Take the Constitution Seriously—Celebrate Constitution Day
by David J. BobbWhen in October 2009 Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked about the constitutionality of the individual health insurance mandate, her response was a question, twice asked, “Are you serious?” Are you serious?” Lest one think hers was a momentary lapse, Pelosi’s press secretary later reiterated the point by saying of the question about the provision’s constitutionality, “That is not a serious question.”

Madam Speaker, the question posed to you was a serious one. It is a question so serious, in fact, that it should be question at the beginning, middle, and end of any legislative debate. It should animate our public conversations, and it should motivate our national legislators to remember the oath they take upon assuming office. That oath, as follows, is itself serious about the Constitution:
“I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
The original oath of office, adopted in 1789, was even more to the point: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm),” a member of Congress used to say, “that I will support the Constitution of the United States.”
In 1838, Abraham Lincoln, not yet 30 years old and still eight years away from his own election to the House of Representatives, said that the Constitution and “reverence for the laws” should “be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap—let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs;— let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice.”
In 2010, the Constitution is more likely to be left out of textbooks entirely, or treated so shabbily that it would be better if it were. The “living Constitution” is preached today, to be sure, but by making the document “living,” educators and legislators alike render it a dead letter. The Constitution, Frederick Douglass said, “is no vague, indefinite, floating unsubstantial, ideal something, colored according to any man’s fancy, now a weasel, now a whale, and now nothing.”
Now nothing. That is close to what the Constitution has become in our national debate. Or at least, until recently, that was the case. A citizen awakening, still growing, has meant that the question, “Is it constitutional?” is now met with greater seriousness—even if not yet by the House Speaker.
Article I, Section 8. Any questions?
This idea, which might seem too simplistic to some today, was of paramount importance to the founders of this country. The enumeration of Congress’s powers in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution defines what Congress can do. Section 9 delineates certain actions that it cannot do, like pass a law that takes effect ex post facto, or grant a title of nobility. Beyond that listing of congressional powers in Article I, Section 8, there was no other recourse for congressional action. No penumbras or emanations, or scholarly discoveries of an “invisible Constitution,” as purported by Laurence Tribe, a Harvard Law School professor and official in the Obama administration, can change the simple fact that the Constitution sets the limits not just for congressional action but for the other two branches of government, as well. Again, Frederick Douglass: “The American Constitution is a written instrument full and complete in itself. No Court in America, no Congress, no President, can add a single word thereto, or take a single word therefrom.”
If the elected representatives of both parties are ever to take the Constitution seriously, citizens must do so first. We can accomplish this through study and reflection.
Constitution Day is Friday, September 17. On this day in 1787, 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. As you reflect on what those delegates accomplished, take 20 minutes to read their handiwork. Consider the text of the Constitution in a book club. Share a copy of the Constitution with a young person. Throw a party to celebrate the Constitution.
Whatever you decide to do, I hope you will also join Hillsdale College for our September 16-17 Constitution Day Colloquium, a program of panels, debates, and special presentations that is available as a free live webcast from Washington, D.C.

Every public servant is bound by this oath. If in violation, removal from office is the only remedy.
What better way to destroy a country than to undermine its Constitution. The progs wish to destroy it to push their marxist ideals. Hurry up 2 Nov.

Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today's world do not have.
Ronald Reagan
"The Constitution was crafted by serious men who were serious about securing a free and prosperous future for the country they loved."
From that day forward, up to today, that same Constitution has been protected by further serious men, who have dedicated their lives to doing so.
"We can never repay their devotion, but we can pay it respect by becoming serious about the Constitution they gave us."
WE, can sleep easy, that they are still out there in the dark, in the shadows, on point. That, in and of itself commands the respect of every citizen in this Nation. To do otherwise, is an affront to those good men, both living and dead, who have given their all for this Nation and its citizenry. It traduces, and besmirches their sacrifice, and their honor.
there should be quite a few removals then

ROTFLMAO,,,How'd yawl like Rush's take off on Margaritaville? We were eating lunch, dropped our
sandwiches and got up and danced… HILARIOUS ! ! !
Now that ruined my entire day. It reminded me of reid, pelosi, boxer, stark, barney frank, feinstein, and the rinos still in congress. Good Grief, how did so many idiots ever get into congress. Whoops, forgot many are from CA. Nuff said.
ALL of them.
Obama, and his entire Cabinet should be led out of the Halls of Power, en masse', in shackles.
Pelosi and the House; Reid and the Senate should likewise go.
At least half of the Supreme Court, and ALL of the Czars.
It is time for a purge.

I always wondered why I was never taught the Constitution in school. I had to go and learn it on my own.
If you take the Constitution seriously, Janet
RenoNapolitano will put you on her terrorist watch list.Who is going to hold these animals to their oath when they control power in the senate, house and white house? Anyone who would be a threat to bring charges of violating ones oath or even treason will be shot down by the majority. Remember we now have a pres who thinks the Constitution is a charter of negative rights. Of course in any normal world a candidate saying such things would have been grilled by the media and never allowed to be candidate let alone elected as Pres. The level of corruption is rotten to this nations core from every level from state, local, federal, media and special interests.
The only way to fix what is wrong is to remove everyone in political power from office with new blood who do not have a long term political career in mind. These people when they speak in the coming weeks to earn your vote should be asked directly whether they will draft/sponsor/support a Term Limit AMENDMENT equal to that of the President. Folks this is a simple yes or no question to be asked there is no "well we will see…" "oh I dunno about that" or whatever excuse can be conjured up. If any prospective candidate will not support such an Amendment then they cannot be trusted because its not about them or their political future. They are going to DC to serve the people not themselves special interests etc.
56 men, our Founding Fathers, had the balls to stand up and do whats right what about you? The time has come to take the gloves off and give corrupt politicians, media and special interest groups a "lethal dose" of their own medicine through http://www.savingtherepublic.com
"pelosi's response was a question, twice asked, “Are you serious?” Are you serious?”
I wonder how she would answer that question if we submitted it to her in a criminal tribunal. I pray that I see that day come soon, before she completely withers away.
That was really funny.
I will be celebrating constitution day, it deserves my support and devotion to defending it.
I also just happens to be my Birthday.
Very well said, and entirely accurate.
I believe the founders would agree with you, and if they agree then so do I.
I missed that.
Care to enlighten us?
Anyone remember Franklin's famous quote, when asked by a woman what they had created?
" A Republic, Ma'am, if you can keep it."
When I took the oath to defend the Constitution and my country from all enemies both foreign and domestic. I did notice that there was no expiration date. I stand with that oath today as I did as a young man when I joined the US Army. It's too bad our government doesn't. Guess I fall into the category of one of napatolino's potential terrorists.
I gladly swear to uphold the constitution! And for all the progressives that want to undermine it's purpose… I have tar and feathers for you after you're voted out of office!

Funny you mention that.
There is, and was, no expiration date on that oath.
The only difference now is, those in office seem to pick and choose out of convenience what is covered by that oath, and they seem to tend to suspend it a lot. The reason?
NO HONOR.
Daeum Ralphie…If he doesn't play it again before the program ends I'll cry.
I was holding my breath to keep from screaming aloud, thus losing a single word.
OMG, that thing is pure gold,,, I'm sure we'll all know it by heart shortly.

Either we have a corporate entity masquerading as a Constitutional government and not bound by the Constitution or we have a government bound to the Constitution that simply ignores the boundaries because We The PEOPLE are allowing it to do so. Whichever way it is, the answer is to remove the corrupt scum operating government today, from top to bottom, and put in place elected offices Statesmen, instead of politicians, who will take the Constitution seriously.
This election isn't about health care, taxes, illegal immigration, crime debt or anything else other than the Constitution itself. The question to be answered is simple.
Either the Constitution matters – or – it doesn't.
You decide.
Congress takes this oath?
No kidding?
Let me state the obvious (at least to us):
".. support and defend the CONSTITUTION … against all enemies, foreign or DOMESTIC…"
NOT the USA but the RULE OF LAW, the law of the land.
Defend it against all who would be cheats and scoundrels whether they be foreigners or neighbors.
How do you defend it? With arms? Maybe. But by keeping it unchanged and faithful to the Founding Father's intent.
It is not a changing-living document, you stinking lefties.
It is the ROCK upon which we built the church of our republic.
God save the Republic.
The oath these people take is a joke to them, * defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic* These people in gvernment have commited Treason by not living up tp there oath…….AZ an borders, for one example

We could have used a good Constitutional debate when Bush was rounding up random Muslims in this country and torturing them.
Be certain to wear a helmet when you go outside!
A college pal of mine lived in Communist Poland for a couple years. She was already a conservative but the experience made her more so.
The American people are the ones losing patience with this man-child. We've given him 19 months and along the way, we've disagreed vehemently with his plans and where he's taking the country. He's insulted us and berated us as though we were the children. He's shoved his socialist massive government and massive debt-ridden spending down our throats.
*Failed fiscal policies, including multiple stimuli, bail-outs, TARPs and takeovers
*High unemployment that continues unabated
*Wealth redistribution and regressive tax polices
*Massive government expansion
*Out-of-control spending
*Shadow government of unvetted czars
*Subverting of our Constitution
*Slavish catering to radical special interest groups
*Disastrous foreign policy weakening America's worldwide position and status
*Undermining core values of American culture
*Destabilizing of our military
*Liberalizing of our courts
*Ineffective immigration policy
*Condescending Leftist elitism

One day, when you leave mom's basement you will start the process of 'growing into manhood'….
This will be when you discover your government has lied to you…the world does not owe you a living…
According to the Constitution this entire Congress and the President should be brought up on charges of treason.
Here's the problem with the OATH OF OFFICE and lunatic-left -dcrat socialists: the Oath states "So help me God."
Since NONE of the d-crat socialists believe in God, the OATH becomes irrelevant to them. (Perhaps, for these lunatic reprobates, the Oath should state "So help me ALLAH." or "So help me SEIU." or "So help me BIG GOVERNMENT.")

Our Constitution is slowly being dismantled by federal court judges with an agenda.
Why? Because the first clue of a serious problem are when law school professors lecture their students to NOT follow the Constitution, but instead to READ SCOTUS established case law rulings.
Oh yea, you know me so well. I totally live in my mother's basement. Oh the big bad government, so scary. Lying to me all the time, how dare they?
You're right, the world does not owe me a living. My trust fund does.
I too took that oath and re-affirmed it each time I re-enlisted. Notice that I said re-affirmed. The only way for that oath to not be in effect is for someone to renounce it, to which I believe constitutes treason. Sometimes I think that only those that have fought or at least have placed their life on the line to protect and uphold the Constitution understand the true meaning of our freedom and liberty as spelled out in that wonderful document. No offense to those that didn't serve. It's not for everyone, but it doesn't mean someone can't believe and support the Constitution that's spelled out in the oath of loyalty we in the military all swore to.
The Constitution is one of the most important weapons in the arsenal of the patriot. It gives us direction and justification for our push to correct the direction our society is on. The leftists and progressive/communists want to keep the people ignorant of their rights, in hopes that no one will question what they are forcing on us.
Before my son and daughter leave High School, they will have read the Federalist Papers. That is my promise.
Thank you, for your patriotism. God Bless America…
They probably have a tin foil hat instead.
We have extremely lazy trolls. They can't even get creative with their lying. Lying—an inherently creative act! It's all rote these days.
And you find this funny exactly why? Please be specific.
Pastor Jones has more respect for the koran than congress and the administration have for the Constitution.
Time to ditch the Patriot Act. I'm sure a lot of conservatives and liberals would agree on this even if not for the exact same reasons.
I believe the singer was supposed to be President Bush?
another gem from the EIB!
Logging in here already puts you on "the list."
Come on folks…Asking a progressive to uphold an oath is like asking a muslim NOT to practice Taqiyya !!!
Or when FDR interned all those Japanese.
Or Obama agreed with indefinite detention.
Technically, I think this is one of the meanings of the term "High Crime and misdemeanors." To my way of thinking the lack of fidelity to the Constitution is a High Crime. It is a violation of a sacred oath. Bill Clinton should have been convicted and removed from office; he lied under oath, knowingly, to protect his scrawny ass. The current President lies everyday. As does the Speaker of the House and Senate Majority Leader. Is there no honor?
Pelosi is a poster child for the REPTILLIANS theory
Please, at least a little accuracy. His ass was not scrawny.
That is because the Federal Department of Education doesn't want us to know it. It was created by President Carter. I think we should abolish it and save $1 trillion. BTW, President Jefferson tried 3 times to abolish slavery, and he wrote against slavery in the Declaration of Independence. It was removed. Also, when his wife died he never remarried or dated anyone. He remained faithful to her until his death July 4, 1826. It was Jefferson's nephew Peter Carr who had the affair with Sally Hemings. Too bad the left says the opposite.
Term limits do not work. Read the constitution: Article 1 Section 2 The number of representatives shall not exceed one for every Thirty thousand. Increase the House of Reps smaller congressional districts means smaller government. Every politcal district is gerrymandered which makes it darn near impossible to vote out an incumbent. Keep the districts small within county, and city lines and that is how congress will return to the center right. You have to get involved at the local level. Join a local county group. If you want to abolish the 17th amendment you have to increase representation in the state legislature. Do you know why congress, and state representatives say its a bad idea? Because it takes away their power over you! Term limits do nothing except create a revolving door for the next crook.
Nope… His Oneness. There is also a line … Take your last shaker of salt.
Probably the best song since Kennedayooooh
It's like taking an open book test in high school or college. The answers to all of today's questions are there. We just have to look. Fortunately, more and more people are looking to the Constitution for answers. It's the only way to keep America going.
Correct but we cannot get there until we have the ability to restrict those coming to power. Once they, politicians, see 'career politics' is over it will open the door to the next step which you have described.
Step one: remove all incumbents with "New Blood".. eliminate career politicians
Step two: create Term Limit Amendment equal to the Presidency max 8 yrs in service
Step three: enforce Article Section 2, eliminating gerrymandering (this is why guys like Frank, Stark, Rangel, Schumer, Boxer etc have been around so long) as Liquid explained
Now we know you are a Kennedy. How are the driving/diving lessons going?
Isn't that a brand of gin?
Moments of Ungenious: 9/11/2001: Taking out World Trade Towers instead of Capitol Building and WH. Taking out Taliban instead of Medina.
I gave it a listen – It's supposed to be Bush 43, making reference to Obama's blaming him for all the problems:
"he continues to claim that he's got George Bush to blame, yeah I know, the surge was my fault."
"…now that I think about it, low taxes were my fault"
And concluding with:
"…2012's gonna show it's his own damn fault"

I'm sure the local McDonalds is trying to snap up the "excellent" graduates of Hillsdale and Albion as quickly as possible. Those are the "colleges" for the failures who couldn't get into Michigan or Michigan State.
Great. At least you realize that you are accountable to the law and I am not.
Everyone should have a personal copy of the Constitution. Paper copies are cheap and handy and there are several free apps for iPhone/iPad/iPod on the iTunes store. A handy alternative is an app called "Manual of the United States of America" which has the declaration, constitution, president lists, the complete Federalist Papers, Anti-Federalist Papers and much more (it cost $2, but well worth it.)
You still haven't provided any specifics. How many Hillsdale and Albion grads are working at McDonald's? And how does that compare to U of M and MSU grads working at McDonald's? Please be specific.
Next Thursday, the day before Constitution Day, there will be a Tea Party gathering at the Utah State Capitol specifically about the constitution. I've been asked to sing the 4th Verse of the National Anthem. I'm hoping people listen to the words and take them to heart because our cause of restoring the Constitution to the center of American politics is just and necessary.
Destroy its currency first! Is in a tied position for that honor.
Me too 63! OMG
With or without tin foil?
Since we are discussing the Constitution and the failure of Congress to obey it, I recommend this site which chronicles the kickoff meeting of "The Nullify Now Tour" from Dallas Texas. The first speaker is Thomas Woods Jr. Ph.D I think everyone here will find it very informative on history. Specifically these: "The Principles of 98", Madison Report 1798, Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions 1798. Here is the link: http://f4fs.org/thomas-e-woods-at-nullify-now/. Personally I think this is the best way to get our country back. We as states already retain the authority, we have just had a growing case of amnesia since about 1867.
You still buzzing around Obama Boi? After looking at your 'body of work' here you have no foundation whatsoever to be critiquing any institution of higher learning.
In fact, if brains were tampons, you would clearly be unable to stop a bleeding amoeba….
"When in October 2009 Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked about the constitutionality of the individual health insurance mandate, her response was a question, twice asked, “Are you serious?” Are you serious?”"
Yes, Madam Speaker, we are serious – very serious as you will find out November 2.

to see if there are any readings in your area on September 18. If not, you can start your own. Invite your friends, have a potluck, barbecue, whatever. Invite neighbors, friends, and have a reading of the constitution. Many people haven't thought about or read the document in many years. Our congress people, some have never read it at all so how do they know whether they are upholding it or not. Remember the guy that said, "…………oh, it's several places in the constitution, like the good and welfare clause…………"
Puh-leeze. The good and welfare clause? Really?
And of course, in those days, welfare meant the good of all the people, not I need the government to give me money and housing and health care…………….
