The Party of “No Ideas” Vs The Party of Failed Ideas – The Fight Between Conservatives and the Media on Health Reform
by Derek HunterA friend of mine on Facebook recently wrote the following about an article on the life of the late Irving Kristol:
“Once upon a time, not too many years ago, the Republican Party was the party of ideas. Would even its staunchest supporters say so today? I think not. The sole substance of the Republican Party today is opposition to whatever the Democrats are for, period.”
Were it true, it would be damning. Thankfully it’s not.

My friend, a former White House high-ranking employee in both the Reagan and Bush 41 administrations, grew angry, very angry, about the direction of the Republican Party under President Bush 43, something upon which I agree with him. But, unlike him, I prefer to stay and fight for what’s right within the party I agree with most, not abandon it. He grew so angry that he voted for Obama in 2008. Now, I don’t claim to know how any human being works internally, but I don’t understand how someone who claims to be a conservative could make that sort of switch. Simply because your side didn’t live up to their ideals doesn’t mean, to my mind, that you switch to the side that advocates explicitly the opposite point of view.
But that’s neither here nor there. My friend, and everyone else, is free to vote for whomever they want, for whatever reason they want. What I take issue with his the common mantra of the Left, echoed by my friend, that Republicans are out of ideas and Democrats are a fountain new ones.
What Democrats are proposing, be it on health care, cap and trade, or any other items on their long “to-do” list, is not new. They’re very old, tired and have been proven wrong. Do we really need to create “new” arguments against these heavy-handed government intrusions?
Canada, thanks to lawsuits, is moving towards increasing the role of the private sector in health care. (Nothing like an actual ‘public option’ to focus the mind.) The so-called “green jobs” initiative in Spain has been found to cost 2.2 existing jobs for each job created, a complete failure. If the rest of the world is turning away from these fantasies, what are we doing?
Even as these ideas fail around the world, liberals in Congress and the Obama Administration plow full-speed ahead to force them on us. There’s a joke about the definition of insanity just sitting there, but I’ll allow you to make it yourself.
On the other hand, there are the über-Leftists like those at the New York Times, and their choir on MSNBC that constantly regurgitates the line that Republicans are bereft of ideas. You can’t read the intellectually devoid ramblings of Krugman, Dowd or Rich without wondering what planet they live on (then you realize it’s Manhattan and it begins to make a little sense). And you can’t turn on MSNBC without the latest Media Matters/George Soros talking point coming out of the mouths of Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow or Ed Schultz (though looking at Ed you’d suspect his mouth is a one way street and it’s not out).
“Republicans have no solutions,” “They have no plan,” “They are out of ideas,” are standard fare for these “intellectual giants” while interviewing some committed statist with whom they are 100 percent simpatico. But when your show prep involves what seems to be a T1 line from the Tides Foundation and Moveon.org directly into your teleprompter, intellectual honesty, or even curiosity, simply isn’t in your wheelhouse.
These merchants of dishonesty spread the lie that the George W. Bush years were somehow the glory days of the free market, deregulation and conservative governance. They were not.
They blame much of the economic problems we face today on the Reagan years, in addition to Bush 43, as if government regulatory bodies didn’t exist in these years, or their power was somehow muffled amid a stead shrinking of government power. They also forget the many years in which Democrats controlled Congress and the White House. Listening to the unstable folks at MSNBC, you’d think we had runaway, wild-west conservatism since 1980.
The fact of the matter is this: the solutions proposed today by Republicans–the true, free market reforms, have NEVER been tried. FDR’s wage controls forced employers to marry health insurance to employment, as a way to increase compensation when they weren’t allowed, by federal law, to increase wages. As a result, our health insurance market is targeted to employers, leaving the self-employed or individuals with the short straw.
People are not free to buy health insurance across state lines, but large companies are. Small businesses cannot partner with each other to lower premiums for better health insurance. The federal government prohibits this. The mythical conservative Utopia programmed into the minds of these Chatty Cathy dolls on MSNBC and the Times not only doesn’t exist, it has never existed in the modern age.
So why should conservatives abandon the free market concepts that have proven to work elsewhere in the economy simply because they aren’t “new”? The answer is they shouldn’t. Correct ideas should not be abandoned simply because they’ve been around a while. Yes, they do need to articulate them more often, and more clearly, but to say they have no ideas is simply dishonest.
Then again, you’d have better luck Snipe hunting than finding honesty on MSNBC or the opinion pages of the Times.

I like your posts a lot. They're funny, fun and original. You're cute too.
I saw this pic on craigslst of docs being handed white coats to wear at obama addr to docs about health care reform. http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/rnr/1408617144…. how ridiculous!!!!
Excellent article, and toatly correct.. It is easy for the left to say the right is out of ideas; and easy for the right to say the left has failed ideas. Both arguments have merit, although the truth of the matter is that from FDR forward, the left has had more of an inpact on society with massive government programs, all have which have either failed, or are teetering on the precipice of insolvency.
Perhaps in this new age, with new ideas such as Breitbart, Big Government and a few other innovations, life will once again be breathed into the Grand Old Party. In the interim, I would tend to agree with Madame Peosi; it IS time to drain the swamp. Frankly, she should be the first to depart, and take her kindred soulmates with her.
That would be a novel idea, and while we are dredging the swamp, in the interim, let the free market forces work on their own, without government interference. How is that for new ideas? Capitalism will seek its own level, and find an equilibrium if left unhampered by those who do not understand it.
LOL… Thanks for sharing. I'll give 1000 to 1 we won't see this on CNN, MSNBC, etc.

Conservative ideas emanate from the individual, liberal ideas emanate from the state. Both parties love government as the fountain of power, control, cronyism all things counter to the individual, and by extension liberal. “We the People,” must begin to neuter Washington, and devolve power back to the states. This is a gargantuan task that will require most Americans to stand up and say, NO! As witnessed by the “Tea Parties,” the will is building in our great country, seize the moment America, and get Washington back inside the Beltway. This great country is worth it.
HA! That just makes them look like they're doing a commercial," I'm not a doctor, but I play one for Obama."
My first question regarding this article….how can anyone on the right or even center right agree with ANYTHING that comes out of this current administration or congress? There isn't a morsel of anything that even resembles anything conservative in anything that comes out of this current government! The lefturds arrogantly say that the GOP has no ideas….they have ideas….it's just that none of them can possibly coincide with the dimwitcrats currently running our country! The libturds are sinking fast in the eyes of the majority of Americans today….and just like they stupidly blame Bush for all of their failures, they think that they can take the GOP down with them. Guess again.
Here's a case of a local(Birmingham, Al.)doctor at the White House function. I say she has every right in this country to speak her mind. She's wrong but that's a different matter. Please read some of the comments from the general public. So, she doesn't like George Bush…what a shock!!!

Actually, it is a blame game, a finger pointing festival. The "intellectual academics" on the left have gone to all the right schools, have all the book learning, know all the right things to say; but they couldn't get through a glass door if it didn't have signs on it saying "Push" or "Pull" on it. They have no practical experience, and envision themselves as elite, as Intelligensia, as Enlightened beings. There soul purpose in life, is to guide the poor, the weak, the huddled masses It won't work, it is just Plantation Philosophy at its finest.
Watch this unfold, Jimmah Carter never hit his stride, never got up to speed during his debacle. Obama is going to make Carter look like a gazelle. Or an Olympic sprinter…………….
The reason statists can say the Republicans are "the party of no ideas" or the "party of no" is because the proposals regarding healthcare and medical insurance from the Republicans are not government centered "solutions" To the statist unless an idea is an aggressive control of business to mandate the type of products and/or services provided, shaping their vision of the marketplace, then it is a non-solution, not understanding or perhaps not caring, that shaping of the marketplace has let to the prices of medical insurance. I'm glad there is a "party of no", no the government can't intrude in my life. Sometimes the Republicans fail to live up to that fundamental understanding of limited government, and lead to a good deal of frustration, but unlike Mr. Hunter's friend, I'm not ready to throw the baby out with bathwater. Maybe I'm naive to think that the statist RINO or CINO politicians can change or replaced with people who will be servant with a small limited government dual federalism mentality.
But then again, Mr. Hunter mentioned snipe hunting. When I was young, my older brothers took me out snipe hunting. When they disappeared to flush out the snipe, I simply walked home, leaving them to beat the bushes. Even then I understood, and simply didn't participate.
ACORN to hold Press Conference at 10 AM Eastern time on their "internal investigation." Should prove delightfully entertaining. I hope Ol' Dirty Bertie has a colorful moo-moo on.
Here is a point: How can ANY organization, with perhaps as many as 1,000 employees, 500,000 members and hundreds of millions of dollars being funneled through its coffers conduct an investigation in two weeks. It can't. Their investigation is nothing but foo-foo dust.
Here is the real question for ACORN; did Dale Rathke act alone, or were there co-conspirators that aided and abetted him? Where did the money go, and what was it used for? Was the money used for whores, and let them be specific, were they girls, or little BOYS………………?
Why don't they trot Dale out to discuss his sexcapades?
King Solomon: There is nothing new… There is however several proven frameworks for liberty to thrive among people in society, alas, obamacare is not one of these.
It's easy for the left to paint conservatives as having no ideas, because the left simply plugs their ears and scream "NANANANA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" whenever conservatives start explaining their ideas.
Even if conservatives were putting forth NO IDEAS WHATEVER, it's a major uphill struggle to fight the multiple deceits from the president, congress and the lapdog media.
Sweet baby Jesus on a bed of Romaine lettuce! Excuse me while I go puke. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Obama and a host of faceless characters are all in place to get theirs while the getting's good. I can't decide which kind of Democrat I resent more, the true believer or the con artist.
All of them despise the market, and the "invisible hand" which guides its ebb and flow. In the USSR, when governmental control was as near absolute as it gets, the market was alive and well, reliably dictating true prices, despite the artificial environment in which it operated. It will do the same here, regardless of Obama's wishes.
This is what airhead Obama voters, CNN, Time, Newsweek and the terrorists of the world wanted. Any fool could've seen it coming. When the fecal matter hits the fan, they'll strike their foreheads a la Homer Simpson, and belatedly say, "D'OH!" (Or decry the Bush years…)
There is an ongoing problem with lefty trolls screaming "Where's the Republican health care plan?!"
Apparently if it doesn't take 1000 pages and create huge new government bureaucracies while devouring thousands of tons of taxpayer money, it just does not register as change. They do a great job justifying near-disaster movies, asteroid is kept from destroying Earth at the last minute, massive terrorist attack is narrowly averted, at great, truly gigantic cost. A movie about a tugboat pilot, patiently moving things along and nudging them as needed, would bore them silly.
How do you explain to lefties that when the ocean liner is about to hit an iceberg, simply turning the wheel a bit is better than blowing up the iceberg?
did you see this crap… OMG is CNN in bed w/ this guy or what?

How do we get the word out on what the republician party is saying about Healthcare and how to fix it . Is there a link to it? Is it understandable?
I'll spread the word if it is out there…
Regarding the whole 'picture op with the white coats' – those were all MD's (IF even MD's) that were part of BHO's election campaign – they went through their lists and found some MD's and asked them to come to the WH for a show of force : 'see, these Dr's believe in me, and you should too!'
BHO : we ain't buying what your selling. Photo ops didnt help, but proved how YET again, you are picking ppl who agree with you. The majority do NOT. And that is all that matters.
That White House White Coat photo op, was akin to Jimmah Carters answer to the Energy Crisis: wear an old dardigan sweater, turn down the heat and address his loyal "peeps" with a fireside chat. Good lord, I hope we don't have to go through that again……………..
Ol' Dirtie Bertie is a hoot at the microphone; babbling incoherently about her favorite topic: Bertha Lewis. She is a laugh a minute…….
Well put Stan…
Mr. Hunter makes an obvious, but rarely articulated point. Of course socialism and totalitarianism has been tried before. They have also failed everywhere they have been tried… that is, if your goals are freedom and human rights. But, they can make it work. They're smart enough to draw blood from a stone, to make something work that has never worked before. As Mr. Hunter points out, it's not smart – it's insanity. Somehow, the left passes off these stale, disproven ideas as something new. The old addage is true: those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it. The politicians probably know this, they just choose to ignore it. Unfortunately, most American's are ignorant of history and therefore, buy into these "new" ideas.
Just read an article by Krugman in the NYT. What a load of horse&*$#. They seem to not remember how the left did eveything possible to bring down GWB while we were at war with our boys and girls at risk. They totally miss the point of our reveling at BO losing the Olympics had nothing to do with the stature of the USA and everything to do with defeating another poorly cloaked attempt to further enrich his corrupt cronies in Chicago.
EVERYTHING Obama has done has been to strengthen the unions at the expense of the average citizen, with SIEU at the front. The founding idea of unions was a good one, at the time, but the reality is a complete failure. They are even more corrupt than our federal government, even more corrupt than Chicago politics, if that is even possible. Our best hope is to fully expose ACORN and in the process drag SIEU into the mix. If we can expose the EVIL which is Union's today, we will have a start.
This is just weird…. hold your kids tight and ask questions and attend all PTF meetings for your children.

The Republicans have put forward at least 3 Healthcare proposals. They get absolutely shut down anytime they try to present them to the Dem controlled congress and senate. It is a LIE to say that Republicans have no ideas. When you have a corrupt Dem controlled senate, house, and WH & you are the minority party then all the left has to do is shut you down. Where I get angry is when the Republican Party just takes this lying down and doesn’t point out what is going on. It is their responsibility to FIGHT, it is what we elected them for. I am tired of carrying the water for them with tea parties, 9-12 demos etc…The only thing I’ve heard recently about the Repubs is that McCain is pushing for more Democrat Light. How’d that work out in 2008? We don’t want Democrat Light, we want true conservative ideas. There is an argument that says that we will lose the independants if we keep to our conservative ideals but I totally reject that argument. I’m talking about conservative economic ideas not necessarily social ones. If Republicans will get out there and lay out all the plans they’ve put forward that weren’t given any chance by the Dems then we can counter the left’s lies about how the right has no ideas. Stop letting the Dems set the agenda and narrative.
The ideas from the left continually expand the role of government. Therefore, their question is often, "what's your new idea to solve this problem?" And, just as often, the correct answer is, "that's not the role of government." However, if you accept the limited role of government, you damn sure better fight any expansion. That battle, similar to the battle against terrorism, will never end.
The Republican Party under Bush 43 and the legilature he presided over strayed so far from conservatism, I'd go so far as to say they shifted center/left, I'm not sure the Republican Party can hold together. That philosophical move to the center/left or moderate postion resulted in terrible policy. The result is the Republicans were spanked in the 2006 and 2008 elections. What is astonishing is that even with that spanking, people like Olympia Snowe, John McCain, Colin Powell, and Lindsay Graham want the party to become MORE moderate rather than more conservative.
That is no compatible with the conservatism championed by William F. Buckley, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan. My views are more aligned with the Libertarians than with a moderate GOP. Just as the issue of slavery divided the Whigs and gave birth to the Republican Party, maybe it's time for true conservatives to become Libertarians or create a new party. It's probably political suicide, but I just don't see a way around this ideological dividide.
Please explain to me how the party out of power can promote their "Ideas". What exactly were the ideas of the Dems when they were out of power? After No Child Left Behind there were no agreements between the D's and the R's. The D's never presented any cogent plans or or programs to better the country. How about BHO's ideas that he ran on? He hasn't lived up to ONE of them. The D's have run on helping the common man for so long that we the people don't bother to peel back the cover on the package to see what is really in the box. Mostly socialist programs and loss of personal freedoms.
13 months and counting. WE need to be resolute. Not to be confused with the UN definition of Resolute. We need to keep pulling on that thread till the sweater is all undone. That thread is ACORN and it will lead to the Unions. Redistribution which is the CORE belief of BO is so contrary to what America is all about, will be shown for what it is. The killer of personal ambition and innovation. It is the simple objective of improving your lot in life and having the opportunity to do so is what has made this country. The harder they pull left the more of their agenda comes into view and the more repulsed the center will become.

Did you not notice last January, with snow outside the windows oBam sat in the Oval Office in his shirt sleeves.
While telling us to turn down the thermostat in our homes, Reggie Lowe explained " o is from Hawaii, he likes it warm and keeps the thermostat set at 78 degrees."
A week later when there were traffic problems in DC, because of ice and snow, oBam said something like this-'What is the problem,in my Home Town of Chicago, this wouldn't even be noticed.'

I’m even willing to grant the left that a couple of their ideas worked…. Whether intentional or not, some types of regulation have helped the economey more than they hurt it. By making it safer to invest here since your not [as] worried about being ripped off… Some of their labor ideas were probably for the best too… But they’re still pushing the ideas (today) that failed everywhere they were tried…..
Conservative "ideas" by nature, are rooted in the constitution. So, in a technical sense the charge that we have no "new" ideas is somewhat correct. Why create new ones when the old ones worked? But, just because the democrat party has new ideas doesn't make them good ideas.
I hate sports analogies but, it's like having a play book that took your team to the Superbowl every year that it was used. Then you get a new coach who decides to change all the plays because the "old" plays are not fair enough to the other teams. When the team complains that it is making forcing them to loose when they used to win, the new coach claims they don't have any ideas, that they are selfish, or just want to complain.
The "left" hates the old ideas of the Constitution. Hell, they hate the Constitution. How about this for a "new" idea? The Constitution is the supreme law of the land…let's get back to it!
This positing really reminds me of a lot of my GOP friends and an article in Newsweek that I read (http://www.newsweek.com/id/214253). You'll have to forgive the writing in this article in that it's done by an actual journalist so he won't have sad attempts at sarcasm or simply say "Guh why doesn't everyone get this. Hello Sheeple!" It's a really incitement article on one of the greatest GOP strategists that got Ronald Reagan elected and how the GOP faced irrelevancy after most people in America became left leaning.
Concur.
Thanks
You have HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD!
These "intellectual academics" can be compared, as they do themselves, to ancient Greek intellectuals. But I mean in this sense: That they both abhor the idea of getting their hands dirty. The Greeks sat around and thought. Testing their ideas, the empirical method, was out of the question because that meant physical labor which was reserved solely for slaves. Thus, progress was made in the Christian era of the west when thinkers didn't just ask "Why?" but strove for reason in their quest for answers and based answers on factual evidence.
In summation, we find ourselves in another era of the blind leading the blind.
How will this all play out in the post-Christian, neo-pagan era?
Liberalism vs. Conservatism
Socialism vs. Capitalism
Progressivism vs. Americanism
I think we've a fair idea what the evidence will be.
If the Republican party is to be the party of Goldwater style conservatism, and I'm not so sure that it can be that party, then the party has to purge itself of the big government Republicans who sold out the Reagan Revolution.
The myth that free market capitalism has failed has to be confronted head on. We have not had free market capitalism in the modern era. Take any industry sector you want to talk about and what you will see instead is a rigged system, rigged by crooked politicians in order to reward those that give them money.
If the Republican party is truly to be the party of free market capitalism then the corruption in our political system that makes it not only possible for this kind of rigging to go on, but makes it the standard operating procedure, has to be changed.
I'm not sure how we could change this corrupt system.
I think that it has to start with lobbying. Lobbying has to be declared a high crime like treason. I think we need a constitutional amendment that states that no one can give ANYTHING of financial value to an elected official.
Then there needs to be an amendment which requires that elected officials excuse themselves from being involved in issues where the official has a conflict of interest. Every day we see Congress members voting on issues where the Congress member has a true conflict of interest. This needs to be outlawed.
Once this is done we then have to go industry by industry and dismantle the rigged system that Congress put in place for that industry.
Then there has to be some kind of legal framework put in place where every part of our society, businesses, government, non profits MUST have complete and open transparency about their finances and dealings.
Congress could easily end the way companies can misreport their true financial status by simply making their tax return be their SEC filing, and change the accounting system used to a cash on cash accounting system. If something came in it is a debit, if something went out it is a credit. Companies pay tax on the difference.
Now the company's true financial picture is easy to determine.
We also need amendments that ensure fairness across all industry sectors. For example, capital gains treatment is very different for the housing market than for any other industry. Why is that? If you sell your home, you can easily shield the "profit" from capital gains tax. If we are going to have a capital gains tax, and I think some could argue that we shouldn't have one, then the tax has to be treated the same in all cases. If you buy something at X and sell it at Y you owe capital gains tax on the difference, regardless of the industry.
I could go on and on with all the things that have to be done to give us a truly free market economy, suffice it to say that there is a lot of work to do in this regard. I think for the Republican party to have any credibility they have to take this on.
For the sake of the Union the fight between Progressivism and Americanism must be won. The Constitution must live again.
Wikipedia now acknowledges the Lemming Myth, they do not blindly run off cliffs in mass suicides (go read the debunking for at least one good dark chuckle). But lefties do seem primed for Panicked Mob mentality, enough get worried, go wander around worrying others, critical mass gets reached, POW!
Which by itself would be somewhat humorous to watch, except for those who use the cover to settle old scores, ransack the Treasury, murder our God-given rights, and rape Lady Liberty. Too bad our Second Amendment rights are not more applicable for defending ourselves against politicians and their dishonest cronies.

Sorry, I got credit and debit backwards. It is comes in it is a credit, goes out it is a debit. Tax is paid on the difference.

Like the picture. Maybe you should give credit to the painter. It's called "I Told You So" by E.D. Miracle. He has changed it up several times due to it's use in so many publications and what not. He is a very talented artist who's original oil paintings and fine sculptures are known the world over.
I have a signed copy of "I Told You So" over my desk and another called "Emma" in my living room. If you are into this sort of thing check out his website. http://www.miraclesart.com
Just thought it would be nice to show my respect and give the guys studio a plug.
