Review: ‘Death by China-Confronting the Dragon’
by Chriss W. StreetThere has been nothing more cowardly in my lifetime than the American government’s dysfunctional response to the economic imperialism of China. The Chinese have shown a unique political sophistication in co-opting the elites of big corporate America with crony business deals; and politically pacifying Congress with a willingness to fund their deficit spending. But with the common man’s concern rising, two accomplished academics, Peter Navarro and Greg Autry have just published: “Death By China”; a muckraker’s call to confront the dangers of America’s dance with the Chinese Dragon in the 21st Century.
The first chapter of the book is a grim expose on the dangers of Chinese food exports. The reader is taken for a stroll down the modern isles of America’s super markets; where Chinese imports increasingly dominated display shelves. Perhaps some nice seafood grown in the raging chemical stew of the Yangtze’s river would be an attractive offering for your family tonight. Don’t worry about the fish and shrimp dying from the world’s most bacteria infested waters; the Chinese simply pour massive amounts of banned antibiotics in the water to prevent that nasty dis-colorization of diseases. The same quality control mentality often holds for China’s market share dominance in such staples as white meat chicken, apple juice, garlic, canned pears, honey and a myriad of other basic foods.
Feeling a little woozy after considering how much mercury and other poisons you have already accumulated in your body from eating these imported treats: you learn that Chinese communist drug makers now produce 70% of the world’s penicillin, 50% of its aspirin, and 33% of its Tylenol you may have ingested. The Dragon’s drug makers have also captured much of the world market in antibiotics, enzymes, primary amino acids, and vitamins. China has even cornered the world market for vitamin C—with 90% of market share. Oh by the way; China now plays a dominant role in the production of vitamins A, B12, and E, besides many of the raw ingredients that go into multivitamins.
As the authors report: “These statistics should disturb all of us for one simple reason: Far too much of what China is flooding our grocery stores and drug emporia with is pure poison. That’s why Chinese foods and drugs always rank #1 of those flagged down at the border or recalled by both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority.”
Having captured the reader with sufficient “yuk factor”; the book moves on to illuminate the Dragon’s art of using “Weapons of Job Destruction” to eviscerate manufacturing employment here in the United States. Unlike most talented economists who love to anaesthetize the reader with complicated formulas based on obscure logic and theories; Professors,, Navarro and Autry, specifically illuminate how the Chinese bureaucracy systematically targets industries supporting middle class wages in America for conquest and transfer to China. The growth of these targeted industries is sponsored by government intervention through access to cheap wages, unlimited low cost loans, an undervalued currency, and an absolute lack of any environmental consideration. If these concessions are still not compelling enough for transfer to China, the Dragon can provide an endless stream of prison labor at subsistence cost to close the deal.
The book details how the Chinese Communists Party seeks to achieve economic imperialism through its “eight pillars”: 1. An elaborate web of illegal export subsidies; 2. A cleverly manipulated and grossly undervalued currency; 3. The blatant counterfeiting, piracy, and outright theft of America’s intellectual property treasures; 4. Engaging in massive environmental damage; 5. Ultra-lax worker health and safety standards; 6. Unlawful import tariffs and quotas; 7. Predatory pricing and practices to push foreign rivals out of key resource markets and then gouge consumers with monopoly pricing; and 8. “Great Walls of Protectionism”—to keep all foreign competitors from setting up shop in China.
Having defined that most of the challenges America faces in competing in the “Dragon’s Century” are self-inflicted; Navarro and Autry outline a clear and achievable path for America to tame the Dragon’s onslaught. This highly entertaining book serves as not only a riotous call to arms; but a roadmap for American’s to re-claim the 21st Century as their own.

China's New Concept Aircraft Carrier:

Ouch.
My biggest concern is our pharma and chemical companies going to China. The Chinese have ZERO respect for the property of others. The amount of counterfeit Viagra alone is staggering.
Just eat Local Grown foods…food problem solved…..As far as the rest? China has less then a decade before collapse. It will cause the next downturn….
I the government would stop funding the government by borrowing from the rich and stated Taxing the rich like they did before these days. This would make it so that we would not be dependent on foreign countries lending money to our government.
We are not American's. We are Americans.
Slop and more slop, and still no one proofreads the articles.
Thanks for the info. I intend to check out that road out of China the authors offer.
With a little bit more awareness and the ability to choose to afford the more expensive US made products, we have the power to put Chinese made products out of business.
Read the label……
China will have the finest military our money can buy. Our kids will be so proud.
Anyone feel like borrowing more from China today?
This trend will only continue as long as the EPA, FDA, IRS, OSHA and a lot of other agencies continue to make it impossible to produce products stateside. 156 weeks I have spent in China. Let me tell you, it is the armpit of the earth.
Have any of you seen a story like this on China? Here is a video that illustrates what China did when the world crumbled in 2007/2008. All I read, or saw was that China just had a robust economy due to how much exports they have done, but there is more. The Chinese government spent billions on building rail, stores and cities with no one to inhabit them. They talk how this type of centralized spending is just short term and that it will eventually come crashing down. This policy of centralized government spending is exactly what obama professes.
Two observations from this….. first, this type of policy is unsustainable, so WHEN will it come crashing down for the Chinese? Second, will the obama administration see the inefficiency in this type of policy….. NOT! Simply amazing with so much evidence before us, they will never get it.

Here's another, but loner story on the same subject..

China is a house of cards and we can stop it if we choose……
Always look for the "Texas" label to keep my money here. Unfortunately, Senetor Kery's ketchup is made in Asia (Vietnam?).
With Obama and the dems pushing all jobs offshore, soon we wont be able to do nothing in the USA. Of course, those beholden to big business and help the transfer of jobs outside the US are just as guilty. Lastly, H1 visas need to be done away with, period.
Exactly. I never could understand why we do business with, and build China's military, as is the case.
A quick business halt would collapse their whole scheme.
Think of it as a bonus… Adds more fun to the sometimes tedious and boring content… Just where is that sun-shiny and optimistic outlook you used to have in such abundance?
"China has less
thenthan a decade before collapse. It will cause the next downturn…. "You are right in the first instance – I have been saying that for over a year, maybe longer. You may be right in the second instance, but that will depend on the path chosen and pursued here in America between 2012 and 2020… They may be the world's second largest economy, but it is a house of cards largely populated by uneducated paupers…

He he! I avoid ALL of that poisonous crap! ALL of the meat I eat is "local" (within 300mi), I avoid anything from the ocean (except Alaskan King crab) and I drink enough beer so as not to need ANY drugs. Could I have the perfect lifestyle?
China is doomed. If we get our own house in order they once again become irrelevant… Stop buying the hype…
Does anyone still remember the 1990's and Clinton with his Chinese policies:
President Clinton hosted over 100 campaign fundraisers in the White House, many with Chinese connections.
2. President Clinton used John Huang, Charlie Trie, Johnny Chung, James Riady, and others with strong Chinese ties to raise campaign money.
3. President Clinton signed waivers to allow his top campaign fundraiser's aerospace company to transfer U.S. missile guidance technology to China.
4. President Clinton covered up the theft of our most valuable nuclear weapons technology.
5. President Clinton lied to the American people over 130 times about our nation's security while he knew Chinese missiles were aimed at American children.
6. President Clinton single-handedly stopped the deployment of a national missile defense system, exposing every American life to a missile attack, leaving America with no defense whatsoever against an intercontinental ballistic missile.
We have been undermined for years by politicians willing and able to sell their souls for anything. WE ARE F*CKED…..
Both political parties have romanced the Chinese, and this is the smelly outcome.
I think China is a bigger threat to itself than to the west, only time will tell.
Okay…..
Enough of this specious argument about Carriers.
It's one thing to have them. It's quite another to able to employ them, protect them and have pilots experienced enough to operate from them under the command of a fleet structure experienced enough to safeguard them and resupply them.
It doesn't happen overnight.
Unless COMSUBPAC suddenly re-introduced Porpoise-class boats, a determined COMSUBPAC would waste any opposing Carrier force,………… very quickly. Carriers project power, as long as they are unmolested. Otherwise, they are big targets.
If history is written honestly..(I know, I know)……
the Clintons were/are the worst thing to ever happen to this country.
Far worse than President Nincompoop.
i agree. The chinese haven't invented or discovered anything of significance in about 500 years.
The China shop is mostly a lot of bull………………
I'm not buying the hype.
counterfeit Viagra
Well,……not necessarily a bad thing……
…….
I'm kidding…
I agree. China has problems that we have either dealt with loooong ago or don't have to deal with.
a house of cards largely populated by uneducated paupers…

Proofreading seems to be a lost art.
The Chinese are currently colonizing Canada, but nobody seems to care.
Have you been to Vancouver lately?
My brother has been there since the late nineties til 2007 and, intermittently since.
He would most definitely agree with you.
The media's drum-beating for China, along with Clueless Maobama, should tell everyone what they need to know,
They desire government control.
That's it.
Yep……..
except for the King Crab. I can't afford it.
Rush Limbaugh thought letting China into the World Trade Organization was a good idea. I don't think he has ever been more wrong.
For centuries, China was indeed a 'paper' dragon. Large and fierce in appearance, but quite harmless. The Chinese themselves added flesh and blood to the dragon with the development of nuclear weapons. The industrialized economies of the world gifted fangs to the dragon. The governments of the world gave the breath of fire to this increasingly dangerous beast. The consumers of the world supplied the rope with which we have bound ourselves to prevent our fight or flight as the dragon scorches the Earth around us.
Your beeing to hard on them. No won is perfect…
TFF!
I guess I just had a moment when a ray of darkness shone down through the sunlight.
Henceforth, I shall endeavor to be clever; I shall try to be wry; I shall, in future (pronounced FEW-chahhhh, in the British style), keep my spirits pointed at the sky, even, yea verily, as is the weiner of Anthony.
I expected to get blasted for elevating style over substance, so I truly appreciate your comment.
Even more, I appreciate your service to our great nation, the greatest ever known.
Funny stuff!
What you say is not intuively obvious, but let's consider that a moment…
Dems keep referring to the Clinton years as the "miracle economy", the "Golden years". Number one, he had the wind at his back with the end of the cold war peace dividend (kudos RR), the lucky timing of a recession ending just as he entered office; the lucky timing of an internet technology revolution, and policies of a Republican Congress that he shamelessly co-opted.
But let's remember a few other things. The seeds of the mortgage meltdown of 2008 were planted on his watch. He's the one that recruited multiple industries to push home loans to the masses, whether credit qualified or not. On his watch, Greenspan ignited the tech stock bubble debacle. He had the China dealings described above. He stuck troops in harms way in Somalia, tied one hand behind their back, and then as soon as they sacrificed lives to complete the mission – he yanked them out….sacrifices for nothing, but Bin Laden noted the "paper tiger" behavior. Then we had World Trade Center bombing #1, etc. And of course, there was Monica et al and TrooperGate.
Taking a closer look, the Dems "miracle years" set the stage for lots of later trouble.
In Slick Willy's defense however, at least he was not a communist.
"…as is the weiner of Anthony"
Now that is some funny stuff. You do your best work in the sunlight…
"The Chinese themselves added flesh and blood to the dragon with the development of nuclear weapons.
Nuclear weapons are an American development – the Commies stole a technology from us they would never have conceived of – let alone "developed" on their own (too many to list!). Never forget that it was Bill Clinton who made it possible for the Chinese to "develop" ICBMs capable of striking our West Coast. It was Loral Space Technologies that secured that little bit of political "favor"…
China will fail again soon… Not my "opinion" – a fact… They are still a "paper dragon", and a lot of that paper is the false premise their economy is built upon. They can never open their books for the world to see – they are worse off than Greece. Trust me – time will tell…
I am happy to learn this.
Here's one example of what you're talking about related to aircraft carriers as big targets: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,511955,00.htm...
I've often tried to make similar comments such as yours, but to no avail. I thought that maybe an extended metaphor might do the trick! I normally am more specific in my discussion points, but few except the occasional troll will offer comment. Thanks for reading the post!
Indeed, the collusion of spies and theft of technology led to the development of nuclear weapons by China. This is beyond dispute. I remember well the transfer of patent information and side deals that were made by the Clinton White House. Being a traitor in America today seems to be just the normal way to do business.
China will fail as a nation and economy, because they have not the historical perspective by which they have achieved the economic status they now currently enjoy. What took this nation 235 years to achieve, the Chinese seemingly have accomplished in just 35 years. They have risen to this status by the theft of technology and intellectual capital. They have also been aided by industrialists whom the Chinese government has recruited from across the globe.
The point of my post is to advise that the Chinese government is a threat to all who inhabit this world. Governments and individuals are responsible for this growing menace, regardless of their best intentions. China indeed will fail. History has proven that Corporatism or outright Socialism has never worked as an economy or State. A paper dragon is only as strong as the internal foundation of supports. The visible skin is very frail. The Chinese economy lacks the foundational wisdom that only occurs after a lifetime of thought and empirical trials. It is akin to a freshman college student in the second week of their first semester suddenly having all of the knowledge necessary to go out and make their way in the world because they have simply sat in a classroom for a few hours. When China fails as an economy and the imported capital tries to flee, will they let it go? When production falls, or the exports dry up, what will they do for money? They have 'loaned' this government and others quite a bit of cash over the past few years. Will they 'call in' this debt? What will we offer to China in return for the promissory notes that we have issued? These are some of the issues that leave us bound, as if by rope. The metaphor of the dragon scorching the Earth should require no explanation.
I know what you mean. But my hubs is a pharma chemist, and I've learned that tt's a painstaking process to manufacture a drug properly, so it doesn't kill you when you take it. God knows what those Chinese are putting into those fake drugs!
And don't forget the "isles" in the American supermarkets! Good grief, basic proofreading is not that hard!!!!!
Exactly. I only buy what moos, oinks, clucks, or blooms on US soil.
Seems to me they can't be too much of a paper dragon with as HUGE of a military as they have, and a gender imbalance (from aborting baby girls) so high that they simply have millions of men in their society who will not be able to find wives and raise families. I would think the obvious solution to this gender imbalance problem, in the eyes of the Communist leaders, is to think of these men as so much cannon fodder. You can raise a huge army and if they happen to die in a war, you ease the problem considerably. Scares the crap out of me, actually.
So what do we do ? Tell our bosses to stop profiteering from our death ? They don't care , American business is in the pocket of the communists.
How I fight is to buy as little as possible and what food we buy is grown here . I cannot manufacture my own medicines or electronics and machines. This is where we shall fall.
Then again a change in government and a good kick in the ass to the American traitor businesses , and we might just survive.
BUY AMERICAN OR EUROPEAN to SAVE YOU GRAND CHILDREN'S FUTURE.
Add to that long list the chips, computer boards, etc that are being manufactured in China for our defense dept. Talk about foxes in the hen house.
That is so true. I've collected a pretty wide range of misspellings, malapropisms, redundancies and just plain stupid, umm, let's say "stuff," for quite a few years. I think that particular book idea is past its best-if-used-by date, however. It seems the few of us who give a care are voices in the bewilderness, as it were, and is, and shall forevermore be, if you will.
Oh, and how about the phrase in another BigGovernment article, "…an horrific…(something or other)"? How hard is it to understand? Aitch is most often a consonant, becoming a vowel only when rendered silent. Using the article "an" to precede the consonant aitch is an affectation, sheer puffery.
Thanks a whole heap!
A large military in a Socialist economy is an effect of a lack of otherwise productive expenditures. Are they volunteers in the same sense that our men and women in arms are? Or are they conscripted and forced to "serve"? How well trained can they be – vs the willingly professionally trained American? The Soviets suffered the same problem – a need to "create or maintain" "jobs". Forced conscription in an evil society that robs you of your natural rights can ill-afford to have many men of the mind in charge of the guns. They are likely largely incompetent idiot sheep… Leadership matters – especially in times of war…
The Chinese lack the resources to sustain any military adventure outside of their immediate borders – as an army "runs" on it's stomach. The current gender imbalance is far more likely to result in a "civil war" than a successful campaign of conquest.
War is far more popular amongst the political class than "the masses". Despite racial or ethnic pride, most people want to be left alone to raise their families and enjoy their lives.
Worry far more about what your "investment advisers" or the people who run your 401k plan are thinking when it comes to China and the future, rather than what their sick, twisted (and doomed) society is up to. They have fundamental problems so deep that all the doom and gloom we suffer from is a paper cut by way of comparison…
Sleep well – if it is China that worries you most…
I have often worried that we may no longer have the knowledge or ability to turn our plowshares back into swords.
"I cannot manufacture my own medicines or electronics and machines. This is where we shall fall."
You are absolutely correct! A nation that does not produce the goods that it consumes, is no longer considered to be a country: It is a colony, subject to all of the rules and regulations issued by a foreign power. We are then forced to lick the hands and kiss the asses of our masters who provide for us. With every Chinese manufactured television and each Chinese woven shirt that we purchase, we are forging yet another link to our already ponderous chain of economic slavery. This issue is not only economic: It is a matter of our national survival in an increasingly hostile world.
were facing one of the worlds oldest civilizations, thses people have been to hell and back. we need to bring our A game, but alas i see were stuck at c-.
It appears that if the BO has his way we will shortly not have any industry left to counter a heavy Chinese buildup. He is quickly seeing to it that what little industry we still have moves to friendlier shores as a result of the strangling regulation his trolls in the various fed agencies are implementing..
In the past, China and Japan wasn't getting along. What if they form an alliance?
China isn't listed in or with the 4 Major World Powers in the Scriptures….that come and go. However, it seems that their Army is destroyed at Armageddon, where the very last war occurs. Other mid-east wars happen before this final event.
Of the 70 nations that were created after the Tower of Babel situation, China is probably listed as "The Land of Shinar"…not sure about that, although.
I'm don't think the Chinese are stupid enough to poison their best customers while selling them inferior products of all kinds. Do inferior and counterfeit products come from China? Of course. It is incumbent on the buyers to check quality before paying for the goods. It goes against common sense to think the Chinese are purposely loading the world with products thast will ultimately cause them to lose business because of customer dissatisfaction.
The Chinese are a very clever people, but they have the millstone of Communism around their necks. After World War II, the Communists (Chairman Mao) indulged in decades of self-inflicted economic wounds in trying to force collectivization of the people into an ‘ideal’ society…while their counterparts in Europe, who also started from a totally destroyed industrial base, had an unprecedented Capitalistic expansion in their economies.
But the Chinese are a very clever people. The Chicoms noticed that there was one tiny area in their huge country that out produced all the rest – Hong Kong. When the British returned Hong Kong to the Politburo, instead of trying to force it to become Communist, the Chinese leaders embraced the Capitalist nature of the tiny island and tried to turn the whole country into ‘State Capitalism’. Of course this is actually a form of Fascism, but it works so much better than the old ‘Pure Communism’ that they truly do have a Tiger by the tail. Whether China can ultimately resolve the unstable contradiction between Communism and Capitalism remains to be seen.
What happens next: Revert to the self-immolation of Communism? Move to a less controlled form of Capitalism? Keep the Fascism they have now, with inevitable internal power struggles and fights? Launch a series of imperialistic local wars to divert the people’s attention from internal problems? The only sure bet is that those in control now will not give up the power easily.
So tell me, oh great knower of all things economical, exactly how much of "the rich's" money should we confiscate? What amount of income constitues "rich"?
What you don't realize, dumbass, is that the more money they take from "the rich" the more "the rich" will begin to relocate since they have the means to do so. The more "the rich" relocate, the fewer jobs there are, and the less money you have to make to be considered part of "the rich".
Blaming China would not work. What works is to examine how the American economy is being eroded, so called Environment protection issues destroy American jobs. In the California region, thousands of farmers and workers lost jobs, fruit, vegetable productions in order to protect some fish species. This does not make sense. One thing that can really work with China is this. Evangelizing China will work wonders. It makes both China and America and the world prosper. Christian China would be safe for itself and the world.
what? "I" the government? No wonder our debt crisis is so terrible. You are the government. lol
As a fellow Ex-Jarhead, that was also a proofreader, I agree with you. The problem is everyone relies on spell-check, but that doesn't check for context, I always try to read through everything a second time just to make sure before I post.
The Chinese carrier is conceptual, and a ways off, if ever. At the present, no nation in the world can match up with our naval firepower. We're still the best.
