The Global Warming Campaign Issue, There for the Taking

Kim Strassel writes, in “The EPA’s Carbon Bomb Fizzles” in the Wall Street Journal, with typical insight that:
“President Obama, having failed to get climate legislation, didn’t want to show up to the Copenhagen climate talks with a big, fat nothing. So the EPA pulled the pin. In doing so, it exploded its own threat.”
Far from alarm, the feeling sweeping through many quarters of the Democratic Congress is relief. Voters know cap-and-trade is Washington code for painful new energy taxes. With a recession on, the subject has become poisonous in congressional districts. Blue Dogs and swing-state senators watched in alarm as local Democrats in the recent Virginia and New Jersey elections were pounded on the issue, and lost their seats.
But now? Hurrah! It’s the administration’s problem! No one can say Washington isn’t doing something; the EPA has it under control. The agency’s move gives Congress a further excuse not to act.”
I am with her up to the end, at which point I must respectfully disagree. This dispute assumes, however, that congressional Republicans have a pulse. Yes, yes, I know, Kim and I may find ourselves on the same page here yet.
What I am saying is that far from relieving congressional Democrats of their cap-and-trade burden, this sets the stage for making it worse. That is, any sentient Republican effort to nationalize, or simply make the most of, the 2010 elections not only ensures that each and every Senate campaign includes the “will you or won’t you?” question about voting to ratify the Kyoto II treaty – now set to be agreed in Mexico, exempting Mexico, and exporting U.S. manufacturing jobs to Mexico, one week after our November 2010 elections – but it also includes a vow not unlike those found in the Contract With America: “We promise an up-or-down vote on whether the EPA can do this to you and our economy without Congress.”
A sympathetic if more symbolic effort at doing just this fizzled in an appropriations vote this week, buried amid everything else. But broken out as a discrete pledge, and vote, it seems difficult to believe that this would not result in the Congressional Review Act stopping any EPA rulemaking cold.
That, of course, would also require a change in management. Which is part of the pitch. But, again, I may be assuming too much.

Bureaucracy (EPA) is one of the biggest problems with our Government. We do not elect them and have no direct redress to them. Congress must limit the Executive branch.

it's a target rich environment right now, with ample issues available to illustrate the fundamental differences between conservatism and ….. them…. all too often i shake my head at how easily the right side of the fence gets suckered accepting the premise, and then arguing the details. c'mon folks!! this is some really low hanging fruit.
The removal of the Executive Branch wouldn't work, it would nullify any checks & balances that are still working but we do need to limit the over all power of the Federal government as a whole & return it to the States where it should be.
That is a start. Conservatives need to take back the house and immediately remove funding for the EPA, the department of education and the Energy department. Send a message big time. Then start working on HUD et al.
Pick a feel god subject and then propose a government solution, that is the playbook of the Democrats. It does not matter if the proposed solution actually addresses the problem as long as the legislation has a catchy name. AWG or man made global warming was the perfect problem for democrats because the symptoms would not be evident but the fear could be easily fanned into an overwhelming desire to act. Even if you buy into the AWG tripe none of the proposed solutions actually addresses the problem. The real problem is this. The entire world needs an energy source that is efficient, easily transportable and is universaly acceptable. Oil or more properly hydrocarbons are our preferred energy source right now and wind and solar do not fit the bill.
Cap and Trade and other proposed government interventions do nothing to solve the problem and they only give government more power and reward certain Institutions and Compnies by going along. Oil will eventually cost too much to continue as the prime source of energy. New technologies will come along o replace it. What they will be I can only hazard a guess. Government has no business dictating what new technologies will rise and which will fall. Just look at the mandates of Ethonal. It actually costs more energy overall to supprot this program than if we were using oil alone.
I feel a need to correct you. It's not the Soros Virus it's the Soros Chronic Disease. This man needs to go back to stealing others $$. He is a phirrana.
So here we are at the cross roads of history. What we do as a Nation and a People will have lasting consequences. If we listen to the doom sayers and follow thier advice it will lead to massive problems in the future and the possibility of more global conflict not less. The way to peace in the future is to allow the developing nations the ability to develope with as little interference from the rest of us as possible. If we follow the AWG crowd the UN will dictate to all nations just how much improvements they will be allowed to make. This is a recipe for disaster.

DEFUND the EPA– the federal government has NO business with a "national" environmental policy, other than for purely BS politics– it should be state or local based, only– since environmental concerns that humans do have influence over, are in fact, local only– if that is hard to accept, just look back at the recorded history of mankind's single largest release of explosive energy that's ever been intelligently designed: nuclear bombs– then take a look at, for example, the temperature readings at each site of detonation, and onward in time– after the initial superhot blast temperatures, the atmosphere dissipated ALL of the excessive heat– and has continued to do so, to this day–

Taxes and regulations add to the cost of a product. And thus it adds to global warming. Poverty is far more harmful to the environment than booming economy. Once again I call on you greenies to truly fight GW by fighting the real cause of GW which is government size.. Lets reduce government by half and save our planet.. Global Warming is the WMD's of Iraq. Since the emails came it has shown that Global Warming created by man is not proven, just as no one could prove WMD's in Iraq. But while the left shouted so loadly about the lack of WMD's they are very very quiet about the lack of proof of man creating Climate Change. In fact they have more proof that man attempting to stop Climate Change is more detrimental than anything. Let Mother Nature handle the situation, she has done an excellent job since the beginning of time.

Environmentalism is the new Socialism. Same ideology, same goal of control over our lives in every possible way, same goal of reducing our standard of living, not raising it.

The EPA ruling is a deliberate attempt to foist Cap & Trade upon us. Bureaucrats in the administration, corporations, Al Gore, etc. stand to make billions from their purchase of carbon credits should C&T pass. That's what this is all about. Obummer's good friend was the only one authorized to sell carbon credits thru the Chicago Climate Exchange. Imagine that! This is another moneymaking scam. Since C&T was declared all but dead in the Senate, the threat of the EPA's draconian regulations is meant to be a greater evil, a punishment we can avoid if only we pass C&T instead.
This is a good post. Too often the premises are accepted at the outset. I believe the target-rich environment will challenge the resources of any conservative governing body that will have the good (mis?) fortune to gain a leadership role. I say both parties have turned their back on 2 centuries of American success and beliefs. They sold the American dream for power and have successfully turned the electoral process from representation to re-election.. Politicians do not hold themselves accountable and it has been proven the PEOPLE can not hold them accountable. In 2010 we might unseat a few bad guys, but as proven by history it is only temporary as long the electoral process is rigged.

Please stop with the "no-one could prove WMDs in Iraq", because 1) 200 tons of yellowcake means Saddam had nuclear reactors going. 2) What was in those 18-wheelers that headed over into Syria the eve of the war, anyways? Playdough? 3) The US Army (for whatever reason) left many WMD facilities unexplored. I'm talking known places with barbed wire and concrete shelters that were never touched. 4) Sarin canisters were found.
In short, the issue was that Saddam had used WMDs before, had the capability to do so at any time, and had the instability that meant that it was simply a matter of time.
