Constitution Is Inherently Principled, Not Progressive
by David J. BobbIn their recent Politico article, “Constitution is inherently progressive,” John Podesta (former chief of staff to President Clinton and current president of the Center for American Progress) and John Halpin argue that the “values” of the Constitution are progressive, not conservative, and that conservatives should stop claiming that progressivism is at odds with the Constitution. “Since our nation’s founding,” the authors claim, “progressives have drawn on the Declaration of Independence’s inspirational values of human liberty and equality in their own search for social justice and freedom.” The progressive “framework” of public-private cooperation, they continue, is “the essence of the constitutional promise of a never-ending search for ‘a more perfect union.’” In short, the progressive “vision” of the Constitution best represents the American tradition. This argument, which is part of recent progressive efforts to rehabilitate their constitutional bona fides, might come as a surprise to the real founders of progressivism, for while some contemporary progressives might preach a Declaration-based faith and try to get right with the Constitution, early progressives had little use for either document.
According to Woodrow Wilson, what he called the “preface” of the Declaration of Independence—the part about “self-evident truths,” “unalienable rights” given to human beings by the Creator, and the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God”—was not the “real Declaration of Independence.” If you want to understand that, Wilson said, “do not repeat the preface.” For Wilson, the point of the Declaration—and the Constitution, too—was not the permanence of any principles. “No doubt,” he wrote, “we are meant to have liberty, but each generation must form its own conception of what liberty is.” The Founders, early progressives held, wrote for their own time in our first documents, but not for future generations. For Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Croly, Frank Goodnow and other founding fathers of progressivism, the Constitution of the American Founding was an obstacle to be overcome. Insisting that the Constitution must be interpreted in view of the new but increasingly dominant Darwinian model of constant change, progressives pronounced our Constitution a “living” document. The Constitution, they believed, is as malleable as human nature itself. The Founders’ old ideas about separation of powers could be discarded in favor of new and improved notions of “enlightened administration.”
Podesta and Halpin allege that conservatives “often mask social Darwinism . . . in a cloak of liberty,” but in fact it is progressivism whose roots run deepest in the political ideology of Darwinism. The fittest among us, it turns out, are the bureaucrats, empowered by a Constitution whose original restraints, like federalism and the limitations imposed by enumerated powers, have been stripped by progressives in favor of a more “dynamic” model.
In rendering the Declaration a dead letter, and the Constitution a “living” document, early progressives saw the Founding as something to be surmounted, not celebrated. Citing with approval Franklin Roosevelt’s 1944 State of the Union, in which he proposed a “new economic Bill of Rights,” Podesta and Halpin neglect to mention that in his speech, FDR used the past tense when he referred to the original rights of “life and liberty.” Wishing to add material “security” guaranteed by the federal government to the list of rights all Americans should enjoy, FDR might have revealed something significant in his use of the past tense: when the federal government oversteps its original, limited aims, it will end up undermining the natural rights it was originally charged to protect. Happiness is much more difficult to guarantee than a right to the “pursuit of happiness.” A government responsible for a people’s every material need can more easily end up not being responsible to the people themselves.
Constitutional conservatives reject the New Deal and Great Society as “aberrations from American norms” not because conservatives are for unsafe food, corporate exploitation of children, and the perpetuation of poverty. Rather, conservatives reject the New Deal and Great Society—and their progressive underpinnings—because they are incompatible with the bedrock principle of constitutionally limited government. Contemporary progressives glide over that part of their own history and tradition that disdains the Founders, and in a slick sleight of hand try to convince us today that the real progressive forefathers are Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. However, according to the late 19th and early 20th century intellectual progenitors of progressivism, the core ideas of the American Founding were not just inadequate, but bankrupt. Progressives today cannot both revile those foundational ideas and revere their promise.
The Constitution did not set out on a “never-ending search for ‘a more perfect union’” because its framers knew that perfection would always elude politics. This does not mean that the Founders did not aim high. On the contrary, their “more perfect union” marked a dramatic improvement over the old Articles of Confederation, and over every other previous political regime in history. In establishing a Constitution firmly rooted in the enduring principles of the Declaration of Independence, the Founders gave us a gift whose real staying power is lost when it becomes a “living” document as dictated by progressivism.

There is nothing American about the progressive movement and is outright laughable that the Constitution is a progressive document.
The Constitution = Limited Government, self responsibility, liberty.
Progressivism = Nanny State, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Mine Mine Mine.
"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." ~ John Adams
John Podesta is a donkey-sexual.
"the constitution of the american founding is an obstacle to be overcome", kinda says it all doesnt it.
This is a meme we see time and again from the left. They proclaim that the founding fathers were radicals, and thus today's radicals are their heirs.
Nonsense. Much like the obamabots' mantra of "change," one has to ask the questions "change from what?" and "change to what?"
“progressives have drawn on the Declaration of Independence’s inspirational values of human liberty and equality in their own search for social justice and freedom.”
( Their own search for social justice and freedom)
So again we have a group of people that think they know better than the founders. People that have separated themselves from e pluribis unum.
The funny thing is, when you really sit down and argue with a progressive, you find they don't have any effing clue, but man do they have talking points, none of which are grounded in fact.
I would liken progressives to a people that come along and want to reinvent the wheel. The rest of us know the wheel works fine, but we have to put up with the progressives incessant desire to feel so self important that it is them that is going to reinvent the wheel, and everyone else is going along for the ride.
I think they all need to be re-educated, or beaten into a sense of reasonableness
Missy you are kind this morning. I cannot print how I feel about Podesta.
The title "Mr. Fister" was already taken by Kevin Jennings….
Government of, by and for the people is a principle that must never fail in America. We are a Representative Republic and must remain diligent if we are to keep it so…..there is no room for progressivism, liberalism, communism, sharia or any other failed ideology……its that simple……
I have read the Declaration and the Constituition many times in the last few years. When I compare what the documents offer to what we have today I shudder. Bastardized is the only word that comes close and I reckon a dozen or more adjectives added before and after might express 50% of the problem. Progressivism…something that sticks to your shoe in a dog park…yeck!
We should enforce the principle that the Supreme Court may never over rule a previous Supreme Court decision. Any change after the first interpretation should require a constitutional amendment.
Hahahahahahahahahaha….well done, thanks for the laugh! On a side note I feels like someone is attempting a denial of service attack against this site. Page flashing and difficult to post since yesterday AM. Anyone else seeing the same?
"………Constitution Is Inherently Principled, Not Progressive……"
Thanks for conducting today's choir practice there Mr. Bobb, and,……..
by now, we should all be in tune, but,…
don't ya think that,…..
it's time we start conducting services.
Occasionally…
The Constitution is principled…… so that's why liberal's hate it so much and want to change it.
We have a duty, each one of us as Americans to determine if the Constitution was built on a rock, or was the Constitution built on sand. Once we understand this we will be able to determine our future as a country.
As a rock we are able to change this countries position with careful foresight and planing. If we are built on sand we are able to change our country as the wind blows.
I agree 100%. I have drawn the personal conclusions that Congress has grabbed too mucho power for themselves. We need to enact term limits, campaign finance reform, and Congressional Ethics enforcement must go back to we the people. By the current rules we are just pissing in the wind. Oh and all those ideas must be approved by Congress. Congressmen and women or Overlords? 2012 is on the way, I hope everyone chooses for themselves!
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
I would like to see this progress.
The Declaration of Independence is a "Bill of Divorcement" from the European Religious and Political Powers.
Then, we receive our Rights and Blessings from the biblical, Creator God. Those are listerd in Deuteronomy Chapter 28. However, this is a Conditional Promise, that we have to maintain a good degree of morality, then the Blessings are Automatic.
So, now we have a Bill of Rights, Constitutional Rights and so on…The Early Colonialists had a Limit to their God-Given Rights, as that was the Biblical Guidelines of Morality.
They used the Geneva Bible primarily instead of the K.J.V. which was "skewed" somewhat to promote the Customs and Traditions of the Roman Popes.
Here's a Christian Political Site: http://www.constitutionparty.org There's 40 issues listed, by category with the Constitutional Answer using the Early Colonialists Point of View.
Our very lst Founding Document was the Mayflower Compact.
2nd Worst POTUS after our current progressive! The most vile, group of human beings, Soros,Clinton,Obama,Kerry,Edwards ,Sen. John McCain,Sen Linsey Grahm I think I'm going to be I'll when I think about what they've done to America and her people and the slavery that awaits US unless we vote them all out.
"Public – Private Partnership" is how you spell S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-M in 2011.
thanks for a quick history lesson!
NO we need to use our authority as voters to remove entrenched politicians, replacing them with Statesmen. Giving government, via machination, authority over who can run and who cannot is part of the problem, not part of the solution. Terms Limitations will end up seeing removed qualified and wanted people from office. Remember, Iran's government decides who can run and who cannot. This we must refrain from.
Campaign finance reform? So it is now government's place to decide where people can spend their money? SO much for private property rights, huh?
Ethics enforcement? Now there is a place I will agree. But then that goes back to the first example. Vote the fools OUT!
Yes, we have serious problems, but adding more of them (giving government more authority) is not the solution.
As far as I'm concerned Progressives are disease carrying vermin….
Their only interest in the Constitution is to shred it and use it for nesting material….
Prepare to be assaulted relentlessly from the left, literally.
Two things the radicals cannot abide - those who speak the truth – and runaway slaves.
The radical left will not rest until they destroy you for speaking truth to inscrutable power.
They will go after your friends, your family, your children, your finances and even your very life.
They are cornered. They know it.
They have nothing left but violence and hatred to carry their agenda forward, be strong and never back down.
God bless you and protect you from the evil …..they will undoubtedly try to do to you and yours.
Standard operating procedure for progressives.
People are starting to notice them, and to notice their opposition to America's founding principles … i.e. treason.
So what do they do? They play word games to obscure and draw attention away from what they are doing.
The bit from Wilson is absolutely classic:
To whit, the word "liberty" means whatever we want it to mean. And this gets twisted into implying that the founders meant us to have slavery, because slavery is the new meaning of "liberty" and the founders wanted us to have whatever the word "liberty" means at the moment.
Compare:
Distorting the meaning of words and lying about the logical implications of words are progressives' primary methods of argument.
Nothing is what it is because it all depends on what the meaning of "is" is.
"… or beaten into a sense of reasonableness"
OUR American war of ideals is similar to any other war, in that for true resolution one side must be so
thoroughly defeated they will gladly submit to the majority. For some reason the Elite Ruling Class blue
-hair, blue blood RINO does not grasp this fact of life, therefor they always pull up short of total destruc-
tion of the LEFT, no matter how egregious their crimes. Also the reason we never see major Democrats
do time for their lawbreaking while in public office, however it happens to (R)'s all the time. If no one
from this corrupt to the core executive branch of government does time over their illegal behavior over
the last couple of years I will be outraged, not so much at dems, but at a system that would allow such
leeway for interpreting law (Cass Sunstein, I'm calling your name).
,
What frustrates is the whole Republican "MIA" atmosphere during these Occupy protests…..there is a plethora of opportunities to show Americans that this whole protest joke is part and parcel of the Dhimmicratic party….and with communists, socialists, progressives, et al hijacking this movement, its being embraced by Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, etc.
What more could a political party need? The heads of these groups are practically being handed to the Republicans on a silver platter and they hold it wondering what the hell we're supposed to do with this?
Prayer of Personal Protection is Psalms Ch 91.
Pray our enemies out of here with Psalms Ch 109. (In Jesus Name, in case you are a Christian)
I think that they wisely stayed away from the fray. IMO, this movement was truly a top down orchestration designed to pit Americans against anarchist-Americans. Simply by acknowledging them brings them what they so desire, legitimacy.
While they wallow in their filth and the union cops stand idly by and many mayors do nothing about it, they have exposed who they really are.
The most difficult goal of the Progressive Party (socialist/communist) of the early 1900's was to De-Christianize American thought. Get those ideas of morality out of the school system entirely.
Our public schools today are Socialist. Don't use the word "Progressive" please.
Consider this: ?-What is the difference between our American schools and the Russian schools?
No difference, except that we have more "bells & whistles."
Has our students received a booklet copy of our Founding Documents?
DEMAND IT!
Podesta should be in jail…Marxist thief. Anti-American Infector. Needs the Justice of Consequences for Criminal Activity.
<DIV>Thank you Nelson,</DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV>You can get booklet copies of our Founding Documents at various sites. Such as Freedom Works or the Heritage Foundation….for very little cost, if any.—
READ ! Not about the actual document. Read about the enemy of freedom-the history of communism, the term 'progressive' which means attaining utopia communism a bite at a time. It has ALWAYS failed since the days of Greece! Yet greedy leaders keep trying to get THEIR fair share. Communism is imposed only with great power and punishment but always means the same thing: NO private property. Unfortunately human nature insists on owning property while our government is determined to take it away.
This man another puppet of Soros stands beside Hilary and Obama as major players to impose Sharia everywhere including here, and destroy the Constitution, one word, one law at a time.
Those poor, misguided Progressives.
I swear.
Bless their little ol' hearts.
Excellent post.
The Constitution is as malleable as human nature itself? Is that what they think?
Does anyone not find that line frightening? Aren't there a number of people in the current administration that think exactly that! That we are "malleable"? Remember the "nudge"? (And I'm not talking about Ted Nugent!)
I don't know about you but, that should be a huge neon sign to anyone who thinks progressives have anything to do with "principles"!
What kind of document do you think principled people like Jefferson and Washington et. al. would produce. Do you think they would produce a document that was so amorphous as to be able change at the whims of the current craze? Would a country with such a founding document be able to survive? I think think that it has been proven that this type of document has no chance of survival; I point to the USSR and the myriad others that had their beginnings wrapped in weak documents that could change at the whims of the leaders. Where are they?
Thank you for that wonderful Adams quotation.
We were blessed to be given a Republic. Our only charge is to protect it's liberties.
"Among the natural rights of the colonists are these: First a right to life, secondly to liberty, and thirdly to property; together with the right to defend them in the best manner they can." Sam Adams

"It is of great importance to set a resolution, not to be shaken, never to tell an untruth. There is no vice so mean, so pitiful, so contemptible; and he who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and a third time, till at length it becomes habitual; he tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world's believing him. This falsehood of the tongue leads to that of the heart, and in time depraves all its good disposition."
–Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, 19 August 1785

Isn't it the right that keeps clamouring for amendments for things such as balanced budgets, defining marriage to be between a man and a woman, declaring a fetus a human from the point of conception,…
The deceit of fallen angels!

Yeah, its called Classical LIberalism. Modern conservatards should learn about their roots.
Well, as long as the oil, gas and coal sectors get their subsidies, corporate Executives get their parachutes, and we balance the gov's budget by cutting help for the poor, sick and elderly, I reject socialism!
First I'd recommend you learn what a principle is. Its more than words.
That IS tyrannical.
Maybe to a canadian there is no difference, but passing laws and altering the US Constitution are two different things but you know that already. It is the liberal mind that wants to interpret this treasured document to fit their mood, not conservatives
"For some reason the Elite Ruling Class blue
-hair, blue blood RINO does not grasp this fact of life"
that is because it PAYS to be politically expedient
principles be damned
Thanks.
Indeed. Great quote.
I think they may have rode that horse to death, we're not buying their BS anymore.
.
Actually the framers did contemplate that the Constitution would be updated over time, and provided a means to do that — Article V amendment. However, by the New Deal the progressives abandoned this proper method of changing the Constitution for the far more efficient method of having the Supreme Court effectively amend the Constitution through the subterfuge of judicial interpretation under the "living Constitution" philosophy. We need to re-invigorate the amendment process to reverse these Supreme Court decisions by amendments restating the original constitutional meanings. See http://www.timelyrenewed.com
