Reid’s Health Care Bill by the Numbers
by Derek Hunter
Let’s take a quick look at numbers behind the Senate health care bill introduced by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Reid claims his bill will cover 94 percent of the population at a cost of $849 billion over 10 years.
The population of the country is roughly 300 million.
At this point you need to understand one thing – there are two vastly different numbers used for the uninsured. The first number consists of all the people uninsured at some point in a given year, whether they are citizens or here illegally. The second number is the chronically uninsured, those who have spent an extended period of time (years) without insurance. The number for the former, the one I like to call the “kitchen sink” number, is one with which you are undoubtedly familiar: 47-49 million. The number for the latter, the chronically uninsured, is one you may not have heard before: 12-15 million.
How these differing numbers come to be is a story for another day, but let’s analyze both of them for the sake of argument.
Accepting Reid’s statements at face value, his plan will cover 94 percent of the 300 million US population, or 282 million Americans.
Currently, using the chronically uninsured number, there are 285-288 million Americans with health insurance. Using Reid’s own estimate, his plan would mean between 3 and 6 million more people with health insurance.
Using the larger kitchen sink number, Reid’s plan would cover roughly 30 million more people than are covered right now. But at what cost?
Insuring 30 million people at a 10 year cost of $849 billion would mean a per person cost of $28,300. Over 10 years that would be $2,830 a year, but this isn’t a 10 year plan. The bill before the Senate doesn’t take effect until 2013, well after the next Presidential election. And while the Congressional Budget Office score covers the years 2010 through 2019, only in the years 2013-2019 is anyone actually insured. So we’re looking at a window of 7 years, which give us an average cost of $4042.85 per person, per year people are actually being insured. The average person could find a cheaper health insurance plan.
However, if we assume all the money numbers are correct and the government is ready to spend $4042 per person, per year to cover just the chronically uninsured, and we multiply that number by the 12-15 million chronically uninsured, this plan would only cost between $339 billion to $424 billion, less than half the price of the Reid bill.
Since we can see there is a huge discrepancy between what they’ve said they want to do (help people get insurance) and what they’ve actually proposed (massively expand government at a great cost to you and all future generations), do you think maybe Reid’s 2074 page health care “reform” bill might be about something more than simply insuring people? Might it be about control?
Just a thought.
*NOTE: Bear in mind that CBO cost estimates on health care have never been correct, 5 years after its inception Medicare ended up costing what CBO said it would cost in 25 years. And these are just basic math calculations that don’t take into account the massive bureaucracy that will eat up a large percentage of these costs while inserting itself in your medical decision. Anyway…

Thanks for putting into print what I have been asking everyone who brings the subject up. If the plan is to provide for the uninsured, why does it do so much more and still have so many uninsured at the end of the plan?
YES, it might be about control…
Harry Reids Healthcare? MALPRACTICE.
Ok, lets take a fresh simple look at that 12-15 mill number of uninsured.
My simple contention is that there are 12-15 mill people living in the us that realize they are 1-3 paychecks from being in poverty. Of course, if they do have that problem, and find themselves in poverty, then they are covered by the various state programs for the 'poor'. This leaves these people with a really tough choice. They can go and buy insurance and live worse than people in poverty that get it for free, or they can do without.
This is exactly the kind of 'donut hole' that only the government can create. Supplying free services for some while hammering those just slightly better off with the bill.
I do wonder why NONE of the EXPERTS on the subject of insurance have NEVER managed to figure out what every just above min wage worker in the country already knows! Seems like they are all isolated from the 'common man' in their own personal towers of eliteness.
Personal towers of eliteness?
That would be called the White House, and the Capitol Building.
Is my math fuzzy or what?
285-288 million with insurance now
282 million after reform (94% of 300 mil)
means a loss of 3-6 million insurance policys.
and how much will it cost to lose this coverage?
my guess is 5 trillion over 10 years
Think the numbers are high now, just wait until Obummer tackles the amnesty issue….better add another 30 million uninsured illegals to that total.
another thing….
I thought our goal was to cover everybody not 94%.
no..we don't want it but, you said we would cover everybody
if we're not going to cover everybody, tell me again why congress wants to do this, please

Because they want to sodomize you and your heirs in perpetuity……….
Democrat fuzzy math gives me a headache and the urge to kill.
This Health Care Bill has nothing to do with reform or health care. It is all about control of our lives.
Hi Cl and 1RC!
Got about 10 minutes left for the internet, and I thought I would first, thank Andrew B. for this site, thank H and J for the kickoff, but let everyone know that we are spreading the word around the world (not just USA) that this is a place you can get good, solid information about the internal workings of America.. I have friends that I am seeing in Chile tomorrow, and I asked them to logon to this site and let me know that they think…..so be good all of you out there in biggovt world! I loved jumping on tonight, I hope to see you all in a couple of weeks.
They will cover everybody, eventually.
Pelosi's bill calls for health care scofflaws to be thrown in Federal prison, where they will receive health care courtesy of the US taxpayer, and taken off the rolls of the uninsured, thus driving down that statistic. Mission accomplished!
The 6% uninsured are the 6% they haven't caught yet.
Is there any truth to the rumor that those who wrote the code for the East Anglia's climate research center also wrote the code for health care cost program. Bet Gore wish's he had not claimed he invented the internet.
As the great conservative writer Kevin Jackson would say "this reeks of liberal math."
Having lawyers write the health care bill is like having code pink run the war
One of the great canards about healthcare reform is that it will be less expensive. That got me thinking about the current federal heath plan (FEHBP–Federal Employees Health Benefit Program. Just a quick tour of the GAO website produced this gem from 2005: GAO-06-87R Circular A-76 Cost Factor. It appears that the Federally Administered Program grew expenses and premiums at no less than a 10% clip from 1999 to 2005. In the category of laugh out loud at the emperor's new birthday suit, we are delighted to hear that the bill will not only cover a few million more uninsured, but will reduce the deficit as well. Somebody call Jeff Foxworthy, 10% compounded annual growth in costs equals deficit reduction? I know I am not smarter than a fifth grader, but I am smarter than that. How about your Senators? It appears they would all wash out of Jeff's show. Is anyone doing the math up there?

I think you mean Reid's plan will cause 3-6 million more people to join the ranks of the uninsured. 285>282
Had a conversation with LA dentist on reluctant visit and he informed me that his daughter's friends would not graduate high school if they had to pass Algebra.
Okay. LA dentist daughter's friends can't do math. But they can tell you about Global Warming. They don't know algebra but they know climate science.
Am I the Moron here?
From what I can see, it's all about trying to insure the illegals. If some actual Americans actually get covered as well it is icing on the cake for the Libs since they'll make sure to point that out so they can hide the real purpose of health care reform.

I agree. This is just another stop on the line to total government Kontrol. They have been working on this plan for 90 years. They are just a few steps away from achieving their goals. It's now incumbant upon those of us who understand what they are trying to do to stop it. Please please please, anyone who does not understand and wants to keep the government from dictating your choices – in anything, keep reading and talking like the majority of us on BigGovernment.com.
The Democrats are so desperate to pass something on health care…doesn't matter what it is or what it costs….JUST HAVE TO GET IT PASSED!

Thanks for the info! I cannot confirm this, however I have heard thru the grapevine Dr. Michael overcharges insurance
Company's and ask's for kick backs from certain patients. I can't confirm (from personal experience) another issue, however I understand that Dr. M receives kick back's (he calls it consulting fees) from Spine Company's in return for him purchasing their product. HIGHLY ILLEGAL STARCK LAWS. I have I friend that he asked for approx $250,000 in return for purchasing product. My friend refused. The motto with this guy is "YOU CAN'T MAKE A GOOD DEAL WITH A BAD MAN!"
The mainstream media would have a field day with this guy!

Subject: Fwd: Mail Delivery Problem-Carol Marin
Gentleman,
It appears as though, Carol Marin has made a decision that she no longer wants any information about Dr. Ronald Michael and his pals.
This does not bode well for the state of journalism in Chicago. As many of us know, Dr. Michael is a close friend of Tony Rezko. One of my sources informed me that Dr. Michael's family met Tony in Lebanon, before he came to the U.S. to live with the Michael family. This story gets better everyday, so you can imagine my dismay that a veteran like Carol Marin would want to be excluded.
Anyone else want out of their responsibility as a journalist?

Fortunately for Harry Reid, the U.S. education system is turning out millions of innumerates. If you can't do math and can't comprehend numbers, then you just believe what they tell you on TV.
It's amazing how they still continue to get re-elected…..
This bill has nothing to do with health care…it's all about government control! If these idiots pass this bill against the wishes of their constituents, that seems to be reason enough for the citizens to call for impeachment!!!
You could find instant medical insurance at http://bit.ly/7jAGD3
Obama is TANKING in every poll, Obamamania is a TRAIN WRECK… with plenty more disasters to come like huge inflation from the Porkulus and serial foreign-policy blunders.
The Dems face a gruesome bloodbath in midterms next year… some are already predicting a 100 SEAT loss-

Heatth care takeover……that means total control over every single American by the dimwitcrat party and pres. Opompous. Can you say communism?
Reid knows he's toast in 2010…so he's going all the way before it happens.
Harry Reid is a puppet for someone, as usual. I'm wondering who's pulling his strings?
so true…..but also, if the Dems are saying that over 30,000 people die every year because they do not have insurance, don't you think they would want to start their healthplan right away???? not wait four years???? i mean, hell ….that tellls me they are ok with letting 120,000 people die over the next four years……as long as they start collecting taxes immediately….they do not give a damn about the uninsured…..if they did the program would start asap…….it's all about getting full control of the insurance companies, executives, doctors, hospitals, jealthcare workers, unionizing them all with SEIU…..and getting all your personal health and financial banking information into their new govt database………they are not rying to save lives the next four years….hope you are not one of the 120,000 they will let die……..
That's great, tawnyalawyer! Spread the word and give as many others a chance to taste a site that allows everyone to see REAL, unfiltered news.

Most of the American people know this is a bad bill. The Dem’s know this is a bad bill. I just wonder why they’re not listening to us – at least with Hilarycare the listened and scrubbed it.
So why don’t the Dem’s fear the 2010 elections?
