What’s It All About, Albert?
by Christopher C. HornerWe know why new investment in auto assembly in recent decades has not gone to Michigan but to, say, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky. In short and making no effort to put too a fine point on it, this is to avoid the crushing weight of the collective bargaining agreements that killed American auto manufacturing.

We also know why the unions push “green jobs” so aggressively, despite the overwhelming evidence that the schemes harm employment (that is, reduce the overall work force): as effectively federally mandated (but certainly “federally”– that is, taxpayer) — funded) jobs, they are uniformly de facto or de jure Davis-Bacon or otherwise union jobs.
Read the following excerpt from Sen. James Inhofe’s opening statement in a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing today on that body’s version of cap-and-trade energy rationing, Kerry-Boxer:
“Let me recount a telling moment in [a recent] hearing. Sen. Sessions asked the government witnesses-and they were CBO, EPA, EIA, and CRS-whether anyone disagreed with the finding that the net effect of cap-and-trade would be a reduction in jobs. None did.”
But at least these schemes increase the union labor force. And that’s really what’s important.
Today’s “E&E Daily” story should be viewed through that lens:
REGIONS: Group claims the South can rise again on ‘green’ jobs
Green jobs schemes kill jobs on net. Unions and greens have teamed up (“Blue-Green Coalition!”) to promote these economic drains because they funnel taxpayer-funded workers, and therefore taxpayer funding, into the unions which — like windmill makers — know they can only grow through such government mandates.
Now, supporters of the global warming bills have adopted a curious tack in the face of public awareness of the global warming science falling apart: the global warming bill isn’t really about global warming. But consider how absurd the argument is: our global warming bill isn’t really about global warming it’s a jobs/national security measure but no one takes jobs/national security seriously so we had to call it a global warming bill.
Of course they’re right, the bill isn’t about global warming. It isn’t about CO2 concentrations. It wouldn’t do anything about either under any scenario or set of assumptions, so it’s unreasonable to actually believe it is about those things. It is about what it would do. And what it would do is transfer wealth to political constituencies to make today’s governing class a permanent one; it would limit your individual and economic liberties. It would impose a long-held wish list of policy demands offered for decades in the name of every threat, “greatest!” and otherwise.
As we continue finding with this crowd, the issue is never the issue. And their constantly shifting arguments for the “global warming” schemes prove that again, in this case, more convincingly than any discourse about the climatic uselessness and economic harm of their policies ever could.

Great article Christopher.
If folks want to know the real Al Gore, they should Google "Al Gore Zinc Farmer." It is a hoot! Folks do not know that Al Gores daddy, was a "biddness podnah" of the illustrious Dr. Armand Hammer. Gore Sr. was involved with Hammer when they formed the old Island creek Coal Co. That, and the family zinc mine, in conjunction with the gore Family Tobacco Allotment, made them limosuine liberals, and quite wealthy……………….
Cost of Hydo and Nuclear power is .02 cents per kWh. Cost of Solar and Wind power is over a $1.00 per kWh. Wind power kills Birds and Bats by the thousands. Solar power uses excessive amounts of water to produce steam needed.
This is now considered the Green Solution? Only if you are out to rape peoples money is it green.
It will be almost impossible to bring this government under any kind of control, unless the unions are dealt with, without mercy.
exactly, and daddy was big shareholder of Occidental Petroleum with podnar Hammer, who was very closely connected to his other podnars in Russia……hmmmmmmm…..very, interesting…….al must take great pleasure when he lifts off in that gulfstream private jet (no carbon footprint) and the piolt says "wheels up"……
James,
Thats good. Then you know.
Dr. Armand Hammer, Occidental Petroleum, Russian KGB, Island Creek Coal, Gore Sr., Gore Jr. Russian KGB (oops, there it is again!) Barrack Hussein Obama……………..
MMMMM, MMMMMM, MMMMM
I agree, if we win back congress and senate first order of business should be to not only defund every leftist organization by an and all means, but in the future to make it a criminal offense to create any such funding.
The corrupticians have been bleeding us dry so long they have brought it to a high art, well with the Prestitutes that isnt say much since they lie for their pimps in government.
In Citizens of this country need to understand just why, what, who, and when these things were done to them, then the people involved need to be driven from government and made sure that they can never return.
It's just like the lefturds to destroy 100K job's to create 1K jobs, so long as 60% of the 1K vote for them, nothing but vote buying, corrupt, unethical theivery.
The global warming religion, excuse me, the man-made climate change religion (since the rebranding), will say and do anything to get their agenda rammed through. It never has been about climate change. It has to do with making the leaders of this new climate religion rich and bolstering the corrupt labor unions.
It is designed to drag the American economy down, destroy the middle class and make them new members of the poor class as well as ending the United States as we know it. That is a perfect combination to recruit the Leftists out there who will do most of the leg work to support the religion.
Unions benefit by controlling labor once and getting a strong political voice again as well as the union leaders making a pile of cash. The leaders of the climate religion benefit by getting rich off the scam and being able to force the rest of America to do what they want. The Leftists benefit by seeing the US reduced to a third world economy along with the elimination of their most hated class of people, the middle class (who they always end up hurting the most with their ideas). What a grand slam combination…
They are proposing a State opt-out for health care, lets do an opt-out for Cap & Trade also.
Since the unions are already parasites who are comfortably accommodated, why not let their hosts succeed and multiply to the detriment of those who refuse to host them?
Too bad those they feast off of are often too weak to survive without outside intervention, let alone prosper.
It is time for the nation to take a flea dip.
Just wait, it will be determined that the fine-print legalese establishes (or even just confirms) a federal Right To (Affordable) Health Care, which is of course a Basic Human Right (go ask the UN). Afterwards the "Sovereign States" will have no choice but to accept it.
For the other, have they not already established at least a de facto Right To A Clean And Safe Environment?
States' Rights: They have the Right to bend over either forwards or backwards when they grab their ankles. And that is about it.

That's really an innovative idea, Dan. I LIKE it.
However, we know that Team Obama and the eco-nuts would promptly toss it in the garbage pail without even reading it. Then claim that no one from the opposition offered alternatives so we're stuck with the Waxman-Markey monstrosity.
Unions should be required to post their balance sheet and income statement on the Internet for the union members to see. Included should be the pay and benefits that the union bosses get and how many union bosses relatives work for the union .
The next time Al Gore begins pompously pontificating, someone ought question him with this:
http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Occidental_Petro...
He won't go near it. Natural resources has paid for the Gore legacy.
If "we" win back Congress? Who's "we"? Republicans? Haven't you figured out by now that Republicans are just as bad about all the things you complain about? They grew government during their post 9/11 rein and funded all sorts of things we would find repugnant.
Ah, how entertaining. Throwing red meat out for the Fox News/Rush Limbaugh "conservatives" to spew forth their hatred and vitriol. The funniest is the idea that a president and "leftist" people want nothing more than to bring down the United States. What deluded world do you folks live in?
The real world. Where have you been hiding, Washington, DC?
More of the Gore legacy, Island Creek Coal, and Al Gore Jr. was the beneficiary.
Oddly enough, Island Creek was the last of the "old time" coal companies. They even had a company store. Maybe that is how Algore views US? We're all going to take our company script, to the company store, to see the company doctor………………..
I'll more than meet you half way on that. Bush was wrong, by creating the Department of Homeland Security, and with the passing of the Patriot Act. He was further wrong, by getting US into two wars, with two Muslims countries. it was a waste. It bankrupted US, just like Afghanistan bankrupted Russia. Hind sight is 20/20. There is not one drop of American blood worth all the resources in the middle east. Bush should have dropped only TWO Bombs, and turned that whole geographic area into a sheet of glass………..
I guess Al, I am lying about Global Warming in order to make millions Gore, did not receive the memo about the Polar Bears. If these Global Warming Liars would keep their pie holes shut for a while, we would measure less CO2 emissions around them.
My comments are my contribution in Serving our Government.
Remember to Vote in 2010 and 2012.
Unions killed the U.S. auto industry just as they killed the U.S. steel industry. All of the billion$ for the GM and Chrysler bailouts went to union pensions and legacy healthcare. I've had it with the unions. My next vehicle will be made by non-union Texans who build Toyotas about 70 miles away from my home. The UAW will not get another nickel from me.
Actually, the state opt-out provision is only for the benefits of the "public option", not the costs. Citizens of the opt-out state would still be required to pay for health care or be penalized by the IRS. So, "opt-out" really amounts to a trojan hourse to get the legislation passed.
If you don't personally support the current administration's anti-capitalist and single world government wealth redistribution agenda, which other liberal faction do you belong to? the one that expects to benefit at taxpayer expense through government funded jobs given to the unions? the one that expects to benefit by making cheap energy more expensive so they can sell "green" promises? Or maybe the clueless "20-somethings" who ignore the history of authoritarian government evolution, economics, and scientific reality in favor of ascribing credibility to a leader skilled at delivering platitudes and falsehoods in a pretty package?
