The Truth About Obama and Nuclear Power
by Christopher C. HornerWe have established that Obama’s war on coal assumed a massive, crash program of 100 new nuclear reactors — for optics purposes, keeping the cost of killing coal down, on paper — without which power the lights will necessarily go out. You cannot rule out half of our electricity supply and pretend otherwise.
Now that that binge is an even more obvious fiction, his defenders charge forth to say he does too support nuclear.
And they point to this recent statement. “Nuclear energy is an important part of our own energy future.”
Which does not say he will promote any new reactors, of course. Just that he knows he can’t shut down the existing fleet, additions to which have been stalled since 1978. Meanwhile he plans to add no coal, and shut down the existing coal fleet. Electricity, after all, comes from those holes in the wall.
Obama also said to Iowa voters in October 2008 that he was “not a proponent” of nukes, and it is unlikely that anything has changed his core position.
And in response to which rhetoric I also note that on Friday he said this: “First, we need to continue to boost domestic production of oil and gas.”
Ah. Yes. Of course we must. Please point to his record of trying to boost production again?
Was it revoking 77 leases on 130,000 hydrocarbon-rich acres ab initio — which his Interior Secretary called just the beginning — sealing off more land for exploration and production, taking advantage of the Gulf Spill to shut down meaningful E&P there (and lying to aid the political objective), or maybe halting recent progress that brought a revival in Alaskan production close to happening?
Closing off wherever oil is likely to be is not aimed at boosting production, no matter what ideological bubble one inhabits. Thanks to Obama’s actions our domestic output numbers already began to drop in 2011 and are projected to fall off the cliff next year.
So, now we have also established that he will say anything, regardless of the reality. To conclude that, unless he expressly states I will not actually pursue what my economic analyses assumed I would — inviting legal and political challenges he has no need to invite — is to ignore reality as much as he hopes all of us will.
But enough words. How about actions?
Was it his NRC reversing course on recertifying Vermont Yankee this week? Just a ‘pause’, right? Like the pause nukes have been in for three decades?
Here is the reality about Obama and nuclear power, affirming that he is charting a disastrous path. Citations are omitted, but all of this is found in Power Grab.
Obama’s supposed pro-nuclear stance is occasional and purely rhetorical, with the sole exception a promised loan guarantee for two nuclear projects…. representing one-fiftieth of the nuclear capacity that Obama’s own economic assessments include in order to produce their phony “cap-and-trade” numbers;
Once elected, Obama cancelled a loan guarantee for a second U.S. plant to produce uranium fuel for nuclear reactors even though, as a presidential candidate, he said during a nearby campaign stop that he supported that same loan guarantee;
His support for nuclear power is contingent upon finding an “acceptable” place for and manner of storing spent fuel, or finally recycling it. Such slippery subjectivity (“sure, so long as it’s ‘safe’ and ‘acceptable’”) is the way his team have masked what is, in truth, an unyielding opposition to most energy projects and sources;
Sure enough, Obama canceled the high-level nuclear waste repository that had been decades and $13 billion in taxpayer funding in the making. After all, two senior administration officials blustered that we actually have no need for any more nuclear power (or coal) because that production can be replaced by putting some windmills off the East Coast.
These are actions. And the truth is that President Obama is waging an aggressive war on coal, and even stepping it up against gas, demanding a vast new reactor fleet begin construction yesterday. His economic assumptions of 100 new nuclear reactors was insincere and facially absurd and is now utterly implausible as a practical matter.
All of which says he must place his war on coal and gas on hold. He is not doing so, but doubling down on the anti-coal demagoguery even this past week.
He is a committed anti-energy ideologue, because energy liberates you. Just as George Will wrote about automobility, abundant energy is “subversive of the deference on which progressivism depends [and...] encourages people in delusions of adequacy, which make them resistant to government by experts who know what choices people should make.”
Abundant reliable energy runs counter to Obama’s ideology. He is not a proponent of nuclear power, and when he admitted that he was telling the truth. And notwithstanding a few words aimed at avoiding questions about how we keep the lights on, given his war on coal-fired electricity, nothing he has done reveals that he will promote increased nuclear power to replace coal and then gas.
Tell the truth. Have a responsible conversation about our energy needs, the costs and benefits associated with energy sources, and how we best move forward. So far, all of that is lacking out of the White House. It is now up to Capitol Hill.

BO can talk the talk, but he can't walk the walk. He has never had to do so. Someone else has always done the heavy lifting for him so he could keep his hands clean to avoid any backlash.

"BO ……………can't walk the walk."
No, but he can dance this dance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kgq1g-2cQ54
truth and Obama are complete strangers
All Barry Bop needs to know is that when he walks into a room someone turns on the light for him.
In his case….his understanding of what America needs…
Lights on…Nobody home.
He can't dance either. He's just going there to check on soros investments in "deep water" drilling and his 2 billion dollar loan to their oil drilling exploration.
We won't get more than a few new nukes in the next decade-if any. Companies are just not willing to make the investments, both financial and political. A Fortune 500 company was planning on a new plant or 2 for years. And just months ago, they scrapped the whole thing. I am a strong proponent of nuclear power. But it isn't the only option. We should be using the "all of the above" strategy. This is America people, we can become a great nation again. And without a strong electrical grid and plentiful source of our own oil & gas, we are limiting ourselves.
Tell the truth.
That's asking quite a bit from any politician.
This guy is an assbag, a political lightweight waaay in over his head on dealing with the issues of the nation. Why should his dealing with the energy policies be any different?
As the "prophet" Joe Wilson once said…. YOU LIE!!!
and LIE!
and LIE!
; )
NONE of us KNOW the real TRUTH about Obama! We can guess and opine…but, the TRUTH is elusive!
Mum is the word up on Capital Hill too.
He just said he acted quickly on Libya. This man lies more than any person I have witnessed in my entire life.
He talks about Gadaffis intentions being clear because he himself made them. Hey Obama, Bin Laden did that too!
Yeah, he wants the Libyan regime "held accountable". I want YOUR regime held accountable, Obama!
He is telling Gadaffi what to do and what not to do. Sounds kinda like what W did with Saddam, huh?
Obama is issuing 2 days notice right now (think war powers act). He can frame it "international" all he wants. More lies, he really is incapable of just being truthful. I think he knows Gadaffi is close to using chemical weapons against his own people.
He blames Gadaffi, just like W did Saddam. This has got to be driving the left absolutely CRAZY!
"One more chapter of change" he said. Oh how delicious.
"Change cannot be imposed" he said. Oh Really? Can you say Obamacare? LMAO.
Ask the military to use force? What a moron, he is the Commander in Chief – he is not supposed to ask, he is supposed to TELL! No wonder he wants to get rid of "don't ask, don't tell".
Joe Wilson was right.
I'll tell you the truth about Obama and nukes. I'm from the left, I know Obama's type very well. The right is over thinking the issue.
With the type of modern liberal Obama is, politics is not a means to an end. It is the end. This type doesn't care in the least what position they take, as long as it gets them the most votes.
If polls say nukes are unpopular today, he's against them. If polls say they are popular tomorrow, he's for them.
The only difference between Obama and Bill Clinton is the MSM likes Obama better. He gives better footage than Clinton, who every one knew was a cad.
That's why I trust my dog more than my congressman.
Really? Clinton was Obamas caddy?

Well here's some pleasant news. Hopefully we'll see more of this in the near future.

Obama told us during the campaign that under his plan "energy costs would necessarily skyrocket". Pity that more of us didn't take him at his word. He is going to use the nuclear crisis in Japan to justify further dithering on nuclear power here, and continue to stonewall on oil drilling/exploration permits, and I heard the other day he's yanking mining permits from several coal operators in WV. Hope you have lots of batteries and a back-up generator boys and girls. It going to get dark and cold at night without them.
That George Will is so damn smart! Not that you don't hold up your end too, Chris. This faker, lying, communist bullslinger will go down in history as one of the low points of our society. You did hear that Petrobras just got permission for a rig in the Gulf right? Where American companies need a court order, a Brazilian company flush with Soros and US government cash waltzes right in with no problem. I guess that's why The Zero is off to Brazil this weekend, to visit his stash. There are no coincidences with this clown!
Hmmm——So rhetoric is just rhetoric?? Should we REALLY expect ACTION???
Now that is encouraging news John! Nothing like a civil suit to bring them down and this sounds like it could be worth a lot to the plaintiff. Criminal suits are nothing to these guys, money is all they understand!
"Delicious" ROTFL! Great comment, Ash!
The truth about Obama………………………..He's an idiot!
O-Whats-His- Name is the Sales Manager for GE and Westinghouse (NBC and CBS). Whatever, pushes their interests is his position. Lets not forget, (Hollywierd and High Tech)
To all those who would respond to the recent nuclear crisis in Japan by killing all present and future nuclear operations:
If any of you have ever suffered from headache, I have a solution.
Obtain access to a guillotine. Then "Look through the little window and be cured of headaches forever!"
Since the Man Made Global Warming crowd is making it impossible to get our energy from coal and oil, any you're ready to kill nuclear power, then we're left with wind and solar.
Since we get about 1.8% of our current energy needs from renewables, the only answer will be rationing. When your power is only on for a half an hour a day, enjoy shivering in the dark!
Welcome Brucester. Good comment. It's the point that most people can't figure out. So many say that don't want nukes or coal in their back yard. But what is the alternative? People freak out when there is even a momentary power loss. There would be much wailing & gnashing of teeth if they turned off everything but wind, solar and hydro.
And you can't just run to the Nuke Depot store to buy a new plant. It takes years from license approval to actually put power on the grid.
Petroleum & Electrons-you either want them or you don't.

"Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company." George Washington
I just don't understand – he lies to the people of America and no one will call him on it. And the people that voted for him just don't care what he says. I am truely amazed.
you are right about his comment "energy costs would necessarily skyrocket" – maybe the people that voted for him thought he said 'energy costs wouldn't necessarily skyrocket.' What other reason could there be for people to ignore his statements?
Dear wm,
Must respectfully disagree: Pres. Obama knows exactly what he is doing, as Mr. Horner writes in this article. Reducing the availability of energy and increasing the price suits his ' Progressive ' agenda.
Sincerely,
John Lepant Brighton CO
Whoa…..Hold the phones…………….you mean there is some "Truth About Obama' out there?
Oh yeah I forgot he did pick out a dog! My bad.
No offense but I have to disagree. The liberal agenda is based on lies and corruption making it idiotic to those that understand the non-revisionist history of our nation and an ounce of common sense. So, in my opinion, Obama is an idiot for following it.
øbama can say anything he wants – he knows the EPA and a galaxy of regulations will prevent any action. Win/win. A lie is as good as the truth if somebody believes it, right?
Truth – he's a lousy golfer pretending to be pResident.
So when natural gas and electricity get too expensive to use for heating our homes, what's going to happen? My guess would be a LOT of firewood being used. That will make the air so much cleaner. Do these enviro-dip$hit$ EVER think things through? They will probably outlaw fire.
The best part about the President's war on coal is, the coalminers union in Ky endorsed him. Only a union could be so stupid. I guess maybe they can re-organize as a welfare recipient's union. Who do you negotiate with to raise your welfare payments?I'm sure the union bigwigs will walk away smelling like roses.
