first wave of tea parties came from this, the first national effort occurring on February 27th, 2008. I was at St. Louis’s very first tea party and stood across the mighty Mississippi on the Arch steps with a bunch of wide-eyed, virgin protesters who were just as shocked as I was to see the amount of people who had assembled.
We’ve kept the movement growing, too. Nationwide demonstrations on April 15th with a bunch of smaller ones peppered in between have raised awareness of government trespasses; the email distribution lists have grown; the flash protests have swelled in size; more people now than ever are reading the legislation that their officials can’t be bothered to read. The administration relented and addressed us this past spring as we protested outside the president’s town hall in Arnold, Missouri. He invited us to meet with him. We accepted, we sent him a certified letter of acceptance and thanks, he never replied.
Conservatives exhausted the phone lines and keyboards contacting their representatives to alter their vote on the stimulus, cap and trade, and other legislation. Leaving messages with clueless aides wasn’t enough. Receiving canned email responses which did nothing to address voter concerns wasn’t enough.
It only validated what we all knew anyway: Washington wasn’t listening.
We conservatives, still stinging from the Patriot Act and the Wall Street bailout of the previous administration, were furious. If our elected officials were too busy frittering away our taxpayer dollars to take our calls and emails then Katy bar the door: “we the people” would march to their offices.
One of the first town halls was that of Claire McCaskill; she and Americans for Prosperity arranged a make-up “listening session” for conservatives with her aides after her University City office staff had a melt down when constituents marched to the Senator’s office and tried to speak with the her. Staffers responded by bolting the door, drawing the blinds, and calling the cops. The listening session was specifically for those citizens who felt excluded and the result was an endless stream of polite, but impassioned citizens who raised their voices and pointed their fingers towards McCaskill’s aide Michelle Sherrod. Video of this, taken by myself and Jim Hoft, went viral.
Conservatives stormed town halls across the country as their officials arrived home for recess. We lined up and blasted our representatives for forsaking us and the Constitution. We expressed outrage at the lack of debate concerning the health care proposals. When our officials went into hiding, like Russ Carnahan did, some of our like-minded conservative brethren plastered fliers featuring the MIA legislators on the back of a milk carton.
Democrats feign shock; they can’t possibly imagine the cause of so much fuss. Hand them their smelling salts. They bemoan the “rudeness” of the loud town halls while lying to constituents about portions of the health care legislation, bussing in plants, and supporting SEIU members who beat down dissenters in the parking lot seemingly on their orders. They’ve called us “unAmerican,” “evil-mongerers,” “silly,” “an angry mob,” “terrorists,” and that what we’re doing “borders on treason” – all which seems truly rude if we’re defining rude behavior. Their only defense against this strong, informed citizenry is to brush them off as kooks and they’ve leaned heavily on the mainstream media to do so.
Just one problem: conservatives are bypassing mainstream media. Conservatives blogs are on the rise and media is loathe to admit that we’re dominating social media networks and the best sellers’ lists.
The collective consciousness of half the country’s population has changed: we stopped measuring our validity and successes by the media and by our enemies’ criticisms. We embraced the spirit of the underdog. We realized that GOP is not synonymous with conservatism. Some of us are preparing to run for offices ourselves, we’re launching our own conservative groups and organizing petitions, rallies, and lobbyist efforts all around the country.
The tea party movement has challenged the GOP to get back on track or risk losing its grip on the right wing. It’s reminded Democrats that a slick marketing campaign coupled with paid activism isn’t the same as a groundswell of real change and the reason that Democrats are so hostile towards it is because they’ve never before encountered it.
This movement celebrates its last big hurrah of 2009 before marching headlong into a midterm year. The tea party is far from over and for the sake of checks and balances, I hope it never ends.

I am thrilled, encouraged and excited about the day, the emerging movement against Big Brother and the new forum/portal/connecting point that you have provided here at BigGovernment.com.
This is a good day for those who hope to restore America to the founding principles that made her the greatest nation in God's creation.
Best wishes to all marchers and thank you, BigGovernment.com, for helping to bring us all together in the struggle!

Outstanding! Indeed, most, if not all, of the truth being provided about this administration and its brethren is coming from Conservative bloggers, the web and Fox News. Nowhere to be found are the main-stream, state-run media. Thus, we must not relent and must continue our efforts, the tea parties being a prime example of how well we are prevailing. Keep at it! The Statists shall soon be on the ropes, if they are not there already and their absurd attempts to vilify and/or silence their critics/opponents are becoming more and more transparent to all but the most die-hard of the Statist supporters. Let's maintain our focus and energy and reclaim our country from those who so desperately seek to forever alter it.
Well done!
"The only thing necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing." ~Edmund Burke~ 1729-1797
It is time for all good men to stand up and be counted. Joe Wilson was the first when he shouted "YOU LIE" to The Great Leader this past week……….
Now we can see why they want the president to have control of the internet in an "emergency"
And I hope the national march on Washington that's taking place today is enormous. We need to remind our representatives of just who is angry and outraged after President Government Motor's speech to the joint session. Lest our representatives forget and buy into the idea that what Obama wants is more important than what many Americans want it needs to be loud and proud in DC today.
Thank you Dana, you and others like you have led this movement to where it is today. I am very happy to see you here on Big Government, keep up the good fight.
Morristown NJ tea party sent at least seven buses down to DC this morning — they arrived at about 10 am so you should see them there.
Ekeefe3 – you are exactly correct!
Cowboy Logic – thank you for posting a quote from one of my mentors; the principles of Burkean Conservatism so desperately need to be regained today.
Likewise, these profound words (from yet another one of my favorite conservatives, along with William F. Buckley and Ronald Reagan), which have still not lost their veracity, need to be followed as well:
http://jacksonianlawyer.wordpress.com/2009/08/28/...
Just saw helicopter coverage of DC on cnn and msnbc – THE CROWDS LOOK HUGE.
Another win for the good guys!
Dana, You are one of the best reporting on this movement, glad you are here at BG to giving us reports!
Grassroots not Astroturf, “ We The People” must hold our elected officials accountable for their words and actions.
For all those peacefully protesting at Local, State and in Washington D.C.today, you are serving your Country well, for those of us unable to attend, we are with you in spirit!
America is the land of the free and home of the brave.
In the course of human events…
Identify and expose the roots of this movement to destroy America. It's not the puppets Obama, Bushes, or Clintons. My God they're not smart enough. They all receive marching orders from the so called " Shadow Government" behind the scenes, possibly the Bilderberg group. Until you march on those really responsible, I'm afraid you'll just keep confronting an endless string of new puppets for decades to come.
Wished I were there today! Please, all of you at biggovernment.com, Fox News, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, the bloggers, etc – please keep the REAL news coming to us. We appreciate it so much.
[...] Over at the HuffPo—which has withheld publishing any lugubrious screeds on the Census Bureau’s having severed ties with ACORN, because the administration has once again caved in to the paranoid demagoguery of Glenn Beck, simply to spite my desire to lick their tears of unfathomable sadness—you’ll find Deepak Chopra telling readers that all is well and that Fox News can simply be ignored, because all of its viewers are outliers. You’ll find Steve Almond at Salon lamenting the state of the NYT non-fiction top ten, which has been dominated by conservatives since Obama’s election, representing these books as a strange new strain of fiction. Writers will tell you that the “Tea baggers” are old, bewildered white people who can’t believe that their paradigms are being superseded, and that they’re just grey-haired revanchists, and—not to put too fine a point on it—racists. Dana Loesch will tell you how we got here. [...]
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Thank you Dana!! You do our great State of MO proud. Some of my way too liberal friends have tried to tell me that I am in the minority. Every protest, every townhall, etc. proves that I am not. Sitting back is no longer an option and I look forward to campaigning for candidates that truly work for the people. Now, if we can eradicate the cancer in MO that is Claire McCaskill and Russ Carnahan – that will truly be great progress for America.
Bravo! I am an American soldier in Iraq, I have had the honor of serving with a soldier who came to America from Cuba. He has lived in our country since he was four years old,he now is 33 and obtained his U.S. citizenship in 2007. I am here to say that my friend has American pariotism that is based on the constitution and beliefs of OUR forefathers that surpasses most natural born Americans.
My friend has seen the similarities between his former Cuba and the direction of this country. Sure he was only four when his family left Cuba; but his family educated him on their past life in cuba and his father still lives there, so he is up to date on both countries and their polotics. with that said, he strongly feels that if Barrack Hussein Obama continues to lead this country down the path he has chosen, we as citizens of America will soon be living in a ditcatorship. And I for one agree with him.
Truer words have never been spoken.
The Tea Party movement is great.
The GOP needs to be cleaned out. I just have a bad feeling that a lot of the established guys at the top see this as a way to get re-elected and get power back in Washington. There are some people in the GOP who are really on board with the Tea Party ideas, and the ideas behind the 9/12 project. But i think we need to do some serious house cleaning in the GOP.
Anyway, i think the ideas behind the Tea Party movement, and the ideas behind the 9/12 Project are great.. and they're just what we need to restore our Republic and root out corruption on BOTH sides of the aisle.
The time has come!!! Throw the bums out, ACORN et al!
Make a great statement with some humor!

A lot of us here in Louisiana feel the same as you. Well-said.
This would make a great speech. I read it and wanted ti shout out "YAHOO". Excellent piece of journalism. The sleeping giant has awakened.
Yes, the House GOP protest *was* likely the first spark. It's grand to see this unfolding, day after day. Who can tell what it will all mean, but I'm sure many books will be written about what I hope becomes the collapse of the New Left/Progressives and the reemergence of Reagan Republicanism.
Dana Loesch, You Are A GREAT AMERICAN!! Thank you very much for your efforts and hard work in reporting the "truth" to your fellow Americans. Big Media will never carry the 'real news', because of their biased liberal beliefs and policies. Thankfully, Conservative Americans are waking up to the Realities of the OBAMA Administration. OBAMA's Promises of HOPE and CHANGE have resulted in the rapid descent into tyranny of these United States. Daily Our Nation is bombarded with one 'crisis' or another all caused and exacerbated by the agenda of OBAMA's Administration. Every facet of our lives has been affected; economic, employment, liberty, and proposed health care? These Grass Roots Movements and Tea Parties are just the beginning of what it will take to restore Our Country to it's former status before the concepts of Socialism, Fascism, and Marxism reared it's ugly head on Our Way of Life here in America. The forthcoming elections of 2010 cannot come fast enough, so Americans can have a chance to throw out of Office, those members of Congress coming up for re-election whom refuse to listen to the Voice of The American People. May GOD Bless The U.S.A.!!
Thanks Art
Best of luck in Louisiana. I am a Bobby Jindal fan and hope he continues to fight for you.
Dana has scored a bingo in her anaylsis of the "utter shock" by libs toward the real freedom lovers of America. A very strong case has been made that the REASON for the lashback toward Congress and the libs is a RESULT of their rude indifference. They have opened the proverbial Pandor'as Box….which shall never shut again. The Libs spawned this freedom loving attitude and for that I THANK YOU !

Great column, Dana. Today is truly a day of celebration. It's the culmination of days, weeks and months of protesting and making our voices heard. Those who pretend this movement is not happening, who try to invalidate us do so at their own peril and I'm not just talking about Dems and libs. I'm also talking about the "mainstream media" which to me is an oxymoron. They've got some stiff competition and they know it. They're running scared. They're not so mainstream anymore and it's thanks to Tea Party Protesters! Honestly, who needs the mainstream media anymore? They're dying on the vine. If today is any indication, this movement will not end until checks and balances are restored.
"Amen!" to my fellow commentators and to those souls participating, in particular, to the rally in Washington D.C. today; there has perhaps never been a more dire need to restore the values upon which our nation was founded and return to the solid principles of Burkean, Buckely, Goldwater and Reagan Conservatism – a distinct difference to the "Republicanism" as we know it today. Let us not relent, but let us move forward with even greater, renewed energy and motivation. The Statists in office (and their supporters) will exhaust every means necessary – both constitutional and not, both legal and not – to shove their socialist agenda down the throats of our citizenry. We need to fight back, even harder than they.
Keep up the good fight! It is indeed working.
FYI,
CNN is claiming the DC protest is 500 people. The Washington Post says "thousands" of "activists". Bull.
I've heard that the Metro was standing room only and the protesters are spilling over into side streets off the mall. I lived in DC for years and there were only two times that happened. And the one the media remembers was the Million Man March — about 200,000 people. The other was a prolife protest that brought aroun 300,000-400,000 people. From what I've seen, this is as big or bigger than both of those.
"500 people" my rear end.
Funny how Obama had to leave town today. Coward.
With an attitude, not too crude, and a little rude, the Constitution will be pursued.
you are so right
AndrewPrice –
Indeed; that's The Messiah's M.O. – either silence his opposition, vilify them, deny them or run from them. The product of life-long coddling and surrounding by the radical-left.
I bought those big Lipton tea bags and decorated my strawberry tree in front of my house – on the mall in spirit!

Your recital of the historical facts brought a tear to my eye. While Bush and the Republican dominated Congress severely damaged conservativism, the current administration is magnifying the mistakes. Conservatism is not dead!!
Thanks for all you are donig to revitalize the conservative principles we MUST demand of our government.
An outstanding essay, especially the last sections.
If, like me, you can’t make it to Tea Parties, let not your heart be troubled, um, hee, hee! ;-D
If your blog is about things other than the issues of the day, that does not mean you have to sit idly by, and not help the cause in simpler ways.
I’ve added a Blogroll in my sidebar, over 120 strong, of Conservative sites, personalities, and blogs, many old, familiar, and established, but many also new, and growing, and asserting themselves in the marketplace of ideas.
When you click on the link with my name you will read an essay I wrote the other day, called “Not Exactly Sitting Idly By”, the point of which was to talk of my politics, but also to talk about how, in recent months, I got to thinking that maybe there was more I could do, in a subtle way, to help spread the word on the issues, and events of the day.
My main Food for Thought Blogroll was the result, and I did not come to the decision to add it to my sidebar lightly.
It’s there, and my traffic is miniscule, but visitors will see it, and, as I write…the choice to explore those links is yours.
Just 1 small way ordinary Americans can join the fight…
Do something in your sidebar that reflects your views on, and support of, Conservative Ideas, and let your readers do with the info what they will.
Just sayin’ is all. ;-D
Thank you Dana. At times of despair, pieces like this give cause for hope.
I suggest that we all contact our Representatives and urge them to vote against any reprimand of representative Wilson. He has apologized to the speaker who was interrupted. That apology was accepted. Matter closed. If the Speaker wants to censure all interruptions, fine. Start with the majority who repeatedly interrupted the President. Otherwise, Move ON.

Dana, you rock. I wish that you were on 97.1 during the week!
Is there any way to help people understand that universal healthcare is not a right? Why do liberals get so confused about the difference between rights, privledges, and unrealistic ideology? I'm sorry, but I don't care if someone's grampa cannot afford the latest pill that some 'evil' drug company spent millions developing and is now asking $10 a dose. I actually don't mind helping to pay for some sort of last resort safety net but for God's sake, this idea that free healthcare is a right is complete insanity!
amen!!!!!
- FEEDOM ON THE MOVE- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgufIqNYBYQ- thank you
what crap. much to about nothing. just republican drivel or excuse for republican coup
I only wish I were able to be part of the march on Washington, it truly brings tears to my eyes to know that just we as honest americans may finally band together and put american values and freedoms first. Stop big goverment spending, telling what to buy, eat, healthcare, taxing at their will. I e-mail my congressmen everyday, but what comes back are the standard form of being ignored, they refuse to listen (Kohl and Feingold from Wisconsin). It is time that WE THE PEOPLE are in charge. Thank all of you for being their and and all tea parties, I would love to be involved. I am a senior citizen but fired up against this adinistration or any other that tries this takeover.
Can't argue with facts so you resort to scatalogy. Sucks to be liberal.
Here are two appropriate quotes for today, courtesy of Barry Goldwater: "A government that is big enough to give you all you want is also big enough to take it all away." "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!" Just some food for thought…
Thanks for the near tem history lesson, as a matter of fact our town is having its 3rd teaparty rally today and while the crowd may be dampened by the rain, its spirits are still burning high. You know, we might just turn this ship around after all! Keep up the good work.
CNN? The "Leader" in news? Shots fired on the Potomac?
CNN is more fake than professional wrestling.
LOL! Yeah, they should have asked some questions before pushing the panic button on that one!
That sounds like the Barack I've come to know and despise.
Thank you.. They are all patriots, will the Liberals/Progressives are chicken sh*t's..
I'm now hearing here in AZ that numbers could indeed reach 2 million… zowie!
Amen. And Amen! We will not remain silent as these "leaders" and "patriots" persist in trying to twist our nation into something completely unrecognizable. Just as Glen Beck described socialism as a mix of Marxism and Democracy, These people are trying to bastardize our nation into something completely contrary to what the founding fathers had envisioned. This vision they had was inspired by God and born in the teachings of his only begotten Son, the Christ Jesus. We must once again, as a nation, give thanks to God for the many blessings he has poured out upon us and submit ourselves to his guidance for without him the people of this nation will continue to stray deeper into darkness. Moreover we must continue to be the light and truth for those who have none for without it they can never be cleansed.
Reports here in AZ on our local Fox station is predicting close to 2 million by the end of the DC march. Holy porkulus, Batman!
He's probably gone out for ice cream… or a Dijon-swabbed burger.
I've been in and out of the Springfield, Missouri, Tea Party event and am enthused to see so many likeminded Americans taking the time to get out and make their voices heard.
The ACORN story was still generating a whole lotta buzz, of course, a la "Advance the Cause of Child Prostitution? YES! WE! CAN!" at http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...

While I like hearing the estimates, I doubt that. Having seen several hundred thousand people there three different times, I can assure you that you would know if they hit well above 300,000-400,000 people. The city simply can't take that kind of volume. The biggest rally (which may have been the Promise Keepers or the Million Man March, can't remember which was actually bigger) covered the mall and went about two blocks in either direction down the side-streets — and that wasn't more than 300,000 to 400,000 people.
I understand that right now the mall is mostly covered and there is a little spill over into the side streets, but not even one block yet and only near the capital. That tells me around 200,000 to 300,000 people.
Which is not to denigrate the rally. This is still HUGELY impressive. That makes it one of the top 2-3 rallies in my lifetime.
too bad he had to come here, to minneapolis. the stench of patchouli is unbearable.
Too bad President Obama is using the "If you can't see me, then I can't see you" strategy. The biggest proof that he knows the importance of what is happening in Washington today is the fact that he left town. Tomorrow, his Press Secretary will pretend that today never happened…..but Americans know it did.
It would be more impressive if he stood up and faced the music….honestly discussed the issues and he and his pals stopped trying to "spin" Americans into thinking that those who expect their Government to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and represent the People's interests are misguided, or worse yet, unpatriotic.
There's no dishonor in being a One Term President……ask Jimmy Carter!
Please keep up this good work!!
That is one of the most beautiful sites I have seen in all my conservative year. I wish I could be there.
Question: Pray tell. of what government was Obama speaking when he said that it will pay for everything he wants by getting rid of the waste, fraud, and abuse in health care. From its track record, it most certainly cannot be the one which he currently heads up. "You lie", should become a rallying cry for America, as "Remember the Alamo" did for Texas.
Control it? I think not–he needs too read it–while he is at the Consitiution too.
He might have been speaking of the same government and/or country he was speaking of when he promised to create "2.5….no, wait, THREE million new jobs" during his first two years in office. Some 8 months into it, with about 16 more months to go, he better get a'crackin'. Seems he's eliminated an insane amount of jobs, and has his sights on entirely eliminating the health insurance industry. Perhaps he meant he was going to do all this for our friends the Chi-Coms. I discussed that: http://jacksonianlawyer.wordpress.com/2009/08/06/...
In any event, B. Paul Gilstrap, you're definitely right on-point.
LOL! I was going to suggest you folks keep him. But I guess you're not for that?
And I wish he would NOT apologize! I was proud of him. The Dems boo'd GWB, and nary an eyebrow was raised. So why all the hoopla over a Constitutional right! FREEDOM OF SPEECH! If Nazi Pelosi don't want anyone to talk during a presidential address, then make it a rule and make EVERYONE STAY IN THEIR SEAT AND SHUT UP! …. and no clapping either!
What Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the socialist libs don't realize, for each Tea Party member on the streets of DC today, there are a thousand that were there in spirit, and we'll be at the polls in 2010.
The GOP leadership should take notice as well — we're not at all pleased with the limp-wristed efforts from you either. Time to MAN UP!
Stand up! Support Joe Wilson! Or update your resumes.
I would be willing to bet that the ratio is about even between democrats, libertarian and republicans sir…the American people are standing up for our rights…the hope and change isn't working and the evidence of that is quite clear. Wake up Joey!!!
There is so much corruption in government today its unreal. I'm so glad to see my fellow Americans speaking out for their rights. We must NEVER let anyone or anything change our constitution for any reason. Setting term limits for ALL of our politicians would be a very good start. Making it so lobbyist are fined along with those they associate with would be another (because corp. America has no place in politics). Anyone who makes campaign promises and then does a 180 degree turn impeachment should be the reward for that. We have so many things to fix and we have to find a way to do it. We cant let them (politicians) get away with this behavior anymore.
Keep it coming
Libtroll as per usual: all insults, no substance.
if you do not like the present government vote it out . which is the real right we should be protecting. not mere conspiracy theories of right wing lunatics.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article... – Daily Mail puts it at 2M.
The people in congress need to be reminded who is the employer and who is the employee…. you are right on Boopster… our forefathers are and have been turning over in their graves at the travesty that has come about… career politicians, etc… looking out for their own wallets and not ours… we need to make the next mission to take control of the congress in 2010; by independent minded, honest people… get rid of Dodd, Reid, Pelosi, Frank and other crooks… we must demand an investigation of ACORN and the misuse of taxpayer money… we have a voice; we must now use it
amen, amen… corruption is not just onesided; it's both sides of the aisle… with sweetheart deals, lobbyists, etc.
Amen Art

For the BILLIONTH time in my life I am proud of this country!
voting is not substance. duh
It was wonderful to see the American People rising up! But I was very disappointed with Glenn Beck's Special on Fox today. I wrote him with my thoughts. He hyped that he has something big to reveal corruption that goes all the way to the White House, is bigger than WaterGate and the Civil War. He said he was afraid for his life, if he has an accident before Saturdays show he has let a few people about what he had to share. Nothing he shared on Saturday would make someone off you. Glenn lost my trust, and now I see he apart of the problems as well. I hope to God it isnt about rating for him!
I got goosebumps as I read the chain of events that led us to the great march on Washington today. I had all but forgotten about the Santelli rant and Pelosi turning out the lights on a GOP reluctant to leave the chamber. Who would have guessed the movement would not only still be alive today, but exponentially stronger. Simply astounding.
Shame on the republicans criticizing him for telling the truth. We all need to contact Boehner and let him know that his his support for another apology on the house floor is unacceptable.
No kidding! Beware Mark Lloyd who is so taken with Chavez.
sorry brudda, we already have a clown to deal with, and al franken
Good article, but I don't get singling out the Patriot Act. I haven't heard much conservative rumbling about it. Airport security, yes, Patriot Act, no. I thought that the complete exclusion of the early January events of Obie's promise to "remake America" which certainly frightened me, as well as the stimulus boondoggle, should have been noted instead. The bailouts were critical. The "I Won" gauntlet was disturbing as well.
We enjoy your show in STL.
Way to go Dana AND the REAL Americans. Perhaps, just perhaps, those brave men who pledged "…with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor," will find a way to smile today…
Dana: So happy to see you here. I hear you every weekday morning on the radio. You do us proud! Keep up the good work. If you're running for office, you have my vote. God bless you and God bless the United States of America.
Jacksonian Lawyer: Burke had it right, Buckley and Reagan had it right, even Joe Wilson had it right this week when he shouted "YOU LIE" . That needs to be the new rallying cry for those of US who want to save our Country. We must save Ronald Reagans "Shining City on the Hill", before those carpetbaggers reduce it to nothing more than a ghetto.

What a wonderful day. Our voices are being heard. I wish I could have been there..couldn't attend for health reasons..but stayed glued to FOX and cried for joy when Glenn Beck was on. This site is awesome, the commentaries are wonderful. For the record..my husband is retired policeman from DC..he did crowd estimates and agrees with another poster..it was one of the largest crowds he has seen..and he agrees it was about the size of the million man march. Now we need a direction to keep the movement going. God bless our great nation.
My husband is pictured above!! We are in DC and were told that DC police estimated 1.5 MILLION people. It was amazing!!
OK, now here's how we _really_ got here:
"The best ordered state will be one in which the largest number of persons … most nearly resembles a single person. The first and highest form of the State … is a condition in which the private and the individual is altogether banished from life …" (Plato's _Republic_ & _Laws_ c. 370 BCE)

Excerpt, Page 1, Chapter 1:
"Here is the theory:
"It is thus necessary that the individual should finally come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence of his nation; that the position of the individual ego is conditioned solely by the interests of the nation as a whole … that above all the unity of a nation's spirit and will are worth far more than the freedom of the spirit and will of an individual…."
"This state of mind, which subordinates the interests of the ego to the conservation of the community, is really the first premise for every truly human culture…. The basic attitude from which such activity arises, we call-to distinguish it from egoism and selfishness-idealism. By this we understand only the individual's capacity to make sacrifices for the community, for his fellow men."
These statements were made in our century by the leader of a major Western nation. His countrymen regarded his view point as uncontroversial. His political program implemented it faithfully.
The statements were made by Adolf Hitler. He was explaining the moral philosophy of Nazism.
…
And here is the ultimate practice (as described by William Shirer in The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich):
"The gas chambers themselves [at Auschwitz] and the adjoining crematoria, viewed from a short distance, were not sinister-looking places at all; it was impossible to make them out for what they were. Over them were well-kept lawns with flower borders; the signs at the entrances merely said BATHS. The unsuspecting Jews thought they were simply being taken to the baths for the delousing which was customary at all camps. And taken to the accompaniment of sweet music!
"For there was light music. An orchestra of 'young and pretty girls all dressed in white blouses and navy-blue skirts,' as one survivor remembered, had been formed from among the inmates. While the selection was being made for the gas chambers this unique musical ensemble played gay tunes from The Merry Widow and Tales of Hoffmann. Nothing solemn and somber from Beethoven. The death marches at Auschwitz were sprightly and merry tunes, straight out of Viennese and Parisian operetta.
"To such music, recalling as it did happier and more frivolous times, the men, women and children were led into the 'bath houses,' where they were told to undress preparatory to taking a 'shower.' Sometimes they were even given towels. "Once they were inside the 'shower-room' — and perhaps this was the first moment that they may have suspected some thing was amiss, for as many as two thousand of them were packed into the chamber like sardines, making it difficult to take a bath — the massive door was slid shut, locked and hermetically sealed. Up above where the well-groomed lawn and flower beds almost concealed the mushroom-shaped lids of vents that ran up from the hall of death, orderlies stood ready to drop into them the amethyst-blue crystals of hydrogen cyanide….
