But Is Our Republicans Learning?
by Christopher C. HornerEconomist John Tamny has a piece in Forbes, “The Paradox Of A ‘Giving’ Government”, detailing the new, stepped-up emphasis by business on getting cozy with Washington, and how and why it pays off. In it is a very disturbing example of why we should expect at best weak and highly dispiriting pushback from Republicans when Obama finally gets around to following through on his telegraphed Plan B for the “global warming” agenda, “green jobs”.

“Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., presently a darling among Republicans for his pro-growth policies, has long made known his dislike of the 2009 Obama stimulus plan as a ‘wasteful spending spree.’ Nice rhetoric for sure–and as it turns out not very pure. In October 2009 the congressman wrote a letter to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis in favor of a grant application in his district, which, according to Ryan, would ‘place 1,000 workers in green jobs.’”
That’s pretty stomach-turning, when you consider the source. The government can give us nothing that it has not taken from us. The government cannot give your favored constituencies anything it has not taken away from others. The politics of envy have never been as strong in the United States as in Europe – which fact has given us a chance over the decades, but it appears to be a dwindling chance.
And no one who attended any appreciable part of CPAC this past weekend has any time for the philosophy that these are just the accommodations that one must make to stay here and do good work.
The public increasingly understand the scam that is that new “green jobs” line of argument, and in short green jobs mean pink slips, but not before an awful lot of your money goes to create far more Indian, Chinese and other jobs for every generally temporary gig they set up here.
We also now know there should be tempered optimism about whether Republicans really are ready to lead, that is, whether they are any different than the mess that got tossed out a few short years ago. When your leading thinkers and principled-types can’t resist and/or don’t get the truth about this, they are in trouble. And that’s bad news for the rest of us.
Tea, anyone?

Come on – "Free Trade" is gonna make everyone rich…..right? Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. Doing things "cheaper" is always better.
When will we wise up and throw Free Trade and our temper-tantrum-driven interventionist foreign policy out the window and get back to what made this country STRONG. Closed borders, tariffs, minding our own business.
"whether they are any different than the mess that got tossed out a few short years ago."
Right on Chris!
So many people are asking whether there's any difference between the democrat and republican parties.
But the real question is, Is there any difference between this Republican Party, and the republican party that got thrown out in the last two elections?
"When your leading thinkers and principled-types can’t resist and/or don’t get the truth about this, they are in trouble"
I seem to recall that Newtered Newt bought the Algore Global Warming scam; hook, line and sinker, and apparently drank his Kool-Aid as well. I wonder what Newt thinks now?
Still waiting for Big Government to do an article on the $40 billion per year taxpayers spend on farm subsidies to industrial agribusiness, and how both parties prop this up. Still waiting on Big Government to do an article on how the Patriot Act and similar things like warrantless wiretapping are shredding our 4th amendment and turning us into a Security State.
"The public increasingly understand the scam that is that new “green jobs” line of argument, and in short green jobs mean pink slips, but not before an awful lot of your money goes to create far more Indian, Chinese and other jobs for every generally temporary gig they set up here."
Apparently, if history is any yardstick, about the only way out of this mess, would be a huge war. Get that good old military industrial complex moving again. Oh, that's right, Iraq and Afghanistan should have done that……
Excellent, Chris, even by you standards.
We need politicians who will lead this country out the swap, progressivism has all bu ruined this country
Screw Gingrich. That man is a terrible human being as well as a lame-ass politician. Every time I hear NEWT FOR PREZ! I want to puke. I will never forgive his ringing endorsement for Scozzafava (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/... or his banging his intern while his wife was in chemo.
What we have isn't free trade, it's a trade policy managed by multi-national corporations. Congress has sold our soveriegnity over trade policy to entities with no national allegiance.
The name "Big Government" is tounge in cheek. It's against Big Government run by Democrats, but is for Big Government run by republicans.
Green Jobs is just more communism. No conservative, who truly loves the constitution, can support "green jobs" government progams.
While leading the crusade against Clinton for banging his intern. Deviant perverted hypocrites, the whole lot of em.
I want to make this real simple so that even our elected officials can understand. Your job is:
1. Stop spending
2. Shrink Government
3. Reduce the tax burden
4. Stay out of our lives
Anything more than this is completely unacceptable. If you sign your name to any bill that does not adhere to these specific points you will face our wrath. Is that understood?
Message to John (war hero) McCain: I have heard you say that after the debalce of 'comprehensive immigration reform' that you were in favor of that you 'got it', 'control the border first'. That circumstance told me everything I neede to know about you, just as your proclamation of today, that you were 'mislead' by the promises and representations of the 'stimulus plan'.
What this tell me, one of your AZ constituents, is that YOU DON'T GET IT. The simple fact that you have been there for too freaking long and that if you have not figured out that the dems are lying to you and to us is of even less comfort. Have you not one ounce of common sense? The fact that you only 'get it' after the fact reinforces your image of total and utter incompetance. DO AZ and everyone a favor and RETIRE. I am sick of your 'reach across the aisle' BS. When you do leave take that scumbag loser Lindsay Graham with you. The ONLY decision you have made I agree with was picking Sarah Palin as your running mate, and even then I think someone else thought of that for you. Now please GO AWAY!!!
Sorry.
You lost them already.
You complicated it by adding four items. Shoulda stuck with just one:
1. STAY OUT OF OUR LIVES!
Amen— The Scozzafava endorsement was the wake-up call for me. Prior to that I was luke-warm towards Newt, sitting on the fence, That endorsement knocked me RIGHT off.
I do understand that which is why I capitalize it and put it in quotes.
However, people should also acknowledge we don't have a capitalist system…and the the USSR was not "communism" or "socialism." And not randomly bombing others countries is not "isolationism" nor would it be all that bad if we had isolationism.

Ol' John is just trying to lurch toward the center before Hayworth gets some real traction going. John is to be admired for his service in the Vietnam war but it's tie for him to go.
My motto for the upcoming election season … when in doubt, vote them out.
I was in the store last night and just for fun decided to have a look at the new compact florescent light bulbs. Of the several brands available, there was not one manufactured in the United States. How exactly does going green by sending my money to China help create jobs for Americans?
And that damn commercial about global warming with him sitting next to Pelosi. Nah, he is and will forever be an unwelcomed stranger.
What the hell is a "tounge"?
Next time you are at the store look at the disposal instructions for those "green" lightbulbs. They are extremely toxic.
I live in san francisco, on the various trash days there are always shattered CFL's out on the sidewalk, in the gutters and in the street, and since the storm drains drain to the ocean all that mercury and cadmium winds up in the coastal waters. How very green.
Excuse me but did you read the article? It's your darling Ron who is for green jobs – did you skim over that?
And to think, you're darling Ron wants them!
The chinese absolutely love our labor unions. They know the stronger our unions are here, the more work they get there. It really is that simple! The UNIONS are the greatest single factor in making our once great manufacturing base to become ineffective and to ship all that work to others.
If you want to see the future,,,look no farther than Detroit. If you want to see the future of our economic system,,,look at California. nuff said.
… is Our Republicans Learning? Well, I sure do not see much evidence of that.
Then again, are the Democrats learning anything? Not that I can see …
My motto for the upcoming election? Gridlock is good !
I have been in an extremely foul mood all day. Knowing that Oblamer is going to stuff his cr@p down our throats is making me ill. Not being one who is naturally prone to pessimism, I offer a glittering gem of hope: This recession does have a silver lining. Recently released numbers here in AZ indicate that our population of illegals is dropping. 188,000 of them have left since the recession began!!
There is hope to be found and a lesson to be learned from this:
cont. The lesson that recessions teach: The argument on both sides of the immigration debate has centered on what to do with all those illegals already here. There are too many to morally or logistically move out. This recession has shown us that this common belief is wrong.
If we do not give them work and aid, they will ship themselves home, at no cost to us. When they leave many things happen. Our hospitals have a reduction in the number of unpaid emergency room visits, our prisons will be reduced in population, our crime rates drop, and our welfare roles get smaller. There will be more jobs for US citizens to have, and now after this mess of a recession, the argument that there are no americans who will do that work is proven wrong. For all those americans with an appetite for government money and unemployment checks, get a job or be given one.
Time's up, we either all pull together or we all will perish.
Hey Obama I've got some bad news,
Click on the embedded link and meet your replacement.
His name is Lt. Col Allen West, unlike you he is qualified to be commander and chief of the Armed Forces and is a REAL American Hero.

Want the real truth about green jobs? Eat lots of spinach.
You are an economic nitwit. As well as a Nazi.
"how the Patriot Act and similar things like warrantless wiretapping are shredding our 4th amendment and turning us into a Security State"
Uh, they aren't. Find me the sections in the Patriot Act that shred the 4th Amendment. Show me the court rejection of the PA. Go on. And show an example of illegal domestic wiretapping. Huh? Can't find any?
The Patriot Act is as much a danger to the Constitution as CO2 is to the climat: none whatsoever.
This is why we are still in trouble. Count me among those who are highly skeptical that Republicans won't simply return to their version of the "great game" once they feel they have cleared probation.
Revolution not needed, just get back to Limited Government with few responsibilities and a much smaller budget. More money in the hands of the people will solve most of our problems.
I can't agree more. Please don't believe that John McCain was mislead on anything. This man has been in DC for how many years? He knows what's going on, he just doesn't do the right thing for America. He was a war Hero, but hey, that was long ago, he’s no hero now. We need to close the southern border and immediately. Besides the illegal Mexicans and South Americans coming in here sneaking over the border, does any American with just half a brain not think that terrorists from the Middle East haven't come into the country this way also?
We need to lock the doors in this country, no more imports, for a period of time. If we need something then build a factory and make it. Sorry to say folks, but this country will not ever get back to being what it once was, unless we start manufacturing here again.
Put armed guards at the border quickly! That’s good news, another 10million to go!
It’s the classic Potomac Two Step, say one thing and do another. The problem Washington, we’re watching you now, you slimy rats. We will remember, come November!
You are correct. For that matter, many of them come (when there is work) and leave when they want (to see families, etc.). Reminds me of Cheech's "Born in East LA" when the family calls immigration on themselves so they get a free bus ride to a family member's wedding in Baja.
Closed borders, tariffs, minding our own business?
When was that?
Um, wiretapping without a warrant WAS illegal before Congress made if legal after the fact. Bush/Cheney committed a crime (among others) and Obama simply legalized it. Have you heard of checks and balances?
If you need me to point out how the Patriot Act violates the 4th amendment, then you need to turn off the Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. I guess habeus corpus and posse comitatus were "quaint" to you?
But Is Our Republicans Learning? by Christopher C. Horner: I hope so, or it's over! But regardless, tough times are ahead because of a politically correct incompetent and inept voting public! Look: Breaking News from Moneynews.com "Buffett's Partner: 'It's Over' for U.S. Economy. Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s longtime business partner in Berkshire Hathaway, warns that the U.S. economic empire is crumbling before our eyes, thanks to federal debt and poor planning. The article leads with this headline: “Basically, It’s Over.” "
Yea! I've been arrested twice for calling Sportsman's Warehouse and asking about reloading equipment.
I was tortured by guys blowing predator calls and was forced to eat turkey jerky.
Where is the ACLU when you finally really need them?
WAS ANYONE ABLE TO GET TO THE PIECE HE REFERS TO????
I link to Forbes front page and can't find it. I like to check my sources and I want to see where Paul Ryan actually did this before I call his office.
How many times are you gonna post this? Why don't you do some research, write an honest article, and submit it to A B. If you're as smart as you thinf you are, you might be making comments on your own article next week instead of trolling.
The new Red is Green!
Or, 1) Read the Constitution.
2) Follow the Constitution
3) Lather, Rinse, Repeat
One way we could solve a bunch of these problems is through a balanced budget amendment. Here in Ark. our state Constitution mandates a balanced budget and our legislature only meets every other year for budgetary issues. We have our share of problems here in the Natural State but we are in better fiscal shape that most of the other states.
Doing nothing is not enoughfor me. Government at all levels must be drastically scaled back. btw, I live in Minnesota.
What happens when your household income drops? You cut spending right? What I dont understand is why the so called "leaders" of our nation can say with a straight face (and I mean all of them that are presently there with a D or R beside their name) that any of them stand for fiscal responsibility. I sure hope we can get some fresh new leadership in there this year or we might be done for good folks.
I also wait with much anticipation on how the timid republicans will handle the little healthcare talk…..I feel like im a Saints fan from back in the 80's and 90's when you always expected them to screw up a game they already had in the bag and lose it.
Conservatives will have to take back the republicrat party and then go to war over policy that's been shaped by liberals for years. I'm not just talking stopping whats happening now, I'm talking about rolling back alot of the crap they've done in the past too.
I've got my fingers crossed they will do the right thing…….but I wont hold my breath.
Point to the language in the Act! It is a simple request you should have no trouble finding the places were wire tapping without a warrant (court review) is authorized. Also point to the pending or closed cases of violations of the Fourth Amendm, ent. Otherwise your house is built on sand. This blog gives plenty of space for you to prove your point with facts not conjecture and inuendo.
Couldn't agree more. The TeaParty movement has no love for the established leaders here in AZ. McCain is at the top of the "out damn spot" list he knows it and thus all the stops are off in this campaign of his to get re-elected.
Lets hope "The People" are not as gullible as he thinks they are!
And gridlock keeps the crap they have done to the Country in place for as long as there is gridlock. Not something I want to have happen. It is time to change the Country's diapers, all 535 of them.
"Business getting cozy with government" is called Fascism….
If the green industry could make a profit without tax payer subsistance they're wouldn't be a need for subsistance from the gov't period. Every study out their that is legitimate shows that green cannot compete against our current systems in place. Green jobs creation is for how long, maybe 1 year? And when the economy doesn't turn around with all those green jobs then what? Spend more tax payer money and put more people out of work. And please don't get me started on the the mass trans jobs and how it will create a gazillion jobs at the tax payers expense.
It's just that simple. I have to say that I don't seem to have any more confidence in the Republicans than I do the Dems. They are all in there to do just one thing. Line their pockets from special interest groups with the support of the American Poeple. Chose carefully this fall, very carefuly.
Decent rant, I feel you held back a little though.
Patriot Act falls in with the defense and crusading budget, you aren't aloud to talk about it.
Farm subsidies and general meddling in the agriculture market depends which state you are from as to wether or not you can discuss it.
Governor Elliot Spitzer was one of the earlier victims of the Patriot Act.
Republicans Learning?????????
Just heard that Scott Brown just voted for closure on the "Jobs" bill……….
I certainly hope there is a good explanation here…..
Scott Brown helps democrats advance "jobs bill"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100222/ap_on_go_co/u...
same old republicans, like I posted here weeks ago, Scott Brown was nothing more than a message from the ticked off people, that is all
I've waited for weeks for just one article on this site that discusses fiscal conservatism with regards to defense and "war" spending. How can you discuss fiscal conservation without talking defense?
Coincidentally, I just created these graphics, which generally relate to your article.

All I see is political expediency coming from the Rino National Convention.
When in doubt, vote them out.
I wish I could say the same for Kalifornia. I keep hoping that Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein and the rest of the illegals would go home. Oh that includes Arnold too.
"If we need something then build a factory and make it" and just who is going to design it, operate the machines, do the tooling? This country has been doing it very best to eliminate any form of manufacturing for over 30 years. Companies refuse to invest in training, they refuse to invest in technology that helps them manufacture so it goes away. The trades are looked down upon but their the ones that will do the machining, grinding, forming, assembly.
Maybe I'm off base here but I think we're screwed if we continue down this road of being a "service economy" …. "you want fries with that?"
If the Republicans have learned anything could easily be proven; all they need to do is prove a list of incumbents that will not receive any funds for reelection from the RNC. Now that would prove to me they got it this time.
Stop buying the media spin here. Even if you voted against the stimulus, there's nothing wrong with trying to get your constituents their share of that money. When the Democrats pass pork that WE ALL have to pay for, and then letting them only send the money to Democrat districts is stupid.
In 2 Words: "Simplify Life". http://www.buyerbeaware.blogspot.com
4) and if you can't find a very specific mention of 'whatever' being allowed by the constitution, you can't do it.
CL, you should do your job as an American citizen and seek out real information rather than that which meets your predetermined beliefs.
The atmospheric warming effects of carbon can easily be demonstrated in a laboratory. Or go to Venus – atmosphere mostly CO2, surface temp 450 C.
We know how much carbon we're putting into the atmosphere (~90 million tons per day).
The end result is obvious to anyone who's intelligent and intellectually honest. But instead, you choose to listen to such learned scientific experts as Rush Limbaugh because they tell you what you want to hear.
Sorry boog
I do not have predetermined beliefs, nor do I get my information from Rush. Where do you get yours? Nobody has been to Venus, so you are having to take the word of some "scientist" for your set of numbers there. That argument just went flat.
How do YOU know the number is 90 million tons of carbon? Again, a scientist put that number in front of YOU. Again, that argument just died.
People die every day from carbon monoxide poisioning, but NOBODY in the history of the world has ever died from carbon dioxide. You don't even know what it is.
What are your credentials, what are your bona fides? I'm sure you are a dissatisfied dweller of subburbia, who only has opinions based upon what some clown has told you, and you then, to make yourself feel better, parrot the information back……
Where'd you get "Algore"? Not from Rush? Did you make that up and give it to him?
We can easily gauge the amount of carbon that we're putting into the atmosphere. We know how much fossil fuel is being produced. We know how much CO2 is produced when this fuel is burned. Do we know down to the last ton? No, but we can get close.
Spacecraft have landed on Venus and measured the temperature.
To say that I don't know what carbon dioxide is is absurd, because the name alone tells you: a molecule composed of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms (DI-oxide). It is toxic in large doses, actually, but the real problem with it is the warming that it causes – which, again, has been demonstrated in labs (and on the surface of Venus).
A great source of information on this subject is NASA scientist James Hansen's book, "Storms of my Grandchildren." Note that I said scientist, not "scientist." He's been employed for his entire life as a scientist. He is respected as a scientist by other scientists. Scientists have a pretty good record so far. They've made some mistakes, but unless you're out on a hike right now, practically everything around you is the result of scientific discovery.
So I have that track record, versus some guy posting on a conservative website who implies science is a bunch of B.S. Gee – which one is probably right?
And by the way – I'm not a scientist, but my field is quite technical and requires in-depth understanding of physics, as well as laboratory measurements, blind testing, and experimentation. Most of my work is presented in public forums for review and criticism. I've been doing what I do for 20 years. So I do claim a reasonable understanding of the scientific process.
If the money has already been appropriated, it stands to reason that a Congressman will try and get some for his district. I don't see this being hypocritical at all. The Congressman is trying to get some of the money that has been taken from his district back.
The issue is preventing these appropriations from happening in the first place.
