Obama votes “present” in health care debate.
by Derek HunterSay what you will about the health reform bill introduced by Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), and the Left is having a field day attacking it, but at least it is a plan. President Obama has spent months talking about what he wants out of a bill, but when the chips are down and the polls are crashing, all we get from him is a two and half page outline. Why would he offer such weak leadership?
One possible answer, for you cynics out there (and I may be one), is that he has zero leadership experience and this is simply his way of voting “present” one more time. But that’s too easy and too amateurish for someone so politically savvy.

The only logical answer is he doesn’t want to be pinned down on any specifics. Sure, he’s talked about what he’d like in a bill, but he’s pretty much disavowed everything he’s said he supports too. He wants a public option one day, but doesn’t need one the next, then explains how it is vital to “real reform.” It literally can’t be both but that hasn’t stopped him from having it both ways.
So at this point, whenever anyone criticizes Obamacare the White House has the perfect defense, “There is no bill.” You can’t win a shadow boxing match, you can’t pick a lock with mashed potatoes, and you can’t pin any unpopular proposals on the President.
This works very well in a campaign because it frustrates your opponent and leaves the public to judge you based mainly on your personality, not your policies. But it’s about as effective a way to lead a nation as would be hiring Kanye West to be pointman for rehabbing your public image.
In 2003, I spent a lot of time fighting the proposed Medicare prescription drug entitlement because it was simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic without addressing the iceberg ahead. Back then, President Bush outlined the reforms he wished to see in Medicare in order to incorporate a prescription drug benefit. Those reforms were good, and crucial to the fiscal health, not only of Medicare but of the country as a whole. But all he did was introduce general principles, not a specific plan; he left the details to Congress. They ended up slapping a massive unfunded entitlement on top of an even more massive unfunded entitlement, patted themselves on the back for being so compassionate and sat back down in their deck chairs while speeding ever faster into the northern Atlantic. President Obama is leading us down the same path.
Real leadership risks unpopularity for righteousness. It was just as bad when President Bush left the wheel for Congressional Republicans to steer as it is for President Obama to hand it to those in his own party.
The American people do not want what Democratic leaders are pushing, but they’ve demonstrated a tin-ear to public opinion, opting for ideology over their duty. This is where strong leadership can play a role.
No one disputes there is room for reform in our health care system; nothing involving human beings is perfect. But by refusing to take a true leadership role, President Obama has allowed the extreme partisans to take over, and he leaves us now with talk of ramming a bill through the Senate by utilizing a budgetary trick called “reconciliation.”
With all the claims of a desire for bi-partisanship, the President doesn’t seem very “bi” curious. Lip-service paid to reform ideas important to conservatives are discarded faster than a wet Kleenex during cold season. If the President isn’t willing to step-up and lead by including real reform ideas important to the Right, like tort reform and allowing the purchase of insurance across state lines, we’re going to end up with a partisan bill that may or may not pass the House, that will need to be rammed through the Senate and will have to be signed by Obama because he’s put all his chips on double zero and a loss would make him less relevant faster than just about any President in history.
All is not lost; not yet anyway. Since he has been so nebulous about his “plan,” he still has time to cobble together a bill that lowers costs and allows more people to obtain coverage without harming the vast majority of Americans that have coverage. But there is nothing in his past or his present that would lead anyone to think he has the spine to do it.
Republicans, for their part, shouldn’t be looking to reinvent the wheel here. Simple reforms, in the form of a simple bill, could be the PR coup they need. Real, simple reform needs to contain the following:
- Tort reform to make it cheaper to be a doctor will make medical care less expensive;
- the ability to buy plans across state lines will allow victims of a state like New Jersey to escape expensive plans due to excessive mandates;
- the ability of like businesses and individuals through civic organizations to band together to have more buying power, therefore obtain lower premiums;
- changing the tax code to treat the individual market the same as the employer provided one;
- refundable and advanceable tax credits for those that explicitly demonstrate need.
Only one of those reform proposals cost money, and only a little. While in a perfect world the government would stay out of the health insurance game, we don’t live in a perfect world. With Presidential leadership these minor tweaks could make a huge difference to all Americans without a massive infringement or take-over of a 1/7 of our economy. That’s assuming making heath insurance is more widely available and more affordable is the real goal, but that’s a question for another day…

"Doesn't want to be pinned down on any specifics"…sounds about right, sadly.
Right and typical.
I wonder how he'd vote on those new ACORN PSAs, a la "Prostitution: Do it for the Children. (An ACORN Public Service Announcement)" at http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...
There just is no doubt O lacks leadership value. It was eviddent when he turned his dreams over to others along with the responsibilty.
Obama is a goverment drug dealer. He has a safe house. He hands out drugs for promises to help him establish his marxist views. He promises a placde in his inner circle.
He is a thuug a creep and just sold the freee world out in the missle shield deal.
This man must go, hopefullly today.
The only reason he is president is because he is black. Now his employees and thugs call us racists for opposing him.
Thank god the military must protect the constituion first.
Here we go again Obama legalize aliens so we can buy their healthcare. Not close the border roundem up and send them home.

It is getting very clear that 0bama’s puppetmasters are making him look like an immature idiot on purpose. That is really mean to do to someone who they know is insecure. Shame on them.
He is just running for office in 2012 of course he does not want to be pinned down. He is running free commercial in Prime time. No substance just Hot Air.
You hit the nail squarely on the head. Obama has zero leadership skills and abilities, he is an ACORN Community Activist. He is weak; listen to his speeches; he is not leading, he is constantly campaigning. Bless his little ol' heart, he doesn't have a clue. Clueless in Chicago just became clueless in Washington, DC. He will set the US back a generation, and will be a weak one term fiasco like Jimmy Carter was. Hopefully, this will set the stage for a Ronald Reagan to step forward and fill the breach. Unfortunately, there are no more Ronald Reagans waiting in the wings………….
Yep, it's looking grim at the White House…but 2012 will come…
Hang in there!
We have decided to start a petition with the intent of obtaining an attorney to start a Class Action lawsuit against the US Government. They have repeatedly ignored our demands, violated our rights, and have been foolish with far to much of our money. If you would like to get involved in a potential Class Action lawsuit against the US Government please sign our petition.
The list is growing please be one of the first to sign it.

We need to find some of the "Carter" campaign stuff from the 70's
I "Sream" at the tv shows when I hear that !!!! The Democrats say that all the time "Well their is no bill yet" when all Americians can refer to is HR3500…
I want to ask them, the why are we here? They want to pass something that as soon as it is passed it can be changed !!!
Dam are we that stupid??? Are we???
Here is one site that has some stuff:
http://www.4president.org/ocmi1976.htm
Yes, it is akin to child abuse………….
Obama reminds me of the old joke – "Are you a man of decisions? Well…yes and no. "
Another demonstration of ugliness on sooo many levels.
His goal is to exceed Jimmy in incompetence. He will do anything to make a new record.

Leadership is about the ability to listen and lead a group of people, something Obama doesn't have a lot of experience in. Blaming everyone else but himself only makes it appear that he's dodging the issue.
Is reform need in health care? Yes, but not everyone's in agreement. A true President would go out to town halls and ask what people want changed. And he wouldn't bring his telepromter with him.
"With all the claims of a desire for bi-partisanship, the President doesn’t seem very “bi” curious. Lip-service paid to reform ideas important to conservatives are discarded faster than a wet Kleenex during cold season."
^Quoted for Truth (QFT)
Republicans have ideas and proposed solutions, Democrats in the House/Senate need to listen more.
Agreed!
He has already surpassed Carter in the first nine months of his Administration……….
It's no wonder we are in the shape we're in because we have become a nation of far to easy forgiving people that are being taken advantage of by the minds of corrupt people with a more sinister agenda that we haven't even been aware of or even used to by this generation. Folks of an unlike mind as the pure will wait years until they believe the old memories are forgotten and then try to convince the young that their ideas are right.
IE: Amadenajad (spelling may be wrong) saying that the holocaust was made up to allow Israel to become a nation.
The guard against attack must be kept strong against the outer forces but more over against the forces from within our one borders. Otherwise we will have lost the war already
Make no mistake about it. This administration is a very intelligent and cunning one and you already see it in the vote taken yesterday concerning ACORN when the funds for education was attached to that vote.
I have long thought that the White House did not care what came out of the House and Senate, so long as something came out. Conference Committee would be where they would supply the bill. Makes it a lot easier that way. Reid, Pelosi pick the members, so you know that what the White House wants, White House gets. Conference report skips committees, goes to floor for up or down vote, no amendments. Republicans shut out with "Well elections have consequences" or other such nonsense. Dems on the fence get to say "Of course it isn't perfect, but we HAD to do something." Legislative leadership failed him by thinking what they were doing might actually have made a difference.
Obama – that is not a plan, it's a wish-list. A plan is actually written in legislative form – oh, but you wouldn't know because for the 150 days you were senator, you had so many "NV"'s (Not Voting) – that it hurt my eyes to look at it during your campaign as you stated where you stood on issues.
This guy is as clueless about legislation as 1/2 the people running DC.
btw – I'm protesting "firebreathinchristian" everytime he/she posts his/her website. With this:
Quit advertising your website here – this is biggovernment's site – not a place for you to promote yours!!!
Are you kidding. He doesn't have to be made to look that way when he can't even take responsibility for his own office.
NOT the sign of a true leader when you want to blame someone else for everything that gos wrong.
I think I finally figured out why Obama is not clear on details of his plan. I think that behind the scene there are many special interest groups putting in their thoughts and ideals and he is deal making and trying to keep them all happy. Can you imagine trying to please SEIU, the AFL-CIO, Steelworkers, Teamsters, and Autoworkers unions at the same time? He did say "they would have a seat at the table", and I think we just can't see the table to know who is there. Oh, and also don't forget the Czar's
I in my world take the potus to be my personal enemy. He wants me out of the way and he doesn't care how that is accomplished.
I'm certain that the healthcare bill is EXACTLY how Obama wants it.
Under Obama's tutelage, ACORN counseled women how to obtain "free" taxpayer paid Medicaid abortions.
They simply claimed that they were "raped".
No police reports had to be filed.
When HHS noticed that Illinois rape numbers tripled the national average, they got right on it. NOT!
That's ONE reason why Obama doesn't want to seriously address Medicaid and Medicare fraud and abuse!
He's good at finding abortion loopholes, I'm sure he's going to be desperately searching for a loophole through which he can escape the Presidency soon!
I don't think Obama speaks in generalities to avoid being pinned down or from a lack of leadership. I think Obama is so non-specific because he really doesn't know what he's talking about. Yes he's a lawyer and yes he's a charasmatic speaker, but that's where it ends. He has absolutely no understanding of economics, how to run a legitimate business, or even a common sense understanding of how the world works. I often joke that Obama is to Math and economics what Bush was to English and speech.
Obama lives in a fantasy world of faux virtue that is not constrained or anchored in any economic reality. He is a man guided solely by good intentions, but with no comprehension of the unintended consequences of his actions and policies. Lastly I think he has surrounded himself with a bunch of like-minded idealogues who at best are afraid to tell him "no that won't work" and at worst are covertly implementing their own twisted agendas for CHANGE We Can Believe In.
Quit right. That's why he was able to receive so much money during his campaign. Let alone the money from corrupt organizations.
I mentioned a while back that the mafiosi wasn't dead, Not by a long shot. Someone has already brought to light that they are now involved in the healthcare (medicare) industry.
Why does that surprise me.
He doesn't want us "out of the way" but under his thumb (or sickle, if you prefer). I'll tell you, if we could divide the country right now in half, put the libs in one part and the conservatives in the other – look at their development over the next 10 years – we could see that once again, soci"a"lism does not work. The conservative half would be flourishing and the liberal half would look like Cuba.
The most important thing to Obama is that it extends government power, and costs lots and lots of money. Everything else is irrelevant.
The thing that has struck me most about the zero is how he is always in “candidate mode”. He acts as if it’s September 2008 not 2009. Someone needs to tell him that he won. Oh yeah that’s right he knows. Isn’t that what he said earlier this year when he was asked to be bi-partisian? Didn’t he answer “I Won”? Well someone needs to tell him that a President needs to govern. Looks to me like the office of the POTUS is way above his paygrade. That’s ok zero we will graciously accept your resignation. Joe Biden is dumber than a box of rocks and that is preferable to a liar with a chip on his shoulder.
I'm afraid it is something more dark than any of the above theories. It would be true to form for him to propose a completely new healthcare bill, containing everything that the Left wants and then insist that it be passed quickly. I believe that this bill is already waiting and all he is waiting for is some concocted emergency to force a move.
I agree.
"United we stand, divided we fall", seems to be the theory now days. That seems to be their goal.
Obama takes "lipstick on a pig" to a whole new level!!
I seriuosly think that Rush Limbaugh had an excellent idea – get a panel of psychiatrists on Foxnews to explain Obama's narcissism. It's called Pathological Narcissitic Personality Disorder. NPD.
You certainly cannot get an argument out of me for that thought. There is not a true american bone in his body, nor an american cell in his pathetic brain.
The problem is, you can't argue "issues" with this adminstration, because they just ignore facts. You have to go deeper and expose the mindset of their avoidance. They are not about the truth and facts, but pushing a self-rgitheous power trip agenda.
The problem is, you can't argue "issues" with this adminstration, because they just ignore facts. You have to go deeper and expose the mindset of their avoidance. They are not about the truth and facts, but pushing a self-rgitheous power trip agenda. And the latest avoidance tactic is calling race and violence.
obama hasn't read the bill (or whatever there is of it on paper). See the sept 16 white house press briefing where a reporter actually asked. Gibbsy got all wee weed up and angry.
It sure would be nice if they would (could) just put this out for the nation to vote on. So ACORN wasn't involved, maybe we could have a REAL vote instead of a sham.
The only problem with that is it puts Nancy Pelosi only one heartbeat away from the Presidency, even if only temporarily.
That, in it's self, is a scary thought.
The fact is that Obama's popularity is the only chip the democrats have left to play… well and that whole race card thing. However, I digress. If he were to lay out a real bill, he would be susceptible to much of the same criticism that Baucus is presently experiencing. The democrats want to keep him as a figurehead and out of specifics so he can do what he does best: speak in generalities and make people "feel good." They will leave the criticism to the smaller players.
I tend to think that it goes a little deeper. Truth be told that Obama is not a leader, nore even remotely demonstrates even the remotest sense of leadership qualities, but I tend to think that he knows he cannot be honest with what he really wants. It is my contention that if he was, he would be overwhemlingly rejected by the American people. Once people strarted understanding what he really wants in a healthcare bill, the people rejected it hands down. Everything he is doing now is just lip service, as you eloquently put it. First impressions are the most memorable, and look at HR3200 as it was originally. To tie in with Ramussens poll, I would bet only abotu 20% would actually want it.
When ever someon e says that Obama is a gifted speaker and has charisma, I always finish the sentence (in my mind) to include And Michelle Obama is the most beautiful woman and first lady EVER. The media has been selling the Michelle beauty and Barry gifted speaker ;meme for so long, it is easier for me to not get irritated by it if I turn it into the joke it is.

LiberalHypocrit
"..non-specific because he really doesn't know what he's talking about""
"..man guided solely by good intentions,"
Can maybe agree with the first but not the second.
Maybe I should be more clear on the second one then. He is guided by what "he believes" are good intentions. Not what the rest of us consider to be good intentions.
Just like they did with TARP, stimulus, cap-n-trade and the 1K+ earmark budget. Next up – amnesty.
Living in a perfect world doesn't mean you abandon your ideals. The Constitution does not support any mandated altruism. Pure and simple.
The reason Obama is preseident is because he is b lack AND a Dem; not to mention the fact that GOPers need to close all of their primaries. McCain's "win" was rigged by nonGOPer voters and the MSM.
Abso-friggin'-lutely!
Obama has to be one of the worst presidents we have ever had, even worse than Carter the race bater. We are being sucked into the black hole of communism at a very fast rate. We are approaching the Event Horizon at a ever quickening pace, if we do not exicute an about face soon we will all suffer in the bowels of collectivism.
God help us !
The reason that Obama is president is because he's black. The libs found their "boy". If he wasn't black do you seriously think that a man with his background and experience would get elected president?? Get real!
And then the libs have their nerve to call "racist". !! Oh, the hypocrisy.
You don't understand, The Apollo Group, ACORN and the SEIU, haven't written the bill yet. Until they have, Obama doesn't know what to load into the Teleprompter.
[...] define what he believes. It got him elected, I guess he thought it would work for health care too. Big Government Blog Archive Obama votes “present” in health care debate. Anyone else like the successories style picture in the article? [...]
The Problem with this president is that he is indeeed a community organizer's lawyer not the organizer himself. And i think when you run for office you should at least be able to organize for yourself and not just be the organizer's lawyer. And he is one of the worst Presidents due to the fact that with all of his rheotric he can not speak for himself but has members of his cabinet and party do it for him. And I Understand that he does want to be the "put my foot down", or forceful president that Bush was but there has to be a difference between being an understanding and caring president and being a push over where his own party, cabinet members, Special interest groups, and other world leaders just push over and get you to do whatever is convient for them

People remember a Community Developer is not a leader, they are facilitators to group process. The facilitator asks open ended questions, encourages debate from a select group of experts(?), and waits for a response to write it on the flip chart. They do not own the information coming back from the participants that is why O is not a leader and is incapable of speaking intelligently without a teleprompter, the decisions are not his, they're group process.
There are far more questions than answers. Remember, President Obama said "No illegal aliens will be covered."
This could be entirely true, yet those who are presently illegal aliens could be covered. The Presidential Power of the pardon would make the illegal aliens legal. If the President pardons illegal aliens they would no longer be illegal aliens.
THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES
Article. II. – The Executive Branch
Section 2 – Civilian Power over Military, Cabinet, Pardon Power, Appointments
The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States,
and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United
States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the
executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective
