Who Is and Isn’t Qualified to Speak on Global Warming

HornerMere days before Senators Barbara Boxer and John Kerry are scheduled to introduce their version of controversial global warming “cap-and-trade” legislation — if several months after EPA whistle-blower Dr. Alan Carlin drew attention to the fact that the recent published scientific literature presents a decided tilt against prevailing “global warming” scientific wisdom — the New York Times has run a piece diminishing Dr. Carlin’s stature and findings.
This meme is picked up by those running with the Times’ “news”. For example, today’s trade press outlet “E&E Daily” styles their #2 story this way: “Employee lacked credentials for endangerment views”.
That’s odd.
Carlin has been with EPA since its inception in the early 1970s, having earned a degree in physics from CalTech. His lack of the same qualifications implicitly possessed by our law-givers comes from his having gone on to attain a PhD in economics from MIT.
This is different than the Times’ (and others’) treatment of and lack of interest in the academic training of the individual regularly cited without such “just an economist” commentary as a leading and essentially unimpeachable authority, the economist and former railway engineer Rajendra Pachauri. The Times has even hailed Pachauri in the past as the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s chief “climatologist”. Climatology is a specialty field if ever there was one but a qualification which Pachauri, for all of his other virtues toiling for years in the UN vineyards, attained by virtue of being appointed to head the IPCC. This is unfairly disparate treatment.
Carlin’s findings have been used to counter those of the body led by Pachauri, and both will be aired by competing sides next week as supporting their advocacy for and against “cap-and-trade”. Carlin’s danger to the agenda is that he reaffirms and reminds us how EPA (and IPCC) have actually avoided making the case for said agenda, which in fact has never been made beyond a flimsy and fatally flawed syllogism: CO2 concentrations have increased, Man is responsible for a lot of that, ergo Man is responsible for climate change. Causation, not a minor point, is missing there.
As to what distinctions might explain this disparate treatment, besides what are on paper Carlin’s more appropriate academic and other relevant training, is that Carlin objected to using these claims to advance an agenda requiring much, much more and very Big Government. Pachauri heads a group whose charter expressly charged it with supporting international governance on the basis of the issue.
Maybe if Carlin stayed at a Holiday Inn last night — oh, and repented his heresy — he would be a world’s leading climate scientist, too. Until then, think about this next week when you are told of the IPCC’s glories and Carlin’s deficiencies.

Green is the new Red. One common trait of all totalitarian regimes: Crisis. Government and groups have to have, or create, a crisis in order to make large leaps in policy change. The populace has no motive to change if everything is going well. Global climate change is just one example of this. This is the same reason that Obama and Bush said that if we didn't bail out the banks, the economy would crumble. Obama says that if we don't pass cap and trade, the water will turn to jet fuel and be ignited by the sun in apocalyptic downpours of fire and brimstone. As Rahm Emanuel said, "never let a crisis go to waste." However, when a crisis cannot be sufficiently established, as in the healthcare debate, people tend to move more cautiously. Global warming… oh, wait a minute, I mean global climate change, is simply the next in a long line of manufactured crises intended to redistribute wealth, achieve social justice, and implement extreme, left-wing policies.

Carbon trading units fell from 7 dollars last year to 20 cents this months. Why are they still incredibly overpriced?

Climate change is a crock of lies. Coolest summer in many years in the Midwest. The Kansas City are did not even see a 100 degree day and only 22 that passed 90. Something to think about.

Reminds me of of the documentaries they have aired showing a polar bear adrift on a piece of ice. Of course they neglect to mention that polar bears willingly swim great distances in search of food and will often seize the opportunity to rest on the first piece of ice they come across. The environmentalists however would have you believe that it is the only piece of ice for hundreds of miles and the poor polar bears are on the brink of extinction because there's no more ice left. They truly are desperate to keep people in a state of panic so they can appear to be acting in their best interests while scamming them.

This whole discussion is a ridiculous example of the Left’s obsession with who is “authorized” to speak on a certain subject. A thinking, reasoned mind immediately rejects the notion of “experts” and chooses to look at the actual evidence being presented. This is one of the most popular tricks in the MSM bag, because innumerate and ignorant reporters can easily cherry-pick “experts” who support the leftwing cause and/or be duped by them (see “secondhand” smoke).
We need to rid all logical fallacies from public discourse. No better place to start than removing the Appeal to Authority from all debates. Read the papers and make up your own mind.

Well, let's see. I think I read that the earth's magnetic pole was over-due to flip. They could try to stop that. The dangerous problem of solar wind sounds like it needs quite a lot of tax money to combat. Have you heard how dangerous the Higg's Boson is? Some people claim the ocean levels are rising due to global warming. In fact, the oceans are rising because the earth is compacting under the weight of the human race. As the land is pushed downward, the water must naturally rise. Unless we tax people for each pound they weigh above the optimal weight for their height, the worse the problem of earth compaction becomes. And of course, we need to outlaw any vehicle that weighs more that 1200 pounds and we have to outlaw jumping jacks.
If all that fails, just watch some old Star Trek episodes, they invented all sorts of new problems, new types of radiation that causes all sorts of problems, any number of catastrophies for old James Tiberious Kirk to solve.
