Will Gingrich SuperPac’s and DNC’s Latest Medicare Fraud Attack Draw Romney’s Blood?
by Charles C. JohnsonLast week I wrote about Damon Corp. and Mitt Romney’s ties to a company that had committed one of the largest Medicare fines in Massachusetts history ($119 million) and how Rick Tyler of Newt Gingrich’s Super Pac was seeking to make it a part of the debate in Medicare-dependent Florida. The full video is here:
Today, the Democratic National Committee has released a memo criticizing Mitt Romney and his involvement, which it sent to Politico. The DNC has deliberately connected the dots to Governor Rick Scott, the unpopular Republican governor who was once called the “Madoff of Medicare” after he was forced to resign as CEO of a company involved in what became the largest Medicare fraud to date.
A newly released book, The Real Romney, written by Michael Kranish and Scott Helman, provides more details on how Mitt Romney dealt with the problem and how Democrats made an issue of it in 2002. (Romney’s opponent in the gubernatorial race accused him of lax oversight at Damon Corp.)
Four company executives would be charged with conspiring to defraud Medicare; one received a three-month jail sentence. Prosecutors said a former Damon employee had blown the whistle on the billing practices. And the government
…although some of the fraud occurred during Romney’s time on Damon’s board, he and other board members were never implicated in the case. The Damon case raised a recurring question about corporate governance: how much responsibility does a board member have for what happens at a company he helps oversee? In his comments about Damon, Romney seemed at times to hold two views of the matter, both of them to his benefit. On the one hand, he said he hadn’t know what was going on at Damon; on the other, he said he’d helped to put a stop to practices later found to be fraudulent. One thing that looked good at Damon was the bottom line for Bain. (154-155).
It bears repeating that there is still an ethical question about how much a board member ought to be held accountable for actions undertaken by management, though it seems if Mitt Romney is claiming credit for creating jobs as a board member he ought to also get opprobrium when things go awry at firms on whose board he sits. And unlike the previous Bain attack, which I debunked here, the Medicare fraud at Damon Corp. actually happened.
Hopefully the Romney campaign will have a better response to this questionable practice than it did to the tax releases. Indeed, if Romney were smart, he would use the opportunity to highlight some of the necessary reforms for Medicare and Social Security.

"It bears repeating that there is still an ethical question about how much a board member ought to be held accountable for actions undertaken by management,"
I dont know about anyone else, but when someone is working for me, and they screw up, they are told to pack their bags and get down the road, RIGHT NOW.
But the answer to the headline, is you can count on it
After being slimed by the media in '98 Gingrich resigned due to continued ethics charges from Dem Congressmen…. and was later completely exonerated by the IRS. In spite of the fact that Gingrich was exonerated, Romney has continued to push the meme that Gingrich "resigned in disgrace" due to ethics charges…. So do I think Gingrich will grab this and run with it? Oh yeah.
At this point, after so many ludicrous, left wing diatribes against Mitt, little of what Newt says will stick.
Making accusations that Mitt held Fanny stock (through his mutual fund) was more than laughable–it was pure left wing demagoguery.
Even Wolf Blitzer showed Newt up in the Florida debate, where he came across as simply argumentative. He's clearly missuing the "media card" at this point.
He has gone off the reservation and, if he does sink in Florida, should bow out gracefully.
I don't look at this primary as just a process for picking a nominee. I view it as boot camp for the onslought the nominee will face from the Obama machine in the general. If they fight dirty now, good. Let them get used to dealing with it. The experience of going up against a lowlife, lying scumbag dog and his hitmen in the media will not be new to them. Perhaps we can avoid another John McCain fiasco. In this campaign, fighting fair is for a nominee who doesn't really care if the country goes straight to a marxist utopian Hell.
America…all 'real' conservatives can only wait until CFR Newt and NWO Romney implode under the pressure of these attacks…to make way for the only 'real' conservative in this race…Rick Santorum!
He is a man without any skeletons and lots of baggage to bring to the table…he is a man of integrity and honor…a man that values GOD…family and country! He has the experience and has exhibited the knowledge on getting the job done…and he will have MY vote in 2012…how about yours?
Santorum telling it like it is…and not backing down!

Much of this is from the Ted Kennedy play book. When Romney ran for the senate against Kennedy this is the same attacks he faced. Nothing new here much has been out there for a long time and not had much of an effect. Unless they can come up with something new or Romney fails to knock these down with the same energy from the senate race they won't be too damaging. The attacks on both Newt and Mitt are rehashed stories that have been in the public domain. Most have been debunked or explained . I think the damage is more with the Republican party come November regardless who the nominee is, the Dems will use all of these against the Republican nominee and the party as a whole. Remember their mantra will be that the "Republicans are out of touch with the average voter. And look, they are out of touch with their own." It's not true, but what's true doesn't matter anymore.
The entire system that works with, or in government is a fraud. Without exception, anyone who stays to long in Washington is corrupted, in some way shape or form. So to raise feign outrage at someone gaming the system, is hypocrisy of the highest order, both sides of the aisle.
"if Romney were smart, he would use the opportunity to highlight some of the necessary reforms for Medicare and Social Security."
REFORMS?
Oh dear God.
Don't tell me we have a Republican candidate who can't do more than tweak the status quo!
"if he does sink in Florida, should bow out gracefully"
Ain't going to happen. His national polling numbers are still strong. It's going to be a state-by-state dog fight.
Gingrich did not resign "due to continued ethics charges from Dem Congressmen." He was re-elected to his House seat in '98, and resigned from Congress when his Republican colleagues made it absolutely clear that they had no intention of re-electing him Speaker of the House.
Newt was shoved from the right, not the left.
It's not so much that Romney skirted any complicity in the Damon case.
The exposure of Romney as a supreme crony capitalist poised to profit from government health care scares the hell out of me.
Exactly and I'm glad for it too, once they get done denegrating each other the dems will be hard pressed to come up with any new issues and will have to use the race and anti-religion cards and America is waking up to that.
Care to make a gentleman's wager on that one?
Yep, from Rinos just like Karl Rove and Romney.
RINO's are not on the "right" of GIngrich.
Tom Delay attemped a coup , yes the now convicted felon who has been sentenced to 3 years in prison. He supports Romney
And Elliot Abrams,….another felon only out of prison because RINO GHWBush, pardoned him. He supports Romney
Romney headed a company that commited a huge Medicare fraud, and he did nothing to stop it. hen lied over and over. http://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2012/01/21/...
Felons stick together it seems
Nope — from solid conservatives like Tom Coburn and Steve Largent.
Romney lied then about it
The lie and his guilt live on

"…bow out gracefully"?
Newt don't do nothing "gracefully."
He'll be dragged out, kicking and screaming, and blaming his "enemies" for his failure.
The dishonesty of politics is legendary, the surprise for many who know or are of the Latter-day-Saint faith is the degree of dishonesty being accepted by Mitt Romney. The honesty and integrity of Practicing Latter-day-Saints is well known………….that Mitt accepts this behavior has to disappoint many………..I know for one I am disappointed. An oft quoted scripture sums it best………….."if ye love me, keep my commandments."
Do you not know House politics work? The Rinos wanted Newt out and they began gathering the votes to do so. Its called building the majority. I have no doubt that otherwise good guys cast their vote in this manner.
So Newt was shown the door and dropped out, Romney was defeated in 2008 by the head of the Rinos and the voters, that seems far more negative than Newt loosing favor with insider traders and corrupt congressman. Newt should wear that "disgrace" with a badge of honor. Romney couldn't even buy that election in 2008.
According to Fox Business channel-Lou Dobbs, Romney held those stocks in his personal account–the personal accounts that he said he did not have. oopps. The personal accounts where on his tax returns LOL, I guess he forgot or maybe he misfiled them through turbo tax.
In the documentary, they even admit that the company was sold and that the fraud happened under the watch of the company they sold Damon to. Gingrich's Super PAC is really grasping at straws here.
I am beginning to listen, or hear may be a better term. He is too much of a hawk so I tuned him out.
Hear, hear. I too am LDS and I'm extremely disappointed the more I learn about Mitt. What is further disconcerting is to see fellow Latter-day Saints begin to use the same false justifications that Mitt uses for some of his liberal positions. For example, using the principle of agency to be pro-choice (a logic that was debunked by Elder Oaks himself in the 90's). Mitt isn't just hurting the Republican party now, he is setting a terrible example for gullible Latter-day Saints who are accepting his sophistry and moving further to the left.
Conservative House Republicans led the move to oust Newt.
This is a fact.
Nice to know others are questioning the dishonest approach. I feel for those currently in the Mission fields worldwide who are being asked questions concerning integrity on display that is contrary to what the Missionaries are teaching.
You mean as opposed to being a 'dove'…and not preparing to defend ourselves?
Or not being located in areas of the world…that would give us access to immediate response in case of danger?
I am all for closing 'some' bases throughout the world…but there are strategic areas that MUST be maintained for immediate access to the surrounding area.
I believe that we should NOT interfere in the internal wars of any nation! However…there are times when one nation overtakes another and it is necessary to go in and protect those being taken over. And that means having ready means to do so!
Do you know how much it costs and how long it takes to move the military around the world?
So he is NOT a hawk…he is a defender of freedoms…for America…and freedom loving people everywhere!
He has MY vote and the vote of millions who feel the same!
Yeah. Just like Romney is a conservative. I was around back then and nothing Newt did annoyed me. In fact, I recognized that the house democrats hated Newt and tried mightily to destroy him. If any 'conservative' joined with democrats they were spineless conservatives-the kind we neither need nor want.
No I mean trusting the governments information, like WMD, and then marching off to war without congressional approval of declaring war.
I mean nation building wars that require a few trillion dollars more in debt and interest, greatly weakening our future ability to defend ourselves or anyone else.
I mean defense spending that often resembles Solendra on steroids.
I mean the expense of being the worlds policeman, not a constitutional mandate ya know?
WMD info was provided prior to going into Iraq by 'so called' reliable sources…the government needs to get their act together on this one! And to tell you the truth…there was found evidence of WMD…but there was so much lead time given by the UN…for Hussein to move those weapons out to Syria…Iran or another…that who really knows at this point!
Nation building is the mindset of all but "Pot" Paul…and although he has some good ideas…his crazy ones outweigh the good…so no progress there on that front!
Can we cutback on defense spending without cutting back on defense…yes! How about all the revelations throughout the years about $300 wrenches and $600 toilets…etc! Lots of waste in many areas without taking down our defenses!
So all the past Presidents have been guilty of getting involved in these regional wars w/o congressional approval…that it is almost past the point of making it right…but it must be!
So we agree on several…and disagree on others…and I think that the only 'real' conservative…Rick Santorum will do his best to make things right!
The ethics complaints (which were politically motivated and 99% B.S.) and Gingrich losing his Speakership were two separate things.
The Republican caucus rallied 'round Newt on the ethics charges; but it was his questionable leadership, erratic management and abandonment of conservative principles that led to his ouster as Speaker.
But you can tell yourself whatever you want.
Just because all presidents are willing to bend the constitution doesn't mean that I am willing to vote for another one that will do the same. And nation building is what it is, facts don't change due to who is stating them.
Smaller military was also a Rumsfeld tenant, may not be perfect for the hawks but sustainability doesn't seem to be a hawkish priority either.
Both Gingrich and Santorum believe that rape and incest victims should be forced to carry a fetus that results from such violent, criminal acts to term.
No man with such beliefs should ever be elected to any position of power IMO. Thankfully, only the fringe right agree with either of them.

Who knows?
Bennet,
Do you recall that Newt went against GHW Bush? How Sununu went after him for not following Bush and his desire for the tax raise?
You are both correct in that Newt was pushed out by the R's. But, it was the progressives in the party and the left that did so. GHW was no conservative.
Compassionate conservatism my arse!!!
Romney has no political or personal rudder. He is only about "winning" no matter the cost and no matter the good people his actions affect or destroy.
Romney is a soulless human as can be seen by how he has no qualms about engaging in the personal destruction of Callista and Newt Gingrich.
No, it was very similar to Captain Francesco Schettino abandoning the Concordia. No Guts Conservatives are just as dangerous as Liberals.
Regarding the question in the article line: "Will Gingrich Superpacs …draw Romney blood?"
Some. Whether the wound inflicted is superficial or mortal won't be known until more primaries have been done. Newt's campaign was recently infused with two, $5M espresso shots from a wealthy financier. That money translates to new attack ads the Gingrich campaign is running, some of which I've been hearing on the radio.
Romney's albatross is Romneycare. Newt's is his personal life. Paul's is his foreign policy. This is why I believe Santorum has stayed in the race. Even though he's running on empty financially (how empty we'll find out when he finishes doing the taxes at the kitchen table) he sees himself still in the running because he thinks himself a viable alternative to the others. He may be. He did study up for his last debate and came out swinging hard against his two, main rivals but how effective his attack-dog, in-your-face approach will be with voters is an open question.
Radio and TV adverts cost plenty of $$$. Let's see if Newt's patron champions financing his campaign further. The purse is going to determine how far Newt or Rick get. For them, lack of money appears their biggest obstacle.
Romney and Paul are financially sound, and both have very large ground campaigns that are well greased. I still see this race as essentially between them nationally but surprises in politics aren't rare.
BS!
They (Bain) sold the company at the same time they (Damon) were (coincidentally) about to be charged for the crimes committed by the company (Damon).
Perhaps you should watch that video again.
A one time violent rape 'rarely' results in pregnancy! However, when rape occurs repeatedly by a family member and/or relative or neighbor…then it can at times as in the Jesse Dugard case!
So in most cases when it is repeated rape and does happen…most of those pregnancies are carried to term…because those involved choose them to be…so stop with all these scenarios…as if it occurs every time a single rape occurs…it does not!
I agree totally with them…that a child is a creation of GOD no matter how they came to be…and although difficult…why murder the child for the crime against the mother?
They are right in their positions…and I stand with them…NOT you!
This is weak sauce. After Newt's PAC released the 27 minute documentary that was filled with lies and distortions about Bain, their credibility was destroyed. I guess you had to write at least one semi-positive article about this as the Medicare fraud movie is being advertised heavily on Breitbart's sites.
