Dead Hand of Government Impoverishes the Middle Class
by Chriss W. StreetMichael Spence, Nobel Laureate and former Dean of the Stanford Business School, has just published a rigorous economic analysis called: “The Evolving Structure of the American Economy and the Employment Challenge.” The report illuminates how the unbridled growth of government consumption spending has destroyed America’s productivity leadership, driven entrepreneurs to off-shore production, and destroyed middle class wage rates.
Adam Smith, 18th Century English economist, pioneered the concept of the “invisible hand” to describe how capitalism through self-interest, competition, and supply and demand, more effectively allocated resources than the “dead hand” of the state; it levied punitive taxes, adopted restrictive regulations, and enforced monopolies to favor their crony allies. Smith described how English entrepreneurs flourished after their King’s feudal dominance of the economy was liberated by adopting the laissez-faire economics that allowed transactions between private parties to be free from the state’s coercion. Smith described how new wealth was rapidly created and compounded over time form the productivity gains of the Industrial Revolution that leveraged the value of workers and led to higher wages.
The Spence report illuminates that from 1988 to 2008, America’s productivity dominance collapsed by 70%; shrinking from 2.5% gain per year to only .7% per year. This crash in American leadership was the result of 98% of the 27.3 million new jobs created during the period coming from the lower productivity, and thus lower wage, “consumption” sector of the economy. Higher productivity, and thus higher wage, “goods-producing” sector grew by only 620,000 jobs. The root cause of this substitution for lower productivity jobs was a 23% growth in government, to 22.5 million workers, and a 63% growth in government dominated healthcare, to 16.3 million workers. Productivity for the American goods-producing sector continued to grow by a healthy 2.3% per year, but productivity of government workers sunk by 4% and productivity of healthcare workers plummeted by 9%.
In 1988 the average value added for American workers was $75,000. Over the last twenty years, America’s revolution in information-technologies helped drive up the valued added of a goods-producing American worker to $115,200 per year. But the productivity value of government and healthcare worker tumbled to $72,000 per worker; dragging down the average value added of American workers to only $90,750. That $24,450 loss of productivity explains allot about why the American middle class wages have been shrinking in the United States.
Adam Smith identifies the “entrepreneur” as the invisible hand that shifted economic resources out of lower and into higher productivity activities for and greater reward. If the invisible hand is expected to be busy shifting resources from lower to higher productivity; why has America shifted resources from higher to lower productivity jobs?
Welcome to the wonderful world of the “dead hand” of government. Over the last two decades the U.S. government has vastly increased punitive taxes, restrictive regulations, and enforced monopolies in favor of their crony allies. This result has been a loss of 7.5 million goods-producing jobs in the last twenty years. That trend accelerated over the last ten years with the closure of 57,000 factories and the loss of 5.5 million higher paid goods-producing jobs.
Entrepreneurs are not stupid! They did their arithmetic and figured out that the outrageous costs of paying twice China’s corporate tax rate, complying with punishing regulations, and competing against cronies like General Electric over-whelmed the productivity advantage of hiring an American workers. Entrepreneurs also recognized that even though they did not benefit from the 13.7% compound growth of government spending; the Congressional drumbeat to raise taxes on millionaires to pay for trillions of dollars of deficits, are “code words” for taxing entrepreneurs.
The bottom line is the “dead hand” of government has diminished the productivity of American workers by changing the structure of our economy to favor of the lower wage consumption sector, at the expense of the higher wage goods-producing sector. This government coercion has resulted in the invisible hand of entrepreneurs closing U.S. factories, moving goods-production off-shore, and impoverishing middle class wages. Entrepreneurs will not build new American factories and bring back higher paying middle class jobs until our government cuts taxes, deregulates industry, and stops favoring crony allies.

Good article!
Unfortunately, too many Americans don't understand this lesson. The current progressive trend in Washington will do to this nation what collectivist policies have done to all others. It is a policy of "equal misery for all". But what the heck, progressives say; at least it's EQUALITY of misery! It will create an environment in which everyone is battling to get a bigger piece of an ever-shrinking pie, without reasoning that the shrinking pie exists because of those same policies. Let's hope America wakes up soon, because otherwise, America is going to become a land of less pie, and more hunger!
Detroit, CA,CT, IL, NJ, NY, MA, what do they all have in common? Successfully driving evil capitalists out of town in search of greener pastures. Long term dimnocrat bastions. Soon all complete failures. Any questions?
We can only hope that our elected representatives either read this themselves, or have a trusted minion read it and distill it for them. They need to understand the consequesnces of government spending. QUIT listening to anyone that spouts the Keynes LIES!!!
The best part about this article is the citation of dollar-productivity figures. I can't remember seeing such anywhere else — and if they're accurate, they explain a great deal about both the explosion of Americans' standard of living these past two decades, and also how the predator class — what, you think government produces something? Okay, yes, it produces deficits, but still — has responded to it.
(Incidentally, calling government and its myrmidons "the predator class" is guaranteed to get a rise out of any left-liberal you know. Guaranteed to break the ice at a stodgy party!)
Progressivism in short is tyranny in a velvet gloved fist, you reap what you sow libs.
Flip your local liberal, one a week is all we ask!
Too bad this has nothing to do with the article cited. He mentions a report to create credibility and to give the false impression that the economists concur with his spin.
Here are a few excerpts from the actual report:
"One possible response to these trends would be to assert that market outcomes, especially efficient
ones, always make everyone better off in the long run. That seems clearly incorrect and is supported
by neither theory nor experience."
Ouch, that doesn't sound all free-markety, now, does it?
How about this:
"To create jobs, contain inequality, and reduce the U.S. current-account deficit, the scope of
the export sector will need to expand. That will mean restoring and creating U.S. competitiveness
in an expanded set of activities via heightened investment in human capital, technology,
and hard and soft infrastructure."
Dang, that sounds like Obama. To be competitive and "contain inequality," we're going to need to invest. That doesn't sound like cutting spending!
Do you think the author of this blog post actually read the report? It's awfully Democratic.
The proper term is "regressivism" Adjust and carry on.

You must work in the public sector as you seem to think that the only possible vehicle for "investment" is through it.
It isn't, this occurs in the private sector also. And in the free market there is nothing wrong with it.
And you are so smart that you can make sense of a 55 page report using only two paragraphs, one of them from the executive summary section. Wow, that's pretty smart. I am awe struck. Yes that is sarcasm.
Are you a college professor like Obama?
Hey let me ask you a question. Is this an example of comrade Obama's capitalistic tendencies?

In a town-hall style meeting conducted by CBS News on Wednesday, Obama said the weak housing market and high gasoline prices were the biggest "headwinds" dragging on the economy.
"We've got a lot more work to do to get businesses to invest and to hire," he told the audience in remarks broadcast on Thursday."
Who is we? Why does he think that businesses will hire people only after he tells them to and does a lot of "work"? What "work" is needed?
That's not capitalism, that's big government statist double talk.
How about this one?
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/05/12...
"President Obama responds to a woman who was laid off from her government job: "Let me just first of all say that workers like you, for the federal, state, and local governments, are so important for our vital services. And it frustrates me sometimes when people talk about 'government jobs' as if somehow those are worth less than private sector jobs. I think there is nothing more important than working on behalf of the American people."
That's some awesome capitalism right there isn't it.
Oh, wait a minute. He is talking about the state. No it isn't.
And you still offer no proof that he is a capitalist, funny if it is true it should be all over the place.
Too bad the slobbering psychophantic drones of these baselessly narcissistic elitist jagoffs apparently can't operate a calculator, or abacus either. Unbelievably, they seem not to grasp the consequences of the parasite outgrowing the host. Incroyable miscreants.
Statism.

Very good article (other than the annoying typos)! Liberals I know don't seem to understand the fact the reason these gadzillionaires they despise are that wealthy is because their buddies in D.C. picked them as winners – in exchange for campaign cash of course. It's a vicious circle that benefits only the chosen few within the ruling class.
Leave it to a regressive to look at black and call it white.
B-b-but…they used the word infrastructure?!?!?
Tell me moron, just what does human capital have to do with intrusive government meddling, failing government over-funded schools, back door Federal Reserve policy, insane spending on useless rail projects, job destroying lack of coherent, feasible energy policies and refusal to enforce existing immigration laws, thereby bringing more people into a depressed – yes, it's depressed no matter what the kneepads say – economy. Yeah, that sounds a lot like O'Ben Hogan all right.
Contain inequality. Gee, how steeped in obtuse progressive agitation rhetoric. Wanna contain inequality?
Provide a climate of opportunity, not hand-outs, jackass.
2 plus 2 = ?
I only wish the hand of government were dead. It's very much allive and choking the life out of business everywhere it can.
Oh, I get it now. The real problem — even though government has been increasing in size and scope for years — isn't that we have too much government, it's that we have too little government. Silly me. If we'd only pile more and more on top of what we already have, we'd once again find ourselves at the top.
I guess I should just ignore the historical fact that as a government's role in an economy increases, economic performance and competitiveness decrease.
inequality can be, at best, minimized by way of increased social morals and of course,……
by a political ideology.
You musta been asleep during the twentieth century,…..ay ????
Who want to invest in restoring and creating U.S. competitiveness in an expanded set of activities via heightened investment in human capital, technology, and hard and soft infrastructure when the government takes most of your profit?
I would prefer to see the government cut the corporate tax rate and get the hell out of the way.
It's getting to where I can just give you a thumbs down without reading your drivel. Love it!
Go perform an anatomically-impossible act.
Poor people are easier to govern — and, therefore, easier to control. The two things go hand-in-hand.
Government is the mack-daddy of prison wardens when the citizenry is poor because that's when government truly holds all the power.

What tripe!
I read somewhere today that Obama commanded businesses to "step up and higher workers". He admonished businesses and banks to do more to help the economy.
He went on to say that taxpayers had invested ine economy buy paying out the stimulus, and now it was time for corporations and banks to bet on America. He also said that he bolstered manufacturing by 'saving' the auto industry.
I don't even know what to say to all that. When people hear things like that come out of his face, do they not say to themselves, 'this guy doesn't understand business, finance or economics?'
Foolish regressive!
"dead hand of government" is more like a bootheal on your neck.
LOL.
You don't get it, do you?
In order for companies to have the capitol to invest; taxes need to be lowered and GOVERNMENT spending needs to be curbed.
Today, Obama told businesses to 'step up and hire workers'. As if the fact that a business made some money means it needs more employees. The need for employees is dictated by DEMAND, not revenue. What are these companies going to do, pay people to stand around doing nothing just because it would help Obama's unemployment numbers?
I agree with the cut and paste about efficient market outcomes not always making everyone better off in the long run. But then again, does a government command economy make everyone better in the long run? Like the President commanding the hiring of people not needed, think those businesses will remain profitable? LOL
To be competitive and 'contain inequality' we are going to have to invest. And we do that by cutting out the inefficient middle man, the government. Cut government spending and lower taxes. Then companies can invest in what they NEED, not what some bureaucrats and academics sitting in a classroom and have never run a business or made a profit say they should do.
For anyone who wants a much more accurate analysis of what this study actually says, Pearlstein at the Washington Post did a column last month. It's worth a read, and it kills some sacred cows on both sides of the fence.
"What’s pretty clear, however, is that continuing to do what we’ve been doing — pushing down wages and taxes in the hope that free markets will somehow solve this problem — is folly." http://madeinusanews.com/2011/03/14/key-to-job-gr...
But the study itself is not long. Regardless, the only heavy hand here is Chriss (the extra "s" is for spin) Street's.
Christ, if you do the math and look at the amount of government social spending and compare it with the amount of folks living at and below the poverty level; we should have NO ONE in America living below the poverty line. The government does enough social spending alone to erradicate that. And that doesn't even include non-monetary entitlements. Clearly, the government is far from efficient or sound enough to solve any of these issues.
As for the inequality…..I still don't understand. We have a discrepency between the top 10% and the bottom 10%, obviously. Huge inequality……but the middle 60% of income earners are pretty damn close to being equal.
So, if the point of contention is that we have some folks at the top and some folks at the bottom, what's the solution? To take from the top and give to the bottom? We alrady do that, and it isn't working.
You should be mad at the government. You should be demanding the government figure out how to get the money it is taking from the rich to the people that need it. Because, all the statistics clearly show that the government is taking and spending enough to get the job. And yet, we still have poverty.
Our government has failed poor people, plain and simple.
I'm tired of government touching me with that dead hand….
I'm ready to cut it off….
Man, you are dumb as a stump. You just provided one instance of Obama talking to private businesses about their responsibility for job creation and that, to you, is a sign of his socialism? If he weren't a capitalist, why would he be prodding businesses to hire? A socialist wouldn't have to prod. He'd take over the businesses and hire himself (at least until the socialism brought down the economy).
And then you offer an example of the head of the federal government encouraging a government employee to take pride in her service. And that is socialist? Scott Walker just gave a similar speech in Wisconsin, telling government employees that he valued their service.
You couldn't make a point with a pencil sharpener. All your bad reasoning tells me is that you are so invested in the wrongheaded idea that Obama is not a capitalist, that you have become impervious to facts. It's sad. But America will roll on, and over you, just like we have done for decades.
Then now we know why you're here, don't we? Thanks for playing.
Dweeb.
Impoverished Middle Class – Communist obama & Co. call that "leveling the playing field" and "spreading the wealth". It's all part of the "Transformation" obama spoke of before we elected him. Nice choice America.
Indeed Saiingbum. I say to all it is past time to take our country back, not a piece at a time but in one fell swoop. I believe with all my heart and soul that if this country can be saved the Tea Party shall do it. Time for the largest rally in DC in history to demand mass resignations and end the madness. Waste fraud and abuse must end. Gov't picking winners and losers must end. Special interests have corrupted the men and women elected and appointed and they must go.

Strange, how that very fact holes the CSSR Progressive with a couple of Mk. 48's and they can't understand why their ship is sinking.
…or not.
Very close to the mark, my friend. You have exposed a very deeply hidden Talisman, amongst the crumbling progressive foundation. As an FO, I would say drop 20, Fire for Effect, call some TAC Air to be sure and then beat feet outta there and call it a day.
Easy to govern and easy to agitate. It is the root provider of the power they enjoy. Every Marxist Socialist Progressive organization is constructed on that foundation. Every. one.
Excellent and succinct! 10
The left through Pearlstien in the Wahington Post and Chrystia Freeland at Reuters spun Michael Spence's report as "Capitalism is Failing the Middle Class". Freedland stated: "Globalisation is making U.S. companies more productive, but the benefits are mostly being enjoyed by the C-suite." I agree the benefits are being enjoyed by the C-suite. Spell that "CRONY"
Big Government hates the middle class because they generate the entrpreneurs and want to be upwardly mobile. Poverty works for the left !
I honestly don't think Obama would comprehend this article. I believe he thinks a government paid job at 100k and a private sector job producing something at the same pay have an equal impact on our nation's success.
Really? ……and the s's in your moniker stand for Slivering Shiitehead?
There is just not a critical thought going on in the strawberry jell-o between your ears, is there? Inhale the fumes and pick up some more kneepads, for you are wise in the ways of the willingly clueless.
So regale us, brave Sir Robin. What does create wealth and drive prosperity? I suppose your answer would be the Fed printing more money to dole out to political sycophants and basement dwelling welfare suckers. Or, is it bloated government bureaucracy thats only claim to competence is the thoroughness of it's incompetence and inefficiency? How brave you are to attack the messenger, Sir Robin. You exploits are worth of mention in the Archives of the Drooling Infant Victim Order.
Name for us, if you will, one government program that has successfully; generated wealth and elevated the poor out of poverty and/or met, and has continued to meet, strict budget guidelines that do not rise above the inflation level.
You better hurry. It's time for the sheep to be fed.
After you do the cutting DSM, hand it off to me and I'll jam it up their keister.

I guess you are right. One would think they would be capable in learning from history.
But, I guess that is what the problem really is. This isn't about picking the economy back up. It's about installing socialism. Plain and simple. History tells us undeniably that we have had our best sucesses coming out of recessions by lowering taxes. If they cared about just fixing the economy, they'd do that. But they don't.
It is cut and dried. If you add up the amount of people that are living at or below the poverty line….multiply that by the amount of money it would take to get them out of poverty…..you get a number FAR below the amount the gov spends on entitlements; and that doesn't EVEN include non-monetary expenditures.
So, the numbers clearly tell us: the entitlement system as a means to fight poverty DOES NOT work when run by the government. You don't even have to be as smart as Obama to figure that out.
Yeah……….
that''s what I thought.
Then again, any answer in the affirmative would be a lie.
It doesn't matter to them. Only the appearance of helping the poor matters.
The creation, maintenance and prolongation of the poverty and victim classes is the goal. It is the source of their political power. Without those groups, the Democratic party would consist of senile celebrities and college professors.
Agreed.
That's my point. The Dems are many things, but they aren't 'dumb'. They can see the numbers.
i just don't understand why the GOP doesn't explain the numbers to the country.
We need a real candidate. The ones that have thrown their hats in the ring so far don't cut it. Romney may be the front runner, but he can't win. Christ, he is too busy defending his healthcare plan in Mass. It's a shame he has fallen into the political trap of never admitting you are wrong. He needs to just say that the plan was bad. But he can't do it.
You cannot argue with an ideologue.
His position is not based on actual factual analyses and reason, but on blind, unwavering belief – Faith, if you will – in his chosen leaders and media mouthpieces. It's the religion of Statism, and the Progressive ideologue is as devout as any religious follower can be, willingly and eagerly swallowing the Kool-Ade that his chosen leaders offer up.
Confront him with contradictory evidence, and he will evade, deflect, ignore, and or ridicule – whatever is required to defend his own perverse and religious belief in the State, the unquestionable Wisdom and Benevolence of the State, and blind obedience in all who lead the State.
The only thing you can do with an ideologue is amuse yourself with him – make him argue in circles, make him contradict his own assertions, make him reach so far into the absurd in defense of his Faith as to create your own personal comedy of errors in him. But do not waste great effort in serving up detailed research and information in a vain attempt to try to persuade, as it is exactly that – a waste.
But remember to take satisfaction in the knowledge that while he may find that Kool-Ade sweet and satisfying going down….. the aftereffects are a killer
This is how best to deal with drones such as Progressing.

I'm pleasantly astonished…..
I expected your post to read "No, the Jews are responsible!"
Which makes one wonder if the intent of the entitlement system is really to fight poverty…
To Hell with cutting…
I'm so pissed , that I'll just snap it off…
It's all about control and creating 'equality'.
Given no government intervention (or even minimal), the natural (normal) distribution of incomes is going to put some people at the top and some at the bottom.
That is what is so frustrating about socialism, they actually believe they can change the laws of nature.
The moron here is the Progressing fool. Got economics? Got finance?
Interest rates at near zero are doing more harm than good. Not only is it squeezing the middle class hard by forcing them to stash cash instead of placing it into savings, it is curtailing investments. The engine has stalled and we are in a free fall. The Federal Reserve refuses to raise rates which would help strengthen the value of our notes. Sure it wouldn’t be easy for people to get loans but it isn’t supposed to be easy. Banks will continue to sit on what they have and refuse loans because they do not have the personal investments from middle class savers. We are collapsing due in large part to no action from the Fed except the monetization of the nation’s debt.
"Man, you are dumb as a stump."
Your words–self-identification. The only thing you've said that had even a hint of truth to it.
"If he weren't a capitalist, why would he be prodding businesses to hire?"
You're kidding right? The leader of a country all but demanding job creation? Acting! That's what fascists do. Obama's not worried about job creation. Were he actually interested in job creation, the following link wouldn't show us as being positioned where we are:
http://www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/22...
Not to mention, he's siphoned off quite a bit from the private sector (adults know that as the wealth-creating part of society) to put as many self-serving pigs (unions, etc.) in his back pocket as he possibly can. Money that the actual wealth-builders could be using to get the economy going again.
Thanks for showing the disingenuousness/ignorance of regressivism.
Apology accepted
So: How do we stop it?…Sure, we're working to get Copnstitutional type candidates into office. Really, most Americans do not know what is going on.—
Great paper but useless at best since overwhelming majority will not see it, or even if they did, couldn't comprehend it.__When you have over half a century of cultural marxism imposed on the academia and popular culture (via entertainment), you get a bunch of zombies as citizens.__You cannot undo the damage overnight – or ever (since already half the population feels at home with progressive ideals even if they do not identify themselves as Dems or liberals ideologically)__Long and short of it is that people cannot critically think because they have been deliberately failed by the marxists in our education. Solution? There are few but they are long shots at best.
The constitutional, free market based crowd like us CANNOT coexist with the rest – whether they are hard core Dems of today (outright marxists), or big government Republicans like the Bushes or McCains of this world.
The only solution therefore is a peaceful divorce between the blue and consistently red states. This secessionist idea is nothing to be feared and would cause NO violence. Does anyone believe that the U.S. military would ever take any action against other Americans? No way. Furthering of this secessionist sentiment and eventual referandums to seccede would at least save like minded constitutionalists like many here. The rest can live in their dreamworld that can only end up in disaster.

This guy has got it totally wrong as usual. Speaking falsehoods repeatedly will not make them true. What productivity is this guy taking about. The U.S. has very productive over the last two decades. The problem is that of too little wages for that productivity. Businesses don't pay their employees enough to buy goods and services. Why running our jobs to China. Negative wage pressure and stagnation is the result. To keep the ball rolling the nation went into massive debt.
This the same old supply-side story that got us in trouble in the first place. Give the big boys a tax cut and the trickle down effect will kick in. You know what he is absolutely correct. We will get just that a trickle; look up the definition of the word before you jump for joy.
