What Does Raising the Debt Limit Mean to You Personally?

I look at it from the perspective of a parent trying to balance their checkbook and preserve the American Dream for their children.
For example, did you know that President Obama’s request to raise the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion through the next election comes to $20,000 per every American family. If we’re going to raise the debt burden of every American family by $20,000, we owe it to them to start cutting spending and tearing up those credit cards.
This week, I spoke on the House floor in support of “Cut, Cap, & Balance” as a solution to our debt crisis. Please watch my speech and let me know what you think.

If you put any trust in your government, you will sorely disappointed.
I might consider allowing an increase on the debt ceiling, provided they can show me at least 20 years of balancing a budget that pays the debt off.

I paid off a large debt once and it hurt real bad. But it was liberating once done.
My debt wasn't as large as the one our elected leaders have saddled us with. The hurt has to start now.
Interest and debt payments to China could be better spent in America.

Cut, Cap and Balance is a good Bill. The Balanced Budget Amendment is the most critical because it actually forces all future Fed Administrations to balance their budget just like Governors, Mayors and State Legislatures have to.
I hope we can get it through the vicious Dem Socialists in the Senate, and throw some red meat to The Marxist one last time.
What does it mean to me, personally?
It means our elected officials in Washington have once again sold out the working men and women of America to curry favor from their "Entitled Constituents". It means that my children's, and my grandchildren's birthrights have now been needlessly squandered, all to purchase votes from those who do not pay taxes..

What it means to me is a larger, and out of control government, with way to much unnecessary, and unaccounted for monies being spent. There's no reason whatsoever, nor can it be reasonably justified, for a governmental body, be it local, state, or federal, to spend monies it doesn't have. IMO, it's criminal behavior!
Debt is like embalming fluid, instead of blood. Debt only TAKES, it never gives. Debt dose not care and has no mercie. Perhaps Candidate Obamas jingle should have been "Debt and Change". But that would have required TRUTH on his part.

Thank you for giving us the chance to communicate our concerns with you directly. The plain, unalterable truth here is that no one, not even the US Government, can spend more than they earn. The longer this problem is pushed into the future, the worse the eventual pain will be. Congresses of both parties have, in the past, refused to make politically difficult decisions and instead have kicked the can further down the road. The question then, especially for the Democrats, is what happens when there's no more road.
If I were you, I would ask the members of the opposing party what would be the eventual endgame if nothing is done now. I can only see one answer: hyperinflation. My mother was old enough to remember the hyperinflation of the 1920's in Germany. Millions of people had their savings and assets wiped out. People were angry and we all know what happened after that.
BTW, If Obama somehow gets re-elected, I'm putting all my assets into gold and I won't care what price it is.

You are the very first person who has EVER asked for feedback.

I agree that the cut, cap part is ok. The problem with balancing the budget is that the feds use a different accounting method than business. The feds use the cash system that allows them to run up debt and not account for it until the debt is paid. A business uses the accrual system that balances the budget based on when the debt is created. The system of federal accounting would have to be changed before an effective balanced budget law could be enacted.

The last time we had to raise the debt limit, you mentioned that Obama voted against it. But you should also mention that Harry Reid voted against it, Dick Derban voted against it, Barbara Boxer voted against it, Nancy Pelosi voted against it, and Hillary Clinton voted against it. Were all those Democrats wrong then? And if so, why are they right now for wanting to raise the debt limit? I thiink we need some more hard-hitting attacks on the floor of Congress pointing out the hypocrisy that so many members seem to use with such ease. If they were not lying then, then they must be lying now in wanting to raise the limit. People are sick of the lying and hypocrisy. If you point it out and say to people, "Look, this is what they said and this is what I believe in and not matter what happens I'm sticking to it," that shows a lot of character, it shows a lot of heart, and it shows that somebody in Congress actually has some principles. It also shows that you're a leader.

I live in Washington State and I am praying that Rep McMorris Rodgers will take on Maria Cantwell for Senate next year – I think she could have easily beaten Patty (dumber than a bag of rocks) Murray but the state Republican party didn't even try to win the race! Thank God we have Kirby Wilbur in there now….maybe we can turn this crazy blue state back around!

OK so somebody steals your identity, they go out and run up big debts in your name. Wouldn't that person be classified a criminal? Well anyone who spends our children's money IS a criminal. Plain and simple. It's not enough to just balance the budget and then pay off the debt. We need to hold these CRIMINALS accountable! They need to be thrown in jail!

Thank you for actually asking what I think. I think that for too long members of BOTH sides of the proverbial aisle have been making promises that can not be kept. I also think that borrowing money in order to meet current financial obligations you can not otherwise make payment on does not get "your financial house in order". If you doubt me, ask anyone who has ever tried to play the shell-game by constantly transferring balances from one credit card to another.
I also think I am tired of the bastardization of the English language that takes place on a regular basis in Washington, D.C. A "cut" leaves you with LESS than you started with.
I think that if you assembled 6 median-income, blue collar, paycheck to paycheck existing, middle-America mothers and fathers, this problem would be figured out in less than 24 hours. Budgeting is not this difficult. You figure out how much money you have, you subtract your expenses, and then figure out what to do with the difference. If you have more obligations than income, then you need to lessen your obligations.
I further think that the "poll" showing that the majority of Americans would blame the Republicans if the debt ceiling would not be raised is based on a flawed premise that I completely reject.
And lastly, I think that asking for an additional $20,000 without having already "torn up those credit cards", every single last one of them, already says a lot about how truly serious about cutting spending Congress really is.

You can never pay off the debt. If you took all of the money and gave it to the FED. First you would have no money. Second you would have to borrow more money, from the FED, to pay the interest on the money you paid pack. It is imposable to pay off the debt with unconstitutional fiat money. The FED is a ponzi scheme that rewards the Rothschild family and, traps the tax payer with debt.

Not at all. Many members of Congress in the past have voted against the debt ceiling limit to make a point, BUT only when they know their VOTES against it are meaningless because there are already enough votes for it to pass.
Reagan (who tripled the National Debt said), "The full consequences of a default — or even the serious prospect of default — by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate. Denigration of the full faith and credit of the United States would have substantial effects on the domestic financial markets and the value of the dollar." And the Debt ceiling was raised many times under Reagan, and every other President.
The Bush tax cuts ($1.4 trillion tax cut in 2001, followed by a $550 billion second round in 2003) plus the Medicare D, the unnecessary war in Iraq contributed enormously to the national debt. All those tax cuts didn't create jobs at all.

May I suggest silver. I'm already all in. It's up about $12 an ounce in a few months. It would have been higher if Soros hadn't dumped a lot of if. It was almost up $20 an ounce. He did this to discourage buying silver. I try to get paid in silver too (nontaxable trade). Supposedly there is going to be a correction on silver that should make it skyrocket. But you know how rumors go.

During this whole deal, I have heard people from the fed say we need to raise the debt ceiling, people from the treasury, wall street blowhards, and even people from the IMF, not to mention the plethora of congressman, senators, and blowhards like Bill O'Reilly. This looks a lot like " I am going to abandon free market principles to save the free market" or "too big to fail".

Most Americans seem to not have a problem with taxes, as long as somebody else is getting taxed.
I'm kind of hoping the U.S. government's credit rating does get downgraded. Anything that makes it harder for the government to borrow has got to be an improvement.

Offer discount on work. I fix PC's usually $50 cash to fix virus, but will accept 1 oz silver instead(currently under $40. As far as I'm concerned they can't tax anything I don't report or deposit. But technically your work for money is an exchange, and not income. Income defined in the tax code is investments, interest, etc everything except money for labor or trade of goods. How this got perverted I'll never know. If you pay me in deer meat how can I pay a % to the government, in jerky? Silver is not US currency, except for a couple of states, so this is a trade for goods. If you ever sell the silver for money, then that would be taxable, as now it is income. Technically the taxable amount would be; the difference in value from when you received it, to when you sold it. Bernanke himself said gold is not money, so silver cannot be either.
The fact is the constitution demands all money be coined of silver and gold. Just think how wealthy we would be had they not broken that law.

I'm happy that the Republicans are standing firm on the raising of taxes.
HOWEVER, many of us believe, me included, that the debt ceiling should NOT be raised at all. Not one thin dime. Not one penny.
The Federal Government needs to be cut down to a proper, Constitutional size. If spending is cut, then there is no need to raise the debt ceiling. We can't keep borrowing to pay towards other money borrowed. Americans don't last long financially if they are paying their Master Card bill with their Visa card.
I know that for many of you, and for the entire Left and even many Americans, that the idea of really figuratively attacking the Federal Government and its size sounds radical. We don't think it is. We are asking to return to the Constitution, to our Founding, and to the principles thereof.
We know that it will be painful. But it will be more painful if the country collapses under the weight of the debt and spending.

Very good Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, It's so good to have the few of you bringing things to our attention and ask for an exchange of ideas. You can understand that it's hard to believe that anybody REALLY cares what the voters think anymore, but we welcome the sentiment anyways.
I don't remember exact dates, but I think I can pinpoint the decade anyways- during the Clinton administration where there was a scandal in the capitol hill banks where the congress folks would continue personal spending far beyond where their checkbooks could take them. And guess who bailed out the banks who no longer had any "credit" to extend those nitwits. US citizans at the time were told that anybody sent to DC just looses any sense of reality after awhile of breathing the air up there.
We need youse guys to find a new sense of reality up there. come back down to earth. We sent a message in 2010, but I wish it could have been stronger- perhaps strong enough to put the Freshmen in charge of the majority… Just please keep us li'l folk involved. Some Representitives (Bachmann, McCotter, King, and hopefully now you) have been doing a great job of doing just that. My family doesn't have $20k more to give to the government.
When Social Security Act was passed back in the 20's there were 42 paying for 1; soon it'll be 2 paying for 1. I saw this coming years ago, got out of debt, and learned to live on less. What did I do? I quit working, took care of my ailing mother for 10 years, saved enuf from her pension & SS checks for her to be able to live comfortably in a nice nursing home once it got to be impossible for me to take care of her. During those 10 yrs, I protested abortion,. Now I'm retired, living on $1,100 SS a month, and hounding every liberal initiative I can find on the Internet. I also did a penance, fund-raising walk for Pro Life causes last summer. Have a nice day, America.

When the Senate gets around to passing their joke the Repubicans in the House should take the bill and amend it with the spending cuts of cut, cap, and balance. They remove any tax increase. And then send it back to the Senate. Lets see some real leadership by Harry and Barrack. After all they didn't think that the Repubicans had any back in 2006.

Well, the sad thing is that the Hubris of Washington DC is still the main rule of thumb rather than the humble pie that should be eaten by the Democrats who forced their idea of government and the Nanny State upon us poor pleebes out here in the wilderness.
First, the Republicans need to keep hammering the Democrats with this simple message:
You spent us into oblivion. Now you want to tax us into Hell.
Spend and Tax and cry over the crisis to spend and tax some more.
This stuff has been going on since Lyndon Johnson.
Sad doesn't cover half of it.
Obama's administration is like one of those movies in which the guy offers to housesit for his boss, assuring him all will be well. But he ends up trashing the house, wrecking the car, maxing out the boss's credit cards, ruining all his relationships and running his business into the ground.

It's actually not a good bill. It cuts practically nothing ($111B is pennies off the budget), it caps spending at levels well in excess of the post-WWII avg of GDP, and when you exempt social security, medicare and the military budget from any cuts, caps or balances, how can you call it a balanced budget?
And a balanced budget leaves too much room for Washington games. They can raise taxes so that the budget looks balanced on paper, but if projected revenues don't match real revenues, then we can still run a deficit. IMO a better way is to cap spending to the previous year's revenue – X%, where X is used to start paying down the debt.
Ok folks! Time for a little feature I call calculator time. This is where we pull out the trusty 'ole pushy, buttony, addy thing and use it to make sense of silly and incomprehensible numbers. That and it helps to detect BS, like when a politician claims that doubling the number of people on government healthcare will only add an additional tenth of the cost of taking care of the current folks. Let's see… Total medicare and medicaid, etc, etc, cost about a trillion annually, but doubling the number of people on the programs will only cost an additional 100 billion (or 10%) of the current cost… See, even your calculator can become an effective BS detector when used properly.
Obviously MSM journalists have yet to discover that MS Windows comes with a calculator built in. Hmmm….
Moving right along… What Rep. Rodgers just explained to me was that, raising the debt limit for the next year, or so, will mean that every family in America will have a loan taken out in their name for 20,000 dollars just in the next year. This is obvious since we ALL know they will borrow, print, and pretend EVERY dime of it.
I think that most of us also recognize that this debt will NEVER actually be repaid. Under our current system, the budget NEVER actually gets smaller and the overall debt NEVER actually shrinks, regardless of whether republicans or democrats are "in charge."
Now, it's calculator time… If I divvy up Rep. Rogers' numbers, she assumes that there are about 120 million families in the US. Multiply that by some parents and kids, sounds fair enough. The real perspective hits when you realize that the last federal budget (2010) was about 3.5 trillion and rising with every year. That means that, the federal government could afford to simply give every American family about 30,000 a year, thus instantly winning the war on poverty, as no family would be under the official poverty level any longer with that income.
Wait! It gets better! If you figure only half the population are really paying income taxes anyway, after refunds, then you might as well not give any of that to the "rich" people, thus half the population could be getting 60,000 a year. Obama's mad money stash indeed! That's a lot better than some one time 400 dollar "stimulus" check, right?
"But wait," you say. "What about the military budget and the other things the feds are actually SUPPOSED to do?" Not a problem my friend. Once again, the magic calculator comes to the rescue. The government only spends about a trillion dollars a year on vaguely constitutional functions. That leaves about 2.5 trillion a year. Back to our 20,000 dollars per family number, or 40,000 dollars a year if we don't give any money to the rich people who actually pay the taxes for all of this.
So there you have it! An instant solution to everything. With that kind of additional income, each family could get their own health insurance, buy groceries without food stamps, and be good little spending consumers. Poverty quashed in an instant, and we could still afford our full military budget and all sorts of additional nonsense. Doesn't that sound so much more efficient than having all these expensive programs that do not re-distribute nearly as much wealth for the same price?
On an interesting side note, the 2010 budget set aside 164 billion dollars to pay the interest on the national debt. Based on the estimated 14 trillion dollar number, that is a payment of slightly more than one percent. Just to put that in actual human people terms, that's like making a 50 dollar minimum payment on a maxed out 5000 dollar credit card. And they wonder why the debt never seems to go down. I have friends with credit cards who do the same thing the government is doing and just can't figure out why they never seem to be able to pay the silly card off. I'm sure the government gets better rates then most credit card consumers, but really? Come on folks. The government is more like my ex than my ex is….
If you haven't lately, rediscover your calculator. Send it flowers, maybe a box of chocolates. It's a better friend than you think!
The National Debt is like having an overdrawn, over the Limit Charge Card, with interest.
The Deficit is like having an overdrawn checkbook.
Income has been lessened because of a poor working conditions economy.
Start simply, stop subsidies for the most part.
Get Czars off of payroll (very small step).
Stop The Federal Education programs, it is a State Issue and Right.
Open the off shore drilling businesses…which Obama stopped, so we can buy oil from Brazil, his Socialist Buddy nation!
Military? I don't really know what to do…I suggest we get our military out of Germany!
Stop bailing out nations!
Look, most of us are not real econmists, but we all have a contribution for the solution to this temporary problem.
We shouldn't have to pay interest for our own money! No money was put into circualtion for the interest portion of the debt…..that's the real scam, that the MSM won't publish…They don't even know!
