Japan Fallout Here: The Folly of Obama’s Pushin’ O’ the Green
by Christopher C. HornerAlthough usual suspects are now saying that the chain of events leading to Japan’s nuclear crisis is simply proof that we need to now rule out the last energy source that works, in terms of providing the necessary, base-load power required to run a modern society, it actually proves the opposite. With nuclear for all intents and purposes frozen in amber — as if it wasn’t already, talk of a ‘renaissance’ notwithstanding — this, combined with the Left’s war on energy that works now places us on the precipice, as well.
Will Obama admit that he must immediately cease his war to kill coal, which is a stepping stone on their war to also strangle gas? (all of which was detailed here, ten months, early, I suppose)
Of course not. Will someone, possibly an aspiring president, call him out on it?
After all: his war on coal assumed an unprecedented binge of 100 new nuclear ractors here.
That was facially absurd at the time — “at this rate”, as the greens like to say, we’ll add 100 new reactors as the new millenium approaches — but it is inescapably reckless now. They must be forced to cop to it. And do the responsible thing.
That’s not exactly how things are playing out. Congress is moving to stop Obama’s EPA from the centerpiece of its ‘energy plan’, which is to regulate its war on coal-fired electricity that they were unable to legislate. And the administration reflexively joined the demagoguery of that responsible move, the necessity of which has now only proved more obvious.
But that EPA backdoor global warming scheme is, just like the failed cap-and-trade legislation, premised on a fantasy economic assumption (100 new reactors) to dumb-down the cost of regulating coal out of existence (‘bankrupting’ anyone who wanted to try and use it, in Obama’s own phrase to the SF Chronicle ed board). In fact, this was built in purely to have a piece of paper to wave around and say see this is completely different than the plan that candidate Obama said would cause your rates to necessarily skyrocket, and bankrupt anyone daring to use coal! Not honest.
Oh, sure, new nuke reactors have been on ‘pause’ for decades thanks to the same people waging this war on coal. But you’re greedy, they say. If they create energy poverty by increasing the scarcity of that which works, you’ll invent Pixie Dust or Flubber. Which, if it worked, would immediately become their next ‘greatest threat’. We know this. Because for decades the greens have said Pixie Dust or Flubber would be ‘like giving an idiot child a machine gun’, to quote one sage.
But this all shows how the Japanese circumstance — which cannot help, in practical terms, serve as the latest reason to not build nuclear here — means we must stop their plan to ensure no new coal is built, either. You cannot, as an adult in a position of responsibility, take a position that nuclear is too scary, coal will never be acceptable, and you’ll rule on natural gas later. Sometime after imposing the energy-scarcity agenda, assuring Americans that we’ll just rely on electricity, instead.
That fantasy game of rigging a game by risible economic assumption is exposed, by the new de facto freeze on nukes, in all of its recklessness. Yet unless forced to come clean, the administration will not let reality intrude on their dogma any more than they did when his ‘green economy’ models like Spain proved to be basket cases. They simply stopped telling us to look at the supposed success stories, while charging full-steam ahead to force us onto politically selected but failed energy sources.
If allowed to continue this blindness to realities in an ideological pursuit, Obama risks spectacular human, economic and national security consequences. This will be disastrous. And it could be avoided if someone on the Hill or preparing a presidential run would demand candor, and an open, honest public debate. What has been invented, that you are not waging war on, that will keep the lights on?
If the Obama administration so much as flinches on nuclear — and indeed his NRC has already frozen the recertification of Vermont Yankee — it is his duty to immediately call off EPA’s ‘global warming’ war on coal. In fact, in the face of what we already see, that is the only responsible thing to do. In a twist on the old saying, will the last adult in the Obama administration please stop them from turning out the lights?

and in other news, the Barack Obama school in New Jersey is closing.
MMMMM, MMMM, MMMMMM
Scientific America just released a story about how radioactive coal ash is. Fission nuclear is the safest, cleanest energy source we have until we finally start putting money into fusion. I would love to see all the Obama's BS green money and tax breaks be spent on making fusion viable.
Barry Soetoro…((( PRESENT, golf, NCAA brackets, Rio, etc )))….a wasted four years!!!!
Perhaps, just maybe, we're focused on the wrong thing.
I guess I don't really care so much about the strangle hold the environmentalist friendly democrats are placing on coal and petro. What I care about is who is going to profit and how. Just for second think about it — how does Obama profit from this activity? Exportation of industry to other countries to which Obama or his supporters has a capital stake? Increase in marginal profits created by domestic mineral rights?
I don't know about the former as much as the latter — how do you think the Kennedy's make all their money? Check it out.
DUDE!! You can't just post here about some juicy fruit filled doughnut without sharing the link so we can all enjoy it.
REALLY! I'm calling blog foul!
OK….

Sorry about that….
There are no economical or scientifically viable alternatives to coal, oil, NG and nuclear power today. Ethanol is a joke, wind power cannot provide enough and reliable power, neither will solar or gerbils running on wheels. We need an all of the above approach to energy production in this country and if there is a "next big thing" out there it will be found and perfected eventually. Until then, strangling the economy by limiting energy availability is not only irresponsible, IMO it is criminal.
Stop throwing sh$t around, Horner. Obama isn't jumping all over Nukes, yet. Have you ever heard of a guy named Steven Chu? While it may be Kerry, Lieberman and Markey's plan to "put the brakes on", Obama's spokesman, since the Japan explosions has reiterated "Nuclear remains a part of the president’s overall energy plan".
How much more have you missed, beyond your general whining about oil, as you are paid to do.
If your price on carbon is above absolute zero, which believe it or not for many it is, coal is your FIRST target. While people like this guy go around supporting false ideas like "clean coal", that we all end up paying for and do nothing, the EPA is actually doing it the way that works. SHUT 'EM DOWN.
I'm sure Van Jones will have all the answers and resources in "short order". Gotta run …
Need to buy more propane and charcoal while I can still afford it.
Oil is already a business that, with or without Anwar drilling, is largely foreign. And it will remain that way. Obama types make money writing books and memoirs. Cheney and the Bush clan were the ones who made money the oil way. Were their interests in US energy policy genuine?
Thank you!
You obviously missed the header announcements Chris. The EPA is going ahead with their plan to eliminate mercury from coal fired plants. Of course, this will not apply to Duke Energy coal plants 'cause the Dims want a loan of $10M for their 2012 convention from them. That's in addition to all the exemptions Duke have now. Isn't it wonderful to be a Zero supporter?
I don't know. Gerbils running on wheels sounds like a viable option.
Why if we just used all the vermin running around Washington, we could probably run a small city. We could call it "democRAT power."
That may actually be the only useful thing some of them have ever done.
You know, if The Zero ploughed even half of the money set aside for "green" energy into a small scale, like room sized, fusion reactor they could make it work. Once that is done private money would flow like heavy water to have fusion reactors all over this country. Will it be done? Bah! Only because the word nuclear is part of it. Screw it drill and dig here and now!
Obama's budget has 67mm in it to explore modular nuclear reactors of 200-300MW. Ones that would've been perfect to replace the 200 of 600 coal plants that are beyond 50 years old.
Horner doesn't care about the truth. Carbon has game-changed support of nuclear. Green Piece is on board, for Christ's sake. Why don't we have an intelligent, "intense", discussion, instead of the pig-headed ones fashioned by Breitbart's authors.
All Horner stands to succeed in doing is firmly returning nuclear to the Republican camp, as Huffpo's doing with anti-nukes. We, the people, don't need this crap. Polls show opinions haven't changed much after japan, but thanks to our media it will go back to being a political issue. WE supported a good solution and, unless a vessel ruptures, that is how it should stay.
Killing BAB's was bad enough for the industry.
Obama seeks to turn the USA into Sub-Saharan Africa.
thanks…that just made my day and I'm having a bad one….
What is the overall energy plan?
He has no plan, the man is a serial liar.
I don't care what he says, show me the proof.
Go ahead, we are all waiting.
"Obama's budget has 67mm in it to explore modular nuclear reactors of 200-300MW."
Where is it in the Constitution that the government has the power to develop nuke reactor designs?
This is a government that is not competent to install weatherstripping in peoples homes, and you think they are going to build reactors?
Do you say these things with a straight face?
There was a subtle joke in that statement. That being, "once they've cut off all means to PRODUCE electricity, then they'll come out and say 'we’ll just rely on electricity, instead.'"
I thought the humor might be a little TOO subtle. That's why I deleted the comment.
If we could just burn orated Bovine Fecal Matter. The piles in Wash D.C. alone would provide America's energy demands through the next millennium!
The best part about the President's war on coal is, the miners union in Ky endorsed him. I guess maybe they can re-organize as a welfare recipient's union. Who do you negotiate with to raise your welfare payments?
Oil doesnt have to remain foreign, as we still have plenty in the gulf, east/west coast, shale and other sources within the contential US that we just are not tapping. We could as well add Anwar to on top of it.
Actually, Obama has money ties with BP and so do other Dems with other companies. Its not limited to one side.
From what I can tell, neither side really has interests in US energy policy until someone has an actually policy to use our own resources instead of importing from unstable regions.
First, Obama wants re-election, if you want to predict things.
For energy, look at Steven Chu. The guy is a God in china, as an academic who knows energy. If Obama listened to Carol Browner, who is now gone, we'd have had more agressive "clean air" regs by now. Coal litereally bought a pass on 85% of its emissions in the Congressional carbon Bill. Obama didn't even fight that.
More nuclear, Less oil, and eventually less coal, are the apparent plan. The alternative is the free market choke on the economy through oil, oil and more oil. Republicans won't assist nuclear, like Obama is doing.
Please name one government program that has or is functioning correctly without graft, waste or corruption?…………..Waiting………….Yep, just as I thought………Not a single program unless one considers failure to be a success.
The congress can't even cut enough runaway spending to curb the bankruptcy facing the country, and someone wants to put nuclear development and implementation into their corrupt reach let alone their dirty, money grubbing hands. God help us. The insane are in charge of the asylum.
Sure do. If fusion were to be spawned by the US investing the 67mm at some university we don't know of, yet, it would be worth it to me. Modular designs are more likely to see the light of day.
All you are suggesting is that you are a Libertarian who could do without the FDA, the SEC, or what else, public roads? Where are they in the Constitution?
mucho grassy ass
It's too bad we can't do that to the obama admin just as easily. We have to wait until 2012.
Better Harry if you examine that sentence provided by Cog The All Knowing. EXPLORE modular nuclear reactors. The only folks doing this in the US is GE. Ding Ding that's right, you win the big prize. GE is going to take money for something they already have. The real question is, will they be allowed to install them anywhere? Not on your life. The environazis, The Zero's own troops, will stop that madness. If not, the EPA surely will. Supporting nukes is nothing more than happy talk from The Zero to keep us hoping he has the answer while he dismantles coal then ZIP he pulls the rug out and says it's an emergency. We gotta' built more windmills now! It's the progressive way, lie. And when it doesn't come out they way they think it will, which is never, lie and blame it on someone else.
Makes you wonder how stupid Kentucky miners really are, doesn't it?
Modular nuclear reactors, you mean like the ones they already have in ships? It's a ploy Cog and you are being led by the nose.
Obama profits as the economic pressures on the world economy grow. Collapse is the goal and this horrendous tragedy is an unforeseen boon to the Progressives idea of global governance. If only they don't let this crisis go to waste…
good point… You won't see me making defenses for Haliburton. Even in the best possible case – Cheney hired someone he knew and someone he knew could get the job done but someone he was at some point in his life he was connected to. Totally agree — it just doesn't look good.
However, no matter how bad the whole Haliburton thing looked or was, it is no where nearly as bad as what we have now. In fact, even if the whole Haliburton thing was the pinnacle example of corruption prior to 2008 (which it wasn't even close) I would still rather than then what we have here.
Obama gives billions of U.S. dollars to Petrobras (yes GIVE in the form of a grant) to finance deep sea exploration between the time frame of when George Soros invested heavily in Petrobras and when the oil leak took place in the golf. Then as if securing George's invest in Petrobras with tax payor money wasn't good enough, Obama directs Ken Salazar to halt oil production in the golf — where by some of these oil rigs had to left anchor and sail to the only market available —- Brazil —- at fire sale prices.
Just because the main stream media carries water for the democrats and publicly assassinate anyone who isn't a democrat, don't be fooled that this piece-o-chit-in-chief is any cleaner that Lewinsky's blue dress.
I got it…. it worked for me
You may be right, but its more than will come from other directions. The COL (construction and operating license) that the two new Georgia reactors were expecting from the Administration this fall will be a BIG test of Obama's nuclear will. If that doesn't happen, you will have your evidence we're being led by the nose.
Japan could sadly be an all too conveinient an excuse not to grant them. Its unbelievable this country could go so many decades without a new plant and then this could happen months before the groundbreaking. Tragic for more than just Japan.
I hope Chu keeps it rational.
As the founders believed there is a need for government, but limited in its power.
Designing nuclear power plants is not an authorized power by any stretch of the imagination.
And we note that you ignore my second point, which is undeniable.
Government is incompetent and inefficient at whatever it does.
There is a market for cheap environmentally friendly energy, if you can create it you will be rich. Assuming that it hasn't yet been developed because the government hasn't funded the research yet is foolishness. No amount of government spending will produce magic.
Government is not the solution, government is the problem.
/crickets
Agreed. We have a wonderful example that Fusion works burning in the sky every day. Now if we could only contain and control that power. :p
The MSM has been carrying water to both sides of America's lowest common denominator more recently than in my living memory.
If your alleged ties between Obama, Soros and Petrobas are part of a Glen Beck episode, you can save your breath.
"I'll take a nuclear intertwined President over an oil one, at this point"
At least there is some semblance of competition in the oil industry. When monopolies (in this instance GE) and government get into bed, the end result is rarely beneficial to the consumer or the taxpayer.
You forget that electricity is a regulated business. Investor owned utilities, like Duke, must show their books to the states in which they operate. They can only price about 10% beyond their cost of delivery.
Consumers submit to the centralized bargaining power of suppliers in oil/gas, where regional utilities have a much harder time hiding revenue and upping margins. In short, the electric consumer gets a better deal. How, is a political discussion.
We could put magnets in the coffins of the founding fathers, wrap copper wire around them and generate huge amounts of electricity from the founding fathers spinning in their graves.
Chu? You mean "paint your roof and the roads white" Chu? Rational? And as far as waiting for the speech noted above, Jeezus man, have you not learned a thing? Speeches mean nothing to this clown. It's his actions that have shown he's nothing but a socialist, perhaps a full blown communist, who will do his best to beggar this country. I, like you, am a nuclear proponent. But, nuclear does not power our cars and transportation of goods, the lifeblood of this country, nor will the electricity provided by reactors make a difference in the decades required to approve and build them. Despite any decree by Zero you know damn well every single step in the construction will be taken to court by the environazis (and they use our money to bring these cases if you didn't know) so, 20 years minimum is what you're looking at. No, drill here and now. Get our own oil and stop sending money to the sand jockeys, keep it in our pockets.
So you think it's okay for The Zero to be in bed with Immelt but, it's bad that Cheney has a company involved with oil? What is wrong with you?
Wait, wait Oldman, I'm still thinking………….nope, can't think of one.
it's because of the "fallout"…………….it'll be uninhabitable for at least 20,000 years.
Dear CW,
#1: China doesn't care about Sec. Chu,
#2: Chu wants solar -it was his research field prior to becoming Energy Sec.,
#3: Pres. Obama shut down Yucca Mtn. Without a waste repository and no
reprocessing facility planned, new atomic power plants can't be built.
#4. If you read the BIG sites you can discover the Presidents actual plans: They
plan to create ' sustainable ' communities ( tell you where to live ), new diet
guidelines ( tell you what to eat ) around mass-transit & high speed rail
( ride the bus, give up your car and don't go anywhere ) and we'll have
an experiential economy ( you won't own anything – no house, no car,
no property ).
Pres. Obamas energy plan is the impoverishment of the American
people.

John Lepant Brighton CO
Speaking of ' Pushin o the Green,' I was at my health club today and saw headlines on one of the TVs from CNN which I NEVER watch at home.
It said- ' Obama states that he has 28 Irish Relatives here in the States, and he will also visit Ireland to contact some of them. The report said that Obama became interested in his mother's relatives after he moved into the White House in 2009.
Many of the relatives said that they do not wish to connect with him because they don't like ' what he's done to America.' (ya think?) One said that he would be interested
A new study claims that President Obama has 28 living relatives who share his Irish ancestry, but some of the newly discovered kin aren't eager to share a pint with him.
http://www.mediaite.com/online/obamas-irish-relat...
heyre-related-to-the-president/
not entirely…. money for domestic production is made in the margins. I have friends who retained mineral rights and often they are told that they will get an increase in the accounting and they have never asked.
See 10% is 10% regardless of the number. So if you want your number to grow then the base has to grow. When the base grows so does the 10% — not by percentage but by total dollars. Now fast forward to current oil production in the U.S. Since the government controls permitting they also control who gets the base and they control what the value of the base is —- which in turn controls the total value of the margins as well. Create an artificial shortage either by lack of production or by lack of refinement then those people who are in control of the resources benefit.
True that…. the MSM is complicit in the crime
Obama authorizing a grant to Brazil, Ken Salzar putting the breaks on oil production, George Soros investing in Brazil's oil production are all a mater of public record at this point.
That oil rigs still have to pay for their mortgages, that those payments are made in the costs of production and that those same oil rigs are considering how to make ends meet if they haven't already left the golf is equal parts common sense and observation.
If Glenn Beck happened to report something like this then codos to him. At least someone has the intestinal fortitude to say or question all this activity.
EPA is further seeking to regulate mercury emissions from coal fired plants…regulations include scrubbers for Coal Fired plants.
Coal Plants already have scrubbers, mkay. and the mercury scrubbers work quite well and are affordable.
Within two weeks of taking office the Obama administration positioned itself to reverse all MACR rulings from prior administrations. Spearheading the charge where Holder and Jackson.
So EPA is now coming out with new mecury emissions regulations for Coal Fired Plants..right on schedule March 2011.
What nobody is reporting anything about is the UN BINDING MERCURY TREATY–again Jackson is leading the charge on that one as Jackson, head of the EPA, meet in 2009 February fro negotiations with 140 other countries in Nairobi for the the UN BINDING Mercury Treaty. UN mercury Policy is being written in part by Tides funded Mercury Policy Project (run by some guy who isn't even a legit scientist).
They are serious, as polar bear studies have been invoked-true story on that crap.
I got time lines and links–Mercury emissions is the end around CO2 (if that one falls through).
Susan Collins sponsored Mercnet funding…this would be the mercury monitoring group–a big fat earmark for Maine….only problem is they are admittedly unable to accurately monitor a mercury plume from a coal fired plant and gage accurate readings…without the help of error ridden computer modeling.
Oh and the best part about the UN BINDING mercury treaty is…..China and India are exempt….like China is running their coal scrubber free-hello?
Lisa Jackson and Kiddie Kollege–google that one and see how concerned Lisa Jackson is about mercury pollution-typical BS-scream about the non problem and ignore the legitimate mercury issues.
I have been throwing this out for over a year now–why I waste my time is beyond reason. maybe in the hopes that someone out there will wake the hell up on the matter.
Binding UN treaty means relinquishing sovereignty–so what will congress do–say mercury is safe? They can't.
BUT the plume emissions numbers are fake and fudged, just the IPCC crap. policy driven science.
Yeah they will shut down coal by way of CO2 or mercury…by any means necessary.
The Japanese nuclear plant problems are a statistical fluke…
We're talking about a what, 9.1 Richter earthquake, (almost apocalyptic in scale), PLUS a tsunami…
Look, its hard for anyone to survive any encounter that incorporates Mike Tyson and a starving Bengal tiger in a limited space…no matter how well you "planned" the situation…
Apply lessons learned, and move on…like a dispersal containment vessel to deal with meltdowns…
Think, "…what do we do when the core melts…?", not "…how do we prevent meltdowns…?"
GE is SO stupid…
Maybe we can force old people to earn their Social Security checks by walking a few hours each day on electricity producing tread mills. No carbon emissions!!! No danger from radiation!!!
Where is any substantial effort going into commercial scale solar? Its not. Wind is winning that battle.
Thank the Senate Majority leader, not Obama, for delaying Yucca, yet again. It doesn't matter. If you have ever seen the space spent fuel takes up on site, you would know that. -Less grass to mow.
I'll spare myself BIG's Obama economic conspiracy theory. Fully privatizing energy & water would impoverish most people a lot faster. Why not just go for air, too? If cable has its way, say goodbye to over the air TV. How's that work for consumers? Innovation? The BIG's paycheck?
I hope you have your "replies" open Cog 'cause I had to come back to this conversation after finding out today that one of the few (um, that would be 2 at this point) licenses to proceed in the Gulf was just issued to Petrobras. In the Gulf, of Mexico, where our oil companies can't get permission. You know the Brazilian, Soros and The Zero government backed oil company? And where is the Zero off to this weekend? So, seeing as there are no coincidences with this clown, exactly which president is in bed with oil companies again?
What source is telling you Petrobas can access the Gulf, where American companies can not?
Can you get your head out of the oil market? Do you think Obama has a shot at any votes from that direction? You bring up Soros, I'll bring up the Koch brothers, and we can keep doing this until we're blue.
Go to Weasel Zippers. I'm not saying this will get him any votes. It won't matter anyway 'cause he's gone next year. What I am saying is that there's gonna' be a nice fat nest egg when he's thrown out. Isn't that your argument when you mention Cheney? That policies were pursued to make money personally? And I didn't say American companies can not get permission, they can, with a court order. It just seems ..uhh…unseemly that Petrobras manages to snag one right out of the box. The only reason I mention Soros is because he's holding the Zero's bag money. If you can't see the dots you'll never see the picture.
