Should Christians Use Saul Alinsky’s Tactics in Exposing Corruption?
by Doug GilesA Christian pundit, Dawn Eden, thinks my daughter Hannah Giles and her partner James O’Keefe should not have used Saul Alinsky’s deceptive tactics against ACORN because Saul was “evil,” his methods sneaky, and he dedicated his book, Rules for Radicals, to Lucifer.
In addition, Eden took a swipe at Lila Rose, Planned Parenthood’s main pain in the butt, for being deceptive in her undercover vids which exposed Planned Parenthood’s illegal activity. Oh, and I almost forgot: Dawn also busted on Hannah for being un-Christlike for wearing a miniskirt and dressing like a hooker. Sounds a little catty to me—and a wee bit like Dana Carvey’s Church Lady—but I digress.
First off, Ms. Eden, if you ever drum up the nerve to expose a scandalous multimillion dollar Obama-backed, taxpayer-funded organization for doing illegal crap and then undergo death threats (versus sitting on the sidelines and simply critiquing those who have the cojones to do so) you will find that the lawbreakers are rather reticent in telling journalists, who are intent on exposing and destroying their world, exactly how they’re breaking the law. Yeah, I know. It’s weird, eh?
You’d think that nefarious organizations would just spill their guts, throw up their hands, give up their hard drives, refrain from dumping tens of thousands of documents in a dumpster, and just cooperate to the fullest extent with the FBI and the DOJ, but alas, they don’t because they’re criminals, and criminals, generally speaking, aren’t known for truthfulness, contrition and full disclosure with cops.
Therefore, most of the time when journalists, Christian or not, want to get the 411 on a reprehensible group, they usually have to fly under the radar, you know, by being misleading, going stealth, acting like serpents, slithering in and getting the apple in front of the culprit and seeing if they’ll take the bait. Deception is a given in the truth seeker’s toolbox when it comes to dealing with slippery critters who won’t easily spill the beans. It’s called hunting. Haven’t you ever watched a Jason Bourne movie, seen Barney Fife in action, or read Joshua or Judges? Geez, Dawn. Come to speed, why don’t cha?
For frail Dawn, the deceptive tactics Giles, O’Keefe and Rose employed in exposing crappy cabals like ACORN and Planned Parenthood present a pious conundrum because she sees deceit, in all forms, as evil; according to her read of the Bible, sweet Jesus would never give the thumbs-up to a believer to participate in that kind of devilish activity.
No, for Dawn, we must pray, be more “mature,” take the high road, wait a million years, come through the front door with a press pass around our neck, and tell the twisted that the USA and Jesus would really appreciate it if ACORN and Planned Parenthood would confess their sins, close down their operations, and become a Ben & Jerry’s.
Here’s my take on whether or not Jesus and the Bible are cool with deceit for righteous purposes. First off, when I’m talking about Jesus, I’m talking about the one in the Bible who methodically made a whip and beat the religious hucksters out of the temple (that’s not very Christlike, eh Dawn?), purposely picked fights with sanctimonious toads and political pukes, and instructed his disciples to be “shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves” (Mt. 10:16). Or, as my King Doug Contra Mundus Translation interprets the original Greek text, “be as clever as the Devil.” Yep, good old Jesus said it’s okay to imitate the serpent in regard to cleverness; just be righteous in spirit and desired goals.
From what I know from my own serious Christian kid and O’Keefe (as well as Rose, via several interviews with her), their motivations were pure in that they wanted to sink these two sucky organizations—organizations, mind you, that are on tape aiding and abetting underage prostitution, home loans for multiple whorehouses, money laundering, tax fraud, millions of abortions, and not just any old abortions but abortions for underage girls (without their parents’ knowledge or consent) who have been the victims of statutory rape.
The reason I believe Jesus wouldn’t give a flip about these three heroes’ mad methods but would instead applaud their efforts is because the Scripture doesn’t condemn:
- Rahab, a real whore, for her sleight of hand with the Canaanites
Gideon’s pretense with his small army
Abraham’s lie regarding his wife
King David’s feigned madness before King Achish.
Real life is war, sweetie pie, and I hate to burst your smug balloon, my dear Dawn, but sometimes playing dirty for noble reasons is the right thing to do.
With Eden’s edict banning deception, it follows that Christian cops couldn’t do their fabulous undercover work; Christian soldiers couldn’t wear deceptive camo or take on local dress in order to whack the Taliban; Christian CIA ops would have to wear dove and fish T-Shirts instead of their Simon Templar garb; and the amazing Christians who lied to the murderous Nazis would all be uniformly condemned for fibbing about the whereabouts of precious Jews they were hiding.
Lastly, Dawn, at the end of the day, I believe Hannah, James and Lila will get mad applause in heaven as they are here on earth for exposing ACORN and Planned Parenthood’s hellish practices. I know, as a Christian, I prefer their ways of doing things to your way of not doing them. Amen.

Great article! If this were only the paradise that Dawn is wanting so bad, deception wouldn't be an issue! Everyone would automatically tell the truth and there would be no lies to uncover…however in the real world , in order to get to the bad guys, you have to act like one of them or you are not accepted into their den of corruption…hence the ACORN debacle…thanks to Hannah and James we AL know what goes on under the radar at these corrupt organizations that have been taking our hard earned tax dollars for years…What would Jesus do? He would grab his whip and make His point…What would Mohammad do? That monster would cut off the head of anyone trying to expose him for the pedophile and tyrant he really is!

The enemy that expects a moral and objective adversary to play by the "rules" is a foolish enemy. THey were taken off their guard by a pair of unkown journalists who knew that there was illegal activity takng place with our tax support dollars and they should be rewarded for exposing the corruptio. I admire those two kids for putting what could easily have been their lives on the line given the boiler room mentality of ACORN and the SEIU who are working hand in hand to help Che Maobama radically change the American way. Mr. Giles, you would be heartened to read exactly how William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, earned his stripes, so to speak. He used an even seedier sort of deception, and a younger girl than your own valiant daughter, to rout a hellish but trendy crime amongst the London elite: child prostitution.

Saul Alinsky, in what may have been his last interview, sat with Playboy Magazine in 1972. He was quoted, in terms of his tireless work for God and the rest of us, as follows.
“I love this goddamn country, and we’re going to take it back. I never gave up faith at the worst times in the past, and I’m sure as hell not going to start now. With some luck, maybe I’ve got ten more good productive years ahead of me. So I’m going to use them where they count the most.”
Then, less than a year later, he had a heart attack and died. Thank God.

Absolutely use their tactics against them. Expose them and exploit them at any cost. These hypocrites love to throw stones at glass houses except when that house is their own. All is fair in love and war and cultural degeneration is an act of WAR.
The ACORN sting brought to light exactly what I would expect to see. But those people couldn't do what they do without help from above. They didn't start the organization and they don't fund it. Here's an idea for the next round: I was at a luncheon recently and the woman across from me, after confessing to being an "unrepentant liberal," volunteered that she hated people who "shopped at Walmart." How about if Hannah and James had some dinner parties for their liberal friends and, instead of arguing with them, let them tell us what they think on film. They wouldn't need any deception at all.

Christ admonished us to protect the innocent, and what Hannah, James and Lila Rose did was to expose the wolves in sheep’s clothing who seek to co-opt and corrupt the innocent.
Adopting Alinsky like tactics, is not adopting Alinsky’s intent, there’s a vast world of difference, that Ms. Eden is either ignorant of or indifferent to. They weren’t looking to defraud innocent people, they were looking to expose those who would.
As a former liberal democrat, I feel a great burden for defending my former party all the years that I did, because I was duped. I can only imagine what happens when an innocent person is taken in by these organizations. All three of these brave, ethical and decent young people entered what could be likened to the lion’s den, and exposed great wrongs, and they’re being pilloried by the left wing for daring to do so. They deserve our utmost respect and support because of their courage of their convictions. I dare say they’ve gone a long way in curtailing the brazen attitudes of ACORN and Planned Parenthood had, and I do believe they’ve prevented many from becoming victims of those organizations.

Perhaps deception in the name of the Christian faith is wrong (i.e. Paul denying Christ to save his own skin) but I fully believe that deceit for the sake of protecting others, which is exactly what Hannah and James did, is perfectly alright. Otherwise, you're sitting back and allowing others to suffer so you can keep your hands all nice & clean.

I'm not a Christian, so some may think I speak out of turn, but isn't taking this high-minded approach playing into the hands of the left? What is Cloward-Piven, if not a subversive program meant to prey upon the (in mind misplaced) desire to care for our fellows' welfare through government, as a way to destroy the system?

I happen to be married to one of these religious (rose colored glasses there is always a better way) fanatics. These are people that are fully indoctrinated and mentally "structured" to ONLY ONE WAY of thinking. They are robots of sorts. It's a sad thing. There arguments are not premise driven and lack sylogistic logic. It's is comparable to arguing with an irrational mind. You cannot win. Now…having said that…
People like Dawn have NO solutions to complicated indoctrinal patterns utilized by the Alinsky's of the world. These are the same stunted mentalities that we graduate from liberal arts universities. I have no idea who Dawn is or exactly what her heart holds vis a vis faith. Most of us Christians believe that this life is but a temporary stop on the way to eternity. That said, I gotta go with action in these times. Christians are to show the world who Christ is by living the way we do. Christ kicked the crap out of merchants because he was offended by their location (Temple). Likewise, there are plenty of New and Old testament citations regarding choice, cause and effect, etc., i.e.- you often get what you deserve. Our nation probably deserves acorn, and that's because WE aren't properly managing the situation.
So for Dawn, the question should be, "Would Jesus allow acorn to operate in Heaven?" AND "If He was just a regular guy without the firepower of the Holy Trinity, what means could he employee to bring them down?" Kinda leads me toward Jimmy and Hannah…

Someone who has adopted liberal progressive views even when they are anti-thetical to regular Christian belief. These would be people who support abortion (and not limited to emergency abortion), feel that God would sanction homosexual marriages (there is a difference between believing that homosexual partners should have legal equality granted through government and believing that such a union should receive holy blessing), and the idea of an earthly, one-world Utopia. Generally, they preach only about God's universal love and tend to leave out a lot of the consequences of engaging in sin. After all, God forgives everything, so why worry if you slip up?
So long as folks are willing to openly admit going undercover to expose truth, there is no shame in doing so. The difference between what these two patriots did and the true Saul lovers is that in the end, the Saul lovers don't admit to their own behavior or the ends they seek to achieve.

In the story of the Good Samaritan, it wasn't the two pious Jews who received a blessing for standing by and doing nothing. So, to me, Dawn can pay lip service to her faith all she wants, but if she isn't willing to stand up and fight for those things she says she believes in, it will ultimately matter for naught when the tally is taken at the Pearly Gates.
Hannah and James may have used methods many on the left don't approve of having used against them, but they did so to expose great wrongs and injustices, a literal snake taken to the bosom of the US and nourished by the tax monies of all of us, believer or no.

I admire the courage that James, Hannah, and Lila exemplified by crawling into the snake pits of corrupt and criminal enterprise. Thank God not all are being poisoned with progressive educations.
Using Ms. Eden's logic, Jesus Himself would have committed sin by posing as just a regular man for most of his life. As others have written in this thread, her logic just simply falls apart.
And I am very curious what people of other faiths would say about this, especially faiths which tend to preach peace and pacifism, such as Buddhism. I don't think this is simply a Christian dilemma.
Part I
I’m certainly no fan of Acorn, by ANY stretch, but I have to admit, I was a bit bothered by the deception tactics. Call me old fashioned, but I guess I’ve been along long enough to know that the reason God allows evil is always for a greater good; best example, Christ’s own Deicide. The killing of Christ brought about salvation, and for any true Christians, there simply is no greater example of “good from evil.”
There is also a good chance we are simply getting what we deserve. In defense of Dawn, I’m not sure she isn’t right. While I can go along with some “equivocation” for the protection of human life, as in “hiding someone from a murderer”, this simply wasn’t “life and death.”
Part II
For all who feel so enraged at Dawn, I ask you, how much did YOU do over the years to keep God in the public square BEFORE our once great nation started to become engulfed in the current cesspool? Things are always easy in hindsight, but the real time to “jump in” IMO, and the real “Christian” way was to speak out WHILE the corruption was happening, not after the fact.

If anyone is still not convinced, (although by the tone of all who posted, I’m certainly not expecting anyone to be converted), look at the condescending tone of Doug Giles? Christianity starts with the way we treat others, especially a “fellow Christian” like Dawn Eden. For goodness sakes, she was defending Christ, not satan! While I abhor what Acorn does and stands for, I could think of many, other, and non deceptive ways to have exposed this. Remember, America voted Obama in, choosing to vote in a not only a baby killer, but a corrupt politician from which most turned a blind eye. I’m not sure that makes any who did any better than Acorn.
Part IV
Last but not least, I don’t know the true intentions of these two “undercover” agents, but a good possibility exists that in this world of realty TV, the greater motive was not the “greater good” more than the next ‘wanna be’ news anchor(s), perhaps even fostered by a vicarious father. It certainly would be a justified reason for a professed Christian dad to take an un Christian-like attitude towards a good Christian women like Dawn Eden.
While what they did wasn’t the worst of crimes, being that it wasn’t “life and death”, and much a result of our own doings (or NOT doing) as a country, I’ll take Dawn Eden’s side on this one. Deception is deception. There were better ways to handle this, but unlikely to get one on Hannity.

Anyway, the Dutch family ten Boom comes to mind, 2 sisters had differing opinions on whether or not to lie to the Nazis when asked of the whereabouts of Jews. Evidently this caused some friction as one cd. imagine. In the end an informant turned them in-someone known to them-and the elderly father and one sister died in a concentration camp. They were hiding Jews in their home and assisting in other ways as well. Book and film: The Hiding Place. I was in India about 1990 and a group I was visiting had a speaker Wurmbrand who spoke of his experiences under various occupying forces in his native Romania (Nazis, Fascists, Communists) and how he, as a pastor (and as a Jew). had to lie in order to protect others. This caused a buzz in some circles amongst the Christians there. I'm sure there are countless stories that cd. be told from way back to present.
BTW a very early ex. from the Old Testament: Pharoah had designs on killing male Hebrews of a certain age. The Hebrew midwive lied which the child Moses life. That passage mentions that the midwives did what was pleasing in the sight of God.

Dawn wasn't defending Christianity, she was judging the actions of others and proclaiming them to be sin, which is a job I believe is reserved for the one, the only God.

Klaire, a few minor questions. How do you know that Dawn is a good Christian woman? What is the definition of un-christian? Is it similar to that of the un-Cola? Never had it, never will? To paraphrase what you've said a is a "good possibility," I think you're projecting. With no (to my knowledge) evidence, you assign motives, you insult the relationship of of Mr. Giles and his daughter, and you seem to believe the evil should be allowed to succeed unless we can talk it to death. Even then, you'd probably come out against harsh language. Given that all it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing, what have you done to battle evil today?

Lots of Alinsky-ites in these recent comments. There's an obvious attempt to make Hannah and James appear unethical by misinterpreting Christianity. Being deceptive in order to fight corruption, evil, etc. is not unethical or sinful. The Christian (and Jewish) ninth commandment is "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." not simply "not lie." The meaning of the ninth commandment is this – Don't slander or libel.
It is unethical and sinful to accuse someone of doing something that they did not. It is unethical and sinful to remain silent when you know that someone is being falsely accused.
It is not unethical and sinful to pretend to be a criminal in order to expose criminals' schemes.
In other words, it is not un-Christian to lie – if the lie is used to reveal the truth!

If Rahab was called a whore, and people knew she had men coming and going all the time, that would indicate she sold more than linens, women dealt with that, and this story doesn't say she only dealt with women selling sheets.
Also, she hid them in a pile of straw, not a pile of clean linens.
You just want to put your own spin on this instead of reading what was written and believing that someone actually wrote what they meant.

There are a lot of misconceptions and mistranslations in yhe Bible. I tend to believe what my pastor and Bible scholar teaches. For instance- do you believe that it is a sin to eat an apple? Or do you really think that it was Jews that crucified Christ?
………….As far as judging Hannah and James, that's not our duty, it's reserved for God.Every person has freewill to accept or deny the Truth that dwells within. One's motives for their actions are hidden to the outside world, God knows all.
As for myself, I applaud Hannah and James for their intestinal fortitude in revealing the Truth.
