Words Will Never Hurt Me – The Art of the Political Insult
by Chris BergIn a city as mercurial as Washington DC words are often ascribed additional weight and meaning. It is the rare politician that can cut a man down to size with a word or a turn of phrase. Recently we’ve seen two men who have perfected this, Bill Clinton and Dick Cheney.

Clinton described Barack Obama and his presidential bid as “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen.” With one phrase, Clinton managed to diminish Obama and his accomplishments. Rather than conjure to mind images of Kennedy and Camelot, Clinton’s phrase brought forth vivid images of Alice in Wonderland. Bill Clinton is a calculating man and he understood the weight of his words. He even had to defend them as the mainstream media finally caught wind of the insult.
Dick Cheney managed to similarly impact Obama’s image with one word, dithering. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines dither as:”to act nervously or indecisively.” When used by Cheney to describe Barack Obama’s stance on Afghanistan it carried more weight. With the use of one word Cheney managed to portray Obama as weak, indecisive, and unfit to lead. Dithering certainly doesn’t conjure to mind images of Barack Obama as a mythical figure who can do no wrong.
It’s a rare skill to be able to so dramatically impact one’s image with the use of merely a word or a pithy phrase.
Here in DC this happens more often than you’d think. However, it’s the truly special cases where one’s name becomes a verb. This only happens when you’ve reached a certain level of infamy. Robert Bork, Tom Daschle, and now Dede Scozzafava can count themselves among this elite group.
Robert Bork served as a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. This Court is often regarded as the second most powerful in the land. President Ronald Reagan nominated Bork for the Supreme Court in 1987. This set off a firestorm of criticism from the Left. They vilified and attacked Bork and managed to defeat his confirmation. The verb “to Bork” has come to mean to viciously attack a nominee to prevent their appointment to public office. An example, liberals tried to Bork the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.
Tom Daschle served the people of South Dakota as their Senator from 1987 until 2005. He also served as Senate Majority Leader. Daschle, still a power player in the DC luncheon circuit, was focused more on his position as Majority Leader than his commitment to the people of South Dakota. John Thune, a bright, charismatic former Congressman took him on and defeated him. Now we use the verb “to Daschle” to describe rooting a national leader, who has neglected his commitment to his voters, from office. To use it in a sentence: “Soon Harry Reid will be Daschled out of office.”
The Washington Post has declared Scozzafava to be the newest verb. Scozzafava was the Republican candidate for the race in New York’s 23rd Congressional District. On the eve of the election she bowed to the popular will and dropped out of the race, recognizing the Conservative groundswell for Doug Hoffman. Scozzafava then endorsed the Democrat running for the seat. Her name will now be associated with the will of the people choosing a candidate with conservative principles over a more moderate candidate. For example, will the moderate Senate candidate be Scozzafaved?
For the moment Dede Scozzafava will join the ranks of Robert Bork and Tom Daschle. We’ll see whether her name will live on after her fifteen minutes have faded.

didn't you forget one more, carter. but, possibly you waited, because thanks to barak obama, jimmy carter will no longer be seen as the worst president in modern times. when are the repubs going to revive the misery index?
Boy there are a lot of Senators and Representatives that are going to be Daschled in 2010. I am looking forward to it. And the Republicans will be Scozzafaved if they do not start acting like Conservatives. Great article by the way Mr, Berg!
I doubt "Scozzafava" will last very long. Aside from its length, it is too ambiguous. It could also mean to turn and attack the party to which you owe your political life. e.g. "The conservatives better support him or he might Scozzafava them."
Daschele forgot/overlooked paying his taxes, yup, another lib idiot whos gonna use taxpayer money to fund all these govt. programs and make himself look like a good guy in the process, but hes not even gonna pay his fair share.
Cheney why didnt you clean Barracks clock by running for prez. ???? huh
and soon 'Obama' will stand for?…
Any guesses on this? We'll go with 'out of his league'. But we are being kind.
Any others?
Dick Cheney is the toughest man I've ever met, and the most charming……..
I read something, maybe here, maybe at big hollywood, that mentioned the misery index. In a nutshell:
dissatisfaction with government is in direct proportion to guns and ammo sales.
Empty gun store shelves = extremely low approval ratings of congress and/or the president.
I agree it's just to hard to remember, kind of like her.
i waved to him once as he drove by in a limo, but he was reading a paper. I love when he kicks lib butt…must have been cool meeting him
Well I guess the whole country is getting bent over and S'obamized (I leave that to the imagination of the reader)
A new Egyptian Pharaoh could erase someone from history if he despised his predecessor enough. I think there will be enough contempt for Obama when he is done trying to destroy America that it might be a first step towards "Healing" the nation when it's all over.
How about a "dithering fairy tale"? I also like to quote Cheney…"F*** you Obama!"
Cheney is superb. I wish he would run for President. Right now, he's the closest to being Ronald Reagan-like that I've seen from the selection available on the right side of the aisle.
I've got one word for that pic of Cheney: Hot!
To follow your line of thinking… "Not in my job description"
My line of thinking…. "Peter Pan", he hasn't grown into a responsible man, and never will.
I never liked Cheney during his term. However since the election of Prez Obama and the Democratic majority, I am seeing the demise of our country and our constitution in the hands of the Libs.
I am still a Dems but really admires Cheney for his patriotism and candor.
with apologies to J.M. Barrie…
Peter Pan was, at least, truly about Hope. Not sure what this character's real purpose is…
Outstanding article. Or that's how the current and dithering president would say it. Everything is always "outstanding" with him. And Clinton's "fairy-tale" line was hysterical. Still it was the late William F. Buckley, Jr. who deserved a bit of mention in the article. His exchange with Charlie Rangle in '91 is class.
Or you could say, "I don't wanted a Scozzafavian Republican in my district (or state)."
Great post. Very interesting. As CS Lewis once wrote, people need to be reminded much more often than instructed.
Words matter. History matters. Sadly most Americans don't know what to do with either. http://rjmoeller.com/2009/11/mere-conservatism-hi...
Great post. And great quotes from Dick and Bill!
I've got one word… "FAILURE", too bad I don't carry their weight.
There are going to be many Dem names added to that list. You can lump Obama/Reid/Pelosi under one heading since they are all equally bad. Perhaps use their first initials ie ORP. To be ORPed is to totally screw over the American people while ignoring the will of the people to advance your own radical agenda. Don’t forget that Rahm is already getting a new usage. To Rahm down a bill that no one wants for example.
This is the biggest bunch of “verbers” I’ve ever seen and history will regard them with disdain.
When I heard Bill Clinton's comment on Obama's presidential bid I laughed and reminded my friends of a Noel Coward comment. Someone approached him and said she was <Insert Name here> with emphasis being on her being a very important person. Coward smiled, kissed her hand and replied, "Of course you are." He replied with a civil phrase, however he totally undercut her self-importance.
Love Cheney.
If it wouldn't result in a libel suit, I've often thought that the Obama/Pelosi/Reid combo of OPR could be converted to "OPRAH" – you know, "OPRahcare", "OPRah'ed", etc. Too bad we can't use that………..
But that is using it as an adjective, not a verb.
The Cheneys are awesome! Love to watch them (Dick, Lynne and Liz) shred the CNN anchors with the FACTS! They don't even flinch!
Meanwhile, Wolf Blitzer always has a glazed "What just happened?" look on his face whenever he interviews them.

I got to listen to a speech by him once…
I hope he never stops talking…statists start to quiver in fear when he clears his throat…
He had that same look during "Celebrity Jeopardy", too…
Clinton's fairy tale line spoke greater truths between the lines. POTUS was Hillary's gig period. And how dare Obama wreck that.
And how about Obama bringing Bubba back away from his shady financial dealings to hit the DC Spin Circuit for this POTUS under the contention that they "are winning?" Oh yeah. Right. And the Rooney's are getting into the bidding war for Terrell Owens because the Steelers are lacking leadership in their locker room.
And Chewbacca is a Wookiee….
Yesssss! You know the look I am talking about! LOOOOL I LOVE THE CHENEYS!!!!
Mr. Berg forgot the new noun "santorum".
I say Crist in Florida should be Scozzafava'd for Marco Rubio. Unfortunately its looking like big money will win the day over conservative principles. Watch out folks, Crist talks a good game, but does something else after election.
To quote Calvin and Hobbes: "Verbing weirds language.
Off topic, but that is an awesome picture of Cheney. Just the right amount-o-smirk.
'Above my pay grade', of course.
His wit is rapier sharp as well. He must have been a Marine at one time.
Dick Cheney is the very best when it comes to political fencing with the liberals. He cuts all of them to the quick with a very few well chosen words. Most liberals bleed easy so I am happy to have a rapier like Cheney to answer their lunacy. Not to mention that Dick is 100% on target with his assessments of Obama and the libtard crazies in office all the time.
Cheney needs to be Chief Political Advisor to all Conservatives who will be challanging the incumbents in 2010. If our man Cheney says they are NOT CONSERVATIVE enough then that's it…they are OUT ! NEXT !
Lynn needs to run for office…. She is superb !
While words can have some power, to me it is action that is the most important. I think America is tired of words and wants individuals who -do-. I certainly know I'm tired of politicians with words. It's all they seem to do. Talk incessantly while -doing- nothing.
Regarding "borked", that is actually used to mean something is broken. Or at least that's how I've encountered it on the net. For instance: "My computer is borked." I was under the impression it began as a typo of "broke" and caught on from there. (Just as several other less reputable net words got their start.) I've never encountered the meaning discussed in this article nor the political origins mentioned. It does seem to be used quite often online.
good one.
And he stole it from the military…

Cheney, Cheney, Cheney. I love Dick Cheney.
I always liked the time he told Sen. Leahy to go F himself.
I wouldn't count Rubio out yet…from what I've seen he has won every straw poll in the state. In addition, I've already seen many signs and bumper stickers for Rubio where I live and none for Crist.
Love Cheney! He knows how to "call out" Obama, as Obama said.
Bill Clinton called Obama a "Chicago Thug". Then Clinton charged $3 million dollars of stimulus funds from Obama for The Clinton Presidential Massage Parlor, in return for calling patriot American citizens "teabaggers". Of course, Clinton is the best person to use this term and cigars.
Did anyone else consciously grasp the use of double-entendre and rhyme in Clinton's words "fairy" and "tale?" Unconsciously probably everyone did, especially academic and media types, given their characteristic predilection.
Engineers have another appropriate definition of dithering: moving around randomly to obscure a signal.
Dithering is used to reduce interference to your TV from your computer. It is used in your computer to make jagged lines look straight.
In other words, it is used to hide the truth.
Absolutely Joan
I'm a Canadian fan of anti lib politics, Cheney is just one Super Elegant Statesman , How about Presidential, what a voice, what composure, direct, charming, brave, patriotic, just think of all the positive words you can ascribe to him, that's what makes him Sexy ,yes Damm Sexy, a real MAN
Someone from another post referred me to a site called http://www.Dearpolitician.org to write my politicians. The site is really cool in the fact that it automates everything and you can write your President, Vice President, Senators, and Congressman. The really interesting parts are that you can write complete Senate and Congressional committees. After you write what you want to say in the body of the template, you can print them off and mail them yourself or you can have Dearpolitician.org fax them to their offices instantly for FREE. If you want your letters delivered today, go to that site! Just passing along a cool site!
You not going to believe this but I have wasted all day researching for some info about this. Thanks for this, it was a wonderful read and really helped me out. Thanks again, <a href="http://ezinearticles.com/?Funny-Christmas-Songs-For-Children—Groove-King-Senseless
