That Thin Envelope: Time to Resist Racist Education Policy
by Charles C. JohnsonEvery March, college students from around the country receive either a thick or a thin envelope. For many of them, this will be the biggest event in their lifetimes. It will be a source of pride for some; envy and disappointment for others.

As Americans, we’d like to believe our meritocratic sensibilities do a great job allocating talent, but alas, the truth is that at many colleges throughout America race matters more than brains.
Proponents of affirmative action, though, present a false picture when they suggest that they’d be fine with wealthy, white kids being denied admissions in favor of lesser qualified (and often just as wealthy) blacks and Hispanics. In actuality, the people who most often lose their spots at elite colleges in higher education are Asians and Asian-Americans. [The adverse impact of affirmative action against poor whites remains a source of contention and research.]
But what would a world without affirmative action look like? Putting aside your view of whether or not should exist let’s examine how it actually works by examining such a world. In 2005, The Chronicle of Higher Education cited a paper that looked at just that question.
A [2005] study by two Princeton University researchers uses admissions data from elite colleges to portray what would happen in such a world without affirmative action. In short, black and Latino enrollment would tank, while white enrollments would hardly be affected. The big winners would be Asian applicants, who appear to face “disaffirmative action” right now. They would pick up about four out of five spots lost by black and Latino applicants.
. . .
The research looked at admissions decisions at elite colleges and found that without affirmative action, the acceptance rate for African American candidates would be likely to fall by nearly two-thirds, from 33.7 percent to 12.2 percent, while the acceptance rate for Hispanic applicants probably would be cut in half, from 26.8 percent to 12.9 percent.
While white admit rates would stay steady, Asian students would be big winners under such a system. Their admission rate in a race-neutral system would go to 23.4 percent, from 17.6 percent. And their share of a class of admitted students would rise to 31.5 percent, from 23.7 percent.
But what about blacks at selective colleges? Who are they? Again, The Chronicle of Higher Education,
In 2007, a team of researchers published a study in The American Journal of Education finding that while only about 13 percent of black people aged 18 or 19 in the United States are first- or second-generation immigrants, they made up 27 percent of black students at the selective colleges studied.
. . .
A 2008 study found “that among high school graduates, 75.1 percent of immigrant blacks enrolled in college, a slightly higher percentage than that of whites (72.5 percent) and substantially larger than for native blacks (60.2 percent).”
Basically, the black person sitting next to you is likely the child of black immigrants, rather than the descendant of slaves. But why might that be? Well, according to that same article, “Immigrant black students are more likely than other black students to grow up in two-parent families and to attend private schools — both characteristics that, across all sorts of groups, tend to indicate a greater likelihood of attending a selective college.”
Left unanswered, of course, is whether or not affirmative action has actually achieved the results it was intended to achieve. To answer that question, let’s delve into some empirical analysis: Has affirmative action produced more black attorneys? In fact, the answer is that it has produced less, thanks to the mismatch effect. Heather Mac Donald discusses the research of UCLA professor, researcher, and Democrat, Richard Sander who has found the following things.
Almost all black students are admitted to law school with drastically lower college and LSAT grades than those of white and Asian students. After their first year of legal education, 51 percent of blacks are in the bottom tenth of their class; two-thirds are in the bottom fifth. Blacks are four times as likely as whites to fail the bar exam on their first try. Sander has drawn two conclusions from these data, first published in 2004: first, that blacks’ low qualifications entering law school predict their lagging performance in school and on the bar exam; second, that there would be more black lawyers if schools stopped extending preferences to black students—because these students would learn more in schools that matched their capabilities.
“Four times more likely as whites to fail the bar on their first try”? Yikes! No wonder law school deans felt so threatened and paid a visit to the California state bar in the hopes that it would deny Sander his data.
Sander convinced the U.C. system to share its data on incoming undergraduate students and their academic performance. His research confirmed that there were lingering racial preferences at the universities, despite Proposition 209, that outlawed them.
Now you could argue that we need socioeconomic diversity, but why should we have a mismatch there, too? Parents and students could deliberately spend themselves into poverty so as to qualify for admission. With many colleges guaranteeing need blind admission, the net effect would be increased strains on endowments and little to no cost controlling on academic bureaucrats. I suspect that college, even a ride at one of the best colleges, could become seen as a right.
At Harvard Business School, students do just that and pour their money into high-end cars. Why? Financial aid doesn’t assess students’ automotive purchases, only property and savings. Effectively, HBS buys you a BMW. [For those considering HBS, you’re welcome for the tip.]
I have a lot more data, information, and books on race and colleges, but limited space to write more. Conservatives and proponents of the meritocracy would do well to educate themselves on the empirical evidence that continues to make colleges across America the segregationist’s dream come true. In hopes of furthering that education, allow me to suggest a short reading list. I have much more, if you want it.
- The Price of Admission, Daniel Golden, (a WSJ columnist), especially the chapter, “The New Jews,” on Asian-Americans.
- The Chosen: The Hidden History of Admission and Exclusion at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, Jerome Karabel. An interesting point here is that the reason we have admissions interviews was to keep out the Jews, who were called “greasy grinds.” The Dean of Admissions at MIT referred to Asian-Americans as “texture-less grinds.” He prefers students of “soul” to those Asian kids.
- Affirmative Action Around the World: An Empirical Study by Thomas Sowell that should be essential reading for any IR/public policy type.
Do you agree that it’s time to change the law? Let your elected lawmaker know. A proposed ballot initiative to strike down this kind of racism has become stillborn in Utah, despite support.. Americans would do well to take up the cause and finally end a process more fit for the 19th century than the 21st.

Liberal guilt formed AA.
They successfully gave minorities a hand down – for more than a generation.
We now reap and weep what Liberals have sown.
DTOM!

Americans students have been denied in favor of
foreign students also
I have a simple solution for all parties concerned, both the schools, and the students.
Cut the funding.
Cut it 100%
Our country is broke, and we can no longer afford it. Not with a multi trillion dollar Health Care Hoax bill hanging over our heads.
It will immediately take care of affirmative action, and tenured professors. Let them get a job digging ditches.
The problem is it doesn't stop at college. Unqualified people weaken companies who hire them because of quota's. I guess CEO cowards afraid of Sharpton showing up at their headquartes yelling racism is too much pressure.
Toyota anyone.
Affirmative Action is simply Institutionalized Racism. Start calling it what it is.
My department has a Health Disparities center that is advocating the admission of Black and Hispanic students to our graduate program. The federal government pays for these students so no qualified students are denied admission. The penalty of admitting weak students comes in the class room. If we teach to the weak students, those students who came prepared are denied an adequate education and society suffers by not have the best. As careers in science are competitive, all of our graduates are more likely to fail because they can't compete effectively against better educated students. If we teach to the better students, the weak minority students typically fail also depriving society. Furthermore, these minority students were essentially set up to fail and leave academia with self esteem issues and a poor attitude towards using education to improve your standing in society. Not all minority students are academically weak. The minority students with strong qualifications, particularly if they had to struggle because of poverty, poor family life, etc., are excellent students and leave with good recommendations and strong career opportunities. When trying to attract students to my laboratory, I want the best academic qualifications, a strong work ethic, and some one who enjoys science more that race politics.
AA gave us MacDaddy and Michelle. You gota problem wit dat?
You are right. American CEO's cower in the corner, for fear of Jessie and Al.
I always bought American vehicles.
Toyota has impressed me, with their staying power. Their stock should be in the tank, but it is holding steady.
Affirmative Action is the biggest insult to civil rights and minorities possible. It uses the insidious stereotypes that they cannot succeed without some aid from the benevolent liberals, presumes family troubles, money issues, and lack of intellect.
Thomas Sowell's Inside American Education is another wonderful read.
<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=aAq35mBOV_UC&printsec=frontcover&dq=thomas+sowell+inside+american+education&source=bl&ots=GpGfuWIH5C&sig=oIOUGUEGdmYrQeOKGW9djiDwMmE&hl=en&ei=-rufS63hJ8bBrAep8LmmDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CBcQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=white%20freshmen&f=false">Link
Some excerpts:
Funny. Growing up, my dad quizzed me about what I wanted to do as a career. His fall back job was always digging ditches. Now, I grew up in the country and digging ditches isn't a lot of fun so I'm working for that tenured professor job.
To be successful in that goal, I have to convince my fellow scientists that my research ideas and productivity are worthy of tax payer dollars and I have to deliver results. If I am successful, then I have job security since most university will hire funded professors making tenure unnecessary. The security of providing a valuable skill is way better than any rule against being fired unfairly because of politics or being fired fairly because of incompetence.
Well written.
Funny.
That AA went right over my head.
You had me confused, for a minute.
I was thinking of the other AA.
Duh………..
Affirmative Action was on the ballot in Michigan a few years ago. The opposition to it was funded by a group called BAMN. BAMN stands for By Any Means Necessary. It was voted out by a very large margin. All of the inner cities came out to vote for it, and that resulted in Kwame Kilpatrick getting reelected as the Mayor of Detroit, and his mother getting reelected to the House. In spite of the fact that it was voted out, however, every major school decided that they would ignore the ruling. Affirmative action is not going to be easy to change.
I should have said the opposition to getting rid of it was funded by BAMN. The people of Michigan were in favor of getting rid of
Affirmative Action.
Our whole system is so screwed up with the Teachers Unions, AA, Financial Aid…it all needs to be shoved out the door. Our public schools must be made to be competitive or shut down. Charter schools would be a great start giving parents the ability to choose the school for their child based on the parents wants for their kids. If a child is taught the basic skills, critical thinking, Classical Literature, Mathematics, Science and the Arts, they would be able to walk into a University and complete their education successfully no matter what color their skin. Let's face it, there is not a lot of educating going on. They should be teaching children how to learn instead of indoctrinating them to be drones in Obama's coming Brave New World.
We could learn a lot from the educations of generations past. Most people do not realize that today's College education is equivalent to an eighth grade level in the 1800's. We don't expect much from our educators anymore…nuff said!
Affirmative Action should have been overturned 30 years ago! Go into any hospital, funded by the state, or courthouse, or welfare office and you will see 85% of the workers there are black or hispanic…they are arrogant, nasty and extremely self-confidant that they will NOT lose their job no matter how badly they treat anyone! People should be hired on their merit and education NOT the color of their skin!!!
So this explains why we have studies covering such important topics as the STDs of Cockroaches……I get it you thrive on stealing and wasting my money…nice.
I'm very passionate about AA, so here goes nothing:
Achievement and excellence don't have a race; they have an indomitable human will. Punishing excellence or rewarding mediocrity because of race or color is a fucking insult to all involved. Another great read by Thomas Sowell is Inside American Education, I cannot recommend it enough for this topic so one can see how education has been dragged into the intellectual crapper by people more concerned with graduation and attendance rates than actual results.
Sowell calls the K-12 education in inner-cities a "fraudulent education" and then even those who receive a decent education may be mismatched in college due to AA policy. Black kids get jerked around with their education by they very libs who claim that pouring money into schools will cure everything. Thanks to AA admissions, people are now placed in a situation where they are almost guaranteed to fail. These students aren't prospective graduates to some of the elite schools; they're a statistic left out to dry in most cases.
"The problems of mismatching and artificial failure proceed on down the academic pecking order. Nationwide, 74 percent of black students have failed to graduate, five years after entering college." That's a damn shame.
Seniors are having too much of nice car than juniors, but that's beside the point. We all know that AA is NOTHING but discrimination at its worst. It needs to be flushed into history's sewer of rancid, filthy ideologies.
I have said it time and again, the best way to stop discrimination is to STOP DISCRIMINATING!
" 13 percent of black people aged 18 or 19 in the United States are first- or second-generation immigrants, they made up 27 percent of black students at the selective colleges studied."
"Basically, the black person sitting next to you is likely the child of black immigrants, rather than the descendant of slaves."
The second statement is not supported by the data. You are nearly 3 times more likely to be sitting next to an American-born black as you are to be to an immigrant.
I’m tired of this racism against whites and Asians! Racism does not just apply to whites. How can one be “color blind”, when the issue of race is jammed into everything that comes down the pike.
The thing that gets me is that liberals want to keep welfare going to "provide a higher standard of living", but hate vouchers which would lead to a higher standard of education. This is because welfare keeps people in the system, vouchers would allow people to rise out of that system.
Even moreso, how about unions? They actually keep unproductive employees employed at the expense of more qualified applicants. Unions have done more to undermine mertiocracy in this country than even the government has!
Here is an idea, stop whining, and study, if you are not qualified, white, black, latino, purple, green whatever you don't get in. Then you go dig ditches and teach your kids to study so they won't have to dig ditches etc. This is how it used to work before some libtard came along to "fix" it.
God forbid anyone leaves the liberal welfare plantation….
I guess all those LibTard white kids finally figured out that running around wearing baggy pants and listening to gansta rap from speakers with a car under them doesn't get you any more "Obama bucks"! How about that! Pissing off your parents DOES have consequences after all!
Why don't conservatives talk about other non-merit factors in admissions? If you want a real meritocracy, you should also get rid of admission preferences for athletes, children of alumni, rich kids (many schools will accept less qualified applicants who can pay the full tuition), and people from states like North Dakota. It would be one thing for Harvard to just give a test and accept the 1000 highest scorers, but that's not what happens now.
By some estimates, twice as many unqualified whites are admitted to elite colleges as unqualified blacks:
"Peter Schmidt, deputy editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education, writes that researchers with access to the college admissions data that many institutions keep a tight guard on found that 15 percent of freshmen at 146 "highly selective" colleges are white students who didn't meet the school's minimum admissions standards for high school GPAs and SAT or ACT scores. There are more than twice as many sub-par privileged white kids at highly competitive institutions than there are black and Latino students whose race gave them a boost in competing for a spot, the researchers found. Some of the white kids are athletes, and many others are the children or friends of alumni, politicians, faculty members, donors, and administrators."

Sadly, affirmative action will NEVER go away. Deep inside afirmative action freaks is a deep seated hatred of
the white race for all it has contributed to society. Every illegal act commited always ends up being in some way or another the white mans fault as we all have seen over the years. It really sucks when the writting on the wall is so clear yet because of the evil white man a pass is given in order to have an even playing field.
Let's face it, there would be no MARCH MADNESS without AA.
How dare you question your mother government? After all it's done for you, paying your rent, feeding your kids, slaving away…..(sarc)
Our government is a codependent mother, right down to the guilt trip as a weapon. It will never let anyone rise "out of the system" because they'll never call, never write, and might quit agreeing to all these taxes. Nevermind that it's sitting on it's Beltway couch stuffing bon bons while it tries to guilt the sons WITH jobs into supporting the ones that never moved out of the house.
I guess being that we want affirmative action overturned, means we are racists??
AA is nothing more than educational dilution and pollution from re-distributive folly. More'social justice' at work.
Don't worry–these "selective" colleges are called "safetys" for the kids that don't get into the ivys. They are basically white-liberal indoctrination camps where its hip to be for Obama (and partay!)
I would sooner send my child to a decent commuter school so that he/she can work during the day and get the diploma at night.
The only figure relevant to the conclusion referenced is that 27 percent of black college students in the universities studied were first or second generation immigrants. That means approx. 3 "native" black students for every 1 "immigrant" black student (quotes because most all of us are immigrants regardless of method or reason).72.5 percent of 13 percent is a much smaller number than 60.2 percent of 87 percent.
I think Morris has it right. Apologies if I'm geeking out again.
AA is legalized racism. That's all it is. It gives priority to a certain class of people based on their race. In any other form it is illegal and will get you brought to court. It NEVER should have been implemented. Its an insult to ALL races.
Come on! Affirmative Racism gave us the Obamination.
Look how well that is working out.
What is defined at sub-par? Not all secondary schools are equal. Truth be told, I don't go to one of these elite colleges and I am damn glad I do not.
First off, consult the bureaucracy that is the NCAA if you want athletes' admission preferences gone (who do more damage to the athletes by coddling them for 4 years, but I digress), and then consult the boosters who dole out crazy amounts of money for these programs and see what happens. They have standards too and if you screw up, the NCAA hits you hard. Ask the programs who employed Kelvin Sampson.
Why?? They do NOT care what we have to say!
Amazing. I am very opposed to affirmative action and I think that parents of white children have been asleep at the wheel and are not paying attention to the fact that their kids are being denied admission, denied scholarships, denied internships, and denied jobs, all on the basis of their race or, if they aren't asleep, they feel they can't do anything about it. Baloney ! White children are being discriminated against every single day and it is unacceptable. If you spent even a hour looking at the available scholarships you will find most are for blacks, followed by latinos. And Pell grants are the same. Most of the Federal money for higher education goes to Pell Grants and to Historically Black Colleges (just look at the new student loan bill) —– why is this okay? Same goes for internships at corporations. Take a look at the type of money that is spent on scholarships and community groups/programs for just about any corporation and you will find that most of the money goes to programs that benefit mostly blacks and latinos. And white children are denied admission to college based solely on their race and are denied jobs based solely on their race. White children are discriminated against in a major way and, for some reason, people do not say much about it. Well, it's not okay by me and I hope that parents wake up soon and make a stand against this continued, egregious discrimination. It will NOT go away by itself. It will require action of the part of the majority to stop this crap. Please, take a stand and tell your congressman you will no longer stand by as your children are harmed. Make sure you call any government agency or corporation out on their discriminatory policies/programs once you suspect it. File a lawsuit if necessary. Don't let it slide. That's how we got in this mess to begin with.
I dunno, it is confusing now that I look at it. I believe the first stat just refers to selective colleges (vague) but it is two different studies, not the same one.
I'm being a bit of a dork myself, and I actually get what you're saying. That stat is odd, and I think speaks more to the achievement of immigrant blacks compared to natives. The "sitting next to" saying just seems odd since I'd assume there are more native blacks than 1st/2nd generation blacks.
My apologies if I am indeed wrong. Morris gets a +1 for inquiring.
You are so right. This is something else that needs to change.
Absolutely Ralph. They are all interrelated and cannot be dealt with on an individual basis. The whole system is sucking wind…my opinion is liberalism is a thinly disguised form of slavery….especially for folks of color.
Who dosen't want a meritocracy? Answer- Losers
IF we the people…… are all created equal! Why is there even a debate?
"First off, consult the bureaucracy that is the NCAA if you want athletes' admission preferences gone (who do more damage to the athletes by coddling them for 4 years, but I digress), and then consult the boosters who dole out crazy amounts of money for these programs and see what happens."
Even when you count all the alumni donations from athletics, very few athletic programs make money overall when you count the huge costs of running them. Ivy League athletic programs certainly don't.
"Guess what, they're not doing unqualified kids of any race any favors by accepting them. Legacies who do not qualify but are accepted are just as likely to fail out as anyone else accepted on AA."
At most elite colleges, there is so much grade inflation that people don't fail out, they just take easy classes and get degrees in philosophy, sociology, etc. Most unqualified individuals are probably better off with a philosophy degree from an Ivy league with a B average than they would have been with a state school degree – Wall Street is full of ex-jocks and frat boys from Ivy league schools – but the Ivy league school could have admitted other people in that spot who would take far greater advantage of the opportunity.
"So if a kid has a 3.49 GPA for a school that has a median 3.5 but has SAT scores 70 points higher than the 75th percentile he is considered unqualified in that context of the article and vice versa. Do you know an absolute floor for GPA and SATs at these competitive schools?"
The article said it was the schools' minimum admissions standards. So if the minimum for the general applicant pool is a 3.3 GPA and 95th percentile SATs, it's anyone who doesn't meet that. It doesn't compare them to the median, which would be misleading – someone could be 10 SAT points under the median but have a 4.0 GPA and stellar extracurricular activities.
Nope. I'm more interesting in learning the mechanism whereby inflammation increases the risk of Americans to get diseases such as Cancer and Alzheimer's.
Do you want to get rid of stupid "scientific" studies? Oppose earmarks. You know, the legislative language Representatives and Senators insert into the appropriations bills for scientific research that force the NIH and NSF to fund crap science instead of the science, basic and translational, that will continue to make US science and health care the best in the world. Most scientists have a vested interest in funding good science that will help keep the US competitive because we have to justify our research to the tax payers. The best scientists I've met hate having their grants rejected for lack of funding to turn around and see money wasted on "STDs of Cockroaches".
Iceman! Your kids will wash out PDQ, ivy or not, if they are "idiots." It's really not doing them any favors to "get" them into a position that they haven't earned.

I agree Cowboy.
With an annual household income of ~ $55k (used to be much lower in the past), my wife and I raised two kids. We home-schooled for a while, then sent our children to private schools that cost us over $500/month. We have also been able to save a substantial amount in investments and are now in the second year of our eldest’s college (costing about $12-15k per year). Next year our youngest starts college. The answer is simple; you spend your money on what is important to you (in our case our children’s futures). We have never had cable television, video game systems, or any other frivolous things. We probably go out to eat about 4 times per year and go to the theater with equal frequency.
I get sooo tired of hearing people complain about how the government should provide for them. To these people I say, “Provide for yourself people; if you choose to provide entertainment to yourself (while making the clowns that entertain you rich) then don’t expect me and the rest of the tax-payers to provide for your children’s future.” I refuse to be supported by others!
Just wondering, what is the percentage of blacks and all races in America? If America is made up of 12% blacks wouldn't if be fair if our colleges were made up of 12% blacks as well? If not, wouldn't they be over represented?

"The article said it was the schools' minimum admissions standards."
No. No, it did not. At all. It never says anything remotely close to the way you just phrased it, and I quote:
took the academic profiles of students admitted into 146 colleges in the top two tiers of Barron's college guide and matched them up against the institutions' advertised requirements in terms of high school grade point average, SAT or ACT scores, letters of recommendation, and records of involvement in extracurricular activities.
I own a Barron's guide and it clearly states the SAT scores and GPA by the median of the accepted class, so it changes every year, arguably giving even inflated numbers and way too much credit to some schools. You're also making up your own minimum, seeing as the 95th percentile is such an arbitrary number and hardly ever published since all schools do some extent of AA and would be embarrassed if those low numbers got out. Even then, there's still the lowest 5 percentile that could get accepted because there is no absolute floor on college campuses. Still doing them a disservice though. If they have the numbers (I'd presume it is for their eyes only) they should be helping students who were accepted preferentially who obviously cannot hack it.
"Wall Street is full of ex-jocks and frat boys from Ivy league schools"
Thanks for your opinion… I'm pretty sure if you can't hack it, you get weeded out of WS pretty damn quickly.
Well, most of those selective schools are run by liberals anyway, so to bash conservatives for actually wanting a true merit-based standard seems a little sheepish on your part. Most of the blame, I believe, lies on the professors who give out fraudulent grades under pressure from the university.
Sure can see why you grouped all these things together there Lorben,……
Doesn't it seem that, especially with is this Obamacare bill, all things liberal are best dealt with by,….going back and,……..
"Starting from scratch"
You're on the right track, but miss the mark by just a little. Collectivist/fascist/socialist/communist Lefties succeeded in co-opting Liberals (real ones) and exploited them for their over-reliance on emotion. They were duped, and never figured it out. As a result, a great word and concept has been reduced to a label and a means of whipping Lefties.
Never lose sight of the leadership of any movement, and always ask yourself to what extremes they are willing to go to to achieve their ends. It's not, nor has it ever been, a conspiracy – just hardly ever honestly reported on (until now). They found a flock of sheep and rounded them up, much to our detriment. This is one result.
AA is a disgusting stain on the American record and can't end soon enough. People who want "proper" "group" representation never consider, or don't care, about the impact on the unique, individual life that is punished as a result of this type of policy. Per this article, how many "Asians" have had their quality of life and potential for future happiness squashed or reduced in the service of some sick political ideology?
Many studies reveal the relative value placed on hard work and education among differing ethnic and racial "groups". It totally diminishes the individual. I had a client last year who is "black" and is very successful as a corporate V.P. at a major bank. He made "Top 40 under 40" and EARNS $300k +. Nobody handed it to him, and I wonder how many people think someone did. Diminishes his individual achievement a bit, eh? I also know several highly successful "Hispanic" businessmen. Same story. Also have met many losers of all shapes, sizes and colors (and creeds).
End this crap! Teach children the truth and promise this country was founded on. Elevate MERIT to it's rightful place in society, and in the consciousness of every American, especially the children!
Keep up the fight RWS, we will win…
More and more white students who are trying to get a good education at low cost are getting into traditionally black schools by affirmative action. Not a bad idea. Get a free ride for being white…..unheard of isn't it?
"whites" are expected to be the minority in the country by 2050. That should be an interesting turn of events ey?
AA exists because of black hatred and liberal guilt — that's all there is to it. It had a purpose, for a brief window of time, and has since long outlived that purpose; yet, it malingers, because it feeds the very worst elements of human nature — the childish belief that someone is owed something else, specifically that "whitey" owes me for injustices I've suffered, real, or perceived. Either the virulent racism in many black communities needs to die (unlikely) or liberal whites need to stop feeling guilty and/or love blacks enough to let them succeed on their own merits (also unlikely). AA will continue until there's no American money left to spend and liberals are borrowing money from the Chinese and blacks will be licking their boots. The fact that this is just a new kind of slavery will escape them both.
I agree with the article that AA needs to be done away with, but I was saddened by the fact that the author stated as his primary opposition to AA the fact that it discriminates against Asians. Why are whites so afraid to assert their own self-interests? Whites have become so brow-beaten by political correctness that they now have to advocate for minorities when taking any political position.
Instead of saying that the welfare state is wrong because it is corrupt and wastes money, conservatives argue that it harms minorities by making them dependent.
Instead of arguing that illegal immigration is wrong because it leads to increased crime and strains our social services, conservatives argue that it is wrong because it hurts unskilled black workers.
Instead of opposing abortion because it is morally wrong, conservatives argue that abortion is wrong because it is an option disproportionately used by minority women.
Instead of saying that ACORN is bad because they are a corrupt group that engages in voter fraud, conservatives on this site make ridiculous comparisons to ACORN and the Klan.
Do you see what I mean? What is so hard about saying that, as a white person, I think AA is wrong because it unfairly discriminates against my white children who have never done anything wrong and who have worked hard their entire lives? Give me a break with this PC nonsense already.
With regard to the Affirmative Action issue, I'm reminded of an old, Hill Street Blues episode in which the captain announces that, due to a lawsuit filed by Jesse Jackson's group "Push," each precinct had to have officers on board who reflected the ethnic makeup of the community served. Accordingly, they were going to have to fire 7 black officers and 2 black detectives, 5 hispanic officers and 1 hispanic detective and hire 14 white officers and 3 white detectives!
The worst of both worlds – a perfect storm of stupidity: ObamaCare and doctors who owe their educations to Affirmative Action.
Don't they realize that under that combination, tort reform is an absolute must? The rapid rise in malpractice suits will drive our entire medical industry off a cliff.
Can't wait for my next colonoscopy. I hope my affirmative action doctor knows into which end the "probe" goes. That won't happen to me since most of our current docs are fairly competent. Give this bunch a generation, and I truly fear for the quality of my children's and grandchildren's medical care.
I wish there were more colleges across the country like Grove City & hillsday they take NO money from the goverment at all and really teach a true education at great tuition rates and kids love the school they have dicipline, respect and learning.with real professors nor politcally correct BS professors who are over paid for spreding their bullshit agendas instead of teaching materical.indoctrination is not teaching.I would donate money to schools like the above to spread across the country they are outstanding institutions who turn out outstanding graduates.
