This Is Your Country on Progressivism
by David J. BobbPicture an incandescent light bulb. This is your country.

Now imagine a compact fluorescent light bulb. This is your country on Progressivism.
What does a country on Progressivism look like? To start with, in the evening hours it’s pretty dim. Have you tried reading at night in a hotel room recently?
With more than 300 million of those little curly-Q fluorescent light bulbs now sold annually, our country is looking a lot less bright. Ever since Congress a few years ago declared that by 2012 Americans needed to be more energy efficient, it’s been out with Edison, in with the EPA. And turn on some more lights—I can’t see a thing!

When the CFL’s (even light bulbs get an acronym in our age) first hit the market, proponents of the new bulb responded to frequent complaints by insisting that their product would get better. Since that hasn’t happened, maybe the old model could be improved, some thought. Tweak Thomas Edison’s invention and bring it up to current standards.
As the New York Times reported this past summer about new efforts to update the Edison bulb, “Indeed, the incandescent bulb is turning into a case study of the way government mandates can spur innovation.”
In that single sentence we can see a whole volume about what Progressives believe.
Progressives, imbued with an undying confidence in the vitality of the federal government, see it as a goad to “goodness.” Government can mandate its way to “innovation.” And that “innovation” can, over time, make us good.
We should learn to love the new light bulbs, its proponents say, because it will help us all save the planet. The act of adopting something as small as a new light bulb molds us into better planet-loving people. Pro-actively energy-efficient in all that we do, we can become better citizens.
The Progressive view of the Constitution, strangely enough, mimics Progressive advocacy of the new light bulb. Update the old thing, Progressives say of our Constitution, and make it fit our times. It’s too ancient—too inefficient—for our age. A little mandate from the President, Supreme Court, or Justice Department, surely will spur constitutional innovation. This change will create a “new” Constitution, and a better country.
What is this “new” Constitution? It’s a living document—vital, dynamic, active—that allows for the greatest “innovation.” Such innovation is possible because the new Constitution grants each branch of government maximum leeway to advance the administrative state—the behemoth that brought you inferior light bulbs screwed into their sockets by Uncle Sam.
The old boundaries—separation of powers, federalism, checks and balances, and a jurisprudence of original meaning—can be swept away with the confidence of a new enlightenment that says, “Government is here to help, and the Constitution must not stand in its way.”
We should learn to love this “new” Constitution, its Progressive proponents say, because it will help us all become better people and better citizens. We will finally have the security that should have been promised by the Founders.
It’s been widely reported that when one of the new CFL’s breaks, the clean-up is a little messy. Kids have to be cleared out of the room for fear of neurotoxic poisoning, and adults are left with 12 steps, according to a handy EPA guide, for cleaning up the mercury. All you need, the EPA tells you on its Web site, are the following items: “4-5 ziplock-type bags; trash bags (2 to 6 mils thick); rubber, nitrile or latex gloves; paper towels; cardboard or squeegee; an eyedropper; duct tape, or shaving cream and small paint brush; a flashlight; and powdered sulfur (optional).” Must be simple, huh?
It’s kind of difficult to clear the kids out of the country when there’s a constitutional crisis. And while a Constitution can’t exactly be broken, it can be rendered irrelevant. Thankfully, ours is a resilient document. Its strength lies not in the parchment but rather in the immaterial principles of justice, the rule of law, and liberty and equality to all. We will find lasting greatness only in an appeal to those principles, and not in reliance upon government-mandated “innovation.”
This is your country, after all, and not that of the Progressives.

I sure love the light bulb analogy!
I have built a special storeroom, just to store my regular old fashioned lightbulbs. Enough to last me, and all my heirs the rest of our lives. I'm not interested in the Progressives dictating to me what ligh.tbulbs I can burn. Those dimwit sumbitches can go sit in the dark, and philosophize about once upon a time, way back in the day, when America WAS great.
Before progressivism killed Her.
I have to admit, I had no idea the eco-freaks had already mandated an elimination of safe, bright, carbon spewing bulbs. The first thought that went through my mind when I saw this: Time to stock up…
How many people does it take to screw in a CFL bulb.
(one, plus a majority of congress)
In about a year and a half you will no longer be able to buy old fashioned incandescent light bulbs. I just can't wait until Obama legislates Gillette and outlaws regular razor blades, for fear we will all slit our wrists in our depressed state. I can't wait until he creates a new safety razor. I'm sure it will create many jobs……….
The hell with those migraine headache inducing curly bulbs………..go out and buy all of the regular light bulbs and stockpile them !
Obama wants to drag us all into another DARK AGE; beat him back come November !
I replaced the lightbulbs in my house with the new lightbulbs last year. They work well, and I have seen my electric bills go down substantially. Government mandate or not, these things are the wave of the future.
Progressives will consider the analogy a compliment. Progressive comes from the word "progress" and these lightbulbs are progress.
Thomas Edison must have been racist
By the time they are done, we will all be living in caves, singing Kum-bay-a, holding hands with the Taliban.
On another topic, I am starting to believe that Glen Beck has gone plumb crazy. He has gone from being sincere, to a poor actor at best, pandering for ratings. He can't much crazier.
Muy loco!
I agree! Either buy them up as fast as possible or wait until LED lighting becomes cheaper. I've replaced all the primary lighting in my house with LED lamps and not only are they as bright as our old friend the incandescent, they last, on average, of 50k to 100k in hours which means that I'll either be dead or in another house by the time they need replacing.
The only real downside to them is their initial cost.
No, not singing with the Taliban, PRAYING< IN ARABIC with them, or dead.
Erm… but fluorescent bulbs with a proper color temperature (~5000 K) beat out incandescent bulbs any day. Though the cheaper fluorescent bulbs (~3000 K) I think are much worse. Not only that, I can actually see the cheapies flicker. (I'm one of those people with weird eyes. I used to be able to see the flickering on old CRT monitors too. The poor ones looked like strobe lights to me.)
That said, mandating that everyone use a fluorescent I think is un-American. There are still plenty of situations where an incandescent might be preferable. It's a little thing called "personal choice". I used to think that's what America was about.
They don't work well, trigger migraine headaches, and don't give off enough light to read by. THose bulbs are also a bio hazard and poisonous, when broken.
PROGRESSIVES are just sytinking Commies under another name and should be purged.
Actually, Edison really was a racist and an anti-Semite; but he got the light bulb right.
That was before mandatory seatbelt use, no-smoking in public places and Federal Healthcare………
I got a bunch and tried them out. I found the light level was slightly less than an incandescent, but the qquality of the light was better. if you use a couple of them, you're back to where you started anyways.
However, they do not last as long as the package stated…probably because they are made in China.
Besides, I love the sound those new CFL bulbs make when you break them.
There's been a run on single-edge razor blade lately. A.lot of folks scraping off their Obama bumper stickers. Nobody with any brains wants to be identified with this pathetic creature.
Like some people get medical marijuana, I'm gonna get a script for incandescent bulbs. Seems fair to me. Then I'll get my insurance company to pay my electric bill & cost of bulbs.
Care to elaborate on that? I don't watch TV so I only get snippets of him from the net occasionally.
HA!! Have you ever smelled one when it burned out!? It'll burn you nose hairs and you'll taste a poisonous gas…oh, and the smell lingers for a few days! WHEN it happens to you get as close as you can to the bulb and breathe deeply until you pass out, see how fast you run to the store and buy regular bulbs!

Only a complete nitwit would compare old (light bulbs) with the new (ones) and say that the old stuff is better.
That is too damn funny Cowboy, though I know there is some measure of 'truth' in there ~
I love those Obama bumper stickers. I usually slap a "Coal Now" or "NRA" sticker over them……..
Hey, don't blame the CFL. Technology is great, and I'm happy to have the freedom to use those things where I see fit. It's the dim bulbs in DC that are the problem.
yea the wife and I have been seeing the same thing…not sure what the heck is going on but he needs to just present the facts in a more serious fashion rather than being on a comic tour…it detracts greatly from the message which he nails most of the time…
Also, your name is basically DJ Bob
Progress would be you screwing one of these into your anal orifice and sitting down.
Well, the fat little goober is making about 25 million bucks, with the TV show, the radio show, the books and all the merchandise. I wonder if he has been conflicted?
I'm all about light quality so I've been using fluorescents before they were "green". I don't give a rip about the energy use however and… it is true that they are technically more of a hazard than an incandescent.
LED's are kind of fun too if you get the right color temperature. Though, you needs TONS of them to get any decent amount of light. I had a bunch installed over my bed for reading…. it wasn't enough light so I had to double the amount of LED's.
How expensive are the LED lights ?
I have a stockpile of the Edison type ones and keep buying more and more. I may never run out of them. LOL
No, he's always been hyped up – he is just reacting to BO's stellar speech today. He can get as crazy as he wants, I do pretty much the same thing here in the privacy of my own home
Listening to all the mixed messages coming out of the snake's mouth makes the best of us alittle crazy – remember the SOTU?? We were all on fire here, reacting to the arrogant lying. Just my take on it ~
You've got that right!
So if dimmer light bulbs that make you sick is "progress", what's the ultimate goal? Everyone lying dead in the dark?
Beck is a born again Libertarian…
Once a neocon, he has seen the light and is now messianic on the topic of Progressivism, and is conrcting the dots between Marx, Hitler, Stalin, Mao- and the Progressive movement. His research team is first rate,
and you can get an excellent history lesson.
With a great deal of theatrics and histrionics as well…
Stop calling them "progressive." That implies PROGRESS – far from their actual goal, which is to take us backwards about 200 years in quality of life for humans. Better they should take us back 200 years POLITICALLY to the age of responsibility.
And better to call them what they really are – Left-Wing Fascists, like Stalin and Hitler – with secret agendas behind every new speech or initiative.
Too much theatrics.
He is starting to look like a "tool". For someone. I just haven't figured out who, yet.
Good lord you are a dimwit. Pardon the pun.
I put a little 'Hammer & Sycle (sp?)' over the 'O'. If I could afford it, I'd stuff a Sock Monkey into the tailpipe.
The tubes give me a headache after a while, but I haven't had the same problem with the compact bulbs.
I too like the LED's and have some in the kitchen for accent lighting.
OK, I just watched a current one. I think I see what you mean. And… he doesn't do the thug accent very well.
NO, OCG, he's crazy and he also spews hyperbole and lies.
Teddy Roosevelt wasn't a "PROGRESSIVE" as he claims, nor are both President Bushes.
Though I'm delighted that he exposes his audience to many different things, that he has just found out about, many people have known these facts for many, many decades; yet he acts as though nobody knows this stuff but him !
Today, he was absolutely NUTS ! I was shocked by his antics, which he really didn't need to do.
ROFL
"complete nitwit"
That's all you've got!? Wow, not even a 1/10 on my ad hominem scale. Try again!
Only a mordant idiot could write as you do, twinsey.
That is one issue with fluorescents. If you get a bad one it looks like a strobe light to me. Or then there are the bad ones that buzz! Those never do.
"Government mandate or not, these things are the wave of the future"
These bulbs are a dead end. LED technology will consign them to the ash heap of history. Speaking of government mandates how is the DDT ban working out Mr. Joe Progressive. Last time I checked the death toll had reached 60 million worldwide and it is being predicted that Malaria is going to make a comeback in the U.S.
How about stuffing your mandates where the sun don't shine.
His show on HNN was actually much better.
And an entire union – SEIU……….
Thank you.
I thought it was just me, taking it wrong. I'm glad you saw the same thing. Maybe he is tired, and needs a vacation at the "special place for tired people"…………
See your point, but if it makes for good TV, draws in the viewers and some folks get accidentally educated – I'll take it.
It's Pregressivism. Don't give the Margaret Sanger abortion/eugenists a bad name.
Actually they are prevert pregressives. They are AC/DC. And they are also National Socialists. Just ask Rahm Auerbach and his doctor brother about that.
Remember George Bernard's pleasant gas which would be used to eliminate the unwanted. He was one of the original progressives, but the modern-day pregressives have forgotten the formula.
Well the barking was over the top, but I got why he felt compelled to do it! My interest with his show isn't about the historical portion as much as what is happening daily – kind of the under the radar stuff I like to hear about. I am not sure why he goes off on some of the labels he does regarding Teddy and the Bushes ~ I guess I tune that part out while waiting for him to make his point…
Truth is 1Red, alot of his audience probably doesn't know this stuff, so though it may be tedious for those who have long since learned this, for those who haven't heard it/been taught this, it's a good thing!
actually, i'd rather go for LEDs – far more efficient.
Actually, here in earthquake zone, it' s not bad advice – different reason, same result.
Funny, i just had this conversation with my 13 year old son the other day about the unintended consequences of interference by the federal government. Basically we talked about how expensive these cfl's are and how the government has essentially artificially eliminated an important source of competition in the free market. So don't look for the price of these babies to come down anytime soon (led's not quite ready for prime time yet). The only thing to do is use it as an example of why we need to get back to the principle of small government as outlined in our constitution.
How about Regressive?
You're welcome, CL.
Nope, it's not just you, at all !
He's gotten crazier and crazier and crazier and far too pompous for my liking. And he also doesn't really understand how our government works, many of the terms he uses, nor who actually did what.
He's as loony as Imus is and wants to be a "king maker", which is a very dangerous combination !
I've been stocking up also. Do'nt buy the GE ones, they are made in China or Mexico,
There are ones that are made in the USA, I check the label before I buy. They are usually 1/2 the price of the GE ones also, and I also know I'm not helping out Immelt.
The CFL's contain mercury, Soon we will have to pay for the clean-up of all the land-fills across America.. This adds some light to the " Shovel Ready" jobs Obama and the proglibs have been promising us !!!
I've been buying case's of the edison bulbs for a while myself, there pretty cheap at Home Depot..
Oh BTW did you know with the CFL's if you break one on your carpet you are supposed to cut the carpet out were in broke, got to love the proglibs GREAT idea's !!!
I think you must be suffering from the Mercury gases given off by those curly fries light bulbs.
well, as O'Reilly said, it's working for him…
No. 2 Personality behind Oprah? 18 months ago nobody ever heard of the guy- and don't forget he is a former radio 'shock jock'.
He'll make in excess of twenty million this year. Crocodile tears and all…
The CFLs are lousy. Mine flicker and give me a headache. To show you how bad they are, I have a light powered calculator in my office that does NOT work under the CFL lights. In the daytime there is enough sun light from the window to make it work, but come dusk I am out of luck.
In still enjoy looney ol' Imus.
He is tempered now, since he is on FOX.
His whacked out wife is as crazy as an outhouse rat.
I think too much power, and too much money, drives people insane.
I was reading some history book or another a few years back and was surprised to see a quote from TR stating that he was a progressive.
Hey folks.
How is this for a small business model?
I have been looking around for a small incandescent lightbulb factory in the USA, to prepare for when these bulbs are outlawed. I would like to continue making them.
Would there be any interested buyers out there?
I am serious.
They give me crippling migraines. Why do you think it's OK to force your beliefs and preferences on my body?
Not everyone…just everyone except rich, educated, smug white "progressives."
Teddy Roosevelt started the Progressive Party…
I am currently reading American Progressivism which focuses largely on Roosevelt and Wilson, their writings/speeches. Pretty eye-opening so far.
I could suggest some books on Teddy Roosevelt, but to save you some time, just Wiki him – second sentence "… leadership of the Progressive Movement …" Then read the rest. Teddy was what we now call a RINO.
Just because your party is Republican doesn't mean your not a progressive – think about a lot of Dubya's domestic policies.
You should see my boxes of bulbs, I'll be set for a while.
The expense of them is just part of the appeal for progressives–it'll become a new "entitlement" (like the TV converter boxes). If you're on any sort of state or federal welfare program or over 65 (no means testing), taxpayer-funded lightbulbs!
Fluorescent light bulbs may work warmer climates, but they are not practical in the cold.(i.e.- MN) If they are used outdoors, they burn much more energy by trying to warm up and never do light up fully, a huge waste of energy. I do use CFL bulbs in specific locations indoors, but to think that our Gov't actually mandates CFL is inane and ill-informed of the facts of physics. I can't believe the left is promoting CFL's since the hazard of breaking one near a child (or adult) can be so dangerous! That proves that it has nothing to do with the environment….follow the money.
I use them in situations where I leave the light on a lot. If you turn them on and off a lot their lifespan is seriously reduced. I also use the equivalent of a 100 watt incandescent (23 watts) and get about a s much light as a 60.
And, if it's really cold, they won't start outdoors.
Not sure if there's any savings when I include my trips to the Hazardous Waste site to properly dispose of the dead ones.
True, the new bulbs may use less electricity, but what about the increased energy required to manufacture these bulbs, not to mention the toxins. Suddenly it's OK to mass distribute one the most toxic substances on earth to every house in the country. It's just like with buying a new fuel efficient car. Sure it gets better millage than the old family truckster, but the energy and raw materials required to build it, far out weigh any savings in fuel use. A car can last almost forever if properly maintained and you could build millions less cars. Less factories, materials, energy, toxins, waste products. New cars use a lot of plastic. Where do you think plastic comes from?
There are better ways to save energy. I read recently that some city has a $170 million electric bill just for traffic lights.
How much energy is wasted on lighting giant parking lots when stores and companies are closed at night? What about the millions of massive street lamps all over the country used to light highways? Isn't that why our cars have head lights?
Just look at a night time satellite image. All those lights are not coming from houses.
A person could make a killing on EBAY and Craigslist punting off contraband light bulbs (if they were to become outlawed) I got some room left in the storage unit next to the 30# cans of R-12 freon… Hmmmm…
Progressivism comes from the words, Marxism, Communism, fascism, socialism, Dictatorships, Stasi, gulag, long lines…
The EPA has ruled that exhaling ( CO2) is hazardous to the environment, but filling your house with mercury vapors is OK. I don't know for sure, but I'm going to guess these new bulbs are made in China. They're safety record with toxic substances is not exactly what you would call stellar.
Thats funny.
I had to buile an extra room for mine.
My storage shed was full of barrels of DDT and Agent Orange, and other "neccissities"……..
This is also our country also being signed away by Executive Orders:
Excessive to say the least and also to push his Progressive agenda:

Cowboy, you are a long time well respected poster here and I generally agree with what you post.
Glen Beck takes an awful lot of shite from the 'vest left wing conspiracy', guess I'm just a little surprised hearing that from you. I will only say, like him or not, he does tell the truth, I have not found him to wrong yet, nor anyone over meida matters, huffpo, daily kos…take your pick no one found him wrong yet…
With all due respect, I respect your opinion. I don't know how well respected I am here, that is neither here, nor there, but thanks anyhow.
I might not have been clear enough on Beck. I really like him, alot. I used to listen to him on the radio and still do. I believe in him, and believe he is sincere. Sometimes I might say things tounge in cheek, or in a flippant manner, and it comes out wrong.
Really, what I honestly think, is that he believes in America, and I like that. He should not cheapen himself by trying to do some stupid "scttick".
I hope that clears it up.
Progressive fools, they should be forced to drink the mecury out of those "Green" bulbs
I installed a curly-Q flourescent light as m y front-door headlight, against my will. I say against my will, because it was inside the packaging as the fixture with no external advertising. I was surprised to discover the curly-Q thing on the day of installation. I noticed during Snowmegeddeon that the damn thing would refuse to turn on under a certain temperature (still not measured [by me] – since precision measurement of trivia just is not my deal). This after I previously noticed it would refuse to turn on during daylight hours – which at the time seemed like a "cool feature." I now deem it useless when I really need it. The very definition of unintended consequences.

Brilliant as usual, not
Amazing how those new fangled light bulbs are cork screw shaped. I bet the next version (from the czars like Kevin Jennings) will include a packet of lotion.
I found out that these aren't that difficult to dispose either. They fit in my trash bin just fine.
I thought these bulbs were just an option for Idiots and of course politicians. Only an Idiot would want hazardous materials in there lighting fixtures at home or work. Washington is a example of a live breathing contradiction.
Sure it's better. It has mercury.
CL-
Honestly, I think Beck may be borderline burned out… the guy works like a maniac. I think he has been thrust into a spotlight that he never thought he'd see. I like him too, but he lapses into hokey stuff that is not very impressive.
It could be all those road shows with O'Reilly are taking some toll and I sense in his eyes that he still does not believe he deserves what he has accomplished… because of his humble upbringing.
I pray the guy gets his act back on track. Guys like him offer us a perspective not available through any alternative source.
Yes Robert. That's the Dims method to control healthcare costs and save the environment.
Heard the old saying; Light's on, nobody home?
Mythbusters did a segment a while back about the CFL vs. a normal plain-jane incandecent bulb, and the difference was negligible. The CFL thing is all bullshit wrapped in a pretty package.
Great piece David! The analogy between the bulbs is right on. The other day my nephew was able to help me clean up a broken incandescent bulb- he's 6 years old. The only hazard was the sharp pieces of broken bulb- glass. Had that bulb been a "more progressive" fluorescent "twisty" bulb, we would have had to take the kids and dog outside in the cold (we live in Maryland), I would have had to put on a gas mask, gloves, and then if I didn't have to call the HAZMAT crew in, we could all get back to what we were doing…I think I will go with Edison…:-)
Yep…..I also refuse to buy them, and will stick with the good old fashioned ones. Works just fine for me! Do I conserve energy? Yes, I do what my grandmother and mom taught me – turn off the lights when you leave a room! Gosh, what a concept!
Think of all that mercury from the CFL's seeping into our water supply when the vast majority of these things wind up in landfills from sea to shining sea. Just like the millions of African children needlessly killed by malaria due to the Green Police banning DDT, the envro-zealots will just shrug it off when their CFL's poison the nations water supply.
No, Teddy started the BULL MOOSE PARTY .
Woodrow Wilson was a ONE WORLDER.
The new CFL's have mercury in them…better hope they are being disposed of correctly. And if they are made in China, they are probably putting other toxics in them–just because they can…
Okay, here's where people get into trouble…………………. the word "PROGRESSIVE" has been used abnd abused by different people, for 100 years or more, to mean different things.
It's just like the word "enlightened" .
My first (and only) CFL lasted about 10 hours. I'm stocking up on those Edison bulbs.
